I'd say it's more challenging in both DS1 and DS2. The devs seem to like to up the ante in the DLCs. The DLC in DS1 was quite well done, but it was not released in chapters I don't think, I just got it with the Prepare to Die PC version.

On DS2 only the first of 3 chapters is out so it's kind of short like 3-4 hours if you rush and know whats coming. My blind run was more like 10+ hours with lots of exploration and death. I got the season pass for ~30 percent off during summer sale though so looking forward to the other chapters.

One small critique on the DS2 DLC is the terrain is really well done. Some of the normal mobs do pretty interesting things (Ghost guys). But with the exception of the final boss who was awesome some of the other bosses were kind of lazy design. (Nashandra 2.0 with summons)

Almost like they really took their time on some parts and then ran out of time and were like crap are those other two bosses done yet? Umm no. Then use existing resources!

What's been killing you, specifically?

4 Kings made easy:

1 Fire/Chaos Claymore held 2H
1 set high def high Poise armor StoneGiant/Havels (So you can swing through their attacks and keep the fast pace burn going)
Chloranthy ring
Grass Shield on back for more stam regen

Put on the arty ring hop down and spin your camera until you see the first king.
Sprint to him possibly rolling once if he hits his magic attack cone at you.
Once inside swing for the fences. You can roll through the melee attack but I usually dont bother. Just estus chug while your stam comes back and spam your claymore again. The key is to burn the first king asap.

Look around if you had a chaos claymore +10 with 10 humanity on you you probably nuked him so fast you might have to wait for the second king. Once the second king spawns do the same thing you did to the first king.

Fire/Chaos claymore wrekts them so hard that same technique lasts well into NG+++

:)

A major portion of their damage, even their weapon damage, is Magic. High def is less important than magic defense. That said, if Onebro means what I think it means(someone who goes through at soul level one), then equip load and stats might make the tanking damage part of that strategy a bit more difficult, though wielding a claymore shouldn't be a problem. Edit: Scratch that, you don't have the dex.

Edit2: With Havel's ring, you could still mostly have the same setup while being at ~75% equip burden, but with 573 HP, you aren't soaking crap.

What's been killing you, specifically?

Half the time I seem to get the long-range, slow-moving magic spell thrown at me before I even get to the first king, which means I either need to take the hit with my shield (which still does a hefty amount and about 50% of the time so far has involved a follow-up melee hit that kills me as my poise is broken) or go out of my way to dodge it (which so far has meant that the second king has spawned before I down the first).

And yes, onebro means soul level 1 Smiley: grin By far the most fun way I've played the game so far, but as said, a half-dozen deaths on this fight caused me to step back a few weeks ago and I haven't gone back. As level 1, gear choices (especially weapons) are very restricted. My best are:

Fire Reinforced Club +8 (my go-to for this fight so far, as the Kings are very weak to fire)
Lightning Reinforced Club +4 (my go-to for most enemies, as the damage is higher than the fire club)
Lightning Light Crossbow +4 w/ lightning bolts (good ranged damage)
Max Pyromancy Glove (two spell slots: Greater Combustion and Combustion)

For my gear, I usually use
Gargoyle Helm +5 (Poise)
Crimson Robe +5 (best cloth armor)
Tattered Cloth Manchette +10 (best defense-for-weight ratio)
Crimson Waistcloth +5 (best cloth armor)

But in this fight, I'm using all Havel's except for the head, which is Crown of Dusk. Only one ring, and it is Havel's so I can still run. Reasoning being poise for any melee hits + damage with Pyromancy. Which, yes, increases the magic damage I take - but I was under the impression that you shouldn't get hit by magic often in this fight.

Strategy is supposed to be:
Run toward first king, dodge melee swipes. Two greater combustions and a melee hit should kill it, but so will 1 + 2 small ones + a melee hit. Best so far has been downing one king and dying on the second when the third spawned.

I usually go in with 10 Humanity, though how much the extra defenses help isn't really clear. I think it's just a matter of trying until the stars align and I don't get knocked out in the first round. If I can kill the first king without eating through all my best spells, I should be in a decent position.

But in this fight...Crown of Dusk.

Crown of Dusk wrote:
Boosts spell damage by 20%, but takes 30% additional damage from magic attacks
If you're focusing on magic, you might consider a Crown.of the Dark Sun for Four Kings. Lesser damage boost, but without the incoming damage increase.

Edit: After actually reading the whole post, I realized I missed the part where you acknowledge the increased damage taken: All the damage in the fight is magic. Increased magic damage taken hurts like hell here. Poise is still helpful, though.

Ok this character is getting pretty ridiculous. Quality + pyro. Still have not taken her to NG+ just farming Jeigh until all my dreams come true. Smiley: wink

So, Pyromancy scales with INT + FAI instead of solely with the glove like in DaS?

Hrm.. I was kind of thinking of making a Flame Knight kind of build, but I guess I could just make a mix of Pyro/Miracles since they'd both scale with Faith and can keep kind of a Paladin build.

Pyromancy scales with your Fire damage modifier. Since that scales with Int+Fath(I think increasing the lower of the two increases it more, so you want balance rather than focus on one), it more or less does.

Apparently I forgot how to play... maybe I'll just start over again.
#164 Aug 11 2014 at 9:23 AM Rating: Good
I might be hitting the wall again. I have 193 hours in, I was taking that toon above through NG+ and realized I was just mechanically doing it without the joy.

I also finished my 4th or maybe 5th play through of Fallout New Vegas this weekend. (256 hours total hehe). I need something new and exciting.

Or maybe it's time for me to roll a boxer in DS2 for fisticuffs. I could be reaching on that one though I only got about halfway through the game in DS1 on my boxer before the novelty wore off. Smiley: frown

"Started over" on one of my several level 13 knights. I have a couple of those and a couple clerics. Ran through a bunch of stuff, killed the Pursuer, got my Faith to 22, grabbed Lightning Spear, and am going through as a sword and board character with a Heide Knight Sword and a Fire Longsword. I'm having a blast again, and am hoping that when I get to whatever level my other character is, I'll remember where the heck I'm supposed to be going. Smiley: lol

The beginning of this game is so much freakin' fun, though.

Nice. It's fun all the way through imho. But if you do get stuck and want some idea's on progression path you can always consult Fextralife.

http://darksouls2.wiki.fextralife.com/Locations

I do not follow it to the letter. Belltower and Gargoyles can be pretty freakin rough if you do it when they say. I prefer to offline the tower and do the gargoyles much later for example.

I also beat Sinner with no gargoyles the first time so it's definitely optional. Also you will most likely have enough souls (1m is easy) to skip Sinner if you want to.

So now I have three characters all around the same level (98-104), all in about the same spot. I think my favorite right now is my Lightning/Fire character. I have a Fire Black Knight Ultra Greatsword and a Lightning Pursuer's Ultra Greatsword, and throw Fireballs and Lightning Spears all over the place. I just made it through Grave of Saints, and now have to go kill the Rotten.

Sounds like a fun build.

I rolled a fistpuncher and took him all the way to the first boss. Then decided to play my uber NG+ SL 234, SM 10m+ toon from above instead for a while last night. Finished Earthen Peak, Iron Keep, The Gutter, Black Gulch, Shaded Woods, and Doors of Pharros in a couple hours.

Was in the zone.

Mostly I just want to open this NG+ run all the way up so I am ready for the next DLC on Aug 26th.

I've been watching a lot of MANvsGAME recently, and watching him throw himself against a boss for hours on end makes it easier to persevere in my own game.

Just went and checked it out for a minute. NG+++ in Champions Covenant. Yeah Smiley: eek

I still feel pro about how fast I aced everything I came against last night in NG+. Went through Iron Keep without dying or bonfireing once except to light the second one. I murderlated Smelter Demon with melee and just Lucatiel before Lucatiel was half dead with my DLC Drakeblood GS +5. I almost felt bad for Iron King, just melee on him too and felt like he had no chance to touch me.

Jammed through the gutter without lighting a torch or touching anything. I know the way in the dark now to get to the bonfire without bothering with anything else. It's basically just brige to bridge to bridge, drop down light bonfire proceed to gulch. I hate that zone so I speed run it.

Then I gleefully lit every puddle on fire with fire arrows and watched the hand monsters burn alive in the Gulch.

I think playing my destitute fistpuncher guy from scratch made me appreciate how great my characters that are all decked out can play in comparison. Plus I stocked up with tons of resins and 999 Fire, Poison, Destructive arrows before NG+ which makes life nicer.

Took a week off and now I am totally hooked again heh.

Yeah, and he's running a hex/greatsword build. He likes to kind of roleplay a bit, so he won't do things that go against the character's nature, like use a shield or take armor off for mobility. He fought the Ancient Dragon for 14 hours. Smiley: lol His character is a "fallen paladin". Apparently, for NG+4 he's going to redeem himself, and be a melee character without any magic, possibly gaining favor with the light again for NG+5.
#172 Aug 15 2014 at 3:13 PM Rating: Good
I try to do that as well with the rollplay but usually don't stick to it. I have a concept generally but it tends to morph throughout the game.

This one started a dex bro swordsman and archer, no magic allowed, just poison. I was not going to use a shield just powerstanced katana's. I did it for a while but I really missed having a shield sometimes. Ended up sitting the toon aside for a while but then they buffed Dex and spears so she morphed into my shield and spear toon. That was great fun for a while.

Then I decided I wanted to try some great bows along with my hunter black bow. So I leveled strength. Also there is a poison spell in Pyro so I grabbed that. Pretty soon I had a quality toon with lots of strength and dex so I switched to a composite bow.

Well my pyro glove was +10 at that point might as well grab other pyro spells and some attunement. Also I missed my Claymore and its more quality so I made a +10 one.

Now in NG+ I am starting to use hexes again becuase /shrug why not. No real rollplay/concept reason I just like them.

I did manage to stick to my all Lightning guy theme but he is pretty much the only one that did not become something else by NG+

I do like his idea of changing what his character becomes on playthourghs specifically though. I may have to try that as I approach "Can do anything you want all the time" soul levels.

Well, I cleared the Looking Glass Knight. I kind of want the shield, but it's not 100% block. I got the Faraam Armor set, so now I'm using that. I'm not much of a fan of this shrine area... Slogging through water isn't very fun. I did get Sunlight Blade, though, so I suppose that's cool.
#174 Aug 17 2014 at 3:55 PM Rating: Good
The key to Shrine of Amana is a good bow.

In other news I cleared NG+ so I am all ready for the new DLC. Nashandra on NG+ was actually mildly challenging. The damage if you ***** up caught me off guard at first.

I've never done Pilgrims of the Dark so I might have a go at that next and also trying the 1'st DLC on NG+. I bet it's gonna hurt. It was pretty brutal even on NG lol.

Yeah, I was trying to not use bows, but aiming Lightning Spear with binoculars seemed just as cheap. Smiley: frown

Ended up making a Lightning Long Bow to take care of them. In the Undead Crypt right now, but I keep getting **** invaded. Also, I got Sunlight Blade, but it's annoying because now I have to switch my chime to my left hand, and I preferred to be able to use it in my right, with a shield still equipped. I can just switch over before a boss fight, but that's annoying. Smiley: lol

I'm terrible at PvP. Smiley: crymore I tried joining the covenant of the blue victims, but I don't think anyone is in the blue helpers covenant at this level.

Yeah I feel your pain on PvP. I lost to every red that invaded me yesterday. On one of them I was really close to winning and got lag stabbed in the back from 15 feet away. It just kind of sucked me in rubber band style.

I sometimes win duels on the bridge but invaders seem to get me a lot. I don't mind when it's a good fight but half of them seem to have invincible powers of some sort. Speaking of which don't pick up anything they drop. There is a hack out there that can corrupt your saves if you pick up the corrupted object.

I did not get invaded often in NG but at my 11m SM in NG+ I get invaded pretty frequently. I even started playing offline some when I don't want the hassle.
