Blacksmithing

Blacksmiths have the ability to forge their own armor and weapons both for personal use and for sale to others.

What are the best strategies for developing and using the blacksmithing skill? What items are the most and least useful ones to forge? Which classes are best suited to take up this trade? Can you make a profit off of blacksmithing, and if so how? Which cities are the best places to practice your trade?

Post your strategies on how to best use and develop the blacksmithing skill, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

Differnet Blue dyes?
# Mar 25 2001 at 2:13 AM Rating: Decent
Ok, i am makeing FP and wanted to make a blue, but i have seen like 5 different shades of blue on FP, but you can only add 3 resin to the permafrost crystals. Is there a nother Blue die out there?

Blue dyes are only made from Permafrost Crystals. After the Alchemist/Poison Maker has made the extract, it can be combined in a medium clay jar to make one of 3 different shades:

1 resin makes it a dull (cobalt) blue
2 resins makes it a bright blue
3 resins makes it an electric, baby blue

Also, each shade looks different on each race. Typically, for the boldest colors, use 2 resins, except for black: always use 1.

If I am not mistaken, the ornate chain recipes on this page are wrong.

Gorget, Bracers, Mask use 1 set of HQ rings (correct)

Belt, Helm, Mantle, Sleeves, Gauntlets, Boots website says 1 set of HQ rings but I believe it is 2 sets of HQ rings

Leggings, Cloak, Tunic website says 1 set of HQ rings but I believe it is 3 sets of HQ rings

Please correct me if I am wrong.

I just went from 132 to 175 in about 6 or 8 hours of playing time. It took me 500 plat at 89 int. I made banded mantles until 142, then switched to cloaks, which trivved at 175. It's long a tedious, but at 175 my success rate with cloaks (regarded as the most difficult piece of banded to make) is above 90%. From 175 on you can make fine plate, and start thinking about cultural smithing. Plus your profit from banded becomes more assured.

You should be more persistent. I think the trivial for the banded cloak is still 175. The gauntlets, leggings and mantle should trivial at 168. If that stuff is boring you, try making some ornate chain. I have few concrete numbers on ornate but I believe that the bracelet trivials at 156. Banded will of course be cheaper to make, but ornate should sell better. As usual, check out www.yegolev.com for the full story and post here/email me any corrections/additions.

" Imbued Field Plate Greaves = Three Folded Sheets of High Quality Ore + Greaves Plate Mold + Smithy Hammer + Leather Backing + Chain Jointing + Sea Temper + imbued item " ok ok.. I kinda understand how to get most of these pieces.. but what the heck is the 'imbued item'? I serched all the shops and couldn't find something called a imbued item.. am I missing something here?
RE: About this imbued armor stuff

Imbue is much like enchant only different classes can do it.
I'm a barbarian Shaman and will be able to imbue items as level 34 (10 more levels to go, sigh!)
So you might want to ask around if s.o. might help you out.
Please regard one of the previous remarks: you have to be racially compatible, so to speak.

Yup ypur missing something. The imbued item is a gem that represents the diety of the character wearing the armor. You need a cleric or shaman of the appropriate religeon to embue a gem for you. Jade for RZ Amber for CT ect. :)

Also your recipe is a bit wack. You might want to test it out without the imbued gem before you go wasting time and money. Of course it's possible that I'm just not familiar with what you're trying to forge, but I wonder about the sea foam? Is this some sort of Freeport smithing recipe?

Aye - most of the imbued armors will yield a non-imbued version without the gem. Just remember - you have to also be the RACE required to make them, else nothing will work...

You cannot make Imbued Dwarven Plate if yer not a Dwarf, etc.

Got this info from eqtraders.com.

The chain jointing, HQ folded sheet of metal, and the metal bar ALL need to be enchanted. I can't even begin to imagine the cost of even the simplest piece of enchanted full plate.

HQ metal follows the same pattern as other ore. 3 small bricks make a large brick. 3 large bricks make a block. 1 block plus smithy hammer plus water makes one folded sheet. I don't know at what point you need to get the ore enchanted, but I'm hoping it's the block.

3 major places I know of
# Mar 19 2001 at 2:53 PM Rating: Decent
Three places I know of:

1. Steamfont- safest place to go. A gnome in the middle windmill out of 3 windmills sells everything you need for dyeing plate armor except medium clay jars and the dye component, i.e. everfrost crystals and jack o'lantern fungi.

2. High Hold Keep- there is a vendor selling same basic dye stuff except clay jars and dye component. He is just around the corner from the bank.

3. Rathe Mountains- headed from Feerott, at the bug shring, take the left fork, and you will se 2 trolls and an ogre. One of the trolls sells basic dye ingredients except for clay jars and dye component.
don't forget to start tailoring :)
# Mar 19 2001 at 5:38 AM Rating: Excellent
Akkk!!!! Ok. So now I have the skill of 175 time to start skilling with Fine Plate. Oh, but wait. What is this? Leather padding? Now what. Can I go to the store and buy it? 99% of the time, NO. Leather padding, a main ingredient of fine plate, can only be tailor made. This means you either need to have a really good tailor friend or you need to start tailoring yourself. This was my delema this weekend. And yes, I am tailoring. It isn't that hard really. That is, if you are in the right area. This will only take you about 2 hours or less maybe to become skilling in tailoring high enough to make leather padding. Here is what I did:

1. Move to Everfrost or East Commonlands for a little while and buy a sewing kit, small or large.

2. Hunt spiderlings, place 2 spiderling (not spiders) silks in a sewing kit and combine. You then have silk thread.. save your silk thread for making padding. Skill with this till it trivializes at about pre or mid teens.

3. Buy about a stack or two of tailoring patchwork patterns, such as shoulder pads and wristbands. Should be only a few silver each, 6 I think. In a sewing kit, pattern plus any RUINED pelt then hit combine. It will make a patchworked item which is sold back to the vendor. Don't worry about pelt size because it is going to be sold to vendor anyways. Also, all patterns are not sized. Size is based on pelt size so don't worry about it.

4. Once you hit skill 20, which is fast if you are in everfrost, start making leather padding. Leather padding: combine in sewing kit any Low Quality (LQ) pelt and 1 silk thread. Bingo, you have leather padding.

Remember to have a skinning knife to lower the quality of the pelts.(very handy) You can start making these without failure if you are above smithing skill of 75-100.

The main reason why I tailored padding myself is because I was in EC today and a stack of leather padding (20pieces) sells for over 200pp. What a rip off, but that is the truth. So to save you some cash, make the padding yourself. Who knows, you may even make a little extra cash just selling stacks of padding.

Just a thought,

Good post. I've already made myself part of a suit of raw silk just by carrying my sewing kit around. I can testify that no one is very interested in parting with their spider(ling) silk for a reasonable price. So far I haven't hit a trivial level, otherwise I don't know my current skill, but I do know that skilling up in tailoring is a breeze compared to smithing.

Thanks for the help.

RE: int or wis? Which do I need.
# Mar 19 2001 at 4:38 AM Rating: Excellent
1 word.... both. You need INT to skill faster and WIS to be proficient (less failures). The more failures u have, the more cash it will cost to skill up. I've ust reached 175 with about 150pp in my pocket. Now I am starting to skill up with fine plate, and it is expensive. All your ingredients for fine plate are a pain to find, not to mention finding a forge. I am in HighPass now. I believe this is a great place because the forge isn't that far. But it is quite confusing running around here. As far as class is concerned, I believe a cleric would be great or enchanter. Enchanters can enchant metals to be used on realy nice cultural armors, but Clerics have nice imbue gem spells which will also be used on some kickin cultural armors. As far as race is concerned, dwarfs is a good choice. They have some really nice cultural armors. I am a paladin. It was my main when I started smithing so I stuck with it. Whatever you do, just remember one word... patience. Good Luck to ya,

Hail all!

This dwarven paladin has another question about smithing. Since I am not the most intelligent dwarf around (60 int, 92 wis) will it take many more years of toil and research to become a master smith than other characters who are also better looking (60 Cha)? If this is so, I will probably forgo becoming a master smith and focus on becoming a master smiter instead because it may be too expensive and take too much time to be a smith. Any help from the wise souls on the board would be greatly appreciated!

well to answer your question, I am a dwarf paladin of the 30th season & just began smithing with 55 cha 66 int( with a pair of +3 int earrings on) & wisdom of 101 ( with a little help). I went from 5 skill(trained) to 123 skill withouit selling anything to players in 4 - 5 days & 200-300 pp consumed. Use the links for blacksmithing skill & u can stermine wether you are gonna power skill up ( lots of plat) or work your skill up by foraging your plat & spending as you go, assuming you have a handy source for lots of plat, Hehe. I have found it takes a hugh investment before you can make anything worthwhile to sell to players, in time & plat. Wish i started earlier, but then you need a lot of $$$ too.

STR useful in Smithing?
# Mar 18 2001 at 1:36 PM Rating: Decent
I've been told that Int/Wis is no longer used in Smithing. Instead, the primary stat for Smithing is Str. Does anyone have proveable information on this?

Also, what is the best way for a Barbarian Smith to get the materials he needs?
RE: STR useful in Smithing?
# Mar 19 2001 at 4:45 AM Rating: Decent
The only use for STR I have found was for making long runs for MQ ore. Whoever told you that INT and WIS doesn't make a difference was totaly wrong, unless they have changed it on the last patch. Just because someone is strong doesn't make them learn any faster if they are stupid (low INT). Seems logical to me.

I cant find the old message again, but I remebered the following from a post about skills on smithing made by Verant when racial armor was introduced:
The higher stat of INT or (!) WIS will determ how fast u learn a skill but STR will influence the successrate.
In my eyes that do make sense but I wasn't rich enough yet to verify that

Hail all! I am a young Dwarven Paladin on a quest to become a great smith, able to fashion the greatest items in the land and defeat evil at every turn! But in Kaladim there seems to be a shortage of sharpening stones, forging hammers, and other basic necessities that my trade requires. If any wise individuals know where these items can be found or bought, I would owe thee a great debt. I have heard tell that sharpening stones can be found in Freeport, but it seems that they should be readily available in my own land, since us Dwarves are natural smiths and jewelers. If I need to travel to Freeport or some other land I will gladly do so, but if my eyes have failed me in the shops or some dastardly shopkeeper in Kaladim has not shown me all his wares, I would like to know. I also have a friend who travels with me and we enjoy killing many evil monsters that desecrate my beloved Butcherblock Mountains, so a trip to Freeport may hinder this quest of ours, and delay the cleansing of my lands. Any help would be greatly appreciated fine people!

(Out of Character now)

That was an attempt at role-playing, hopefully it wasn't too bad. In case I wasn't clear, I would like to know where to buy:

1. Sharpening Stones
2. Forging hammers
3. Various types of ore

And one other question. Do I need to be a good tailor to make higher level items, or is smithing enough? Thanks for any advice!

Dont mind at all :)

Anyway, the best way to start would be to either sharpen weapons to 21 (combine a sharpening stone and rusty weapon in a forge) or put training points into smithing. Then, make metal bits (2 small, stackable pieces of ore, flask of water) until you get about a backpack full. Use those metal bits to reach 51, by making Toolboxes (1 metal bit and 1 flask of water). Hope this helps!

I believe that it depends on the particular recipe, from what I have read. In theory it should be possible as it involves two separate spells on two separate items (enchant ore and imbue gem). However I believe that some recipies either do not exist or are broken. I'm afraid my experience in that area is rather skimpy.

BTW, good luck getting that sapphire. =)
