Blacksmiths have the ability to forge their own armor and weapons both for personal use and for sale to others.
What are the best strategies for developing and using the blacksmithing skill? What items are the most and least useful ones to forge? Which classes are best suited to take up this trade? Can you make a profit off of blacksmithing, and if so how? Which cities are the best places to practice your trade?
Post your strategies on how to best use and develop the blacksmithing skill, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.
Funny thought just occured to me, I don't think anybodies gonna be makin' mith arrowheads if they require the same temper as mith armour... Don't think anybodies manage to create THAT temper yet, so the stuff's got to be pretty rare... I doubt anyones gonna be in a hurry to fire arrows that took that long to make.
As a reminder first, this is for smiths at skill level 175 or higher. Enjoy.
Thanks to Khallin Spiritcaller Crimson Talon Cazic Thule for virtually all the following information on Northman Ring Mail armor, and Imbued armor. Go to this website to see original bulletin board discussions. http://eqforge.com/forums/Forum16/HTML/008975.html
Items that will be needed to make Northman ringmail:
Medium Quality Rings. Metal Ring recipe is a Large Brick of Ore, File, and Water in the NORTHMAN forge. Same recipe as regular ring but combined in northman forge (triv < 175)
Large Leather Armor: Vendor sold
Large Chainmain Patterns: Halas Lyndia at McDaniels, second floor. North Qeynos, Connie Link, outside of Ironforge Estates. Neriak - Third Gate 695, -1775 Draan N'Ryt Ore, Teir'Dal Smithy Hammer, and Chainmail Pattern Vendor Coif 5002c, Veil 1876c, Neck 625c, Tunic 10,003c, Mantle 8153c, cloak 5002c, skirt 2510c, sleeve 5002c, bracelet 2501c, glove 8753c, Pant 8753c, boot 8753c
Smithy Hammer: Buy: bought:(15pp) at Ikthors in East Freeport, Groflah’s North Freeport, Warrior guild in at Cabilis, vendor in High Hold keep near bank, North Freeport -10, 470 at Groflah’s Kyrin Steelbone Ore Vendor
Recipe for smithy hammer: 1 block ore (10pp), water. wt 18, reusable Essence of Winter drops every 3 or 4 hours off the 3 giants camp, needed to make Frost Temper.
Frost temper recipe: brandy (81c, from taverns), Ice Goblin Blood (dropped by ice goblins, vendors sell for 1.7pp), Essence of Winter (dropped by Ice Giants, a rare drop)
Large Brick of Ore: 3 Small Bricks of Ore (buy in Erudin or HH Keep) + 1 Water Flask
Block of Ore: 3 Large Bricks of Ore + 1 Water Flask
Sheet of Metal: 2 Small Bricks of Ore + 1 Water Flask
Northman chainmail armor:
Recipes: Only these recipes posted so far, the other items will likely vary in number of Medium Quality rings needed only. Suggest looking at other racial armor as i suspect the ratios are consistent.
Tunic: 3 MQ Rings, Large Leather Tunic, Large Chainmail Tunic Pattern, Smithy Hammer, and Frost Temper. By the way, this stuff looks like regular banded
Northman Ring Mail (tunic)AC 17Weight 8.5WAR, CLR, PAL, RNG, SHD, BRD, ROG, SHMHUM, BAR, ERU, ELF, HIE, DEF, HEF, IKS
Conjecture: other types of chain are going to be specific to their races as well: eg Seafarers Ringmail in FP.
Trivial levels: At 168. All the weapons were trivial, Northman kite shield is not trivial. Armor is not trivial. One success on two attempts on each, regular & imbued
Imbued chainmail:. Add one Imbued Ivory to the usual chainmail recipe above.
Jacinth: Needed by enchanter with spell to make imbued irovy. Jacinth is a rare gem, drop from high level mobs 45+, Dino in OoT or Hate / Fear planes. The gem will expire when the enchantment spell is cast. Imbued armor is diety restricted. If agnostic, no beliefs, no armor.
Ivory dropped "rare" gem. "costs" 5-10 hours of camping to get all the components Imbued Northman Ring Mail (tunic) The TribunalAC 17STR +1, WIS +2, SV COLD +2Weight 8.5WAR, BRD, ROG, SHMHUM, BAR, HEF ,
Recipe for Imbued Chainmail: Frost temper + 3 medium quality rings + large chainmail cloak pattern + large leather cloak + smithy hammer + imbued ivory, combined in northman forge (not trivial at 175)
Imbued Northman Ring Mail Cloak The tribunal AC 9 WIS +2 STR +1 SV COLD +2 WT 5.0 WAR BRD ROG SHMHUM BAR HEF
Enchanting chainmail: conjectures: Have an enchanter use Enchant Steel on the large bricks prior to making rings. The spell requires a Jacinth and the Ore to work..
Logged Thunndaar writes: LOTS OF IMBUE SPELLS. Check with your local cleric. Imbued is deity specific.
Imbued stones, and diety: Ivory - The Tribunal (verifted) Jade - Rallos Zek Amber - Cazic Thule Sapphire – Innoruuk Plains Pebble - Karana There is one likely one stone per diety. So, don't be looking to foriegners to make your armor. Clerics and Rangers only wear the imbued.
Deciding on pricing of Imbued Northman Chain Mail armor: Thoughts by Khallin SpiritcallerCrimson TalonCazic Thule Imbued stuff. +1 Str, +2 Wis, +2 vs Cold, and probably close to.
Comparable armor and prices: (In general plane’s armor is being made no drop) Prior level of armor below: (no enhancements, pure AC armor) Bronze AC which sells for 1 to 2pp per AC Thick Leather Apron: AC 8 sells 5pp Straw spun belt: AC 10 sells 100pp
Imbued Chainmail: AC 9, +1 STR, +2 WIS, +2 vs Cold. If you take the stance of fair profit, and with goal of preventing bidding wars for Essence of winters then price at 50 to 100pp. If you look at following armor you could charge up to 250 pp as an upper limit (from an average price for Totemic and see what the market bears. The price could go to 1000 pp considering specific stats not available in totemic may be desired, and the expanded number of classes that can buy it. These are the thoughts of Knarmon after considering the extensive comments Khallin makes, all along these same lines of thoughts.
Next level of armor up: Totemic Armor: a cloak is AC 10, stamina 5, 250pp or more. Cauldron Reed Belt dropped by Bilge in Dagnars Cauldron (around 6K) AC: 6 +5 WIS, +10 HP ALL/ALL Mucilagenous Girdle Howling Stones AC: 7 +6 WIS, +10 HP ALL/ALL Sarnak Hide Girdle AC: 9 +4 STR, +4 DEX, +4 WIS ALL/ALL Flayed Turmoilskin Belt Plain of Fear (around 4-5K, my son reports 40K a better selling price, may be server differences) AC: 9 +6 DEX, +5 WIS SHM/ALL Efreeti Belt Plane of Air AC: 4 +1 INT, +1 STR, +1 WIS ALL/ALL Mammoth Hide Cloak Permafrost, Alchemist (1-2.5K pp) AC: 7 +4 WIS, +5 CR ALL/ALL Molten Cloak Sol A (1-2.5 Kpp) AC: 4 +4 WIS, +4 INT ALL/ALLQuest White Dragonscale Cloak (one at 30K)AC: 10 +9 INT, +9 WIS, +25 CR, +75 MANA ALL/ALL Heirophant's Cloak Sebilis (Wow, only 7K on Povar?) AC: 12 +12 INT, +12 STR, +12 WIS, +10 FR, +10 MR Effect: Haste ALL/ALL
i'm an ogre smith and i'm about to try to make some imbued war plate. the thing I want to know is : do you have to get the adamantite enchanted before you work it into the rings and then into jointing if you want to make magical imbued armor? I know that you don't have to to make regular war plate, but haven't tried the imbued yet and want to know before I spend a few hundred plat making jointing only to find that I needed it enchanted first.

This is sum total of knowlege I have from bulletin boards, wandering western norath etc...
Chainmail:
Halas Lyndia at McDaniels, second floor. North Qeynos, Connie Link, outside of Ironforge Estates.
Neriak - Third Gate 695, -1775 Draan N'Ryt Ore, Teir'Dal Smithy Hammer, and Chainmail Pattern Vendor
Not sure what armor this goes with , or if for tailoring, or what recipe is. “Large Chainmail Patterns” look like sewing patterns. Only other clue is that it is the pattern for elven armor, but doesn’t explain why patterns so widely available. It might go with Northman armor, see post later in this thread.
Go to the Shaman's Crucible, there's a fair amount of talk about Northman Armor. It appears to be around the AC of Bronze (kinda low for the effort involved), and has been successfully made in both non-magical and magical variants.
Thanks to Zyphyr. /cheers I made the scale Temper for the imbued Cabilis Scaled armor!! It is 1 Iksar Blood, 1 Sarnek blood, 1 Froglok blood, and 1 blood water. Now my question is do I have to use blood water in the actual forging of the magical armor? On my info. it does not call for it, only 1 scale temper. As hard as the Iksar blood is to come by... I hate to ***** up because of misinformation.
Silz, Iksar warrior of Bristlebane, 31st lvl and Mastersmith
I did and finally tried to make it with just the temper and no blood water. It worked but I failed. =-(((( Back to forging regular Cabilis scale to raise my skill. 178 is not good enough to make the magical..
Hit combine on a cultural forge (lets say barbarian)and you will get message only a barbarian may use this forge. Also if you listen to the NPC messages for armor making they are saying that plate and other things are made in standard forges and that only the cultural is made in the special forge. Hence high elves have to travel away from home still to learn blacksmithing, and also need to go to freeport to buy a smithing hammer they can use to make normal items and then keledim to get decent molds and then kelethin to make it. Btw Moonlight Temper is very hard to get the bits for. I have some barbarian Temper and ingrediants for the dwarf temper and people positively wanted to pour blood on me (in NK) for ogre temper but can I get a swirling mist or essence of moonlight.. erm.. NO!
It seems that the new ore vendor in Highkeep has a disliking of Paladins. Is there somewhere else on Antonica that i can purchase the needed supplies for fine plate?
Has anyone actually made a royal temper yet??? I think the Full plate armors are the only racial piece that HAS NOT BEEN made by anyone on any server yet. All because of the ingredients that no one knows where to found for the temper. Griffenne's blood, countless of people have killed 1000+ of these and not a single drop of blood dropped. Rain water, no one has confirmed yet on where these are found, many method were tried vai the forage skill in the Karanas part in all situation (rain, water, etc), no luck. only thing that exist so far is the essense of sunshine, but still, it's not fair that other races have made their unique armor while human are still stuck on 2 ingredients. Any info (can be rumour) will be appreicated.
I am having a little bit of a problem understanding how to make this armor. Regular plate for instance. I went to make a bracer. I put in one medium quality folded sheet metal one water one smithing hammer one bracer mold and the leather padding. it said these quantities didn't combine to make anything. I also lost the smithing hammer which I thought was reusable. Are you supposed to put the leather on the armor after you make it? Or what is the deal? I am clueless here. Any help would be appreciated.
First you have to make sure to use store bought water and also you sure it was a PLATE BRACER mold? They are bought in armor by ikthar on the second floor.
Thanks for the response. I discovered my error. I had not paid close enough attention when I purchased my supplies. I used Medium Quality Sheet Metal instead of Medium Quality FOLDED Sheet Metal. Boy, do I feel foolish. *grins* Good Smithing to you all.
I am a mastersmith of the 178th lvl. I finally after much trouble and use of my high lvl druid char. pulled together all the blood waters. Froglok seems easy to find in Innothule Swamp and in upper Guk, I just purchased it from ppl. Sarnek blood drops pretty well in The Lake of Ill Omen and in Dalnirs, I also purchased this from ppl. The hardest to get is Iksar blood. I bought it off a guy who looted it off of a Coerced Iksar in Dalnirs dungeon. My druid is a master brewer of the 170th lvl plus, and tried to combine the bloods, in a Rivervale brew barrel. GRRR does not combine in those quantities to produce anything.. Or whatever that msg is. I put in 1 of each blood. Do you have to be an Iksar to make the Scale Temper? Is there a special Cabilis brew barrel? Is this the wrong components? Or is it bugged??

You need to have the Brick enchanted prior to making the rings (that way you have plenty of chance of completely loosing all your work). As far as enchanting you will need a blue diamond per ring, and a lvl 49 enchanter.

With a skill of 149-150, wisdom of about 137, str of 92, I have successfully forged all pieces of regular Iksar skyiron armor. My first attempts were at skill level 143-145 and I successfully forged everything but tunic and legs.
As fails seem to be rare, or I've been VERY lucky, any Iksar smith should have moderate success with skyiron armor at level 150.
I haven't tried the imbued stuff because I haven't been able to collect all the components. So far, I only have sarnak blood which seems to be fairly common. I'm only level 21 so haven't done much exploring for the iksar or froglok blood yet.
ok so here is my list please add to it especialy for stuff over 135 banded items bracer and gorget around 102 boots, sleeves, tunic, helm, belt, mask, 135 gloves, leggs, mantle 168 i guess cloak is 175 cake round 101 file 21 forged morning star 75 " bastrd sword 75 " 2 hander 91 hooked arrowhead 21 lanter 68 metal bits 21 metal contaners 41 muffin tin 101 pot (ummmm) 122 scaler 41 sewing kit 135 shaped cookie cutter 56 skewer 115 steel boning and studs 41 tool box 51 sharpening weapons 21-27 , deponds on weapon sheet metal 56
please help me figure out the rest especialy if you can tell me any chain pices for new iskar stuff.
heh not to put ya down but you obviously haven't been near the forge in Kaladim (the one right next to the warrior guild), Stormguard Forge is right next to that one.
Because this question is buried in an old thread, I want to repost it as a new item.
With current posts, my notes now look like this:
"Colored Plate = Normal Plate formula + dye + lacquer. Resin and laquer cost 7pp One player reports the following: Now in the book you buy it says you need a jar of acid as well. He used acid and got a finished product."
Which adds yet another question,is the recipe now 1: Normal Plate formula + dye + lacquer + acid or 2: Finished Plate armor + dye + lacquer + acid or 3: is acid optional? or just needed if you dye armor that is already complete? Seeing my smith skill is only 152, it will be a while before I can test this myself.
Anyone else having troubles with faction for this guy? I am a paladin of Karana and he is dubious to me....meaning either i have to go to Steamfont or have someone else buy my materials for me =(
