Blacksmithing

Blacksmiths have the ability to forge their own armor and weapons both for personal use and for sale to others.

What are the best strategies for developing and using the blacksmithing skill? What items are the most and least useful ones to forge? Which classes are best suited to take up this trade? Can you make a profit off of blacksmithing, and if so how? Which cities are the best places to practice your trade?

Post your strategies on how to best use and develop the blacksmithing skill, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

Full Set of Fine Steel Price

I have now sold 2 complete sets of Fine Steel armor. Each time I have charged 1200p for the 13 piece set. I know at lease one set was broken up and sold by another player (I think for a profit)

Got another skill point 178 skill now. . haha.

I would like feedback on this price. Too high? Too low?

Keep in mind I am trying to sell a good amount of this armor to increase my skill.

The Going rate is about 10 times that of Banded. So if you (or I) sell banded at 1 PP per AC, you should Charge 10pp per AC for Fine Steel. This puts your above price in the Ball Park. I personally don't add my Failures to the Formual like some other smiths. At the Fine Steel level Charging 10PP per ac covers costs ... And bring new customers to you by word of month.

Way too low. I have 203 skill and by the time I add up the failures(yes I still have them) and the cost of the paddings etc -- You are looking at 700pp(materials)+170pp(paddings)+280pp(failures)=1150pp. When taking into consideration the time involved(you might have an easier time -- I have a druid buy the ore in steamfont while I am bound at the forge in cabilis and he is bound near cabilis and I pick it up each time) selling this armor for anything under 2000pp is doing everyone a disservice.

If you are selling at loss to build skill on the moneymaker item, what are you building skill for? The market for the enchanted stuff is VERY small due to the component problems -- really there should only be one or two smiths of well over 200 skill for each race. Otherwise all of those components are wasted.

Problem is, if you push the price too high, you are up to usual price for crafted armor which is far superior. The cost is affected tremendously by charisma, (at least 30% savings if you have a charisma 105 doing buying instead of charisma 65 (my barbarian). On other hand, the classes buying this are expanded, so you have a market base. I'm not sure if it is worth it other than the fun of it all.

I still am puzzled by all the emphasis on skilling up, and appreciate the few voices that are saying, what the heck are you skilling up for anyways? (once you hit 175)

It about kills me to hear that people just sell the products to vendors, after the huge crunch on component availability, in the name of skilling up.

the market sets the price though, I'm surprise it is selling so readily at 10pp per ac, so perhaps it can be pushed to 14 or 15pp per ac.

The travel involved is a killer.

the race specific armor is even worse, and there are soo soo many uncertainties for almost all the races on imbueing and enchanting, not to mention difficulty in finding enchanters etc to help with this.

Important: PP per AC is very very bad.
Just compair the cost to make of different items with the same AC to see this.

2000 is perfectly reasionable, I was selling 2500 till I lowered to 2000. Tho I have found that people who won't pay 2500 will also not pay 2000, they rather have it for below cost.

At 2k for all 13 pieces, you are undercuting crafted armor. You also have to realize that crafted armor is warrior only. A full set of crafted (not all pieces have crafted btw) will cost 2600 if your very lucky with finding the lowest price.

I agree with him, whoever sells a full set for under 2k is either very generous...or very stupid. Considering the armor nearly takes 800pp to make, and then you gotta make another set to sell, you have an end profit of about 400pp when you sell a full set. Now even though after making a 2nd set gets you more profit, 2k is well worth a set of armor that has great ac, great weight for it's ac, looks great, and that can be dyed different colors! So for anyone that says I'm crazy or a jackass for selling a full set of fs plate for 2k, start smithing, you'll see what I'm talking about!

Fair Price is determined by market

Fair Price is determined by the market place. I have asked other smiths on my server (Saryrn) what they would charge for a full set. I have never seen a price above 1500.

Smiths despite our trade's difficulty are not all that hard to come by. I cannot sell a single piece of armor when my competition is 25% less expensive.

If I want to continue to make armor and skill up (this is most important to me because the goal for me is to be a true master and make all the enchanted/imbued/etc items consistently) I must sell the armor I make. The more I sell the better.

So I am sorry fellow smiths. So long as I make a small profit (300p) this is good enough for me on a full set I will continue to sell full sets well under 2k. I believe I will price about 1400.

leather backing can be made very easily with the sewing skill. I beleive they become trivial at skill 31. U need to combine low quality skin and sewing thread in a sewing kit :)

i think sewing thread is made by combining 2 spiderling silks in sewing kit.

hope this helps, thanks :)

Correct, only it is silk threads, also a low level tailor skill (21).

The low quality skins can be looted off cat, wolves, bears, or made from mq pelts of same critters by combining mq pelts. This has been described in detail in earlier posts. Check prior pages, and subject lines and you will rapidly find this.

How or where are mediun quality rings made or bought. i tried to make them the same way regular metal rings are made both in a regular forge and in the northman forge, my character is a barbarian. Unfortunately, each time i always get the "does not combine" phrase. yet peeps are making the imbued northman ring armor, so how do you get the rings

Large Brick of Ore, File, Flask of Water at they must be combined in the Northman Forge. If you combine them in the standard forge, you will get metal rings, but not the correct ones.

Also, at what skill level should i begin my first attempt atfine plate? And are these skill levels the same for cultural armor? And lastly, how do we dwarves imbue our cultural armor? Just add an imbued ruby to the mix??

Per posts on this board, players are reporting 80% success rates on more than 10 attempts at fine plate/steel armor at skill level 175.

At skill level 165 drops to 50 to 60% so unless you are rich, push that skill up.

I've just started, and am 4 success for 4 attempts at skill level 175.

Getting the supplies is even more a problem than the cost, as so much travel is involved.

Comparing my charisma 65 smith, to my charisma 105 enchanter price drop over 25% with the enchanter. Guess who does my buying when I stocked up? translation cost to make a full set of fine plate ranges from 705pp to 920pp roughly depending on who does your buying, and how you chose to procure the leather backings. IF no failures.

Also in planning travel etc, neither the bricks, blocks, or folded sheets stack. The molds do not stack. The leather backing does, so plan inventory spaces appropriately.

If you dye armor, the jars of acid (105c) and lacquer (105c) are items, do not stack, the resin (5250c) fortunately does stack. The empty vials (210c) fortunately stack also.

Most of this data has not been posted on this board before, and is from recent personal experience.

for what it is worth, here are my sketchy notes collected from this bb.

Imbued Dwarven Brellium Armor:
Same recipes as Dwarven Brellium, with addition of imbued ruby which adds 132 pp to cost to make. Spliner Etherikith writes: I did find out though that you MUST enchant brellium before it can be imbued. I tried the bracer (non-enchanted) with a imbued ruby and it said "This forge will not accept those items, try another forge.." and it gave me all the items back.

Imbued items:
These are for race specific smithing recipes. The components are made with level 34 Halas Shaman spell, or level 28 Cabilis shaman spell, or level 28 cleric spell from West Freeport Temple of Marr. In Barbarian specific armor, there is imbued ivory and imbued jade that is part of recipes. Components and sources for these high level spell (shaman levl 28-34 depending on race) made items unknown. Other racially specific armor had imbued components also, amber, titanium etc.
Logged Thunndaar writes: There are LOTS OF IMBUE SPELLS. Check with your local cleric. Imbued is deity specific.
Imbued stones, and diety: Ivory - The Tribunal (verified) (vendors buy for 6pp, vendors sell for 8.75pp, stacks, wt 0.1), Jade - Rallos Zek, Amber - Cazic Thule, Sapphire – Innoruuk Plains Pebble (foraged) – Karana, a diamond 211pp - Mithanial Marr. Bertoxxulous - black sapphire, 105pp. Bristlebane - peridot, 10.5pp. There is one likely one stone per diety. Clerics and Rangers only wear the imbued. Imbued armor is diety restricted. If agnostic, no beliefs, no armor.
Jyro Popalokus writes that each gem is deity specific, and anything made with a gem will only be usable by followers of that deity. There are, a number of cultural armors and weapons that only use stuff enchanted by Enchanters (no imbued gems) and are therefore not deity specific. Dwarven armor, for instance, comes in enchanted and imbued enchanted. (Made without or with a gem. The imbued enchanted is more difficult according to Yakatizma.

Tempers:
These are needed for very high level race specific blacksmith made armor. All tempers are reportedly trivial at 135 brewing skill. Components are very difficult to find. One out of every list of components for each of the Tempers is VERY Rare.
Blood Temper: (orges?) Orge swill (bought in Oggok), elf blood, human blood, dwarf blood
Earthen Temper: (Dwarf) Dwarven ale, lava rock (dropped by Blazing elemental, 2 drops mercury (dropped by earth elementals), combine in brew barrel. Cost 4.3pp
Frost Temper: (Barbarian) Brandy(81c), ice goblin blood (dropped by ice goblins, vendors sell for 31pp, stacks, looks like a blue vial, wt 0.1), essences of winter (Ice Giants in Everfrost)
Moonlight Temper: (elf) Probable recipe: Morning dew, vials of swirling mists, 2 essence of moonlight combined in brew barrel by brewer of skill >135 or you lose the very difficult to find components. Mistressa Dominatria implies this is correct recipe. Essence of shadow failed with this recipe
Royal temper: (Human) combine in brew barrel: rain water, griffenes blood, 2 drops essence of sunshine. Human Qeynos forge
Scale Temper: (Iksar) 1 froglok blood, 1 iksar blood, 1 sarnak blood, bloodwater, combine in brew barrel.
Sea Temper is used for all the Seafarer stuff (Freeort forge) and Field Plate. 2 Mugs of Sea Foam + 1 Saltwater Seaweed + Fish Wine (bought or brewed). (Trivial ?) Make in brew barrel
Shadow temper: (Dark elves) 1 elven blood, and 2 essence of shadows (dropped by Shadowed men), and a neriak nectar

Keep killing them, maybe you'll get lucky. Well I had 3 royal tempers, and 3 sheets of high quality folded sheet metal, so I tried to make some of the Qeynos full plate bracers.

My skill is 177. In the royal qeynos forge I combined the following. Full plate bracer mold, Smithing hammer, leather padding, chain jointing, royal temper, platinum bar, and 1 high quality folded sheet metal.

I lacked the skill
I lacked the skill again.

So I replaced the platinum bar with the gold bar. I lacked the skill a 3rd time.

ARGHHHHHHHHH!! I guess I go back to fine steel until I hit 200+ skill.

Also originally I tried to make the full plate collar. I combined the above with the collar mold instead of the bracer mold. I got a message saying these items couldn't be combined in this forge. And they all disapeared. When I opened the forge again they were all sitting in the forge. So I combined again. Same message. Closed the forge, opened it again and there were the components. . . I believe the collar is broken currently.

Not a good day on EQ. . .

You guys have the most confusing series of posts I have ever seen in spite of much useful information. Not to mention after writing all this, I realized QEYNOS not Freeport like I was assuming.

I think you all missed the fact that Gzar had the correct recipe for full plate bracers do to lack of skill message. Since we never have major compent shifts within a series of armor class his conclusion that bracers is broken must be true, unless it breaks all prior patterns and requires 2 mq sheets of folded metal.

Also refering back to full plate table by Rooke FREEPORT FORGE: (are people confusing this with field plate I still ask?)we have:

Full Plate recipe per Rooke: see racial forged armor link from Allakhazams main skills page:
Human, qeynos forge only, wearable by humans, barbs, erudites, half elves.
Recipe: Mold, smithy hammer (non race specific?), leather padding, high quality folded sheets of metal, (and!) chain jointing, royal temper, and one of your choice: bar of silver, electrum, gold, platinum.
Enchanted Full plate recipe per Rooke: same as above, only both the high quality folded sheets of metal AND the choice of bar of silver, electrum, gold, or platinum must be enchanted.

Which leaves these questions:
1. DalurS, since you apparently succeeded, what was name of armor, and what forge did you use with that recipe? It fits nothing, that has ever been posted. If this data on basis of success, did you err in what you posted?
2. Havens: what is FS Plate, that you think DalurS is speaking of? the non racial Fine Steel Plate, (that can't be, very different recipe)? what forge did you make it on. Obviously you have success also, platinum full breastplate is obvious different series of armor than Full Plate.

MY SYNTHESIS OF THIS POSTED INFORMATION in this thread:
Full plate: (again enigmatic non specific posts, contradictions, I think people are using full plate, field plate, and fine plate (non racial) interchangeably, FS Plate ??fine steel plate))

Gzar Zigdog of Sarym reports: Qeynos full plate bracers: lack skill message, so correct recipe: My skill is 177. In the royal qeynos forge I combined the following. Full plate bracer mold, Smithing hammer, leather padding, chain jointing, royal temper, platinum bar, and 1 high quality folded sheet metal. failed twice due to lack of skill. Failed again with gold.

full plate collar: (probably collar is broken) Wrong recipe indicated by did not combine message. Only change was use of collar mold. He did recover components as racial specific forge (need to close, then reopen)

DalurS writes: If you(Gzars?)were combining FP mold (collar), smithing hammer, leather padding, chain jointing, royal temper, platinum bar and 1 sheet of HQ metal; then you were using the wrong stuff to make a normal FP collar. For normal FP collar, you need 1 mold, 1 smithing hammer, 1 leather backing and 1 sheet of MQ folded sheet metal (not chain jointing) 1 flask of water (not summoned or foraged, not royal temper), and no plat These trivial somewhere around 180. Bracers trivial at 182. Visors are still not trivial at 188

Havens Soulblesser writes: DalureS is wrong here because the last recipe you stated is for FS plate not Full plate. I got the same message he stated that he got when I tried to use an enchanted plat bar and nothing else enchanted. You need the chain jointing and the sheet metal to be enchanted. What is wrong with his Recipe is that DalureS needs to use a Folded sheet of metal for all Full plate smithing. I made a Platinum Breast plate at skill 175.

Platinum Full Breastplate: Full Breasplate mold, smithy hammer, leather padding/backing, 3 HQ folded sheets of metal, Royal temper, Chain jointing. (looks like you left the platinum out of recipe). This = AC22 Wt11 lighter in color than cleric planer armor and darker than Mithril.

I notice most web sites are not updated, indeed, I can't get my own webmaster for my clan to update my document, so it is 2 months out of date, now. All the web sites are immensely valuable, and each has their own strengths.

I am constantly correcting my own notes.
I am sure all notice that I am a heavy contributer of this compiled info to the board. I usually try to keep it short and sweet, but sometimes a big chunk of info seems most appropriate.

feel free to email me at knarf16@aol.com for my latest version (50pages, microsoft word format, or request rich text format otherwise please)

There are actually 5 types of Human Full Plate. The first 4 are all the same with no enchanted components. One for each metal type - silver, electrum, gold, platinum.

The 5th type is the enchanted full plate. It requires the many of the components to be enchanted by a high level enchanter. In addition to a good ac it contains stat bonuses. The enchanted full plate also requires a bar of metal. I am unsure if there is multiple types of this armor as well.

The correct recipie for Qeynos Full Plate is - Full plate Mold (NOT A STANDARD or FINE STEEL PLATE MOLD) - High quality folded sheet metal - Royal temper - chain jointing (there is no such thing as high quality chain jointing (large brick High quality ore + files = do not combine)) - Smithing hammer - Non enchanted metal bar of silver-electrum-gold-platinum - and leather backing.

If you get confused on the recipie there is a book at the vendor in qeynos where the full plate molds are sold. It clearly defines the recipie in that book. That recipie is 100% correct.

These 7 items (more if piece requires multiple sheets of metal) must be combined in the qeynos royal forge.

On 3 bracer attempts of the above recipie I lacked the skill (at 177 skill, 2 attempts platinum bars and one attempt with gold bar). When I tried the collar. I recieved a unique message - These items do not combine in this forge, try another forge. I then got my components back. Thus the collar in my opinion is a broken item.

Havens if you did the BP and I don't doubt you did you got hugely lucky . . since I am failing on bracers with 177 skill.
Yes i got lucky

Yes i got very lucky. But i followed my own rule. You almost always succeed on your first attempt at a new range. This is just from my expeirence with jewl craft and the such. That when i went to make my first banded piece i succeeded no matter the piece and when i went to make my first plat piece (now you have to put everything that is in the plate catagory here so the first piece of plate be it Fine plate Field or in my case platinum) I succeeded. I also found this true in jewel craft when i moved from electrum to silver to gold to platinum that I succeeded on my first try each time except when i tried gold for the first time i failed but all other were successes.

So my thoughts when i went to make this BP was to go for the hardest piece i could make. Even though the cloaks are harder they do not show up on your character is why i chose a BP.

But all of this may just be a coincedence but I figured i would post my theory and if anybody else is haveing the same luck as me post it

You could have something - The First time I made Cured silk armor (GI) I made it. I have fail 7 times sense then. Same with Gem Types - This weekend I spent Lots of PPs on Jewelry Skill. And every first gem I tried I made. Who Know could be the luck of those Random Number gerators base on you skill level.

The recipe I posted was for Fine Plate. Sorry for the misunderstandingl.

Here are notes I've accumulated on dark elf stuff from various boards. None of it is first hand.
Forges are easy to spot, just explore your home city dark elves. Sometimes they are in back courtyards, but all the new forges I know of are in wide open courtyards. Most of this from Allakhazam's links to Rooke's research on racial armor. (the page that you choose blacksmithing as a link as this link at the top, the scroll bars are hard to understand at first when you enter it, look for greater than and lesser than signes << >> Those have much nicer tables, here is easy to to copy, edit, format, text. I suspect Rooke has updated things since I got my core of notes from his stuff.
Enjoy.

Indigo Sabre: (trivial <154) 1HS Sword damage 7 delay 24, all races. Sinuuyanea Nocturne, Heretic, Quellious writes: (smithing skill 157) made an Indigo Sabre (non-imbued). It was trivial. Recipe: folded sheet of adamantite, a curved blade mold, a hilt mold, a pommel mold, and a bottle of neriak nectar. (a bug involving swapping of nector and water has been fixed) This item is not lore, not no drop, and not magical.
Imbued Indigo Sabre (of Innoruuk): Valiir Xh'ree Smith skill 175 reports success with: 1 Folded Sheet of Adamantite, 1 Pommel Mold, 1 Hilt Mold, 1 Curved Blade Mold, 1 Shadow Temper, 1 Imbrued Sapphire. 1HS, Damage 7, delay 24, str 3, intell 3, wt 5, Magic Innoruuk. classes: war, shm, rog. Races: hum, def, hef, troll. Valir writes: NPC gave the following info: 1) need to have a Sapphire Imbrued by a Cleric of Innoruuk to make it magical, this costs a Blue Diamond to cast (right?), in addition to the Sapphire. 2) When you go to forge the sabre, you substitute Shadow Temper instead of Neriak Nectar (Imbrued Sabre only)...

Tier'Dal Dragoon Shield = Kite Shield Mold + 2 Sheet of Adamantite + Teir'Dal Smithy Hammer + Shadow Temper (best report as of 10/6/00) Tier'Dal Dragoon Shield: AC 11, +2 sta. Wt. 10. Classes: C, Ro, Sk, Wr. Races: Def, Hef. Made by Dark Elves through the blacksmithing skill.
Valius Soulkeep reports: None of following recipes actually worked. Using the Teir'Dal forge, I tried a small kite shield mold and a regular kite shield mold. I attempted it with neriak nectar, shadow temper, water and all combinations of them, along with a sheet of adamantite, teir 'dal smithing hammer (attempted both with and without) and both with and without an imbued sapphire. Every combination attempted resulted “these items do not combine in this forge”, meaning the recipe is either broken, or all these are wrong. Note, shadow temper is made with 1 elven blood, 2 essence of shadows AND a neriak nectar.
(knarmon: only combo not tried seems to be 2 sheets of adamantite that some other races use, the following seems to confirm this) Valiir Xh’ree, Veeshan reorts: 'Hail' the vendor in the weapons or armor shop. This NPC says recipe is: a regular kite shield mold, 2 Adamantite Sheets (Not Folded), and all the other normal junk for Adam-smithing

Well with hopes held high of something my lady ranger could wear for arms until I can help her get the ivy ones. I decided to try and make the Mithril Plate Vembraces.
Well I made them after some annoyances with brewing and finding temper materials.
All I have to say is that they are dissappointing. Rangers can not wear them. It is considered plate... so ONLY cleric, bard, warrior or paladin of race High, wood or half elf.
AC 11 (1 better then fine plate)
WT 3.4 (.6 lighter then the small fine plate I believe).
BTW tried to add an embued emerald and wouldnt work.

On 2nd attempt tonight I made the Imbued Woodlanders Shield. Hmm.. Was it worth it??
AC 11, STR 2, STA 2, WIS 2, WT 10.

Looks like I am going to have to aim for enchanted mithril to get anything interesting.

The racial recipies all call the magical armor enchanted, but I suspect from your notes that imbued mithril using emeralds is what you are using, and enchanted and imbued and synomyms. I hate to assume this.

Enchanted rings I assume will be made with imbued large brick of mithril? I've been enjoying watching these mysteries unravel.

I tried imbued emeralds because there is no NPC recipe for magic mithril plate, although I am sure this is possible. I had emeralds and thought it a possibility as barbarian chain can be imbued, so gave it a go.

I am also guessing that enchant mithril(200pp a cast -level 49) goes on each brick for each ring, although I have yet to try. Its next on my list now that plate is not going to be what I had hoped.

As there is an enchanted mithril recipe I doubt there is an imbued version although maybe there is an imbued & enchanted version.

I will try and keep the wording as imbued for gems added and enchanted for the spell on the metal.

Has anyone actually tried making enchanted fine plate/steel armor yet? If so, do you enchant the mq large bricks? the mq blocks of ore? or the mq folded sheets of metal, or can any of the three be done. I hope it's the folded sheets!

Here are conjectures I've accumulated from this board:

NOTES OF POSSIBILITY OF ENCHANTING FINE PLATE/STEEL ARMOR
Enchanted fine plate: theoretically this should be possible. There is an enchant steel spell, and should add enhancements to armor if race specific trials are a guide.

Enchanting Steel: Alderon Brell server writes: An enchanter can cast enchant steel on a brick of HQ ore, giving an enchanted brick of HQ ore. Each spell takes a jacinth, a rare drop gem, that apparently vendors sell for about 1pp (when one has been sold to them)

Jacinth: Jacinth is a rare gem, drop from high-level mobs 45+, Dino in OoT or Hate / Fear planes. The gem is consumed when the enchantment spell is cast.

Next question: what zones with vendors would be adjacent to these zones where players might be selling their jacinths.

Knarmon, am pasting a message found on www.eqtraders.com posted by Gnorth Grumblespike on a slightly different topic. Of note in this message is how he enchanted sheets of metal. I dont know if these sheets will play a part in what you're looking for, but its good info :) The original post had a screenshot of the stats of the item etc which lends a little credence to the post and makes me think it is probably true.

-------------------------------------------------

Silvered Weapons Confirmed
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Heres how I did it:

2 Enchanted Large HQ Bricks of Ore (2 Jacinths)
Each one needs to be put in the HUMAN CULTURAL forge with 1 water = 1 Small Brick of HQ Enchanted Ore

2 Small Bricks of HQ Enchanted Ore + Water = Enchanted Sheet of Metal (in cultural forge)

Enchanted Sheet of Metal + Enchanted Bar of Silver + Hilt Mold + Pommel Mold + Long Blade Molds + Flask of Water = Silvery Long Sword (in REGULAR forge)

Unfortunately this is kind of a disappointment.. since its stats are total crap. Unless you think 2 planes gems for a sword 1 delay better than fine steel is good..

Gnorth Grumblespike

(I'll post up a pic later)

So all 3 of those that needed testing on the recipe page are confirmed, Small Bricks and Sheet in the cultural forge, actual sword in the regular forge.

EDIT: I didn't actually try the conversions in a normal forge, so they may work, I didn't really want to lose enchanted ore, so I didn't take the chance.
I think this is what we are looking for

I thought the question was: Can a regular sheet (folded or not) be enchanted? I doubt it but it would really be nice if that was so.

Field Plate: In talking to Ikthar Freehart (NPC) in Ikthar’s forge in East Freeport, Knarmon gets the following:

Need High quality ores dropped only by goblins. (Knarmon notes showing up at vendors in Halas a lot, likely from permafrost goblins. Use race specific forge in west freefort by human only. Need plate mold, sea temper, smithy hammer, leather backing, and chain jointing, and 1-3 folded sheets. You must work HQ ores yourself. (Knarmon adds, likely: 3 HQ bricks ore and water into HQ block of ore (MQ blocks used for fine plate armor do not need smithy hammer, and not mentioned by Ikthar here to work the ore), add water, smithy hammer, to the HQ block of ore to get your HQ folded sheet of metal. (Knarmon: elsewhere is stated that all HQ ores and sheets must be made in either royal qeynos forge in qeynos, or Freeport forge in West Freeport) Ikthar adds: 1 sheet for visor, gorget, bracers, 2 sheets for helm, pauldrom, girdles, vambraces, gauntlets, boots, and 3 sheets for bp, greaves, and cloaks.

A small note on the evergreen leaves. Someone has put the locs up on some webpage but I am not sure which one. I have watched people start to search by loc. As I already know 3 places from fairly early on, it amused me to watch them while invisible. Upon questioning they said they had found locs on a page but werent having that much luck with most of them. Not surprising with so few spawns and so many searchers.

I made my first full suit of green.. I had a Shaman friend try to turn 20 leaves into dye. Extracting was trivial (4 fails though), and he wasnt getting any trivial message or fails for the combining in a jar. Can this bit be done by anyone? Excuse me if I have missed this in another post. I have been trying to level?

Having trouble finding charcoal
# Oct 20 2000 at 10:39 PM Rating: Decent
I've been to trying forever to get charcoal to create black dye. I've read that the Air Elementals in e commons drop it. I've killed at least two dozen of them with nothing. Someone in the zone then told me that the Air Elementals don't drop charcoal, but the Fire Elementals in lavastorm do. Now, I've easily killed 30 or 40 of these guys. I've gotten iron oxide, but no charcoal. Now I'm told that I have to kill Earth Elementals in Najena.
What the heck really drops charcoal? Any clues what the easiest way is to get it? I've become really frustrated, please help. Thanks.
RE: Having trouble finding charcoal
# Oct 23 2000 at 3:45 AM Rating: Decent
OK just for the recorded on this one.

All the Elementals drop the components in Najena ... Charcoal being the rarest. They also Drop the Drops of Merucry need for Temper and the what ever mist also needed for Temper.

My Hubby and I have scored 5 Charcoal's, about 10 of the Brown Rust components, and maybe 6 of the Red Rust components. I have about 15 Merucry's and 11 of the mist in the bank now.

Good luck this are rare drops from the Elementals so you have to just keep trying your luck at it.

Have to agree with other posts. Its not just air types. I got one today from an earth elemental. Notch up another hours hunting.
Loot from elementals I think was 2 gold earings, 2 silver rings, 2 rose quarts and 1 charcoal today. Not a good day. I did find time yesterday to kill the named clockwork and get a little Kerran toy in exchange for the tinkered one it dropped... something to hug in times of despair. Along with a whole 1 russet oxide... woo woo

Dye components
# Oct 22 2000 at 4:02 AM Rating: Default
Not addressing your questions directly, but at end are my compilations of notes on charcoal, including putting together the comments here.

I'm still accumulating a stockpile of dye components and haven't made anything yet. To that end I let my clan know a few months ago what I need, and they have been giving me a steady supply of stuff they run into. I'll take this as an opportunity to list my accumulated notes on sources for all components for dyes. My opinion is these components are best accumulated by keeping a sharp eye out while in pursuit of other endevours.

Dye component locations (dropped items): If you buy out vendor inventories in zones where these items drop you will likely find the needed components faster than hunting them. Auction for them, enlist the aid of your friends. Everyone with first hand experience reports these are rare drops.

Permafrost Crystals: blue verified by Hallkin, in Everfrost from ice goblins, a player reports 1 in 25-30 ice goblins. On the Shaman Disease and Poison Merchant in Overthere (probably left by a player?).

Evergreen Leaves: green verified by Hallkin, spawn on ground in greater Feydark, looks like little green chip, not foraged. One player reports searching for an hour for each one found. Potion Seller in Kelethin and in Overthere.

Sarcoscypha Fungus: red: verified by Hallkin, Fungus men in Innothule, drops in Unrest, Evil Shaman Herb seller in Innothule? and in Firona Vie. Reported: spawns on the groud in Faires camp in Lesser FD.
Pink is light pink now (3 resin, sarcoscypha fungus), not neon pink.

Russet Oxide: red, earth elementals in Najena, merchant by the Hole that sells Medium Quality Ore, and Fironia Vie (broken recipe?).

Jack o'Lantern Fungus: orange, scarecrows in west Karana, Dwarven Poison Merchant in Dagnor's Cauldron and Overthere. Reported that spawns on the groud in Faires camp in LesserFD.

Iron Oxide: brown, earth elementals in Najena, Steamfont, Gypsy Camp in Rathe Mountains and Overthere. (broken recipe?)
Drakn reports a few 30 kills of fire elementals of Najena. Tepxal reports from Stone and Iron Guardians in Nektolus Forest. Steam elementals in streamfont.

Charcoal: black, Mist elementals in East Commonlands in sandy areas, use see invisible to find, Gypsy Camp in Lavastorm and Overthere, earth elementals in steamfont, Najena. Clan brother, Tepxal, looted from Stone and Iron Guardians in Nektolus Forest. Drakn reports: East Commons none on several dozen kills of Air Elementals, Lavastorm Fire Elementals none on 30 kills, in spite of others reporting finding charcol on them. Seagul reports steam (elementals?) in steamfont by first hand observation. He reports 3 to 20 hours of hunting elementals yields only a few charcoals.

Air type elementals drop it..
Air in EC - been told
Mist in Nejana - was with someone when they got it
Steam in Steamfont - partner got when she was grouped with me
I was also told there were other things that dropped it.. but no experience of this..
Its rare though as you know from your experience of hunting.. I have got about 3 from 20 hours worth of me and my partner hunting... Just KOS all elementals and you will get some someday..
Russet and Iron Oxides drop from the Earth elementals mostly.

The Gnome named Fixxin Followig in the North Karanas who is a part of the four man werewolf slaying team will give you a smithing book detailing how to make enchanted silver werewolf slaying weapons. He requires you to give him one bar of unenchanted silver.

I beg you other smiths please list any finds like these so that all of us may eventually have a collection of all recipes. Thanks in advance.

Race specific refers to the smith, not the wearer of the armor. As there is a Erudin forge now, ouside the armory, we await only the recipies.

For all race specific armors, a long list of races and classes, along with diety limitations for imbued stuff exist.

It is useful as smiths start making race specific armor that they give the races and classes and diety limitations along with costs, sources of components, skill levels and success rates.

I've gleaned some of this from armor descriptions as they have been posted in allakhazams data base, and some from smith reports and put them into my master document. if my webmaster posts my most recent version for me (wink!)

From my expirience Erudites do not get a race specific armor. Their are rumors of Erudites in the future haveing racial robes and such.

I thought that Erudites could wear the human specific Anotnian armor (as can Barbarians and Half-Elves).

I have a friend that makes the Chain and it's Small only -- I'm trying to see if there is a Medium version that a caster could wear. The Mithril Chain is Caster Wearable ...

Thanks

NOTE: I wonder if the Patterns determine the Size class? I will look closer at the patterns this week.

Yes the patterns do Determian the Size of the armor cause the patterns say Small, Medium & Large. The Cultured Armor Recipe for Humans is on the first Stop FROM Butcher to FP they are on one of the guys there in the single Huts. Also could some one tell me how to make the Mithril Chain Please? Thanks

Sorry guys!!
I think this stuff is race specific. Patterns wont help. Just like you need the medium mold to make plate but only HIGH, WOOD AND HALF ELVES get to use it.
So for you Human and Erudite mages.. sorry your out of luck for the moment.
This seems to Be true

From all my Running around I believe you correct. The Chainmail that can be made is armor class PC only. Caster like myself are SOL. Should have been a elf eh?

For those swarthy dwarf types like myself I can confirm Lava rock drops in Skyfire Mountains off of Wyverns. Quite possibly other mobs in zone but I personally got one off of a Wyvern. Lava rock is used in the earthen temper recipe.

Wow Wurms in Sky, FG in Sol B. Talk about some work. I personally have looted 4 off of fire elementals in Najena and Lavastorm. It was about a 1 in 10 drop rate but still seems a touch easier to me. :)

I was hunting in Skyfire Mountains lasnt night and one of the mobs dropped the lava rock. I will check, but I am pretty sure it was a wyvern that it came from

Hello all,

This is what I have learned while progressing in the trade of Master Smithy. A little about myself: I am a lvl 30 Iksar Shammy, int 84, wis 186, cha 112. I started with a 500pp to up skill. I began by placing 20 points into my smithy skill, and then started making banded gorgets. Once they became trivial I worked on banded boots.. Then gloves.. Then finally capes. At this point I went to racial armor gloves, for everything except cape and leggs was trivial. While making banded I lost little as far as pp goes, for I failed but a few times while making each item and sold back to the vendors.. Racial armor I actually saw an increase in pp, for the vendors pay you more than it costs. I started making full sets of banded well below the Master Smithy ****** and started making racial at 104 skill lvl with a 1 out 4 failure rate. From my experience folks, it leads me to believe the higher (and I mean really higher) the wis the better off you'll be in the long run. At 184 skill lvl I cannot remember the last time I failed at making anything. I'm not saying that I cannot fail, just that it's not noticeable.
Of that 500pp I started with I more than made it back with the racial armor sails to vendors. And it took me 2 weeks/29 hours of actual work to get my skill to where it is now.

I hope this bit of info helps in some way.

very interesting but also just plain crazy. i like the whole idea of having to learn by making bits and studs, pot, cookie cutters, etc., it adds more to RP aspect of the game. that said, understand im not saying i don't like this method or wouldn't use it if i could. it's just my opinion - im not saying it's wrong.
Wisdom thing
# Oct 20 2000 at 8:35 AM Rating: Default
I have read that it does not effect the skills in anyway. To that I have to say Bull. I created two PC's with the following Stats:

1 - WIS 75 , INT 110
2 - WIS 100, INT 100

Both PC's skilled up doing the same armor products. PC #2 had a 50% higher success rate then PC #1. Skill increases were the about the same PC#1 - 37 and PC#2 - 35

Very useful information. The key is wisdom I believe, it is the failures that drive the costs of skilling up through the roof.

Now, how many of us have the foresight to create such a character?

Human Royal Plate
# Oct 19 2000 at 7:14 PM Rating: Default
Well some bad news for us Human royal smiths. Now we need the aid of a 49+ enchanter that has the spell Enchant steel to make the Enchanted full plate. This spell takes a jacinith to cast and has to be casted on each block of HQ ore you plan on useing. My only experience of this gem is it dropping off 50+ mobs. So making this stuff is not going to be cheap if this spell does use a Jacinith as its componet. But from what i have seen is the enchanted bracers are AC 12 str 3 and that is using and enchanted piece of electrum.

Just thought i would post this info and see if anybody knows other wise. Also the Chain jointing and the folded sheets of metal also have to be enchanted not just the preciouse metal bar.

Attempts, Pricing, dying and Sales of Fine Steel

Well, I have now made 17 of 20 attempts at Fine Steel armor.

I have 175 skill, and made 3 of 4 on Bp's, 2 of 2 on Cloaks, shoulders and sleeves, 4 of 4 on bracers, 1 of 1 on collars and mask, and 1 of 2 on boots and 1 of 2 on gloves.

However, I have gained Zero skill (still not sure which stat affects learning skills for certain) My intelligence is 70. Wis is 80 (ranger class). I tried dumping a bunch of wisdom items on him when skilling him up originally and it made no difference over 300 attempts.

Sales of the armor have been acceptable. I sell mostly in North Freeport. I have charged 170 for the BP, 150 for legs. For all the two sheet armor I charge between 90 and 120. For all the one sheet items I charge between 40 and 50. These rates vary based on the price of the mold. I have yet to sell a cloak.

People have differening reactions to the price some people are very happy to pay it. Others seem to think I am drunk.

One major request I am not handling is dying armor. The components simply take to long to go and get. I will dye armor for people if they go get the dye components.

FYI I have bought essence of sunshine in freeport for 20p each. Makes those royal tempers much easier to make. I will let you all know when I get the guts to hit the combine button on the human full plate.
