Blacksmithing

Blacksmiths have the ability to forge their own armor and weapons both for personal use and for sale to others.

What are the best strategies for developing and using the blacksmithing skill? What items are the most and least useful ones to forge? Which classes are best suited to take up this trade? Can you make a profit off of blacksmithing, and if so how? Which cities are the best places to practice your trade?

Post your strategies on how to best use and develop the blacksmithing skill, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

Down and Dirty Smithing ~ by Cormath Loremaster

Of the trade skills, Smithing and Jewelcraft are worked in much smaller stages due to cost. When working Baking the cost of a Fish and Batwing are easily ignored, but by Banded Gorgets you will want to start selling what you make to comfort the finial cost of learning the skill. I sell to merchants since the time lost auctioning is time I could finish learning a trade and get back to hunting for better coin.

The items are scattered about on merchants and a few ooc/shouts in town can get you in the right direction. Once you have the items to combine and lots of water, combine them on a forge.

** All items also require one water flask **

imbued fp armor... HOW?!
# Nov 02 2001 at 8:04 PM Rating: Default
if anyone could tell me ingredients for making any imbued fine plate armor please send me email:
LaminiBraveKnight@yahoo.com

or here

I have 183skill in smithing
I sell FP armor all the time, i dont spend pp on skilling up, i sell, and skill up as I sell.
I know you have a cleric imbue using a "Diamond".
Now do you imbue the ore? the metal? or the BP itself after its all made already? Thanks
Please say that since I already have a set of fine plate armor, that I can imbue it NOW, after its all already been made.

for imbued armor, you must imbued the gems.
you must give it to a cleric for that.

RE: Where in Thurg?

In Thurgadin, you have to make your own sheet metal. Buy two small bricks of Ore from Nimren Stonecutter and combine with a flask of water to make a sheet. Trivials about 56, so if you are USING Sheet Metal, you should have no problem making these.

-It makes things a tad more complicated, but just a tad...
Creating Enchanted armor
# Nov 01 2001 at 6:41 PM Rating: Decent
Question here is how can we create enchanted armor? I see something telling me I need a cleric of my deitie to do this? Somone can help?
RE: Creating Enchanted armor
# Nov 02 2001 at 10:16 AM Rating: Good
You are really touching upon TWO things here:

1) IMBUED Armor/weapons
2) ENCHANTED Armor/weapons

Items that are enchanted are made from a racial metal, like Brellum for Dwarves, Mithril for Elves and Adamantite for Dark Elves. The items are basically made in much the same way as anything else, but the metal must be enchanted using the appropriate spell (Enchant Brellium, Enchant Mithrill etc), which is only available to Enchanters at lvl 49+. Enchanted items can only be used by the races that normally can wear that particular metal.

Items that are Imbued are also made much as you normally would, but have been imbued with the essence of a Deity. This is done by having a Shaman or Cleric of lvl 29+ cast the appropriate spell on the appropriate gemstone. Each Deity has a related gem (Amber for Cazic-Thule, Perridots for Bristlebane, Pearls for Prexus etc.), and you need to have a cleric/shaman who worships that deity cast on the right stone. The stone is then "added to the mix".

Then there are the Enchanted Imbued items, and if you're really clever, you can probably figure out how these are made by yourself ;P

Dying armour and magic armour
# Oct 31 2001 at 8:20 PM Rating: Decent
I have three questions.

1. How do you dye armour?

2. Are there a certain number of colors you can use, and if so which ones?

3. I have found armour that is MAGIC but doesn't increase stats or anything, what is so special about it then? Everyone was making a big hype about it.

I would also like to say that if you want to be able to smith some of the armours, you might need to take up tailoring bcause some armours require home made leaterh pads to make.
RE: Dying armour and magic armour
# Nov 01 2001 at 10:26 AM Rating: Good
1. You do this: http://www.eqtraders.com/secrets/recipes_dyes.htm

2. These are the available colors: http://www.eqtraders.com/fashion/fsdyes_dwarven.html

3. Some things are magical without having stat-bonusses on them. Some have an effect, many are lightsources, for instance. It really doesn't make any kind of difference that a piece of armor is magical, except that some might have very very high ac and/or weigh less than you would expect.

The only real difference is when fighting pure magical creatures, like whisps and Ghouls. These can only be hit with an attack that is magical in nature which means:
a) A Kick (Including the rogue/monk skill "Instil Doubt") won't connect unless your boots are magical.
b) A Punch won't hit unless your gloves are magical.
c) A Bash won't work unless your Shield is magical. (Does anyone know how this applies to the large-race-skill "Slam"?)

True, Leather Padding is a must. Trivial at 41, I believe, so it shouldn't be too hard. Any serious smith will probably find that he buys 95% of his leather padding, however, since you need sooooo many to skill up.

How do i raise my blacksmithing skills between Level 120 - 180 (Banded and Fine Plate)
RE: Blacksmithing
# Nov 01 2001 at 10:15 AM Rating: Good
Banded doesn't triv at 120, so you just keep going. Before starting, however, I would suggest getting your skill as far as you can making "Crap". From 120 make pots for a few more points (1 Metal Bit, 1 flask of Water, Pot mold and Standing Legs mold) Triv at 122. Then do Sewing Kits (1 Metal Bit, 1 Flask of Water, Needle Mold and Thimble Mold) Trivial at 135 (Note: The Needle and Thimble Molds are usually found on vendors who sell TAILORING supplies, not the ones you normally go to for smithing molds).

THEN onto banded armor. Make Gauntlets up to 168, and then finish off with Cloaks, which will take yo to 175. Then you can either do your cultural (If indeed your cultural is smithed and goes high enough) OR you can do Fine Steel Plate, the last of which (The cloak again) trivials at a whopping 242.

Have fun, and be ready to buy a new mouse when you're done.

Does anyone know if it is actually possible to make Steel shafts, for bowyering? Steel and Ceramic are both listed as possible materials for making bows with in the in-game Bowyers Guide, so I was wondering if they CAN be made or whether the recipie for them is broken. Obviously if anyone knows the recipie i would appreciate you telling me. :). I cannot smith myself but may well need the information so i can pass it on to a smith on my own server. Should anyone with a high pottery skill glance at this any information on a ceramic bow shaft would also be nice :).

YES IT IS TRUE, I REACHED 175!!!!

now the bad news, Im broke!

i plan on selling smithed FS to PC's in East commonlands because anytime i go there, people want them, but according to my calculations, its going to cost me roughly.. i dont know
1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000pp to get to lvl 242, im sry but i meet a few people who say they have grandmaster smithing at 250, and HOW did they do it? no one has that type of money!

is there something wrong with the info that im getting?
RE: AT LAST 175!
# Nov 21 2001 at 3:28 PM Rating: Decent
Congratulations... Welcome to Hell. :-) Nothing wrong with your info. As you get high enough in levels, the amount of money it takes to make a few pieces of FP doesn't seem quite so expensive anymore. For folks like me, though, it will make you twinge.

Actually, it's not the cost that's going to get you. It's the painful process you need to go through to make it. Here's the short version of my experience:

MQ Ores: In High Keep
Forge: In High Pass
Molds: Qeynos

So, if you make your folded sheets in High Pass, you need to zone constantly, and run through a dangerous zone. THe ore is VERY heavy, so you can't make much between zonings. I didn't want to do that.

1: I bought as much ore as I could store at the bank.

2: Gated to North Karana

3: Ran to the bank in Qeynos

4: Ran back and forth from bank to Firepride's forge, making folded MQ sheets.

5: Took the sheets to Tin Soldier, bought molds

6: Went to forge outside Tin Soldier, and made Neck pieces.

I wound up with 3 neck guards and 1 skillup to 176. And it took forever with all the running.

I've got a feeling that making Fine Plate for the masses is NOT going to be our main source of income. :-)

MQ Metal Sheets?

Question about smithing.
# Oct 16 2001 at 7:41 PM Rating: Decent
I have some questions about smithing:

Can you smith velium weapons?

Can you smith velium armor?

Can you smith Blackened alloy weapons and armor?

Can you smith fine steel great staffs?

And what is the best 1hb/1hs that you can make and what skill do you need to make it?

Hope You can answer these. Another thing I would like to say is a helpful hint. If you have high standings with dwarves (or low ones) and want a forging hammer but dont want to waste money to get one, go to crushbone and kill the dwarven smiths, they carry forging hammers on them. Hope this helps.
RE: Question about smithing.
# Oct 17 2001 at 11:46 AM Rating: Good
1) Yes, there are several recipes for Forged Velium weapons. They are fairly ok, and most have the "Velium Shards" proc.

2) Yes and no. There is no true smithed Velium armor, but Velium is a component of some High end tailored items.

3) Nope. Blackened Alloy are only dropped by MoBs.

4) No, the only Fine Steel items that are smithed are the Fine Steel Plates...I know it makes no sense that you can do one but not the other...It might change some day (Shadows of Luclin?)

5) "The Best" is dificult to define. Here are the stats for most Smithed weapons: http://www.eqtraders.com/secrets/recipes_smithing_weapon_stats.htm As you can see, they range from "Crap" to "Very nice indeed".
