Blacksmithing

Blacksmiths have the ability to forge their own armor and weapons both for personal use and for sale to others.

What are the best strategies for developing and using the blacksmithing skill? What items are the most and least useful ones to forge? Which classes are best suited to take up this trade? Can you make a profit off of blacksmithing, and if so how? Which cities are the best places to practice your trade?

Post your strategies on how to best use and develop the blacksmithing skill, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

Considering the intense confusion in earlier posts, I think it warrented to post what I have pulled together from allakhazams web pages, and my notes. Here is a nice clean text file. No flipping from web page to web page. Especialy useful are my extensive notes on how to get and make the needed components. Copy and save it if you are a human smith, and add to it as you get stats on more of the items. Let Allakhazam know so he can update his tables. Even though I'm not human, it helps me to know what they need, so I can provide components that I can't use. I'm accumulating a lot a components that other racial smiths use, and would toss them, except now I know what they are useful for. For instance, I am accumulating a lot of High Quality ores, never knew what the heck it was for, and now I know, human smiths in freeport desparately need it.

This is long, but well worth it!

HUMANS IN FREEPORT

Component recipies and sources

Field plate armor
Imbued field plate armor
Seafarer ring/sea armor ringmail

COMPONENT RECIPES AND SOURCES:
Medium Quality Rings. Large Brick of Ore, File, and Water. Use the freeport forge.
This is the same recipe as regular ring but combined in specialty forge (triv < 175) Number of rings will vary according to armor type.
Sea Temper is used for all the Seafarer stuff and the Field Plate.
2 Mugs of Sea Foam + 1 Saltwater Seaweed + Fish Wine (bought or brewed). (Trivial ?) Make in brew barrel
Mugs of Sea Foam: dropped by Seafury Cyclopses, maybe aquagoblins , in Ocean of Tears (actually looks like a mug)
Saltwater Seaweed: occasionally recieved when fishing in the OoT (got two at about 85 fishing skill, so you don't need to be a Master Fisher)
Black pearls: dropped item, rare, not vendor sold, value 21pp (not sure where this comes from, perhaps what a vendor pays for it, or sells it for when a player sells one to vendor. Market value is what players are willing to buy or sell for.
Oak staff: sold by vendors that sell new weapon molds. In Halas, at Bloody Blades.
High Quality sheet of metal: 2 small bricks of High Quality ore, water. Confirmed by Gzar Zigdog.
High quality small brick ore 11,497-15,933c, non stackable, wt 7.0, (HH keep, Miner Harton) (silver in color) when sold to other vendors by players 17pp. Dropped by Permafrost goblins near King room, Also DE vendor near Neriak Forge. Enchantable with enchant steel. Vendor buys for 2818c. Nintalten writes: Goblins in Solusek A also drop the small/large bricks of high quality ore. They drop fairly frequently. After spending about 1-2 hrs in Permafrost I had about 5 peices of small ore and 2-3 peices of the large. You can camp the rare spawns while doing it and get some half decent equipment. Used by humans only in Freeport forge, for specialty armors and shields.
Smithy Hammer: sold by vendors, at Ikthars in east freeport, see intro to race specific armors.
High quality large brick ore 34,650-48,109c, non stackable, (silver in color), wt 14, (Miner Harton, High Hold keep.) Dropped by permafrost goblins near King room. Also DE vendor near Neriak Forge. Halas, magic shop 41pp (may not be regular stock item) Enchantable with enchant steel. Needed to make field plate human race specific Freeport forge only
HQ block of ore: 3 large bricks of HQ ore, water (human Freeport forge, field plate)
High quality folded sheet metal: High Quality block of ore, water, smithy hammer. In regular forge. Cost to make 10pp
Confirmed by Gzar Zigdog.
Leather backing: tailor made, sewing kit low quality wolf/cat/bear (not lion, not puma), and silk threads ( made with two spiderling silks)
Chain Joining: metal ring, file, smithing hammer, water. Combine in regular forge. Component for field plate.
Rings: large brick of ore, file, water. Make in regular forge, trivial <175 likely way below 175. Component for field plate human smith only armor.
Medium quality metal rings: Medium Quality Large Brick of Ore, File, and Water in the NORTHMAN forge. (trivial <175 reported) used for Imbued Northman Armor By: Anonymous wt 4.0, vendor sell 6.1pp, not stackable, icon looks like a metal bit. This is for human made only, searfarer armor.

FIELD PLATE ARMOR:
Field Plate: Talking to Ikthar Freehart (NPC) in Ikthar’s forge in East Freeport: Need High quality ores dropped only by goblins. (Knarmon notes showing up at vendors in Halas a lot, likely from permafrost goblins. Use race specific forge in west freefort by human only. Need plate mold, sea temper, smithy hammer, leather backing, and chain jointing, and 1-3 folded sheets. You must work HQ ores yourself. (Knarmon adds, likely: 3 HQ bricks ore and water into HQ block of ore (MQ blocks used for fine plate armor do not need smithy hammer, and not mentioned by Ikthar here to work the ore), add water, smithy hammer, to the HQ block of ore to get your HQ folded sheet of metal. (Knarmon: elsewhere is stated that all HQ ores and sheets must be made in either royal qeynos forge in qeynos, or Freeport forge in West Freeport) Ikthar adds: 1 sheet for visor, gorget, bracers, 2 sheets for helm, pauldrom, girdles, vambraces, gauntlets, boots, and 3 sheets for bp, greaves, and cloaks.

SEAFARER RING/SEA ARMOR RINGMAIL:
One of the vendors on the isle with Zachariah Reigh (first stop in the Ocean of Tears when coming from Butcherblock) sells a scroll with the info on Seafarer's Ringmail, very brief as usual. .Vagan of Vallon Zek 192 Blacksmithing made seafarer's armor: imbued peridots (Bristlebane) and plains pebbles (Karana) do not work.

Comes in sizes, set by leather armor used I suspect rather than pattenn. I would suggest sticking to medium leather armor which will be unlabed as to size. Only small and large are labeled as such. I am guessing this based on classes that can use it. It is a bit pricey to do a lot of experimentation, and the listed customer base is impressive. (Size does not affect weight?)

enchanting brellium
# Nov 01 2000 at 2:47 PM Rating: Default
hello, and thanks for all the wonderfull avice so far!! specially to Knarmon keep up the good work!!

I have one final question, one to which i am fearing the answer. How does one go about enchanting brellium ore to make the imbued dwarven armor? I would like specific recipes and where i can find all applicable materials please.
I will be adding knowledge to this post in the future as I talk to fellow smiths in the game.

The first thing is I don't think it's such a good idea to try to forge brellium before 175. The reason is the components are kinda rare (temper) and you don't want to have too many failures. now enchanting brellium requires jacinths, check out Knarmon's guide. Which means 4 / 7 / 10 jacinths per piece depending on which. That's a lot... I may be 56 and going to Hate every week but all I got so far is 2 or 3 jacinths... So I'm still working on my fine plate in the mean time -- skill 182 now :)

thanks kug, my skillis 175 now :) and i am very intereested in continuing my progress. how much are jacinths going for? and how do you use the jacinth? to enchant each piece of ore? is it a chanter spell? I know about everything but the enchanting brellium part. any more info would be greatly appreciated :)

Yeah you need to have the metal enchanted. The problem is you can't buy jacinths, they drop in various high level zones (planes, maybe some kunark dungeons) and people don't sell them (they're used for some nice jewlry items).

I belive it is an enchanter spell - the Jacinth's are about 1k pp from what I have seen them being sold

again thanks for the info :)
unfortunately it seems verant has put a considerable hurdle in front of any smith under level 50 :(

i hope to be able to get lucky and buy jacinths at 500pp or so, other than that..... i guess my time should have been spent mindlessly leveling rather than attempting to garner information about this new smithing.... very dissappointing.

Exactly my feelings as a high elf smith...

"Wow, these new recipes rock! Smithing rocks!"

"Hmm... what's this gem I need... it drops from what? Oh well, how much would it cost me? What???"

My reaction to virtually all the race specific recipies... except...don't retreat to banded, the fine plate is a nice money maker, very nice, hold firm to a minimum price of 10pp /ac higher for 3 sheet items. It does sell nicely. Make sure your smith skill is 175 though, the failures will kill you.
Prices for tempers etc...

Can someone give me an idea of what people are paying for temper / dye materials. Since the update I have been paying generally:-
5-15 pp for dyes (because I dont use them much)
15 pp for swirling mist
25 pp for essence of moonlight
1-5 pp for other bits.. just incase I could help someone else out later.
Last night I was accused of ripping people off for not offering 100-150 pp for essence of moonlight. Which is funny as I have had to explain to most people what it is for, and half the people previous to me coming along were selling to merchants for 1pp.
So what are your thoughts on buying prices???

I have also been told 750-1000 is normal price for a blue diamond(needed for enchant mithril).. This all seems a bit extreme to me. Is smithing now just for high levels, twinks and guild supplied smiths?
RE: Prices for tempers etc...
# Nov 01 2000 at 2:57 PM Rating: Default
thats insane, ive been flat given essence of moonight, i would prob pay up to a few pp but no more.. ill just take a few guildies down and farm the whole zone if people cant be reasonable.

As for the blue diamonds .. they arent a jewelry component and the armor they yeild is barely better than Bloodstained, they sell to vendor for about 200pp, so 250 is prob fair and ive seen em going for lower on SolRo. if they are higher than that, just let the casters that want it so bad buy it and bring it too ya, they will have been the ones to inflate the value in the first place.

and yes to your last question .. Verant made the components so rediculous for mediocre armor that it only fits into the powergamer budget.

I dont care, dont need the stuff but will make it on demand for rediculous fees once my skill gets a little higher.

Players will ask for as much as they can get, and it is their only way to discover what the market bears.

People who resort to name calling are generally ignorant in the extreme. They have no understanding.

You need to figure what you can sell the armor for, after failurres, the max you can pay for components and stick to that.

Ignore the outrageous demands. Just ignor them. I am polite and simply say, If you can find a buyer at that price you need to go for it, thank you and goodbye.

People do deserve a fair price, and I am pondering just what that is. My guildmates are giving me the stuff free, and refusing payment! I am stockpiling it till I have skill to use it.

Invariably, when people have called me a thief, if I persist in discussion, they are totally clueless as to what is going on, and engaging in major wishful thinking. My prices are always fair, and i know exactly why I charge what I do, and what I pay.

For components, I just say, this is what I pay, and if They want more, I wish them well. A good supplier, say for silk that I tailor with, I will give bonuses to in gratitude, but someone that quibles over price for a couple of pieces, I don't need them, and ignore them even even when they repent. It isn't worth my time to find them, only to go through the same haggle and inuendos over again, which happens all to rare. Honorable people I tip. People that hassle me I have lower and lower tolerance for, though I never burn bridges, I back out politely, wishing them well, and put them on ignore.

Do you know what a fair price to charge for Fine Plate is? I just started making the stuff and don't really have any guidelines. It appears to be worth between 10 and 20 pp per a.c., varying wildly from piece to piece. I wish I had a clearer idea of what the market generally demands.

I've sold about 3 sets of fine plate so far. 1 sheet items for about 1pp per ac, 2 sheet items for about 120pp, and 3 sheet items for 200 to 350pp which is higher than 10pp/ac People with money are grateful, and never complain. Some without come back later glad to pay these prices. The cost, and travel involved, along with skill level required make these more than a fair price. You at least double your money on successes, and more than covers your failures (about 10-20%). Sell less than this, and you are risking bankrupcy, and lots of time wasted traveling for no reward. Personaly as a barbarian warrior, I'm in mostly crafted, it sure was nice to fill the holes in my crafted items with fine plate over the banded, which for me were neck, face, shoulders, belt. I suspect there is a big market for these items amongst warriors and these are the high success pieces for skill level 175 (when you start making fine plate.

I disagree strenuously with putting a 5pp price on something that you get one or two per hour hunting. In an hour of adventuring given a choice between hunting greens for 2 components per hour vs hunting coin for 300pp per hour and then buying 6 for 50pp each, I will take the 6.

This is one reason why I pay 75pp per iksar blood and can be pushed higher and why I wont sell other race components for 5pp(I would trade them for iksar blood though, or sell for a reasonable amount).

camping for rare components

I think camping specifically for rare drops with poor market value is a waste of time. If they come your way in the course of camping for other reasons, then you get what you can, realizing the realiaties your market faces. A tradesman is a fool to pay more for a component than the finished item can sell for. That is the reality you are against, and the reality that the smith is against.

There are always the rare players that for peculiar reasons (eagerness to smith a particular item to gain knowledge of its stats, an eager customer, or downright ignorance, extreme wealth) in which they will pay very high prices, but as a camper for rare components, do not count on finding these folks too often. I think most smiths are just not going to make the race specific armor, unless friends give them the components. It just isn't worth it, flat out.

Kbarr-

I have hunted the Wood Elf Rangers in Lesser Faydark for blood. At your level they should be cake, especially with the level 52 SK Pet handy. Unfortunately, I only had 2 elf blood drops after killing wood elves for about 2 hours straight, and by that point I was so depressed I had to go kill a few dwarves >:(

I have made a lot of large and med fine plate armor, so today I went to Kaladim to make some small armor too. Went to the everhot forge, bought the molds (small plate xxx), put everything in the forge nearby, hit combine... says i put the wrong ingredients. buy a new hammer, try again... same answer. I'm not trying again until i figure out what's wrong. I put as usual mold + leather padding + water + smithy hammer + 1 2 or 3 med q folded sheets, what's wrong with that?

WEAPONS:
Indigo Sabre: (trivial <154) folded sheet of adamantite, a curved blade mold, a hilt mold, a pommel mold, and a bottle of neriak nectar. 1HS Sword damage 7 delay 24, all races. Sinuuyanea Nocturne, Heretic, Quellious writes: (smithing skill 157) made an Indigo Sabre (non-imbued). It was trivial. (a bug involving swapping of nector and water has been fixed) This item is not lore, not no drop, and not magical.
Imbued Indigo Sabre (of Innoruuk): 1 Folded Sheet of Adamantite, 1 Pommel Mold, 1 Hilt Mold, 1 Curved Blade Mold, 1 Shadow Temper, 1 Imbrued Sapphire. Valiir Xh'ree Smith skill 175 reports success with this recipe. (do not use Neriak Nectar) 1HS, Damage 7, delay 24, str 3, intell 3, wt 5, Magic Innoruuk. classes: war, shm, rog. Races: hum, def, hef, troll. Valir writes: NPC gave the following info: 1) need to have a Sapphire Imbrued by a Cleric of Innoruuk to make it magical. Valir says this costs a Blue Diamond to cast in addition to the Sapphire, but is not sure.

SHIELDS:
Tier'Dal Dragoon Shield = Kite Shield Mold + 2 Sheet of Adamantite + Teir'Dal Smithy Hammer + Shadow Temper (best report as of 10/6/00) Tier'Dal Dragoon Shield: AC 11, +2 sta. Wt. 10. Classes: C, Ro, Sk, Wr. Races: Def, Hef. Made by Dark Elves through the blacksmithing skill.
Valius Soulkeep reports: None of following recipes actually worked. Using the Teir'Dal forge, I tried a small kite shield mold and a regular kite shield mold. I attempted it with neriak nectar, shadow temper, water and all combinations of them, along with a sheet of adamantite, teir 'dal smithing hammer (attempted both with and without) and both with and without an imbued sapphire. Every combination attempted resulted “these items do not combine in this forge”, meaning the recipe is either broken, or all these are wrong. Note, shadow temper is made with 1 elven blood, 2 essence of shadows AND a neriak nectar.
(knarmon: only combo not tried seems to be 2 sheets of adamantite that some other races use, the following seems to confirm this) Valiir Xh’ree, Veeshan reorts: 'Hail' the vendor in the weapons or armor shop. This NPC says recipe is: a regular kite shield mold, 2 Adamantite Sheets (Not Folded), and all the other normal junk for Adam-smithing

recipe for Hi Elf Wizard Armor?plz post
# Oct 30 2000 at 12:24 PM Rating: Default
I know this is asking for a lot.. but.. does anyone know EXACTLY what it takes to make the Hi Elf Racial ENCHANTED armor that can be worn by wizards?
Saw a picture of a Wizard in Chain on Graffe's Wizard site.. it wasn't enchanted though.
The wearer was going to try to find the recipe (down to the last detail) on how to enchant it.
If there is any complete.. or close to it... info that you folks might have I would sure appreciate it if you could either post it here or, better yet, email it to me...
Thank you very very much,

Same as normal mithril chain, just have all the metal enchanted first. Costs a lot (current diamond costs are running at up to 1K each!!) and it fails a lot more.

ORES AND COMPONENTS NEEDED TO MAKE ELVEN RACE SPECIFIC ITEMS:
Moonlight Temper: Probable recipe: Morning dew, vials of swirling mists, 2 essence of moonlight combined in brew barrel by brewer of skill >135 or you lose the very difficult to find components. Mistressa Dominatria implies this is correct recipe.

(bad recipe: Morning Dew (foraged in Lesser Feydark), swirling mists of dusk (air elementals), 2 essence of shadows, combine in brew barrel. On a bulletin board it is posted: “I tried one Morning Dew, one Swirling Mist, 2 Essences of Shadow, and it didn't work.” He wonders if essence of moonlight needed (but has never seen it dropped anywhere.)

One player comments: The Vial of Mists, should be the next step on the Enchanter's Clarify Mana series. Not sure if this has anything to do with Moonlight temper.

Essence of Moonlight: drops off Vampires in Mistmoore. It will NOT drop off the Dark Elf forms. I have managed to get 6 of these so far Mistressa Dominatria reports.
Morning Dew: buy from the foraging classes in Greater Faydark and Lower Faydark.
Vial of mists: enchanter clarify mana series? Drop from steam elemental in steamfont, mist elementals in Najena. Mistressa Dominatria reports.
Swirling mist: enchanter clarify mana series?
Essence of shadows: dropped by shadowed men
Elven Smithing Hammer: 18.5pp Felwithe 120, -420 Tanalin Silverkale Mithril Ore and Chainmail Pattern Vendor
Small brick of mithril: 6.2pp from Tanalin, mithril ore and chainmail pattern vendor in Felwith, 120, -420
Large brick of Mithril: 18.6pp Felwithe 120, -420 Tanalin Silverkale Mithril Ore and Chainmail Pattern Vendor
Large brick enchanted Mithril:
Block of Mithril: Large brick of mithril, morning dew. Cost to make 56pp
Mithril Sheet: 12.3pp Felwithe 120, -420 Tanalin Silverkale Mithril Ore and Chainmail Pattern Vendor
Folded sheet of Mithril: block of mithril ore, morning dew, Elven smithy hammer. Cost to make 66pp
Mithril ring: morning dew, large brick of mithril, file. Cost to make 6.3pp (confirmed by Seagull, small brick is error)
Mithril chain jointing: mithril ring, file, elven smithy hammer, morning dew, cost to make 6.5pp (confirmed by Seagull)
Enchanted Mithril ring: Morning dew (foraged), Small brick of Mithril 7pp, File 2g. Cost to make 7pp (suspect correct recipe is large brick enchanted Mithril.) (see Seagull’s notes on enchanting immediately below)

Note on enchanting Mithril: The recipe above does not specify enchanted Mithril, but that may be assumed. the spell enchant mithril (level 49) calls for a blue diamond per blockof mithril or sheet of mithril. Sebilis, and plane of hate is reported zones it is dropped in. You can buy blue diamond in FV for about 210pp. The diamond is consumed when it is enchanted. If recipe is bad, may want to compare to specific notes on enchanted Berrylium armor (SEE DWARF SECTION) which has been verified. May need large brick of enchanted mithril if pattern followed. Seagull is using emeralds to embue the mithril.

Seagull is systematically exploring how to enhance high elf armor, here are comments he has written:
I tried imbued emeralds because there is no NPC recipe for magic mithril plate, although I am sure this is possible. I am also guessing that enchant mithril (200pp a cast -level 49) goes on each brick for each ring, although I have yet to try.
As there is an enchanted mithril recipe I doubt there is an imbued version although maybe there is an imbued & enchanted version.

no one has posted info... There are several forges that appear, and the actually patch shows up later, sometimes unannounced... so when you least expect it...

check the vendors after every patch if you want to be first on the block. Remember it will take 175 or close skill to successfully make anything on the new forges.

high strength for success, high intell OR wisdom for skilling up, high charisma to buy supplies at decent prices and sell results back to vendors close to cost when skilling up. A character based in freeport, the only city where smithing supplies are not scattered across vast distances, a character that is not agnostic, so you can make imbured stuff. A character that can gate and bind themselves, a character that can enchant (but you will have to develop that charater to level 30 to 54 to really be useful for that. A character that can sow themselves, a character that can do alchemy or poison skill. (shaman or rogue)

There aint no character race class that can do all that.
My chosen character race/class for my blacksmith
# Nov 01 2000 at 10:27 AM Rating: Default
I chose my class and race for the following reason: High strength, high dexterity, high wisdom, high charisma, imbue ivory, sow, bind, gate, alchemy, access to good races. This led to the choice of a Barbian Shaman for my blacksmith. At level 14 and good high end jewelry and a Cracked Darkwood shield, I have a strength of 196 and a wisdom of 113. This is not great now but as this character get into higher levels, strength will never be an issue. The only thing I suggest is wisdom jewelry and always boost your dexterity to decrease failures. At level 9 I attempted to make 4 small plate bracers with strength at 184 and I failed at all four attempts. As I found out, small plate is more difficult to make then medium so I waited until level 14 when I was able to use a new spell that not only increased strength but increased dexterity as well. I always cast dexterity now and I have not had but two failures in the process of making about 15 pieces of fine plate. This character is not the best smith now but will become an awesome one with the passing of time.

Here is how I've put data together so far. Anyone spot errors?

NORTHMAN IMBUED RINGMAIL/CHAINMAIL ARMOR. Also known as MCMANNUS CLAN IMBUED NORTHMAN RINGMAIL
Sources of info: www.eqmaps.com/itemssheet, also Uniongreystorm
For imbued ringmail AC is 2 greater than banded, and str +1, wis +2, cold resist +2 are same for every item of armor (at least for tribunal worshipers). Uniongreystorm’s success rate at skill level 180 is about 90% I suspect from his comments, based on at least several complete sets made. Recipe is same as for non imbued except frost temper is added. Non verified means recipe is deduced from other recipies. Imbued ivory can be used only by tribunal worshipers. The tribunal Classes: WAR BRD ROG SHM Races: HUM BAR HEF. Imbued jade can only be used by Rallos Zek worshipers.

Costs of components:
smithy hammer reusable
frost temper vendors have been seen selling for 31pp, otherwise cost is 81c for brandy, and camping time.
Chain mail patterns: 0.6 to 10pp
Leather armor: 1.3 to 3.4pp
Imbued ivory: vendor sells for 9pp when they have been sold it, otherwise cost is time camping ivory and payment of shaman
Or Imbued jade: see for ivory
Medium quality rings: when players have sold to them, vendors sell for 6.1pp, when forged costs 2pp. 1 to 3 needed.

In list below total cost to make uses 9pp for imbued ivory, 31pp for frost temper, and 6pp for rings, so actual costs may be 44pp less than calculated if you camp for these, and forge the rings (unlikely you will buy many rings). I use these numbers as a ROUGH assignment of time value of camping. If you come by these components in course of hunting otherwise, total costs to make this armor are actually somewhat trivial, and they sell for several hundred pp. Time and demand are factors that drive up prices.

1 mq ring items:
Visor: smithy hammer, frost temper (31pp), large chain visor pattern (2p), large leather visor (1.3p), imbued ivory (9p), or jade, 1 medium quality ring (6p). Non verified. AC 6, str +1, wis +2, cold resist +2. Total cost to make 50pp.
Collar: smithy hammer, frost temper, large chain collar pattern (0.6p), large leather collar (1.6p), imbued ivory or jade, 1 medium quality rings. Non verified. AC 7, str +1, wis +2, cold resist +2, total cost to make 48pp.
Bracer: smithy hammer, frost temper, large chain bracer pattern (2.5p), large leather bracer (1.6p), imbued ivory or jade, 1 medium quality rings. Non verified. AC 8, str +1, wis +2, cold resist +2, total cost to make 50pp.

2 mq ring items:
helm: smithy hammer, frost temper, large chain helm pattern (5p), large leather helm (2.1p), imbued ivory or jade, 2 medium quality rings. Non verified. AC 10, str +1, wis +2, cold resist +2. total cost to make 59pp.
pauldron (shoulder): smithy hammer, frost temper, large chain pauldron pattern (8.1p), large leather shoulders (2.3p), imbued ivory or jade, 2 medium quality rings. Non verified. AC 8, str +1, wis +2, cold resist +2. Total cost to make 64pp.
girdles (belt): smithy hammer, frost temper, large chain skirt pattern (2.5p), large leather belt (1.8p), imbued ivory or jade, 2 medium quality rings. AC 8, str +1, wis +2, cold resist +2, wt 3.5, sells for 500pp. total cost to make 57pp.
vambrace (sleeves): smithy hammer, frost temper, large chain sleeve pattern (5p) , large leather sleeves (2p), imbued ivory or jade, 2 medium quality rings. AC 9, str +1, wis +2, cold resist +2, wt 5.0. Total cost to make 57pp.
gauntlets: smithy hammer, frost temper, large chain glove pattern (8.8p), large leather gloves (2.3p), imbued ivory or jade, 2 medium quality rings. Non verified. AC 9, str +1, wis +2, cold resist +2. total cost to make 63pp.
Boots: smithy hammer, frost temper, large chain boots pattern (8.8p), large leather boots (3p?), imbued ivory or jade, 2 medium quality rings. AC 8, str +1, wis +2, cold resist +2, wt 4.0. total cost to make 64pp.

3 mq ring items:
mail (chest): smithy hammer, frost temper, large chain mail pattern (10p), large leather tunic (3.4p), imbued ivory or jade, 3 medium quality rings. AC 17, str +1, wis +2, cold resist +2, wt 8.5. total cost to make 72pp.
Splinted cloak: smithy hammer, frost temper, large chain splinted cloak pattern (5p), large leather cloak (2.3p), imbued ivory or jade, 3 medium quality rings. AC 9, str +1, wis +2, cold resist +2, wt 5.0 shaman in particular will want northman imbued cloaks. Total cost to make 65pp. Sell for 275pp.
greeves (legs): smithy hammer, frost temper, large chain greeves pattern (9p), large leather legs (3p), imbued ivory or jade, 3 medium quality rings. str +1, wis +2, cold resist +2 total cost to make 70pp.

Question: Which Gem for which Diety
# Oct 28 2000 at 11:28 PM Rating: Default
Been searching through this board, and I've found only a few of them. If anyone has these down, I'd like to know, what gem goes with what diety as far as imbued armor.

Also another question, is it possible to have brellium or any race specific armor, with a different imbued gem. For instance, could you make a piece of imbued brellium with the gem of Rallos Zek? I haven't seen that posted so was not for sure as i'm not quite to that smithing level, Thanks

when you create a character, note for a given race/class combination, there are very limited diety choices. Never start trials of imbueing stuff, unless you have a specific customer. Here is the data that has published so far on this board. In general if you are doing race specific forging spend some serious time on the web. A lot of data is there.

Imbued items:
These are for race specific smithing recipes. The components are made with level 34 Halas Shaman spell, or level 28 Cabilis shaman spell, or level 28 cleric spell from West Freeport Temple of Marr. In Barbarian specific armor, there is imbued ivory and imbued jade that is part of recipes. Components and sources for these high level spell (shaman levl 28-34 depending on race) made items unknown. Other racially specific armor had imbued components also, amber, titanium etc.
Logged Thunndaar writes: There are LOTS OF IMBUE SPELLS. Check with your local cleric. Imbued is deity specific.
Imbued stones, and diety: Ivory - The Tribunal (verified) (vendors buy for 6pp, vendors sell for 8.75pp, stacks, wt 0.1), Jade - Rallos Zek, Amber - Cazic Thule, Sapphire – Innoruuk Plains Pebble (foraged) – Karana, a diamond 211pp - Mithanial Marr. Bertoxxulous - black sapphire, 105pp. Bristlebane - peridot, 10.5pp. There is one likely one stone per diety. Clerics and Rangers only wear the imbued. Imbued armor is diety restricted. If agnostic, no beliefs, no armor.
Jyro Popalokus writes that each gem is deity specific, and anything made with a gem will only be usable by followers of that deity. There are, a number of cultural armors and weapons that only use stuff enchanted by Enchanters (no imbued gems) and are therefore not deity specific. Dwarven armor, for instance, comes in enchanted and imbued enchanted. (Made without or with a gem. The imbued enchanted is more difficult according to Yakatizma.

In two months of watching this board, this is all I have. Enchant steel is apparently a level 54 enchanter spell.

I suspect few have attempted because finding an enchanter of that level and the jacinth are formidable barriers. Plus you will have to carry around a stash of mq large bricks (wt 14) and the jacinths while searching, an inventory and weight issue of major proportions.

NOTES OF POSSIBILITY OF ENCHANTING FINE PLATE/STEEL ARMOR
Enchanted fine plate: theoretically this should be possible. There is an enchant steel spell, and should add enhancements to armor if race specific trials are a guide.

Enchanting Steel: Alderon Brell server writes: An enchanter can cast enchant steel on a brick of HQ ore, giving an enchanted brick of HQ ore. Each spell takes a jacinth, a rare drop gem, that apparently vendors sell for about 1pp (when one has been sold to them) Fine plate will take medium quality large bricks, wt 14, lots of them (3 for each folded sheet)No mention if enchant steel enchants all ores or select ores.

Jacinth: Jacinth is a rare gem, drop from high-level mobs 45+, Dino in OoT or Hate / Fear planes. The gem is consumed when the enchantment spell is cast.

I am a Iksar Master Blacksmith (152). I have a couple of questions. I just got my lvl 29 shaman spells, and what armor can i make with that Imbur Amber spell?. I dont know it that is the Enchanted Iksar or what. Is there a website that I can go to to find the skill lvls and componets needed to make the special armor. Please help. I need to Suit up my fellow Iksars for War.!.

Here are my accumulated notes.

IKSAR
The following recipes must be combined by a Iksar in the Cabilis Forge: E. Cabilis, upstairs in Warrior Guild.
Scale Temper: 1 froglok blood, 1 iksar blood, 1 sarnak blood, bloodwater, combine in brew barrel.
Blood: Iksar blood is very rare drop, dropped by named Iksar npc’s. Iksar Footpad, Iksar Bandit, Iksar Brigand, Iksar Manslayer, Iksar Marauder, Iksar Exile, and Iksar Pariah. All exist in Lake of Ill Omen. Jyro Popalokus writes: Froglok blood is fairly common in the Guks, sarnak blood kin be found on most mid to high level sarnaks, and bloodwater is bought in several places in Cabilis. The Iksar Blood, however, is the rare one - it is a rare drop on 30th+ level iksar mobs and uncommon drop on 45th+ level iksar mobs. They are dropped rarely on Coerced Iksar types in Dalnir's Crypt, and more commonly on Iksar necromancers in Sebilis.
Boodwater: 12c “many locations”?? Buy in Cabilis is only location mentioned by name.

Imbued Amber, Jade:
Imbued items general comments:
Imbued stones, and diety: Ivory - The Tribunal (verified) (vendors buy for 6pp), Jade - Rallos Zek, Amber - Cazic Thule, Sapphire – Innoruuk Plains Pebble (foraged) – Karana, a diamond 211pp - Mithanial Marr. Bertoxxulous - black sapphire, 105pp. Bristlebane - peridot, 10.5pp. There is one likely one stone per diety. Clerics and Rangers only wear the imbued. Imbued armor is diety restricted. If agnostic, no beliefs, no armor.

Success rates: one player reports: With a skill of 149-150, wisdom of about 137, str of 92, I have successfully forged all pieces of regular Iksar skyiron armor. My first attempts were at skill level 143-145 and I successfully forged everything but tunic and legs. As fails seem to be rare, or I've been VERY lucky, any Iksar smith should have moderate success with skyiron armor at level 150.

All non magical items are not tracked and therefore not returnable if lost.

This I found after somehow the game decided to make all the items previously in my pack dissappear apart from the one that I had put in the day before. All the items were stacks of dyes or dye ingrediants or mercury.

After 4 days of talking to guides I find the GM who is only available to me after midnight my time.. (taken me a while to even get this info).. He questions me for the 4th or 5th time.. and then tells me that dyes arent magical so thats that.. try and be understanding thank you very much.. I then get warned for saying Verant sucks 4 times..(took 5 seconds for guide to tell gm - can you see something wrong in this picture) spamming apparently.. I personal called it venting for the many hours dye hunting wasted and then more time wasted trying to get to a GM to be told "sorry nothing I can do either"

Lesson.. dont put all your dyes in one basket! (erm.. pack really) and check for guides before saying verant sucks..

I think that sucks...sorry to hear it happened to you...I think that there needs to be a better policy on these kinds of problems...make me angry that they (verant) have no reasonable solution for these kinds of problems, kinda like getting killed on a boat, corpse unlootable, falls in ocean at zone and you are on your own...BS!!! Verant does suck and you have full right to say so by my book...good luck to you :) sorry that happened to you.

But Sir Seagull...they DO suck. (some do anyway) And what do they mean that non-magical items aren't trackable? GMs arent as (high and)mighty as they act? That is, they don't know what's going on at all times?

Sir? - I prefer Mr. if your going to be formal.

Non trackable - I would assume means they dont bother to set the systems to record the information for future use or it is set to only be able to look back at certain items. (I personally do not know the systems..) If the game loses it somehow then it is gone! no longer there! not replaceable!

Mighty? - GMs I would assume have limits set by the company policy and the tools they work with.

Knowledge - as GMs are the only ones that can return items lost and are somewhat tricky to get hold of (unless you annoy one). One would assume that the simple facts could be allowed to be passed on by guides.... For instance:- Its not magical your not getting it back - go stick your head in a bucket of temper until cooled, then enjoy yourself the rest of the week instead of waiting pathetically thinking you have a hope of in hell of getting something back. btw Have a nice day.

Or are you suggesting the GM did not know what he was talking about and you have information to the contrary. Or just a little friendly sarcasm.

Even if it's magical you may not get it back. I was in Qeynos bank fully load down and no Slots open(Due to just buying armor). I by chance was moving my Shiny Brass Halberd from one location to the Other and hit the Banker by Mistake. (Braas Halberd was in ready hand) So I canceled the trade and never saw my Halberd again. I got a GM and he said that I dropped it 6 days ago and he couldn't return it. I explain what happen and they showed no record for that transaction. This happen before the /Report command. I had a Screen shot of the Transaction, but was told it could be altered. So I did the Transaction again (with GM watching) and it happen again I lost another weapon. I got it back but they could not see it on there side of the Screen (Or whatever). They still wouldn't return my Halberd even though we recreated the Problem. As of this weekend I did it again with a Rusty Dagger and lost it. So that problem never got fixed. (See if you can repeat the Error)

All Slots in your Inventory are full.
Stand in the bank in front of the counter.
Take a Crappy weapon from your hand and trade it to the banker and cancel.
(It should say dropped to the ground due to being full)
Now see if you can find it, (your Dropped Crappy weapon)
In Qeynos bank it vanishs in to thin air.... No record entry made for Magic or Normal weapons)

more important, how can I prevent this?

Could you figure out why they disappeared? Was it a weight reducing pack, that you logged out with, or went link dead on? Weight reducing pouches terrify me for this reason, and I never use them. The only things that weigh enough to warrent using them, are very costly.

I know there are some that are dangerous and others that are not. I had a list at one time... sigh.

No I was not using a weight reducing pack, it was a standard 10 slot. I learnt the errors of using summoned weight reducers early on in making fine plate.

Yes I think I did go linkdead at one point in the bank.

Hopefully it was a freak error and will not happen to you (or me again), because I can see no reason why a pack (only taken out for a few moments and then put back into vault) should empty itself of everything but the last item put in. If the game thought I had given the pack away or dropped it then I would have no pack. And it obviously had all the items in the pack together at one point in time or the charcoal would not have been in the slot it was in.

Therefore I can not offer you answers to it not happening. All I can think of is that if I had had a magic item in the pack the GM may have found the problem, verified my story and been inclined to be more generous. (a BIG maybe!)

If I felt it was something I had done I would have just screamed and then said "such is life".

You think I may have offered it to the banker and he took all the old stuff inside my pack and left the pack and one new item (?). Well he didnt, not while I was online as least. At the end of my transactions I quit the bank and had all my stuff and backpack full of stuff in bank. Was about to leave, but went back to bank to check coins and lsced there.

Nice bug warning but I dont think that was it.

There is a progression. At level 115 you can make simple things like bracers, gorgets to make a profit. Here is my experience.

Success rates at skill level 102:
Gorgets and Bracers 90%
Boots 30%
Everything else, forget it.

Success rates at skill level 115-119
Gorgets and Bracers near 100%
Helm 5/6=90%
Belts 5/5=100%
Mask 5/7=70%
Boots 6/12=50%
Sleeves 8/15=50%
Mantels 1/5=20%.
Everything else (legs, cloaks, tunics, gloves) forget it.

Success Rates at skill level 125.
Boots 5/5=100%
Bracers 4/5=80% (Danni’s experience)
Mantels 4/4=100%
Helms 4/5=90% (Danni’s experience)
Mask 3/4=75%
Tunics (chest) 6/9=66%
Sleeves 3/5=60% (Danni’s experience)
Leggings 2/8=20% (my experience) 4/5=80% (Danni’s experience)
Cloaks (back) 0/4=0%
I suggest avoiding cloaks, leggings, gauntlets at this level.

Success Rates at skill level 129
Tunics 4/5 80%
Cloaks 3/5 60% (at skill level 130 had 0/5) (at skill level 131 Cloaks 2/3 66%)
Leggings 1/6 17% (at skill level 131 3/4=75%
I suggest avoiding leggings, gauntlets, perhaps cloaks

Success rates at skill level 136 You can reliably make everthing at tolerable failure rates.
Cloaks 5/6 83%
Leggings 5/6 83%
Success rates at skill level 141:
All items have sporadic failure, sometimes as many as 4 failures in a row, but highly unusual.

Skill level 145 Still 10% failures with cloaks, mantels, legs but everthing else failures are less than 5%.

Skill level 160: Still about 10% failure with legs, mantels, and getting several failures in a row on gauntlets on occasion.

Skill level 175: still fails 10% with cloaks.
Learning Smithing After Trade Skill Update
# Oct 26 2000 at 1:41 PM Rating: Default
Larien's Recommendation (http://www.eqtraders.com/learn/smithing.html) for the least expensive development of smithing was as follows:
Train to 21; Sharpen to 31; Scalars to 41; Lanterns to 68; Skewers to 115; Pots to 122; Small Sewing Kits to 135; Banded Armor after 135.

After update, I found following changes useful: Substitute field point arrows for scalars, as they are saleable to players who fletch, from 32 to 41; create studs if anyone wants them, a real pain (file, 3 metal bits, water) but they do stack and tailors need them to progress, to about 46; create toolboxes to 51 (1 bit, 1 water, but container doesnt stack or nest); Sheet metal is very expensive, and at 47 I only made 1 sheet with about 5 plat worth of materials (2 small bricks, 1 water).

I am at skill 51, and wanted to see if anyone had advice on any changes between average and mastery of skill (51 to 101). Otherwise I will probably stick with lanterns, skewers, pots, and sewing kits.) Out of new stuff, forged throwing knife (62), javelin (82), and shuriken (82, 10 per success), looked interesting as only three components required: Mold, Sheet Metal, Water. Expense and failures with sheet metal, however, make me question this route.

All your choices in skilling up

Here are detailed notes on all choices you have, and cost data, difficulty, marketability factors vs selling back to vendors, so you can decide best route for you and your circumstances. Many choices, there is no one best route. Enjoy. Most of trivials here post 9/00 patch. Much thanks to this bulletin board on providing new trivials, and considerations that I had overlooked. It is organized so that within a series 2A - 2C you read the info, and pick what fits you. When you complete that look at the series 3A-3D list of choices and so forth.

1. Skill Level 0-10 Practice points each time you level. 20 points is the maximum you can put into here, and you may want to do that.

2A. Skill level 10-21 Metal bits: Two small pieces of ore, one water (non conjured) combined in a regular forge. Be sure not to stack, put the three items in 3 separate slots in the forge. Do not use summoned or foraged water, it will not work. In Halas the vender outside of McDaniels right near the forge has water, also the Fire Cider Tavern. Nnet cost to skill up with metal bits is 3.5pp, less travel than sharpening stones in spite of high failure rate. You will have about 25 metal bits for future use.) Save these for future use. With failure (lack skill) you lose about 140c per attempt 3/4 the time with no product to show for it. Sinudar reports: 7 stacks of ore raised his skill level from 10 to 21 when bits went trivial. 27 successes out of 70 attempts. His cost to skill up 5.2pp which translates into a cost of 400c per metal bit, actually not bad considering you will be using these.

If you buy the weapons to sharpen and resell this represents about 1.5pp cost, and you have nothing to show for it. A master smith can make 27 metal bits for 2pp, so you save about 2pp in cost to make bits later on. Ore available in Erudin and High Hold Keep.

2B: Skill level 10-21 FILE: 1 metal bit (200c at 70%), 1 file mold (13c), one flask water (13c) (your cost to make 226c) Skill level 10, 50 % success rate. At skill level 22 60-75 % success rate. Files are a reusable tool to make studds and steel boning. Venders buy them for 77 - 80c. You lose 173c with each file if you are 100% successful in making them. Venders sell files for 129c. Assuming 10 combines per skill level, 110 combines to go 10-21, 60% success overall (all conjectures), cost to skill from 10 to 21 is 20pp.

2C. Skill level 10-32 Sharpen weapons with sharpening stones (stone plus rusty sharp edged weapon in regular forge, sharpen cheap weapons then more expensive ones. You can save weapons from fishing and hunting, or buy them from vendors, selling all products bact to vendors. You get a tarnished weapon with success. You get rusty weapon back (labeled as “alternative product” with failures. You lose everything if you put a weapon in that is not sharp, like a halberd. The tarnished weapons have same damage class but are faster. Tarnished weapons do not sell for any more than rusty to vendors, but the costs are only a few copper, so that is no concern. Sharpening success depends on size (cost) of weapon. I've never taken more than 4 attempts on bigger weapons to succeed At skill level 17 some weapons still needed 3 attempts. Rough guess as to cost to skill up is about 5pp if you buy weapons and resell them back, you make money if you use weapons from skeletons or fishing. Trivial levels for specific weapons: Daggers 17, Broad and Long swords 23, ******* swords 27, 2 hand swords 32. Use this knowledge just so you can maximize effort by sharpening the low trivial weapons first. There are a dozen or so individual sharp edged rusty weapons you can sharpen, and each undoubtably has its own trivial level. It is fun to keep track of this, but not very important.

Mystk reports: 90 combines to go from skill 8 to 27. 64 attempts skill 8 to 21, 23 attempts skill 21 to 26, 3 attempts skill 26 to 27. This is with a high intelligence, high wisdom character. This is average of 5 attempts per skill level.

Stones are sold at High Hold Keep near bank, Freeport or Erudin in front of the armory. Stones stack and are only 4c each. Buy at least 200 stones. To go to Erudin, take a ship from north dock in Qeynos, the boat stops at Erud’s island (vendors there, cat people, dangerous place to hunt mid teens and lower) At Erudin you get on a small transport ship. If you miss it, and decide to swim for shore do loc’s over and over, sharks will kill you with one blow if you are unlucky. I suggest not swimming for shore. From the Erudin docks enter the marble building, go to far back, then enter the center pool. You will transport to right in front of the armory. The vendor selling ore is outside the armory just a few feet away. The zone transport to temple with bank in basement is at the top of the steps from the transport disk you are one. The transport back to the docks is up the same steps you took to transport disk to bank, but you turn to the right. There is the Erudin forge (for erudite smiths only) outside the armor. The general forge is in the enclosed courtyard outside Deepwater Knights, near the library. To get there face the armory, turn right, go up path, down stairs and keep to left. Enter Deep Water Knights, and from inside first floor, exit to courtyard.

3A: Skill level 21-46 Studs 3 bits, file, water. 3 metal bits. (prior to 9/00 trivial at 41, report since now 46) Cost 600cc to make per successful combine, which yields 2 studs. (700c at 70% success rate), file is 110c but is reusable, returned with failures and successes, unless you put wrong combination into the forge and lose it). File molds are 12c. Studs are potentially profitable if sell to players, more so at skill 41 when success rates are better. They are stackable (this is new as of 9/2000), and yield is now 2 studs per combine. Tailors need studs in large quantities if they choose studded armor to skill up. Sinudar had 5 successes with studs on 10 attempts to raise level 2 points 21 to 23, and at level 27 had a success rate of 50% taking 10 combines to raise skill 1 point.
(skilling up 21 to 27) Assume (based on pre 9/00 data from Sinudar) 60 combines, 30 successes. The combines cost 36pp, and you recover 60 studs sell to vendors at 2g each or 12pp, net cost 24pp. If you sell the studs to tailors at 1pp/stud you make 24pp profit, if 5g you lose 6pp. Since they are now stackable it is worth saving them in the bank.
(skilling up 27 to 41) assume 140 combines, 70 successes, combines cost 84pp, 140 studs sell to vendors for 28pp net cost 56pp, if you sell to players at 1pp per stud you make 56pp profit, if 5g 14pp.

3B. Skill level 27-41 make scalers: bits, scaler mold, water. Scalar mold (63c), metal bits (200c), water (13c). Cost per combine 260c. In past this gave a file and large container lid mold. Ignore this in other smithing guides. Since I mastered smithing it has been changed, so that successes give a scaler only. Molds available at Daniel’s Smokes second floor in Halas, the cottage in Qeynos Hills, and Trader’s Holiday from Islan in East Freeport. I do not know cost or success rate data with new products. Mystk reports that 110 attempts got her from skill 27 to 41. These have no market, so they must be sold at loss to vendor. For a barbarian assume 140 combines at 36pp total. Not sure of price vendor pays now. If 50% success rate you will have 70 scalers likely get about 200c for from vendor, or 14pp, net cost to skill up 27 to 41 is 22pp.

3C: Skill level 32-41 Field point arrowheads: Metal bits 200cc, water 13c, file (reusable). Yield is 20 You can sell them to fletchers, or use them yourself.

3D: Skill level 27 to 41 make Steel Boning: (not viable skilling up path due to high failure rates) Small brick ore, file, water. You can make almost 100% successfully at skill level 80. Tailors consume these in vast quantities, and most tailors will be needing 300 bonings in process of skilling up to 110 in tailoring.. Small brick ore is 600c, wt 15. You can carry only 8 at a time. Boning weighs 0.1 and do not stack. I use my erudite mule with 8 empty backpacks, load up at vendor in Erudin, gate to qeynos, then use my main character to offload one back pack at a time and crawl to forge. You need to have two accounts to do this, or have a buddy make an erudite enchanter and do this for you. Alternativly travel your smith to Erudin, and use deepwater knight forge, or go to high hold keep, and crawl from bank to forge outside Greenbanes in High Hold pass (follow left wall from Keep entrance). Easiest of all will be in freeport where forge is right outside the ore vendor. Main problem is stashing all the non stackable bonings. Suggest making a warehouse character for this, an enchanter is nice because they can gate, and have nice charisma to buy the expensive ore. At smith level 154 I made 136 with 3 failures. To skill from 27 to 41 is estimated about 170 combines, total cost 283pp minus what a vendor pays back for estimated 70 successes. Vendor buys boning for 400c you get back 28pp, or net cost 255pp. If you sell to players for 1pp per boning (will be hard to find buyer), net cost is still 213pp. Not a viable method likely if these assumptions are even roughly close.

3D: Skill level to 37 Skinning knife: use with tailor skill to lower grade of pelt one notch. Small brick of ore+Hilt Mold+Dagger blade mold+water. Trivial at 37. Due to mold availability far from qeynos and Halas, this is special order item only, not a skilling up item. I have found the possession of this essential in making leather backing for high level smith items.

4A. Skill level 42-51 make tool boxes: (one metal bit, water). (trivial of 51 verified by Borrell 10/00) A tool box is an 8 slot container with a combine button. It is used by gnomes for tinkering. You are going to have run to a vendor to sell them as you make them one to three at a time as they do not fit inside other containers. They no longer can be sold at a major profit to vendors, vendors now pay back somewhat less than cost to make. Vendor buys them back for about 80c, with a metal bit costing about 200c to make. Net cost per successful attempt is 120c. Assuming 10 combines per level, and 50% success rate you cost will be 50pp more or less to get to level 51. (I have no personally verified data on this),

4B. Skill level 42-56 Cookie cutters: bits, cookie mold, water. mold (438c), 1 Metal bits (200c), water (13c) = 651c per attempt. Net loss 488c per attempt at 40% success rate at skill level 47 if you sell to venders. If you sell to players, 1620c would be your break-even point at these rates. Cookie cutters for 2 plat to the occassional buyer by my experience. Over 2 weeks of auctioning I found 3 cooks in Freeport interested, so don’t stock up on too many of these, like one at a time. Assuming above costs and overall 40% success rate, and 10 combines per level needed, and you sell back to vendors, you will need 140 combines, at 500c per combine roughly to skill 42 to 56 or 70pp.

4C. Skill level 42-56 Metal sheets: 2 small brick of ore (650c), water. (venders sell for 1295c, and cost 1340cc to make if this recipe correct. Venders buy for 774). There is probably no market as they are readily available to people needing them at less than your cost to make. Exception, if you are in HH, halfling smiths if around may snap these up to make small banded armor. Small molds are in Misty thicket, but closest sheets of metal for them are Qeynos Hills, or Freeport. Metal sheets can be considered a quick expensive route of skilling up. The only places I know to buy sheets of metal in Norath, are in Qeynos Hills and Freeport. So if you are smithing small size banded in Rivervale you will have to make your own metal sheets buying the bricks in High Hold Keep, other wise it just isn’t feasible as you have to make multiple trips over vast distances to Qeynos or Freeport. Potentially 140 combines to go from 42 to 56 skill, so about 70pp net cost potentially if you sell these back to vendors, otherwise you have potentially 70 sheets to use later for banded, major inventory storage problem though as they do not stack.

5A. Skill level 51-58 make Lanterns: bits(200c), lantern mold (181c), bottle(8c), water) (trivial of 58 confirmed post 9/00 patch by Borrell.) lantern casting molds sold in QH at cottage and at McDaniel’s Smokes. Get bottles at a taverns. In Halas, Leopok in bank has bottles. Greta Terrian outside of McDaniels has bottles for 6c. In East Freeport bottles are on second floor of chops and hops in south west corner of zone (the lower poor district reached via an obscure passage behind Felith and Bards imported Goods. It is quite tedious making lanterns with 4 components, and continually roaming around to restock the molds and bottles. Mysk reports 172 attempts skill 41 to 64 (7.4 combines per skill level). She is a high intelligence, high wisdom player. When I made lanterns I was experimenting with many other items so I do not have data to compare for a barbarian. Assuming 70 combines for level 51 to 58 cost to skill up is 28pp minus return on 70 successses (Borrell reports no failures skill level 51 to 58) selling back for 200c or 14pp, net cost 14pp. There is no point in selling these to players. They’d make fine gifts to newbies though, these are large lanterns by the way, a nice light source and they work just like the store bought kind.

(NA means not applicable, not a skilling up item, due to difficulty in supply procurement or high net cost)
Make if customer special order.
5B: Skill level NA – 62 Forged throwing knife: water (13c), metal sheet (1300c), throwing knife mold (10c). dam 5, del 35, wt 0.5, range 45?,60?, cost 1.3p

5C: Skill level NA - 82 Javelins water, metal sheet (1.4pp), javelin mold (11c) dam 7 delay 33, range 205, cost 1.5p, vendor buys for 453c see source of molds near middle of this document. Assuming 10 combines per skill level, 220 combines cost 330pp, minus assumed 110 successes selling for 50pp or 280pp. There is no conceivable player market for this.

5D: Skill level NA - 75 Forged ******* sword: 1HS weapon, dual edged mold 1944c, hilt mold 648c, pommel mold 648c, metal sheet 1303c, water flask 13c (vender sells ******* sword for 15P damage 8) cost to make 4600c, dmg 7, delay 33, wt 6.5 sell for 9pp. cost 4pp Due to mold availability, this is special order item only, not a skilling up item. Tepxal writes: this sword is usable and desired by Druids. I think it is the only straight bladed slashing weapon they can use.

5E: Skill level NA - 75 Morning star: Trival 75 spiked ball mold 2592c, hilt mold 648c, metal sheet 1303c, water flask 13c, trivial below level 141, costs 4600c to make, 1 hand blunt weapon, dmg 8, delay 38, wt 9, sell for 9pp cost 4pp. Due to mold availability, this is special order item only, not a skilling up item.

5F: Skill level NA - 91 Forged Two Handed sword: heavy blade mold 3887c, hilt mold 648c, Pommel mold 648c, sheet of metal 1303c, water 13c, cost to make is 6600c (vender sells 2H sword for 27 plat damage 12) not trivial at 141, I had 1/2 successes at 141. Damage 12, delay 44, wt 11, sell for 15pp. cost 5pp. Due to mold availability, this is special order item only, not a skilling up item.

6A: Skill level 58-82 Forged shurikin: water, metal sheet (1.4pp), shurikin mold (11c), dam 4, delay 25, range 65, wt 0.5 cost 1.3p, yield is 10 per combine, cost 150c per shuriken, vendor buys for 91c. May be viable to skill up with as there is a player market and they stack.

6B. Skill level 58-115 make Skewers Metal Bits (200c), water (13c), mold (104c) Cost per attempt is 315c.
10 % success rate at Skill level 70. Skill level 77 success rate was about 25%, Skill level 82 success rate less than 50%, Skill level 90 success rate starts rising, Skill level 100 success rate 70-80%. Mystk reports 276 attempts to go from skill 68 to 109 with her high intelligence enchanter. Rough guess would be 50-60pp at this stage net cost, a barbarian cost is likely double on basis of more combines needed, and cost increase in components. 57 skill levels would take 570 attempts or 180pp, if overall 50% success, 286 success sell for ??2g or 57pp, net cost to skill up 133pp. If dark race no skewer molds available, use alternatives like sewing kits etc. other cooking items. There is no market for skewers except for the occassional cook

6B. Skill level 71-101 Pie tins and other cooking items: cake round and muffin tin are trivial at 101 , also need ceramic liners, that need a potter, so not very practical to use. After you are a master smith, and if you master pottery (a cheap and fast trade to master) these sell occassionally for a few pp. Other cooking items, such as muffin tins, cake rounds, smokers, bread tins, all have similar problems, and very low demand. Best to make them on request only after you are a master. Recipes further on in document. These are fairly complex and time consuming to make, and are definitely not an item to make for skilling up, but only after you are a master, specifically for resale.

7A. Skill level 115-122 make pots: bits (200c), pot mold (465c), standing leg mold (195c), water (13c) net cost about 880c, vender buys at 527c. You will sell these back to vendors. The rare cooks buys them for 2pp. Be aware that most of the cooking recipes involving pots on the web are wrong. See my baking guided for true and tried recipes. When you use wrong ingredients you lose the pot. WARN your customers. It is miserable to lose a 2pp tool to make an item worth 2 silver. Pots will skill you up faster, but banded will be break even selling to players at skill level 115, and as you approach 120 you will actually start making significant money on select items of banded armor. Net cost to skill up 70 attempts is 61pp minus assumed 35 successes returning 16pp, or about 45pp.

7B. Skill level 123-135 Make small sewing kits: needle mold, thimble mold, bits, water. Cost is about 750c and venders buy back at 440c. Again, this is fast route up, but they are a container, so you can’t even put them in back packs. This makes a 2 slot sewing kit, which is a nice give away to newbies that need to combine spiderling silks. Assuming 120 combines net cost is 90pp minues assumed 35 successes returning 15pp give net cost to skillup 75pp. Molds not available in Freeport, but are available at Inn just as you enter Northern Ro from East Freeport. I wondered if you could get a larger kit and tried with out success ("these ingredients do not combine") the following recipes: 1 needle mold, 1 thimble mold, 2 bits, 1 water, and 2 needle molds, 2 thimble molds, 2 bits, 1 water. Considering none of the books mention making larger kits is possible I ended my experimentation.

7C: Skill level 100-175: make banded armor for resale to players. Several pages further in this document are very detailed instructions, and this should be reviewed before starting. As each item becomes trivial, add next one to your list of armor you can make, and make all kinds to keep a variety on hand for resale. If you make banded too much below triviality, high failure rates occur. At the point you start making banded you can head back to your home city. Banded is in demand everywhere. Stash up on about 120 metal bits to have on hand for future endevours (cooking items, studs, boning). If you make banded on west coast you will be buying molds in either Halas area or cottage in Qeynos hills, and sheet metal at the cottage in Qeynos hills. I made 2-300 pp selling at twice my making costs, between skill level 115 and 139. You can only carry so much at a time, and you have to wander a lot of zones auctioning your wares. Also, pay attention to details below as to which items of banded you can make at a given level, you lose 3-5 plat per failed attempt. There is really not much point in pushing your skill up rapidly at this level, other than pride, or you want to make fine plate and race specific armor at 50 to 100pp per attempt, or want the ability to make ALL items of banded with high success rates.

If you use a charisma 105 character to buy and sell banded supplies, you break even within a few gold on cloaks, mantels, legs, gloves not counting failures. At skill level in 160’s cloaks fail about 10% of time, and all other items fail about 5% of the time. It takes my barbarian about 20 combines per skill level. At charisma 65 (my barbarian) you will lose1.5 to 2pp every sale back to a vendor. Because I was eager to get to skill 175 to make the new armor, at skill level 165 I began selling back to vendors, after filling up an alternative character with an inventory of legs, mantels, gloves, and cloaks and running out of excess cash. With failures it cost me about 10pp per skill level with my wisdom buffed with basic jewelry and using a charisma 105 character to do buying and selling for my barbarian smith.

If you are selling to vendors with pure goal of skilling up, stick to this sequence.
100-115 banded wrists, gorget for resale, mold, 1 sheet metal, water
115-123 banded boots: mold, 1 sheet metal, water
123-135 banded mask, helm, belt: mold, 2 sheets metal, water
135-168 banded gloves, legs: mold, 2 sheets metal, water. mantel: mold, 3 sheets metal, water
168-175 banded cloak: mold, 2 sheets metal, water

8. Skill level 175 – 200: Make fine steel plate from Sept 2000 patch. See detailed notes further in this document. These are all extremely expensive and extremely complex to make. As of now, trivial levels for collar, face, bracers is 181. One player reports 3 successes on 8 attempts at fine plate at skill level 152. Another player reports 15% failure rate at skill level 135 with strength and intelligence buffs. At 30 to 100pp per attempt, don’t do it before you trivialize on banded. Watch your success rates, I suspect they will be good enough that skilling up further will not need to be your primary goal.

9. Skill level 200? - ?: Make race specific armor. The first trade that you get to 200 on you will automatically specialize, and can go higher. All other trades will be capped at 200. Most Cabilis Scale armor is trivial at 185 by one player report.

I'm a Enchanter - max WT 85 and I can crawl at 220 WT or so. So I make sure I have all the Components to make whatever it is I want to make and then Fill up on Ore 500WT Plus then I gate to the Forge. I have helped other sniths (non-casters) to do the same, with two of you working together one carries the ore the other the rest of the components. You can do more if you have a good team. (We were making sheets of metal)

I have been doing shuriken for a bit now....any thing is better than skewers at this level...I lose less than a gold per success at 85 cha, and they are more useful than skerers...the skill raises seem much better.

Thanks for reply. Has anyone else tried something other than skewers, etcetera to get to the master level. (Master level of 100 is probably minimum to profit from lower level banded armor at 1pp per piece.)

Skewers are your best bet until they trivialize at 115, as they are very cheap to make, and their raw material (metal bits) stack. Your best bet to gain smithing skill quickly is to train to 21, then start making metal bits, at least a pack or so. Smith toolboxes, even though you'll be throwing money away as they don't stack or nest, being containers and all (or waste time selling them) until 51, then start making skewers until 115, as they don't require metal sheets (don't stack, and a pain in the *** to smith :P). At that point, get good Qeynos faction, as this is the place to be until 175. Why? Because there is a merchant in Qeynos Hills that sells infinite sheets of metal and the necessary armor molds. Do boots until 135, then cloaks until 175. Then, go into Everfrost and start killing spiderlings, wolves, and bears, and start making leather backings, you've got to make the money back from smithing somehow ;( By the way, dark races get hosed as far as skewers are concerned, unless you have good faction in Qeynos. Hope this helps.

I think I will be making Skewers when I get to the mid 50's. They will be used for making Loin, Bear, Wolf and Mammoth on a Stick. If I was not a baker as well I would make Bucklers or something enjoyable like that --- Which I just give away as I make them.

(Just enjoy the game ... not a skiller uppper person)

I was very unhappy with the sucess rate on skewers....that was why i switched to shuriken...slightly more costly and akward...but since i have been hunting rock dervs in Lava, I cut costs significantly

Those leather backings you're making are used for Fine Steel Plate and some other types of armors, like Adamantite Plate. You can sell them for 40pp/stack, but good luck finding a seller, as for the most part, those that are making them are making them for themselves. For Fine Steel Smithing, either be a caster or invest in sow potions and get good faction with either Highpass, the Gnomes of Steamfont, or the Dark Bargainers. Bind yourself (if you can) in front of a forge, then dump all non-essential items from your bags into the bank, buy a Smithy Hammer and a stack of water, and run to one of these locales. Buy as much MQ ore as you can, then gate or run back to the forge and make Folded MQ Sheets. They don't lose any weight, unfortunately, so slowly make your way to the Plate Mold vendor and get plate molds. Very few people smith FS Plate for skill, most do it for cash. Get molds from the vendor, gate/run back, then ask for your patron diety's blessing as you smith, as failures are time consuming and costly.
