Blacksmithing

Blacksmiths have the ability to forge their own armor and weapons both for personal use and for sale to others.

What are the best strategies for developing and using the blacksmithing skill? What items are the most and least useful ones to forge? Which classes are best suited to take up this trade? Can you make a profit off of blacksmithing, and if so how? Which cities are the best places to practice your trade?

Post your strategies on how to best use and develop the blacksmithing skill, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

I have several friends, acquaintances and guildmates who regularly ask me for tailoring supplies. Will thoase of you who sell these frequently please post your prices on the following items:

Stacks of metal studs
Stacks of bonings
skinning knives
Heady kiolas (i know this isn't smithing, but worked up my brewing so I will be able to make tempers later on)

Please post your minimum, average and maximum prices, as well as your server.

btw, I have searched EQtraders for this info, to no avail, and looked through several pages here as well. Wish I could figure out how to search topics here. Is that possible?

Many thanks

RE: small brick

The only remote way of making a profit is if buy alot of velium and selling it in another place like freeport or the begining of the tunnel in east commons were you can not get velium.
RE: small brick
# Aug 05 2001 at 3:40 PM Rating: Default
ok, first off, you can't buy somthing from a vendor and sell back to players to make a profit.
2nd: before you do anything for your smithing, read as many guides as you can, gather as much info from them as you can and then you might have a bit of success.

Ok, so I searched the everquest website, and unless I really missed something, I don't see where it says you can't buy from a merchant and sell to a character for profit. Hello, that is part of playing a merchant. If you are going to take the time to go to a remote location and seek out items then why shouldn't you make a profit for your trouble? I have seen and heard of a lot of players who create a character primarily to be a merchant. To say you can't buy and resell is like saying you can't sell loot to other players.
and you can say, well wouldn't it be dishonest to go buy something thing up in Kelethin and then sell it down below for twice the price. Well, yeah, maybe, but really players should be looking to buy from merchants first. And besides, if you are buying to sell to characters who are KoS in that city, well, maybe you do want to make the profit. If nothing else, for RP reasons. I mean, what if you took faction hits for selling to KoS characters at your city gates? Why not RP like you could?
I'm not saying you should do it. I'm just saying not to tell other people they can't.
I'm smart enough not to pay out the wazoo for things I need. On the other hand, if I'm hunting guards in Nek and get desperate, I might be willing to pay trumped up amounts to a newbie willing to do some buying for me. I mean, if i'm going to be too busy or lazy (depending on the situation) to jog over to commons to do it myself...
As to people buying from PC's, treat PC merchants like you do NPC merchants. I mean, don't you try to buy from NPC's who are amiable or indifferent to you so you get better prices? shop around. And don't be afraid to haggle a little. If the price is outrageous, he isn't making sells anyways.

My 2cp

oh, hey, one more thing. Even if your character is dishonest, the player should be honest. If someone asks where the items came from, either tell them in a private tell, or explain to them why you won't.

Peace. ;)

I think the point was that vendors charge a sh*tl**d of money for items, reselling them would not be profitable. One example is with my first character i ever played i bought a ruined totem staff from a vendor, it was like 80 some plat, whereas the average PC would be lucky to get 15-20pp for it at auction.
Most common mistakes
# Aug 05 2001 at 11:12 AM Rating: Decent
After getting two characters to Master Smith and reading all the forums I see one mistake that people make again and again....

They are using the race specific forges. DONT DO THAT. Those forges are for making upper end player made armors. They will NOT allow you to make parts, or sharpen weapons.

Just my 2p.

READ THIS, ALL DEVOTED SMITHIES!!!!!!

IF YOU ARE A TRUE SMITH I HOPE YOU ARE READING THIS! I have found that once i start banded and as of a few weeks ago, fine plate. i have to buy many molds for the armor. and when you are raising your skill by making tons and tons of pieces of armor, you know it really sucks to run back to the mold vendor to buy more molds. this is very agrevating to me, and i'm sure it is the same to all of you. Just recently Verant made Sheets of Metal stackable, *sigh's in releif* what a great day that was(for me at least). but before it was stackable you could only make your pieces a few at a time because no matter what bags you have you ALWAYS run out of room. and now that sheets of metal don't take up so much space, my attention has been brought to the molds. why can't THEY be stackable?! it's would make things so much easier, would it not?! now that i'm on Fine Plate what i found is more eficient to do si to go broke making folded sheets of MQ metal and banking them, and then once i have many sheets stacked in the bank, buy tons of molds and go to work. i wish i could buy tons of molds and stack em in the bank so that when i'm ready to lvl a bit in my smithing i can just grab a few stacks of molds and a few stacks of sheets and go to work instead of running halfway across Norrath to get my molds before i begin crafting. I'm telling you all this because i would hope it bothers some of you, i'm thinking if enough of u post on the boards that verant actually reads, maybe we got a shot at them making stackable molds. I hope a bit of this has actually caught your attention. thanks for your time.

Yes, this would help use the blacksmith out alot and I do hope this does happen. But I think the long range attempt of the game is for the blacksmith not to store, for example, all 3 sizes of each different mold, which would be possible if they are stackable. And if you really are looking at these mold for real, think of the size of just one cloak or breastplate mold and then think of them stacked by 20 and then a handmade backpack with 10 slots. 200 molds in one backpack, NOT. If I had to vote to make the molds stackable, I would lean twords staking. But alas, I dont think this will ever happen because this would make blacksmithing harder for all to find customers, as the high level blacksmiths would have the corner on all the market.

This is a reply to the post on the subject of Imbued Items used in crafting Imbued Field Plate.

I may be wrong, but i believe some gems can be imbued by certain classes. the imbued items you are looking for may be imbued by other players.
not much help, i know. just my 2 cents.

Imbued Item
# Aug 03 2001 at 2:41 PM Rating: Default
The Imbued Field Plate recipes for Human Cultural Smithing in Freeport all call for an "Imbued Item." Can anyone tell me what this is or where it can be found? I know some casters can "imbue an item," but does this mean that any imbued item will work in the recipe? If not, what item needs to be imbued, where can I find the item and what's fair to pay someone to imbue it for me?

The embued items are gems. Depending on deity, a cleric or shaman (only ones I'm sure of) can embue a specific gem. Mith marr is diamonds, makes really good +4 str, +2 wis field plate pieces, great for Pally's. Ero marr is rose quartz, makes +4 wis, +2 char armor. All of these are listed on EQtraders.com, as well as more info on armor stats. Note, some pieces have more stats than I list, but all (for that deity) have at least the above stats.

Clerics get the embue ___ (their specific gem)at level 29.

How to Blacksmiths
# Aug 03 2001 at 3:56 AM Rating: Good
Train in the Guild until 21
Sharpen rusty weapons until 31 you'll need (1 sharpening stone and 1 rusty weapon)
when you hit 31 start to make metal bit's you are going to need lot's off them. start off bye makeing 400 or so, you can allways come back for moreTo make metal bits, you will need " two small pieces of ore and a flask of water" .
Then make scalers until 41 you'll need "one metal bit, one scaler mold, and one flask of water"
Now make Lanterns they max at 68 here you need " 1 metal bit, 1 lantern mold, 1 bottle, and a flask of water" good you are 68 :)
Here is the part that will get you upp to master"115" hehe This part you'll be makeing skewers for this you what "1 Metal bit, 1 skewer mold, and a flask of water" Opps your a master.
But you still need to do lot's off suff til you can make Fine steel armor.
Make pot's until you are 122"Metal bit, pot mold, standing legs mold, and a flask of water"
Make small sewing kits until 135."Metal bit, needle mold, thimble mold, and a flask of water"
Now is the part you start use pp Make banded armor to 175
Make Bracers "Sheet of metal, flask of water, bracer mold"(142)
then make Cloak "Two sheets of metal, flask of water, cloak mold"(175)
you are kan now start to make Fine steel armor

keep this in mind NEVER STACK ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!
RE: How to Blacksmiths
# Aug 07 2001 at 9:19 AM Rating: Default
Its way easier to get from 21 when bits are trivial to 52 by making toolboxes - 1 metal bit 1 flask of water - then go on to make the lanterns. Molds are annoying enough so avoid them as long as you can.

Make pots until you hit 122, then sewing kits. Sewing kits are containers, so need an open slot. Highhold pass or erudin are good for this as there is a place to buy the needle and thimble molds, a forge, and a vendor to sell back to in close proximity. There may be others, but those are the ones I've personally found.

Troll smith... maybe
# Jul 27 2001 at 10:25 AM Rating: Default
I am a low level Troll SK and I'd like to start smithing. I've put a few points into smithing but, when I put a rusty weapon and a sharpening stone into the forge in Grobb, I'm told that these items can't be combined. Am I missing something, or do I need to put more points into the skill? I hope it's not a "race-specific" thing.
RE: Troll smith... maybe
# Jul 29 2001 at 11:35 AM Rating: Default
Looks like you found the so-far useless Troll racial forge. It can only be used to make Troll racial items, and will not combine normal items. Try looking for a forge that when you open, the container(the forge) says at the top: "Forge"
