Blacksmithing

Blacksmiths have the ability to forge their own armor and weapons both for personal use and for sale to others.

What are the best strategies for developing and using the blacksmithing skill? What items are the most and least useful ones to forge? Which classes are best suited to take up this trade? Can you make a profit off of blacksmithing, and if so how? Which cities are the best places to practice your trade?

Post your strategies on how to best use and develop the blacksmithing skill, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

Mithril Armor Parts ???

Has anyone managed to smith up any Mithril yet? I'm wondering what the heck Vial of Swirling Mists and Essence of Shadows are. Where or what do I get them from.

Essence of Shadows is apparently dropped by Shadowed Men. That means it'll be hard to come by, unless you're high enough level to collect for yourself. I'm not quite that high, but then, my skill isn't high enough for me to worry about trying to make Adamantite just yet. The Vial of Mists, should be the next step on the Enchanter's Clarify Mana series, but don't hold me to that, since I don't know for certain.

Vials of swirling mists drop off of air type elemtals.

Essence of shadows may not be required for moonlight temper. On other boards people are claiming that the recipe fails using it. This would make sense because essence of shadows is used in shadow temper and no other item appears in two differen recipes.
Sheets vs Folded Sheets
# Sep 20 2000 at 8:11 PM Rating: Default
Is there any difference? I see mq sheets for sale then i see everywhere else you need folded sheets to make the fine steel. Is this the same item?

Thanks
There is a BIG difference!
# Sep 20 2000 at 11:32 PM Rating: Excellent
I have tried the fine steel plate combination with normal MQ sheets yielding the improper quantity/combination message. You have to use MQ folded sheets for this. I have not seen MQ folded sheets for sale, only MQ ore. The MQ folded sheet is a MQ block of ore + water + hammer. You can make a MQ block of ore by combining three large bricks with water. I hope this helps a bit!
Seafarer Ringmail
# Sep 20 2000 at 5:43 PM Rating: Decent
While I was on the Sister island in OOT, I stopped by the merchants and noticed that one of them had a scroll telling of something called the Seafarer Ringmail. It is to be forged in the Freeport Cultural Forge.

Medium Quality Rings+Smithy Hammer+Sea Temper+ Patterned onto a piece of leather armor.

This would lead me to believe that this would be great armor for a druid; better than reinforced since it consists of leather armor as a base. If anyone has any more info, esp. how to make Sea Temper, please respond.
RE: Sea Temper
# Sep 23 2000 at 12:41 AM Rating: Default
The Temper requires Saltwater Seaweed, which can be FISHED (not foraged) in the OOT, and 2 mugs of Sea foam - no idea where to get those. The full recipe is in the brewing section.

Druids Cannot wear ringmail. A lot of the new smithing stuff requires leather of some sorts. Veran'ts way of making it more cross skill, and setting up the player economy.

The other recipies are under the skills link then to racial smithing recipes (or something simillar)
then use the scroll button on the bottom of the page to take you to the Tempers button.

Hey folks. I'm seeing lots of questions here that can be answered by heading to: https://everquest.allakhazam.com/ and either clicking on the Forging Chart Link he has on yesterday's update, or by scrolling down the left portion of his main page, and clicking on "Skills", from there click on the Racial Forging Chart Link near the top of the page.

Gorlim and I pout a LOT of time into this spreadsheet, and it has every bit of info you will need to make all the new stuff. It has recipes for every type of new armor, weapon, and shield. Recipes for making all the Tempers, Rings, and Sheets, even for the Racial Metals like Mithril and Adamantite. There's a Tab for Location referances, with the LOC of every vendor involved with each type of item, a list of acquired components that must be either bought or looted. A Created Components section with details on how to make everything you need to make. In essence, it has the answer to every question I've seen posted since the servers came up yesterday, in regards to the new Blacksmithing stuff. Check it out, I'm sure you'll be happy with what you find there.

There's even some instructions for making the Dyes for Fine Plate armor coloring.

Hope it answers your questions.

I also disagree. Many good things about the chart but there is also large amounts missing. Morning Dew is listed as dropped when its foraged in gfay in the morning only. Most of the temper parts in general are listed as dropped. Some i gather are actually dropped, or foraged, or bought, or even found on the ground at random

What elves EXACTLY drop Elf Blood? Could I say, wander over to Sister Isle, set my pet on 'evicirate', and gather stacks and stacks of Elf Blood? Or will this be a major undertaking that I'd need the might of an enitre guild to handle? Does Elf Blood Stack? Is it No Drop? How difficult is it to brew? Does Shadow Temper stack? Who put the 'bomp' in the 'bomp-shu-bomp'? How much is that doggie in the window? And...if there are no cows in Norrath, where's all that milk coming from?!

The Elfs Blood dropps very rarely, as a random drop, off of random Elf NPC's, it takes time to get, and won't be in the least bit common. Patience is your ally on that component. The pet idea may work very well for cutting down the amount of time it takes to get this and a other rare drops. My roommate is a 51st Mage. He's slaughtered Griffene, Onnes, and Innes, and gotten one blood thus far... don't look for all of this stuff to drop on every kill.

All bloods stack, and are tradeable. The database specifies that this stuff is tradeable in the Tempers and Dyes sections. Skill rates were not part of this project for a reason... we didn't have much time to work with, and so we decided to concentrate on where to get the parts, and how they combine rather than how high a level you have to be to do it. Most fine plate does not trivialize until 200+ skill. My main Smith is at 175, and none of it is trivial yet, that I've seen. I suggest you start with the single-sheet pieces, and move up from there.

The "Bomp" was put in by Sha na na near as I can tell.

The doggie is a pit bull, and is free to any familoy with no childeren, or neighbors.

The milk question is "udderly" impossible to answer (sorry, had to do it).

Cheers,

That's nice, but what I REALLY need is the trival levels on these pieces of armor; what skill is needed for fine steel plate and for the racial plates?

And what level alchemy skill is required for the dye?
RE: The answers you seek, all in one spot.
# Sep 21 2000 at 11:26 AM Rating: Default
Over on KC's boards someone made blue dye and said it was trivial at skill of 52. Also from what I can gather FS plate is not trivial at 175 which is why there are no trivials out yet. That said Med Quality Folded sheets are trivial by 127 (my skill level) but they are not 100%. I failed twice in 8 tries - could be just bad luck though.

The Recipe for Medium Quality Folded SHeets of Metal are available here at Alla's site. Click on the Forging Chart link, and head to the Tab at the bottom called Created Components. Your question will be answered there. This Spreadsheet is very complete, all the way down to the /loc of every vendor involved in every new Weapon, Shield and Armor Piece.

I think you'll find that it's quite helpful.

And to answer your qestion specificly, you use three Med Qual Bricks of Ore, and a Water to make a single Medium Quality Block of Ore. Then combine that Medium Quality Block of Ore with a water, and a Smithy Hammer to make the Med Qual Folded Sheet. It's all done in a regular Forge.

It's all on the Forging Chart. Check it out.

How to Save Your Shoe Leather with FS Plate Smithing

It's been said before, and I'll say it again--

Freeport, Freeport, Freeport.

You can get everything but the leather backing and the MQ ore here:

Smithy Hammer--Groflah's Forge, NFP (one-time-only purchase!).
Water Flasks--you really shouldn't need my help for this one.
"Ikthar's Metal Skin" (instructions, one-time only purchase), FS Plate Molds--Valentin Fireheart, Armor by Ikthar, EFP (she's upstairs).
Forges--all over Freeport, and the regular forges will suffice for Fine Steel Plate.

LQ pelts of the appropriate size can be either purchased from merchants in the Commonlands, or wrested from the backs of the appropriate MOB's.

Spiderling Silk--also readily available from merchants in EC and WC.

MQ ore, dye, resins--Available from Grahm Embersmith, a new merchant located next to the miner in the Highpass Keep basement. Per a post 9/21/00 on the official boards, Grahm's faction got set to "HighholdCitizens", making him dubious to paladins (i.e., won't sell). The faction is being adjusted to "MerchantsofHighpass", to make his reaction identical to the miner.

Buy your ore in the Pass, bank it, head back to FP, picking up enough pelts/spiderling silk on the way to make your leather backing (mine was trivial at 31 tailoring skill), collect the ore from the FP Bank, make your sheets, pick up the molds at Armor by Ikthar, and forge away!

This will, unless you can gate, be a rather time-consuming process. It takes me, unSOWed, approximately 20 minutes to make the run from the FP west gate to the bank in Highpass Keep. I suggest you buy enough extra ore to handle any failures.

The merchants sell the spiderling silks and pelts that players sell to them. Chances are that their supply will be depleted very soon and a new economy of spiderling silks and pelts will spring up. The point being that the merchants in W & E Commons will not have silks and pelts for long so it may not be worth including in the chart - except perhaps as a suggestion.

I would not consider yourselves screwed. Remember you are a wood elf, and you live in trees. From a logical and RP perspective it doesnt make sense for wood elves to be great smiths, although I wouldnt mind seeing Kelethin go up in flames as they tried to heat the forges hot enough to work in mithril. Remember this is an RPG, if you want to have a BFG 2000 go play Quake. Otherwise enjoy the world which has been created for us to explore.

Ya know there is no need to get rude friend, try getting something called a life before you attack others legitimate questions. Wood Elves make alot more sense than high elves for mithril as some of the armor ingredients are Forge only. High elves never get forage. Also how many Melee classes do High Elves get??? Answer is ONE! Wood Elves get 3, so do the math, if anyone would be seeking this great armor wouldn't it be the woodelves rather than High Elves? Heck there isn't a whole lot that they don't share, so why wouldn't both races share the abillity? So please get a real life before attacking me for asking a legitimate question.

In fantasy lore, Sylvan (wood) elves were never good smiths as I understand it. It was always high elves making the elven chain +2 heh. Anyway mithril PLATE mail is the key phrase. High Elves get 2 plate wearing classes which are popular. Wood elves have 1 plate wearing class which is a rather rare race/class combination. Expect wood elves to receive race only fletching and perhaps tailoring recipes.

And as far as the armor goes, as the current rumors that ive been getting have been saying: All high elf classes can wear the mithril chain. Thats right, even the wiggly fingers running around in mithril chain. So they have you up by one, as druids can not.

Wood Elves have special Leather Armor they can make. They should have Cultural Bows that they can make. They should have Shields, such as the Woodlander's shield only made by them, but only High Elfs can make (Woodland Shield and High Elf, do they go together?).
Just my thoughts on the matter.

So basically what you're saying is that pure casters, you know, the really nerdy guys who have their noses stuck in a book all day long, rail thin, no exercise, (from a RP perspective, of course), are going to wear heavy chain? Yet, Druids, who are naturally fit from >living< in the outdoors, travelling from place to place, etc., cannot?

Tell me how this works? All I see are the battle-mages from UO rearing their ugly heads again.

(Oh and it makes no sense for wizards to wear chain. I never saw Gandalf wearing chainmail, nor Merlin)

Yes.. the High Elven smiths made the finest of enchanted mithril, such as that with frodo wore under shirt. And wizards have always been understated. Not the type to be wandering round saying hey I have this really great expensive chainmail on and only a dagger to fight with. I mean come on guys... And quite a lot of mages have had the ability to fight.. Why wade in when you have are watching the whole battle or controlling the tides, that is the job for a brave warrior.

Anyway looking at the price side of things you need a 49th level enchanter to do the mithril properly ... and this just stinks quite frankly.. as if they didnt have enough power.

Gandalf used a damn big sword against a Balrog. I have no doubt that Gandalf could have worn any armor he wanted.

You know what? In an arcane game I played long ago there existed an Item called elven chain mail. You know what else? It was made by High elven magic using smiths. You know what else? They were the ones who wore it.
This game has more in common with dungeons and dragons then it does with any other game.

Never mind, the point is moot.

Check this link from EQ Casters Realm. The post is from Yakatizma, the guy doing all these trade skill upgrades (or at least the guy telling us about them.)

Erudite Forge??

I am a highly skilled Erudite blacksmith.

Does anyone know if there is a racial forge for Erudites?

The Erudites do not currently have a racial forge. Yakatizma said that there will be a forge for them in one of the next few patches. Unfortunately, it looks like there will be no Erudite-forged racial armor (their specialty will be tailoring), probably just weapons or shields.

Well, Erudites tend to shun physical labor, which is probably why they do not have a holy forge. Trolls and Ogres aren't...focused enough to develop something as advanced as this (at least, not yet...)

Erudites, Half Elves, Trolls, Wood Elves, and Halflings do not get cultural plate. Gnomes get some, but mixed with the tinkering skill. Barbarians get Chain Mail.

Make The Armor For;
Orges: Orges & Trolls
Dark Elves: Dark Elves & Half Elves
Humans: Humans, Barbarians, Erudites & Half Elves
High Elves: High Elves, Wood Elves & Half Elves
Dwarves: Dwarves, Gnomes & Halflings
Iskar: Iskar Only

Also barabarians are supposed to have a chain mail type racial armor. This will probably be able to be worn by Humans as well and maybe Erudites.
