Blacksmithing

Blacksmiths have the ability to forge their own armor and weapons both for personal use and for sale to others.

What are the best strategies for developing and using the blacksmithing skill? What items are the most and least useful ones to forge? Which classes are best suited to take up this trade? Can you make a profit off of blacksmithing, and if so how? Which cities are the best places to practice your trade?

Post your strategies on how to best use and develop the blacksmithing skill, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

Maybe you guys have seen this already, but I for one am pretty happy about this one:

- Removed Gem component from the following spells. They will now only require the metal components. These are the Enchant spells for making cultural armor.

Enchant Velium
Enchant Mithril
Enchant Adamantite
Enchant Steel
Enchant Brellium

I notice there's no mention of Skyiron. Glad I'm a noble elf (more than I normally am).
No Enchanted Skyiron
# Apr 18 2001 at 9:16 AM Rating: Decent
Yes Yegolev, no mention of Skyiron because there is no Enchanted Skyiron in the first place. We only have imbued even if it was called enchanted at one time.

Still Glad That I am on Iksar LoL and I am Glad that the other races are getting this change. It
was not resonable to expect people to get blue
diamonds once V created jewlry from them.

Good Luck and have lots of Fun =)

WAHOO!! ^_^

I'll finally be able to create the enchanted tier'dal adamantite without having to compete with Enchanters and Clerics!

I'll be able to find out the stats on the enchanted stuff, without waiting on anyone else to do it first!

Now, to get a port back to Nektulos and some privacy at the forge...

I ADORE YOU, VERANT!!

Anyone have a trivials on Race Armor
# Apr 18 2001 at 6:50 AM Rating: Default
Its EXCELLENT news.... WOO WOO...

And I am glad I never spent the money on blue diamonds for mithril because I just failed 4 bits of imbued enchanted elven chain last night. My Skill is only 182. I wonder if I am having bad luck or whether this stuff is trivial at 250 with very small chance of success earlier on. I was hoping for more like a 50% fail rate. Ahh well time to make some money to start raising skill again. If anyone has any idea of trivials please leave a message or contact me on Veeshan.

Also I have a few spare tempers for other races if anyone wants to do some trading.

Elf blood drops off all the Sisters on Sisters Island in OOT. You can go auction on the island
and should have no trouble getting a large amount. You can also check the vendor in the hut on the island.

I have not personally found any, but my troll friend has on a couple occasions. A place where the killing might be fast and easy are the bandit sisters in G-fay. For a Teir'Dal you might be uncomfortably close to Kelethin and Felwithe, but if you are careful you can get there with no problem. If you are high enough level, there is always Sister Isle.

Maybe you can make studs. They will get you to 41. You will need a file, and you can get a file mold from Putad, or maybe Ungia, in Neriak's Foreign Quarter. Those ogres all look alike to me. If, as you say, Neriak sucks for smithing, you can get your file mold in East Freeport at the imported goods shop. I'm thinking they probably imported the file molds from Neriak, but they refuse to admit it, especially to a Koada'Dal like myself. Possibly afraid of Mithaniel Marr's wrath or something.

A toolbox might be easier to make, but since they are containers they are more difficult to unload. They should get you to 51, and you don't even need a file. However any self-respecting smith has a file in the bank.

I seem to remember making lanterns until 68, myself, but I do not know where you might get a bottle in Neriak. I made them in Erudin. If I had to guess, I'd say that bar where you buy sharpening stones; called Fish's Ale or something. I've heard of it, never been there myself.

Past that I believe metal rings will get you to 82, but I skilled past that before I knew of the recipe. They seem easy enough to make, and you might need a few later on.
Making Imbued Brellium Axe
# Apr 14 2001 at 9:50 PM Rating: Default
I've got the recipe, of course, from here (Imbued Ruby, Axe Head Mold, Oak Shaft, Folded Sheet of Brellium, Dwarven Smithy Hammer, Earthen Temper).

I stuck all the material into the Stormguard Forge on Xegony, and was informed that I didn't have the correct material.

I've also tried using a (purchased) Brellium Sheet instead of the Folded. It didn't work either.

Any ideas?

That was it, alright.

Correct recipe is Imbued Ruby, Folded Sheet of Brellium, Axe Head Mold, Oak Shaft, Earthen Temper. Combine in the Stormguard Forge.

Total cost of construction (91 Cha): 176 Plat.

Stats are as per the listing here. Sad, really. I've been using a Silvery 2H Axe since about Level 20 (now Level 35), and my God's own Blessed weapon isn't as good.

On the upside, I got a skill improvement (178) making it.

You can be level 1 and make any sort of armor. You simply must have the proper skill at smithing. I knew of a young elf that did not even turn in her guild note that rose to 180+ skill in the smithing arts. Even more remarkable than that was how she managed to survive the trip to Freeport from Felwithe without ever gaining one point of experience.

Bugged forge in Erudin
# Apr 12 2001 at 11:27 AM Rating: Decent
On the Torvonnilous (sp?) server [yes, I should have picked a server I could spell, but that's beside the point] at the regular forge behind the Darkwater pally/cleric guild. I have been using this forge to skill up my High Elf cleric since it is nice and quiet and I don't have a dozen peeps sitting around waiting for me to get done. Anyways, I've noticed what I think is a bug since the last patch. When I put the wrong number of ingredients into the forge and get the "These items to not combine in these quantities...etc, etc" message, I get kicked out to the server selection screen. After waiting for my character to re-sync, I log back in with all of my ingredients returned to my backpack - no loss; no problem.

I was wondering if anyone else, either on this server or another server have had this same problem????

I had the same problem, I think it cleared in the last patch. Torvon server as well. The Ogguk forge is also nice and unused, as are most of the Qeynos forges due to poor ore placement. Send me a tell if you want to swap/trade plate coloring components, I'm stocking up on Sarco Red right now.

I believe that the deity-specific imbuing is only dependent on the imbued ingredient used. I could be wrong. If you are able to imbue your own materials then you can save youself some aggrivation. Theoretically I should be able to smith mithril chainmail of Tunare, even though I worship Mithaniel Marr.

Let us know how it works out. By the way, don't attempt imbued armor until you have over 200 skill.

I swear to the gods, if I had a plat for every post I've seen where some spell caster is complaining about how hard it is to move ore around, my character would be rich.

Here's how to move around a ton of heavy ore fast and easy.

1) Bind yourself to the bank right in front of the teller.

2) Buy the ore then GATE to said bank.

3) Bind yourself right infront of the forge.

4) Grab as many molds, waters, etc as you need, goto the bank, withdraw as much ore as you need then GATE back to the forge.

5) Produce some armor for my Troll SK and Wood elf Ranger in gratitude.

Shining Wooley Spider Fungus, Hmm.
I have personally killed a thousand or so of these spiders making the silk thread for when (soon) i can make fs plate. I have stacks of leather padding & spider thread in the bank , from killing whooly spiders in Everfrost. Shinning wooley spider fungus , u know i just may have accidently sold some to the vendors at the entrance to Halas, or heaven forbid i destroyed it to keep the spiders spawning.
Haha, almost believable, i had to think back on all the things i harvested & destroyed off theses spiders, let me assure you, Shining silk fungus was not on the list. Hehe. (made me think tho)

There's a few things I've learned from spending way too much time one the internet.

1. Lots of details usually means BS. Heck, do any of us know that much about anything that we've just found out about? No, getting these recipes together takes time, money, guesswork, and money. This guy even has prices! I can't get a price check on a FBR most of the time on The Nameless.

2. Never trust an anonymous poster.

3. If it's too good to be true, blah blah blah...

4. Anyone who has hunted in SRo raise your hand. Anyone who has found "sand" raise your hand. Not that I've hunted the AC. And maybe I'm naive but I'm wondering about the "shining woolly spider fungus".

5. Any dorf who successfully combined something in the Qeynos Forge raise your hand. I don't think anyone can go for the idea of something smithable by any race in a racial forge. Pure ogrewash, I say.

RE: Lone smither
# Apr 08 2001 at 12:53 PM Rating: Decent
Maybe a druid wood elf wouldn't be so bad of a choice for a couple of reasons. They start out with a good amount of wis and int. Since they I find them wearing leather armors, they should be able to carry a good amount of wight. Most importantly I like the fact that they can port by level 19, not to mention gate and sow by level 14. This I find to be very important. I am a master-smith as a human paladin and I am not to happy about all the running around I must do to get much needed ingredients such as dye components, MQ ore, and different size molds. Don't forget strength as this becomes important when you start carrying MQ ore from the bank to the forge :) I can only carry 6-9 pieces or else I am walking to the forge VERY slowly even with sow and str buffs. Just my 2 coppers

I have done a lot of smithing in Freeport. I know that many of you have also. About once a week I hear someone shouting about how they can not find a pot or pie tin in the city. They shout and hell and get quite frustrated. I just sit back and wait for the magic words. I then hear in /ooc pots and pie tins can only be made by blacksmiths. Then I hear them shout "Ahhh if there is anyone here that can make a pot for me, I will pay them 100pp!" :) Bingo Then I zero in for the kill. I tell them I have a couple of pots in the bank waiting for them. I also have a pie tin in which they offer me 200pp for 1 piece. Pots are easy to make and I am sure you must have used them to skill up in blacksmithing. As for pie tins, they are not so easy because you have to learn some pottery skils as well. Why not start now bacause if you intend to dye your fine plate, you need to make medium clay jars for your dyes. Medium clay jars are potter only made items. Just keep a pie tin and a couple of pots in the bank. I promise you, they are not a waste of space. People around the freeport area such as ECommons are RICH. I am posting this because I have made over 1000pp so far just by keeping an ear out.

People make those through smithing? They seem much easier for me to make through pottery...reguarding the 'gold mine', I agree, there are some desperate people out there, especially for the quests in Thurgadin, and for those of us that havent already mastered baking...

PS. Pots and Pie tins can also be made through pottery.

PPS. Normally, if someone starts asking around, I'll make them one at no charge, I strive to be useful ;P

RE: High quality metal ring
# Apr 06 2001 at 5:33 AM Rating: Decent
I am not too sure about the chainmail patterns because I have never found HQ metal till yesterday. Here is a list of pattern suppliers that I have gotten from the internet:

North Qeynos: In Qeynos outside the front of Iron Forge Estates, in Halas upstairs in McDaniels. Assuming these are same as used for Northman Chainmail, watch sizes, Qeynos is medium.

Med in: Felwithe, Freeport, Neriak, Qeynos

Small in: Kelethin, probably Rivervale.

Large in: Halas

For HQ ore, these are found in dungeons. Yesterday was the first day that I have even seen HQ ore. This was at the ore vendor in High Hold Keep. It went for almost 37pp a block or maybe a brick, not too sure on that one. I am only level 21 and I do not go through dungeons that cary HQ ore yet. Hope this helps.
