Blacksmithing

Blacksmiths have the ability to forge their own armor and weapons both for personal use and for sale to others.

What are the best strategies for developing and using the blacksmithing skill? What items are the most and least useful ones to forge? Which classes are best suited to take up this trade? Can you make a profit off of blacksmithing, and if so how? Which cities are the best places to practice your trade?

Post your strategies on how to best use and develop the blacksmithing skill, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

Ok, Where can I buy Oak Shafts, and do they go by another name? also, Please donot say "in Kelethin" cause i've gone all over that mockery of existance, and i would much prefer an exact name and location..:) Thanks

Ok I know you told me not to tell you that it is possible to buy oak shafts in Kelethin, well you are right. You need to go to Felwithe. The vendor's name is Opal Leganyn and his location is inside Emerald Armour, in North Felewithe. Hope this can help you.

To make the dyes you need the assistance of either a shaman or rogue. Shaman with a skill of 85 (i think) in alchemy, or a rogue (dont know skill level) in poision making. They can make the dyes for you. It would help if you collected the materials required so all they had to do would be to hit the combine button. The materials varies as to what colors you desire, none the less they are all a PIA to get. Good luck to you.

Well my friend, I can offer you some advice but it is not alot. First I am not from any where near where Barbarians are so I can not tell you where to shop at. How ever, make metal bit(1 piece of small ore plus 1 piece of small ore plus one water flask). Do this until it trivialises(not sure what level) then all I can say is sharpen rusty weapons, the bad thing here is that the easiest sharpening stones for you to get in Antonica is in HighHold Pass( Or so I have heard). Once you get it up to a fair amout(let's say around 40ish make lanterns until 68 then onto skewers until 115, then pots up to 122 and then onto pot up to 168. I hope this can help you. I would also like to add at this point that smithing does not get capped like other skills(say 1hs according to your level) You can raise it higher then what your current cap is, as to how high I am not sure but best of luck to you and good smithing.

Pots don't trivial at 168, they trivial at 135, so you'll need to do banded.

Also, I would do skewers right after metal bits. It'll be tough at first, but think of all the time you save not having to runa around looking for rusty weapons.

Just curious. As a DE cleric, will I be able to imbeu (cant seem to spell it) materials to make cultural armor? I was told clerics do it, and I have been told it is an enchanter ability/ spell... does anyone know?

Thanks
RE: Anon
# Sep 27 2001 at 4:29 AM Rating: Good
To Imbue, you will need a Cleric (Lvl 29+) to cast a spell on the appropriate gem for your race (Saphire for Darkelves). To enchant you will need an enchanter (lvl 49+ I believe) to enchant the adamantite.

Some races can make "Enchanted Imbued Armor", and guess what...then you'll need both ;P
Ore
# Sep 16 2001 at 9:22 PM Rating: Decent
I have noticed that many of the easier things to make that i cn find require ore or metal bits, which requires ore. So my question is: Where is the closest source of ore from Kelethin, and how much do small bricks cost?
RE: Ore
# Sep 24 2001 at 3:50 PM Rating: Default
you can buy small bricks of ore in the mine in kaladim. they cost 6 to 7 gold each.
RE: Ore
# Sep 17 2001 at 12:10 PM Rating: Excellent
I don't know if it is the closest or not, but you can buy Ore in FreePort.
A small brick of ore will cost 6sp. or 1.2pp per stack
Medium Quality ore

I've been tryin to find where i can get medium quality ore, I've been told it drops off goblins, but is there any way to make or vendors perhaps.

Medium Quality Ore can be bought from Ukla in Rathe Mountains (ogre/troll camp at 1730,1300), Graham Embersmith in HighHold Keep (near bank) and Godbin Strumharp in Steamfont Mountains (windmill near 51,-611).

High Quality Ore on the other hand drops off various goblins around Norrath - in SolA, HHK, Permafrost, Runnyeye - and cannot be bought from vendors.

I would do banded gauntlets to 168, banded cloaks to 175, fine steel collars to 182, fine steel visors to 195 and then fine steel bracers to 205.

I might add, that if you only want to make the cultural armor for yourself, you would perhaps be better off just buying it (if any ogre smiths on your server are cultural-able that is). Easier and most likely cheaper - at least if you gather the components yourself.

Twinky Smith
# Sep 13 2001 at 12:28 PM Rating: Good
Do to the cost of smithing, I made a twink to learn smithing. I decided I would supply him with all the ore needed to rase his skill to 115. I also got the basic smithing book for my smith. As a general rule the less something cost to make the lower the skill needed to make said item.
This being the case, and since they are needed in most low skill items I started out making metal bits. Once I was no longer gaining skill I made toolboxes and arrow heads. I was able to sell some of the toolboxes for a nice profit to other players. For the most part I rased my skill to lvl 41 on arrowheads. I had better sucess rate with these than toolboxes, also you can make many more before having to go sell. To skill lvl 51 made toolboxes. Now I'm making skewers.
My twink has been able to buy everything needed except for the ore. At present my smith is lvl 6.

I hunted in the new zone from lvl 23 to 24 with my shaman. I made over 100pp and obtained a conbantion of split bamboo and wiker set of armor, as well as some low lvl weapons for my twink. The shaman comes in handy for running up to HH to buy ore and such.

I have enjoyed the smithing skill but I wonder why it cost so much to make the weapons. They range from bronze to FS like stats. I think if they made the weapons cheeper to make 1pp to 3pp or so, it would be a great help to the newbie smiths as we as to the nonsmiths. I see lots of people running around at my lvl and higher still using rusty weapons.
The best time to sell any product is when you are in a zone in which most of the people there want the item you are selling. This bing the case I need to sell most of my banded in pre lvl 20 zones. However it would be hard to buy the ore needed to become a master smith before you are too old to leave most of the lower zones where poeple are buying banded.
What things do I use?

RE: files

files are made by metal bits, molds and water. if you are using these and still cant create them, make sure you are not at a racial forge ie in halas there is a barbarian forge right infront of the weapon shop, its name slips my mind at this time, if you go around back you can use the generic forge. also somehing to look out for is make sure your at a forge. ive tried to smith on several occasions at ovens and kilns..lol. hope i helped..

Greetings I am a Druid of the 15'th season and I am lloking into becoming a smith. I feel this is the best trade skill I can chose because at lvl 29 us Druids get two spells used in smithing. Imbue Plains Pebble(Worshipers of Karana) and Imbue Emerald(Worshipers of Tunare),these imbued items can then be used for smithing armour. Can some one please tell me more about using this ability I would appreciate it. Also is there ANY way to enchant metals used in smithing, perhaps even going so far as using the jewelry metals for smithing armours. Well hope I can get some info back.

Well, a couple things. As a Wood Elf you worship Tunare, so you won't be able to use the Plains Pebble Spell, that is Karana Only. Also you can do cultural smithing w/ the imbued emeralds (you can use imbued pebbles too, you just won't be able to imbue them) however Wood Elf Cultural Smithing is use to create weapons and the Mithril Weapons you can make are rather nice.

Greetings friend.

Shaklor Soulraizer, Master Blacksmith at your service. The spells of which you speak bring a blessing upon the stones in which it is cast. These stones are then used to bring said blessing to imbue magical armor. For smithing you must be able to use a cultural forge and thus for elves, you must be high elven.

It may be in your best interest, although this is a very arduous task, to take up tailoring. This is a skill that you can benefit truly from as your wood elven culturual is in fact tailoring.

Do not be discouraged by this news however, as norrath is always in need of fine smiths.

You may have gotten good marks in Smithing in College, but apparently you fell asleep in your Diversity credit classes. Wood elves have cultural smithing, and they also use Imbued Emeralds and Plains Pebbles. Wood Elves can make some very nice wis/agi weapons w/ dex or cha depending on deity used to Imbue

To see some of the weapons search this site for Mithril Fier'dal

What is the easiest and cheapest way for you to get good at smithing?
RE: Smithing
# Sep 15 2001 at 11:41 AM Rating: Default
i found there to be no such thing. smithing is expensive, in both money and materials, but if you must..locate an ore supply the small chunks will due for now. make metal bits till you cant increase the skill no more...then make about 50% more..make 2 or 3 files, you'll need only one but files are the next easiest item (imho), feild point arrow heads should be next, then studs for studded leather, if you aren't multitasking (like i am) you should be able to sell these to a tailor pc ( or use them yourself if your a multitasker)..the guides on this website are real good, i'd consult them before running off with what i said.

I am not aware of one...however, you pretty much have to have a skill over 100 to forge anything that is of real EQ value in smithing (like banded mail). After your skill reaches 101 (master) your skill value is displayed in your character's skill section. It will look like this:

Smithing

Hope this helps.

I recommend going out and killing creatures with rusty weapons. If you are a late blooming smith (not a newbie) just go buy rusty weapons. Then with sharpening stones (5cp/ea) put one in the forge with a rusty weapon and combine. The result will be a tarnished weapon.

This will raise your skill to about 27. Doing 2Handed Swords will raise it up to 31.

Afterwards, start making metal bits (two small pieces of ore, stackable) and a flask of water in the forge. Use these metal bits with a scaler mold and yet another flask of water to make fish scalers. Scalers trivialize at 41.

Good luck

Fish Scalers...

Metal bits + scaler mold + flask of water

Trivial at 41

PS: Metal bits are made with two small pieces of ore (stackable) and a flask of water. They will be your friend for a long time. I recommend many of the smithing guides on this site.

PPS: Although small pieces of ore are stackable, do not stack them in the forge.

RE: MILKMAN420

Don't know about the first two but for the coif you have to take three scales off of Scaled wolves in FoB and 5gp and give them to Trooper Shester, near the zone to FoB in Cab. When you give him that, you then take the "Unfinished coif" and three more scales and combine them in a forge and voila, 4ac .8wt with a cool look for iksars :)
