Poles
# May 08 2001 at 1:13 PM Rating: Decent
Hi everyone. I'm new to EQ, and had a question about fishing that I thought someone might know. Can you make your own fishing poles? I've heard that you can make your own lures, but a master fisherman should be able to make his own pole too I would think. Let me know if you have any experience or knowledge in this area. Thanks.

if you're a gnome, you can tinker yourself a retractable fishing pole
RE: Poles
# May 11 2001 at 3:09 PM Rating: Decent
I don't think making fishing poles is considered a fishing skill--rather, a collapsible fishing pole can be tinkered (gnome-specific skill, not really practical til lvl 16). In general, EQ has pretty much ignored fishing; for instance, making, and fishing with, flies really seems to offer no advantage over buying and using cheap bait (tho I would be very happy to learn that I am wrong here)

I have caught a 16lb bass in the stream in FV that leads to Lake of ill Omen. Rather than being a meal it says it is a feast ...great but what the heck does fishing really do other than add some amusement to medding and a bit of extra food to my inventory? Will it come in handy later?

The highest trivial fly is the Yappin Doggie series made out of a Piece of Gnoll Fur (Blackburrow) and these are trivial around 35. I haven't heard the one about the fish eggs (Skinning knife, etc) But the people on eqtradeskills.com have been ******** a brick trying to find how to get fish eggs. I guess I'll run over there and see if they figured this one out yet as well.

Fishing skill past 125?

Ok can someone confirm this. i just saw a post in which a guy said you can only raise fishing above 125 by use of the tackle box and making bait..is this true?

This is not true. In fact I'm not aware of anything you can combine in your tackle box currently that is trivial above 125. In other words you can't increase your level above that by using your tackle box. The fishing lures are all below 50 it seems combining a thunder salmon and a skinning knife to get fish eggs and fish scales is the hardest thing to do but trivials before you become a grand master fisherman.

What probably happened is the person was at level 25 at the time they maxed out their fishing skill me thinks.
New use for the Tackle box
# Apr 09 2001 at 12:56 PM Rating: Decent
I had suggested mixing a scaler and a fish in a tacklebox to get fish scales - apparently something that has been confirmed to work is mixing certain types of fish and a SKINNING KNIFE (can only be made by and purchased from a PC blacksmith) to get fish eggs and fish scales.

Post all of your findings by fish type.

Info on Fishing Skills
# Apr 04 2001 at 11:17 PM Rating: Decent
If you want to be a master fisherman, you can do so by just regular fishing up to a certain skill lvl. The maximum it can go is 125, or did they raise it? Anyways, I would suggest to just use a regular fishing pole and regular bait till you get near 100 skill in fishing. Once you get around there, go to this barbarian on the first island that the BB Boat DOCKS, repeat DOCKS at. There is a barbarian near the docks that sells the tacklebox and the hooks to make the flies with. You can go to eq.castersrealm.com under tradeskills, fishing, and recipes to get the components you need to make flies. I suggest the ones that are easiest for you to get. The easiest ones for me to get are the wasp wings in GFay. Than of course all flies need silk thread. You can make your own silk thread and not even be a tailor. Just go to East Commons and kill Spiderlings or GFay and kill the spider hatchlings to get spiderling silk. Just buy a small sewing kit, put TWO spiderling silks in it to get 1 silk thread. Once you have all your ingredients, put 1 of any kind of hook you want, 1 silk thread, and 1 of your other animal object in the tackle box and hopefully you will succesfully make a fly.If you fail at making the flie, you will lose all ingredients except for the hook. I have been fishing ever since lvl 3, and that is a LOOOOONNNNGGGG time to be fishing. I hope this info helps you guys out.

RE: Info on Fishing Skills
# Apr 05 2001 at 12:02 PM Rating: Decent
with the new eq patch, putting the wrong ingredients into the tackle box shouldn't lose the ingredients; but if your fishing skill is too low to make the desired fly you will lose them and be mocked by verant ('you lacked the skills...')(flies, BTW, are reportedly trivial at fishing skill 30--I didn't check this personally since I didn't start to tie them til after that lvl). It is still not clear that tying flies is worth the trouble, since the fly seems no more effective than cheap bait in any way. I would be DELIGHTED to learn of an application for flies which makes them worth the trouble of getting the tackle box, hook and thread and, for example, wasp wing. If you do want to get the hooks and tackle box, watch the starboard side of the boat (right side for you lubbers) shortly after the zone after leaving butcherblock for the island mentioned in the above post--boat does stop at island dock for a very short time. After buying your fishing stuff there (you can also buy 'catch-a-lot bait', but i haven't so far--presumably you catch-a-lot more fish with it but it's expensive) you might as well gate to your bind point, since the islands are an unknown danger for low-lvl players.

Fish cakes vs fish rolls

What sells for a better profit--making a fish into fish cakes (fish +1 sauce) or making fish into fish roll (fish and bat wing). I sell fish cakes each now for 5silver 5copper and make 2 of them per fish. I never tried making fish rolls before...can someone tell me about how much the vendor gives you per fish roll. Also how many fish rolls are made with 1 fish and 1 bat wing..1 or 2?

Ok, besides cathcing fish more often--what does let say having a fishing skill of 175 or even 200 allow you to do..besides make the fancy bait?--does it allow you to catch things of value that cannot be caught at lower fishing skill. Thanks.
RE: To master fishermen
# Apr 04 2001 at 10:57 AM Rating: Decent
In theory, once your fishing skill clears 100 then you can catch certain rare things that are needed for certain quests and other high level stuff - although that may be changing since my ranger (fishing skill not even in the 30s) caught some salt water seaweed while fishing the OT and in theory I should have needed a 100+ skill to snag that find.

You can fish for fish scales or you can sometimes buy them in The Floating Castle in West Freeport

Other than fishing or combing the merchants, plan B is to buy a skinning knife and a tacklebox - combining certain types of fish and the skinning knife in the tacklebox gives you fisheggs and fish scales - check out EQTRADERS.com if you don't beleive it.
RE: Where/How to get Fish Scales
# Mar 24 2001 at 4:54 PM Rating: Default
If you do a moderate amount of fishing, you will sooner or later (sooner really) catch "something"--this is often a rusty dagger or tattered sandals, but is occasionally fish scales. You might try checking at vendors near where people habitually fish (e.g. boat piers) because players generally sell them to such vendors (at 4cp!)(look towards the bottom of the vendor's inventory), or invest in a fishing pole and some bait and do it yourself. Invest one training session in fishing skill so as to break fewer poles (tho I didn't break any until over skill lvl 60), at least such is the rumor. Of course, the fish you catch can be sold or made into fish wine or kept as food (same food value as a ration more or less)

If you jump off the boat from Freeport and swim to the island of the cyclops and give him a fishing pole and atleast 10 bait while he's attacking you, he'll stop attacking and wonder off to a small body of water hidden in the heart of the island and start fishing there. As long as he's fishing, you can fish as well and he and the other creatures wont attack you. For every point of fishing skill you have over 100, that is the best armor class you can catch - so if your fishing is 120, you can catch armor of up to 20 point value. If you give him that catch-a-lot bait instead, then you can catch various types of fine steel weapons. When the cyclops runs out of bait, then he'll attack you again, so the more bait you give him the better - he seems to go through about one stack of regular bait in 5 minutes or a stack of catch-a-lot in 8 to 10.

Hope that helps! ;)

Yes, fishing follows the SKILL CAP per level same as weapons skill or sence heading.
I lvled my fishing following my sence heading (3 presses of sence heading per fishing).
On the note of the 135 fishing at lvl 26 from a thread that is not a ceiling that is the max for lvl 26. On BREAKING poles I have broken 7 pole total so far.
MAKING LURE
PRO: You do not loose one unless you get the message you loose your bait or trying to catch land sharks.

You need the silk threads(trivial 21 no failure tailor skill) and you need wings or patches of fur plus hooks.

Con: the cost of silk or lvl of hunter to get(twink a low caster as a mule to farm them and kill you caster regularly to drop exp.)

Also baking fish is trivial 82 if you wish skill baking with fish but makes TWO fillets with low weight.

QUEST or rare fish would be the FVie Catfish(No drop) for a quest with a master forage item and 2 others(do not know if solved or broken at this time but I have the fish).

Recipes For lures:
There is not many recipes posted on the main sites if at all but here is a few that i know:

Bixie wing, silk thread, any hook, tackle box
gnoll fur, " " " " "" "
bat wing
pixie
rat fur

Please post any more that I do not have down.

Faerie Wing "
Gnoll Fur "
In order of appearance, makes:

RE: General Question
# Mar 13 2001 at 12:16 PM Rating: Default
I am lvl 12 wizzie and have maxed out fishing for my lvl (at 65) merely by fishing. I did go to the trouble of buying a tackle box and hooks (on brother island in Ocean of Tears) but the lures I've made aren't any different from bait, as far as I can see. A standard fishing pole and cheap bait seems all the equipment that is useful so far. I have only broken one pole (at skill lvl 62!), and though there is a collapsible pole somewhere (as loot), I think its only advantage is that it will fit in a smaller container. The same merchants on brother island also sell 'catch-a-lot bait'--presumably one can catch a lot more with it, but it's also a-lot-more-expensive, and I didn't try it. So far the main advantage of increasing fishing skill, as far as I can see, is that the time between casts goes down a little, and supposedly you break fewer poles, tho reportedly there are special fish in certain zones for which higher skill is needed--I just haven't found any in the places I've fished (Butcherblock dock, EFreeport dock, Ak'Anon). I'd be delighted to learn more myself on these questions, especially the question of lures and more amusing catches than 'a fish'.

Any one know if there is some level-based cap on fishing skill? I have a 135 skill (yes, 135) and after several prolonged fishing episodes, I have not seen a skill-up past 135. Now I am level 26 and surprise, the (level + 1) * 5 skills are also maxxed at 135. So form my observations it would seem that fishing is a level based skill which is unlike the trade skills.

Hail. I have a question or two about this...first off, are lures made with the fishing or tailoring skill? Second, where are tackle boxes and lures purchased? Third, are lures more effective than bait, or do you at least keep them after a fishing attempt? And finally, has anyone caught a cod? If so, where? Thanks!
RE: Cod and Tackle Boxes
# Mar 25 2001 at 4:25 PM Rating: Default
One nice thing about the lures is that if you fail your proficiency check, you don't lose the hook itself when you are constructing the things.

I'm sure that someone intended that one day different lures would allow you to catch different fish or be more effective at it, but considering that they still haven't made it so that player made food has any advantages over merchant food, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Still though, since making the lures is based off of the fishing skill, it is a fast way to level up if you need the fishing skill to catch, say, saltwater seaweed for smithing.

You can buy a tackle box in the Feerot if you are an evil race, there is a guy fishing by the river just past the huts there and he has the three hooks, tackle box's and all the usual fishing gubbins, rods bait etc. Also a line in Catch-a-lot bait too. Making the lures uses the fishing skill, Mine is around 30ish and some have trivialed already, whereas my tailoring is I think 3, and nothing trivials at skill level 3 ;)
And no I haven't caught a cod yet :(
Lures are lost the same as bait, only on a lost bait message and when you catch a fish. Catching 'other' items doesn't lose the lure the same as bait.

I haven't found that catching 'other' items (tatterered sandals, rusty daggers, fish scales etc) loses bait either--I'm still trying to find out if lures are worth it, they don't so far seem to be any better than bait and are much more trouble and expensive--I'd be delighted to find out if there's any advantage to them over bait
