Languages

Almost every race in Norrath has its own unique language, and with a little practice you can learn them all.

What is the best way to develop your different language skills? Which languages are the most and least useful to learn? Who should be developing their language skills, and why?

Post your strategies on how to best use the language skills, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

Quests and languages

Is there anywhere in the game where the languages are used to hide quests, and story lines?
Other than certain notes and books, but actual NPC's speaking anything other than common?
How do the languages servive, if your a human and you visit Talas all the Barbarians are speaking common, what of thier own tongue?

I have found a few notes in kunark on sarnak bodies, which were written in a language which I presume to be sarnak. I didn't understand anything it said. The note was no drop no rent, so its gone now. I also don't know who I could learn sarnak from (maybe it was iksar). But apparently there is some usage of languages in game.

To the best of my knowledge there are no NPCs that speak a different tongue. It's a shame Verant hasn't done more with this.

although, if verant did implement this, you might be able to just keep hitting the 'H' key to hail the NPC and learn the language that way.

I personally learned gnollish in blackburrow. I noticed it one day when I went to train and I had that language available in my "known" skills. I also had once or twice where I HEARD gnolls speaking in blackburrow. Not text typed on the screen, but actually heard them speaking. I am currently in Lake of Ill Omen and there are times when it ALMOST sounds as if I can understand the sanaks. I'm hoping that I will be around them long enough to learn their language.

To all linguist

I have been learning all the languages as a Bard because I thougth from a roleplaying stand point, Bard's should be fluent in all languages. Ok, maybe its silly, but I also enjoy the challenge of trying to learn them all. My question is this. Where can someone learn Kerran? I have never even heard of this language, and most of the people that respond to my request to learn languages tell me they have never heard of it either and doubt it exists. If anyone can help me, please email me at wmiller7@mindspring.com or post an answer for others to see also. By the way, I am excellent in all languages except Orcish and Kerran. For some reason, Orcish is hard to find on Mith Marr at excellent. I am willing to teach the all the other languages to others. Again I am on the Mith Marr server. Just msg me sometime.

Cordially,

Kerran is not a in game language. There is no where to teach it.

From what I have been able to track down, the rumor started when Allakhazam's site (yes, this one...) listed it as a langauge. As per Verant, it is not an official language.

Hope that helps.

One easy way for a pair of people who are interested in learning ALL the languages is to:

#1) Have one of you get one point in all of the languages(you have to be fairly high to get the one point in elder dragon)

#2) Go to some isolate location by a zone boundary (I chose erudin)

#3) Form a group between the two of you(or more)

#4) Set up a social with /g 1 /g 2 /g 3 /g 4 /g 5. It doesnt make any difference how many characters are on each line, so only do 1 to reduce the spam.

#5 The person who got the skills goes through each language and spams. Once the reciever gets 2 skillups they Jump. This is the best way I have seen to let the first person know when to change languages.

#6 When the reciever has gained 2 points in each language you zone.

#7 Now the reciever does step 5.

#8 Keep going back and forth until you are about 6 points into excellent and you are done.

I can verify that this technique works well, I discovered the technique myself a few days ago.

Rumor has it that if you have sufficient skill in the right language, that you can sometimes hear mobs say things. Insults, info about an NPC, such as last seen and where, and so forth. I have not had the opportunity to verify this as of yet, though.

Elder Dragon will help a wizard read the rune recipe books. I'm sure other languages have other uses as well, but it's certainly not one of those MUST have skills. I enjoy learning them because it seems to me that a Wizard spends a great deal of time studying and knowledge of many languages would be important.

My High Elf Cleric has made it his personal quest in life to speak all the languages of this great land. Kerran is a new one to me, but at level 15, he speaks the rest of the languages at Excellent. I roleplay this character and have all the languages on there own hotkeys, so I can switch between them and talk to other PC in the own language.
To make a hotkey type: /language help - to bring up the language list.
Then make the hotkey: /language 1 (for Common) and so on. Just put the language number from the list on the hotkey. Example: /language #

I have fun with the languages and you would be supprised how many people think you don't know what they are saying about you or someone else, because they're using their "Racial" language.

Although not a "Trade Skill" I have made a reasonable sum oif coins teaching people. My best so far, 100pp for teaching a level 52 Necro, Halfling and Froglok. Not bad for half an hours work and he taught me Dragon in return.

Well that's my two cents worth.....

Yes those are all the langs including also including goblin. and except kerran you can learn and speak them all (not sure about kerran so I take his word). I have faerie not pixie so I'm assuming they are the same because well there more faeries than pixie NPCs anyway. and to the question does anyone speak all these I speak most of them although I'm still in search of some of the NPC languages. To learn them you have to gain lvls and eventually your NPC GM offers them although he won't offer them all so you must learn some from other players. If you fight certain mobs for a long time when you reach the lvl required of yer class to learn that language it may already have a great amount of skill in it. example I fought orcs forever and when I hit a certain lvl it was already excellent and I now speak it :). That's all

Is there a way to learn languages past your current level without grouping with other players or spending skill points? If I have a "10" in a language and sit there and talk to myself or others is there any chance that I can improve? Can language skills raise by just hiting a spam key over and over again? Or does someone actually have to "teach" it to you?
an answer.
# Aug 25 2000 at 10:09 PM Rating: Excellent
You can teach someone else to a skill one above your own. Then after you both zone the other person can teach you what he has learned, plus one point. (You must change zones after you learn a language to have the knowledge kick in)

Say I had a 75 skill in pixie. I could teach someone else enough to raise their skill to 76.

The Basics of Learning New Languages
# Aug 22 2000 at 6:29 PM Rating: Excellent
There are many languages Everquest. All races except humans have a language unique to their race, evil races have their "Darkspeech", rogues have "Theives Cant" and so on. In addition, all characters start with "Common" at Excellent, and most of the time you will see people using Common.

On a non-PvP server, the advantages of learing languages are limited, but it will still help in reading certain notes that you find, as well as with researching new magic spells. (I imagine that on the Team PvP server, the evil races use Darkspeech so "Good" characters can't understand them). There are four languages used for reading books about researching spells. They are Elder Elven, Elder Erudite, Elder Dragon, and I believe Combine (the language of the Giants). Obviously, Elves begin with Elder Elven, and Erudites with Elder Erudite.

As you advance in levels, you will notice that there are some other languages that appear when you are training at your class's guildhouse. These include Goblin, Gnoll, Elder Dragon, and many others. While there is no obvious reason to train in these, it is possible to learn these languages with a minimal investment of skill points. You can see if you can find someone you can pay to teach you the language, or you can learn them with a friend (even if only one of you has just one point in that language).

Heres how:
1) Group up with your friend, and have both of you turn off group chat in your options (this will prevent you from going Linkdead from all the spamming).

2) Set your language to the one you want to work up by right clicking the dialogue box when in the small view mode (the one where the dialogue box looks like a scroll).

3) Make a language hotkey using all six slots. start each with /g and then just one word after.
Sample:
/g Hi
/g how
/g are
/g you
/g doing
/g today?

4) Hit the hotkey repeatedly until he or she /tell's you that the language skill stopped increasing. You will see a message that goes something like "Your language skills have improved". If you are teaching the language from 0 or 1 point, it will only go up a few times before it stops.

5) When the language skill stops increasing, both of you should zone. Now you will be able to teach eachother again and your language skill will be able to raise a few more points. (This is because you are able to teach someone only a little more of the language than you know yourself. So if you had 1 point in the "Gnoll" language, you might be able to teach a friend Gnoll up to around 3 or 4. After zoning, your friend could teach you Gnoll up to 5 or 6.) Continue to do this until your skill rating reaches Excellent.

If one of you knows the language up to Excellent, then only the person learning the language will have to zone, and only once. By the time you've heard the "Your language skills have improved" message about 90 times, you will have an Excellent rating in that language when you zone.

Be warned that learning a language skill up from one point with a friend may take several hours. It takes only about 5 or 10 minutes if one person has the skill up to Excellent. Its best to teach and learn new languages near the zone edge of a zone that isn't frequently trained.

One good zone for this is the Temple of Solusek Ro. I know I learned quite a few languages in a short amount of time here. If you can get three people doing this in a group with 3 different languages---the time spent is reduced greatly.

Learning without going LD
# Aug 17 2000 at 6:59 PM Rating: Excellent
Setup a simple hot key - YOU ONLY NEED 1 WORD PER LINE! More words per line will only cause you greater lag and higher chance to go LD.

I think you can setup a 5 line phrase per hot key (only need one key). To advance in skill, it goes by number or lines, not amout of words. So, here is how my HotKey is setup:

Key button: Teach

/g You
/g are
/g learning
/g a new
/g language.

Just chose the language and repeat (watch that lag meter, you can make your self go LD quite quickly. Be sure all in the group have group chat OFF and tell them if their skill stops advancing to hit the "H" or whatever their Hail key is a bunch of times so you see it. As the teacher, your screen will be filled will spam.

Also, remember that you must logout and log back on (or zone) to see your advance in skill.

Good Luck! Have fun - BTW, has anyone ever heard of the language "Giant Speak"? I have them all, I thought, but I heard rumors about this one. Does it exist?

Whenever I'm in a language lesson I just turn off group chat in the chat filter. You still gain skill just like usual, and you don't get spammed, and won't go LD.
You won't miss anything important, because your groupmates can just use say to talk normally during the lesson.

You can teach and learn languages quickly at the same time.

1) Each person wanting to teach a language should have made a "Teach" hot key that has several lines of text to say in group. The more that you can fit in one hotkey command, the better.

2) Group with the folks that you want to teach (and learn from if you're exchanging knowledge).

3) Set your language to the one you wish to teach.

4) Important step! Everyone in the group turns on the filter for group chat so that you don't see it. We're about ready to do the mother of all spamming, and we don't want anyone to go link dead.

5) All teachers keep hitting the hotkey repeatedly to train. Everyone should fairly regularly see improvement messages until they've learned all they can.

If you want to teach a second language, just switch languages and continue.

6) When everyone's through, don't forget to disable the group chat filter so that you'll see future group messages.

In theory, a group of six could learn five new languages from the other group members in a very short period of time.
