Fletching

The Fletcher can make his own bows and arrows, both for personal use and for sale to other players

What is the best strategy to develop and use the fletching skill? Which recipes are the most and least useful? Can you make a profit off of this skill, and if so how? Where is the best city to practice your skill? What classes are best set to take up fletching?

Post your strategies on how to best use the fletching skill, and read those posted by others.

Profit?

I would have to disagree that fletching is not profitable. It is not my sole source of income, but certainly a welcome one. I'm a druid, but I always adventure with a ranger friend of mine, and keep her well stocked with quality arrows. Keeps our costs down. =)

However, I also carry around at least 40 of each component for 1/150 arrows. If there is some down time, I'll auction them off at 10pp / 100. It costs me less than 2 pp in most cases to buy the components, and at my skill level there are generally 1 or 2 failures in 40 attempts for these arrows.

I'll grant that there aren't a whole lot of tells, but on occasion I'll get a couple. And really for me, it doesn't matter, I know my Ranger friend will be able to use them if I don't sell them. I've also got a couple of regular customers who will buy from me whenever they are in need. I usually sell to them for close to cost, and being able to port and gate makes it easy to get to my customers. The key is to not expect to make a living at fletching, but to be able to supplement your income.

At 7th level I made a run into Kith at night to sell arrows to a regular, (45th Ranger) who gave me 50 plat in danger pay in addition to the cost for the arrows. He's gotten free arrows ever since. =)

i make a reasonable profit off arrows as well. One of the things i have been working toward is establishing a good base of customers. I try to travel where ever they are, even when the money isn't worth it, hoping to have a loyal customer base in the future. I also give away free (cheaply made hickory and elm) bows to newbies to try and expand my future market for arrows. I am only 12th season and by the time i get to where i am making those serious arrows, those newbies (at least some of them) will be higher lvl, richer char that can buy them. I have also found that rg 150 is the way to go for good selling arrows. I have heard that rg doesn't do squat and i have heard that it helps with your chance to hit. My personal exp shows me that it does help a lot with chance to hit and that is what i tell my customers. I have not had any negative feedback from them so am assuming that there is some truth to that

Aye. I agree that while you wont get rich, your fletching can provide reasonable profits. I for one have achieved a skill of 185. Cost me prolly 1500 plat or so to get there. Not counting a few arrow and cheap bow sales...I have made around 2100 selling 2 fast darkwoods and 1 high dmg darkwood (yes, luckily fer now, im 3 fer 3).

The skill level also lets me make 'nice' (elm, ash, and oak) bows and arrows for my guildmates and friends for cost or free (if I'm in a good mood).

heh fletching can make you a reasonable amount of profit

i have just stated and have a skill of 68

I know its not high but listen to this....

Last night while trying to sell bows i sent out this auction..."WTS handmade bows and arrows"....in the next ten seconds I had about 10 tells asking if i could make darkwood or steeltips and other things and after that in like the next miute i got like over 15 more tells asking the same things. Unfortunatly my skill is only 68 so i could not help most of these people :( BUT THATS OVER 20 TELLS IN ONE MINUTE!! now if you can get your skill up to lvl 100 or so it would make GREAT PROFIT!! (and belive me its not hard it took me about 30 mins to get it up to 50 and then another 15 to get it to 68 and it only took me like around 20pp)

After I get the hounerable title of "master fletcher" im going to master blacksmithing as well then tailoring so i will be able to make lotsa money*smiles* *more smiles* *extra smiles* *i thought id ad a little more smiles*

*grin*
Ill be richer than a rouge

I know this Quest may take lots of money to finish but in the end i belive it will pay off

yeah, i have ppl asking for darkwood and oak all the time, better wait til rank 150 for oak (at least, from what i have heard) and around 200+ for darkwood. Lord only knows what rank it would take to make a tripped out darkwood with two cams and planing

I would think that steel and ceramic staves would have to be made. You'd need a smith for the steel staff and a potter for the ceramic staff. Needless to say, it won't be easy, I'm sure. But it also shouldn't cost 3k to attempt one.
RE: steel and ceramic bows
# Sep 19 2000 at 11:05 AM Rating: Default
Darkwood Bow Staves run 250pp, but it doesn't matter. The damage a High End bow does isn't as good as it should be. Doing 20dmg on a high level mob is next to nothing. If the Steel and Ceramic Bows are more expensive, they better do HORRENDOUS amounts of damage to mobs. Otherwise, they'll be cost limited like the magic arrows.

Bladed arrows cost 3pp per batch of 5. You'll easily burn through 10 arrows on a single mob above 20th level. You get back around 6gp if you're lucky. That's a net loss of 5pp per usage.

Steel and Ceramic bows will be nice for Status Quo but the numbers will tell their true worth.

im a sk and usually soloing....the best time to start making arrows is after a battle and when your full mana but not full hp....instead of just sitting there...buy a few arrow components bring them with you and make them while you wait.....
RE: best time to make arrows
# Sep 15 2000 at 11:53 AM Rating: Default
Yup. I agree. As a Ranger, I solo till you reach that low point of Health and Mana. Then find a nice spot, open up that spellbook, and fletch till you've healed yourself.

Hell, I've even fletched while running across the EC tunnel back to Oasis. The fletch kit and the backpack don't take up that much room. With some skill, you can fletch on the run.

In Oasis, I had crocs rooted and ran out of arrows while I was shooting them. Arrows are not just for pulling! Open up your inventory, quickly fletch 10 more, then continue FIRING! He'll not going anywhere. Keep a good distance, cause when root breaks, he's coming after you.

Riding a boat somewhere? Fletching lets you heal, meditate, and make ammo while you wait. You'll see the zone message when you get near your destination. Get up and you're ready to go!

Tips 4 beginners

Flechting is in my view perfect for a ranger or rogue, and maybe a pally. If its your first time flechting here r some tips

*dont sweat it if it takes a while its worth it trust me

*Sell the cheap arrows or cheapers as i cal them
at 1gp 5sp or so a stack think of it like this an average store bought arrow is about 1 silver a piece so a full stack of those is 2gp,you profit 5 silver they save 5 silver everybodys happy, dont worry in a while youll br knocking them up for a world of money

*bows are a great way to get your skill up and even the cheapest bows sell for about a plat which comes out to a 75% profit not bad

*practice just practice period

*you think it is profitable already you aint seen
right now im selling bows at up tp 10pp and arrows and an avg of 2pp 5gp and ive made as much as 5pp a stack hehe

*look around when your grouping inspect your groupies bows if you can make better offer them.

*offer 5 free arrows with every bow trust me it costs a little but theyll come back

*advertise get friends to help sperad the word youll be pretty well known in certain zones

*always carry extras people if they know u flech will offer to buy arrows and because there desparate take them for every copper their worth

*look for bows only gotten by quests at higher skill levels you can make the god like bows do this even if you cant use it a trueshot long bow sells for about 200pp considering the parts come out to under a plat its more than worth it

Charisma in Trade Skills

Everyone needs charisma! If you are performing a trade skill that requires you to buy from or sell to a vendor then you NEED to get enough charisma gear to get your cha over 103. The cheapest charisma gear thats not too hard to get, where to get it, and probable prices with (pp/cha), are:

Mystic Doll, Feerrott, 3 cha, Free (0)
Medal of Merit, Qeynos, 5 cha, Free (0)
Silver Cats Eye Necklace, Jeweler, 3 cha, 1.5pp (.5)
Silk Evening Tunic, Qeynos, 5 cha, 5pp (1)
Crude Stein, Feerrott, 15 cha, 30pp (2)
Electrum Cats Eye Bracelet, Jeweler, 4 cha, 8pp (2)
Golden Cats Eye Bracelet, Jeweler, 7 cha, 26pp (4)
Splitpaw Tooth Necklace, SK/Paw, 5 cha, 25pp (5)
Opalline Earring, Unrest, 5 cha, 30pp (6)
Electrum Star Ruby Ring, Jeweler, 7 cha, 128pp (18)

That is more than enough gear to get anyone with a base charisma of 40 to 103 for optimal prices, so anyone can leave out the expensive or harder to get gear.
As an example of what this will do, if you fletch from 1 to 100 skill selling arrows back to the vendor, you will spend approximately DOUBLE the money at 60 charisma that you would at 103.
Sneak
# Aug 27 2000 at 3:08 PM Rating: Excellent
Do not forget to use sneak on those vendors that con less than indifferent to you, it does effect prices. successful sneak (from behind or side) will result in indifferent status from vendor and you can lower cost a little and raise profit a little. I know Rangers, Rogues, Bards and (I think) Monks all get sneak at some point.

Hmmmm Now we can Smith some of our supplies

New Blacksmithing receipes :)

Water + file + 2 lg bricks of med ore = Steel Arrow Shafts
Silver bar +file + block of MQ ore + water = Silvertipped Arrowheads
File + large brick of ore + water = Hooked Arrowheads
Metal bits + water + file = Field Arrowheads

I wander if it will help bring the cost of making the Steel arrows to smith them ourselves.

I'm going to give it a try. Will let you all know what I find out :)

Let's see. At 6cp per field point from a vendor, it's cheaper to buy them than to smith them. After all, you've got about 1gp 3sp in each metal bit. You can make other things with those bits, so, unless the costs of ore goes down significantly, it won't be economical to smith field points, nor hooked arrowheads. The silver tipped will need some research, but I'm afraid that the ore costs will push the cost of smithing them higher than the 4pp 5gp range, which is about what you'd pay a vendor, assuming you had a charisma in the 80's or so.

That said, it may be about a wash, cost wise, to smith the steel shafts, or it may actually be worth it to smith them. One would have to compare the costs of smithing them as opposed to buying them to know for sure.

I do beleive though, (I haven't tested, just heard rumors) That each sucessful combine of fletching componants yields 5 of those componants. Now, that still makes field points pointless to smith, but everything else quite a bit cheaper.
Like I said, I've yet to test since my smithing skill is only 35 of so.
Hmm... I heard 20
# Sep 17 2000 at 11:08 PM Rating: Default
The post I read on it says you end up with 20 of the part. If that's true, field's turn up to be pretty much a wash, but the rest of 'em would be considerably cheaper if smithed. (possibly TOO much cheaper... possibly a profit to make the heads then sell 'em... or arrows then sell 'em.) NOTE: If you get 5 out, then fields would be considerably more expensive to smith, and hooked would be a wash. I didn't really feel like waiting through a HUGE test patch, so have no way to price medium quality ore.

i have confermed that u get 20 field heads from 1 attampt
i am an iksar however so i have no access to MQ ore, but will be gettig some soon to test the othere rescipies.

also the rescipy give to make hooked arrow heads is wrong, that rescipy produces metel rings. i beleave it should be:

water + file + 2 lg bricks of MQ ore = (20 ?)steel arrow shafts
silver bar + file + block of MQ ore = (20 ?)silvertipped arrowheads
FILE + LG BRICK OF MQ ORE + WATER = (20 ?)HOOKED ARROWHEADS
metal bits + water + file = (20)field arrowheads

Ok, I'm not a power-skiller (up to 160 by lvl 35), but I can say that a good fletched arrow is worth the cost, if you can afford it.

If you are hunting in a good loot area, then don't bother with the 3dmg 125range arrows, unless your sole goal in fletching is to prepare your lvl 59 ranger for the plane raids, using that new X2 damage rule. Instead, make GOOD arrows often, and use them regularly.

At lvl 35 and max archery, a 4 point difference in damage (hooked steel instead of point wood, with the bone vanes) translates into 8 extra max damage, or 15 extra max crit damage. In this case, I have caused my crit hits to jump from 45 to 60. And this is for a ranger; I can image warriors can do better. Who knows warriors? maybe you can launch that 100 dmg arrow to the surprise of everyone at lvl 35, stopping that running mob COLD.

Either way, the purpose of arrows is to hurt people, not to make future arrows to hurt people. Used wisely, they can improve your performace, while you are building your bankroll for the next set.

At lvl 35, I usually make 150pp between runs to Kelethin, and it takes 100pp to fletch 100 of my best current arrows. 50pp per MM run, AND fletching skill to boot... who can say no?

JUST AS AN AFTERNOTE, to answer the posts below mine:

If you are not in a position to get the same influx of plat as I am, then this method is not for you. It is intended only for those who can afford the skill, to give them a kick-in-the-**** that if you CAN afford it, DO afford it.

Great tactic! I've used all that I fletched till 100 skill. I'm now overloaded with good arrows at this point. Gotta go out and The 2 damage 150 range arrows are where I'd stock up on for combat uses. The bulk of my cash goes into Fletching for skill now. At my current level, I can't afford to blow 100pp on 5 stacks of awesome arrows. I do reserve a stack of Bladed Arrows for Ghouls and Wisps, but those are for emergencies only. If I had the cash, I'd follow suit...

I am at skill level 141 and I have to say that it isn't worth us spending all our money to make arrows that do massive damage unitl you might get to the planes. At my 28th season as a ranger now, I make the arrows that I need to to increase my skill and then sell them back to the merchant that sold me the fixings. I use 2 dam, range 150 arrows for my personal use and they cost me less than 5pp to make 100. This way i can use them without thought and not worry about money. By selling back to the merchant I recoup around 70% of my cost in making the arrows to increase my skill. For me to go from 135 to 141 it cost me 80pp. That is the most i want to spend at this time and the smartest way to save my money.

That vendor in Feerrott also has the bow staves and strings. Needless to say, it would be nice if they were closer to Neriak, but at least there is a bow supply vendor close enough to home that I can make bows as my skill improves, or I need cash for skill improvements.

Trueshots: Legendary bow with incredible difficulty. A source of pride for any True Ranger. The Odds are not good at 200 and decreases with less skill in Fletching. At 200, this gives a dismal 60% sucess rate. Like any probability, failing 3 times doesn't gaurantee that your fourth will succeed. Hell, you could make 6 in a row if your luck held out. That's how probability works! (Sounds like math class.) A person can try it under 100 skill, but your odds drop off until it's like winning the lottery. Now you folks know why they sell for over 200pp?? This offsets the Master Fletcher skill required to sell the bow and re-make another. Massive attempts could yield a bow with lower skill. Better bring several full stacks of the quest components and pray to Tunare.

Sell them for 200-250 depending on what zone i"m in

I roleplay my Ranger to the hilt and I wrote up my tale to inspire my fellow brothers and sisters. You merchants who just want it for sales are the ones who don't desrve it. I considered it a gift from Tunare. Go in peace.

RE: warrior

WHAT GOOD IS A BOW??? OMG! Let me illustrate...

You and a wizard friend come across a solitary Caiman in Oasis. He roots and begins to nuke. You whip out that bow and drop arrows till the cows come home. Spare yourself those nasty 32 point bites. Down time is BAD. Arrows cost 1sp each for goodness sakes! Drop a half dozen and close to melee in when root finally breaks. Easy.

A larger group hits an orc camp. You can run in, get beat on by all 4 orcs, get bashed, beat on some more, then turn around to have the enchanter mesmerise while any extras still beat on you. The group has to heal you and you risk dying from the pull. Otherwise, you can pull with a bow and run backwards to the group. Your enchanter Mesmerises them as they run in. Plenty of reaction time and you spread out the mobs. Best of all, you take no damage till the group is ready to deal with them!

Mob runs at you.
Drop an arrow into them.
Free hits!

You run low on HP's but still want to help... Step back and ...Drop an arrow into them.
( WARNING : Do NOT aggro the MOB!! )

Wounded Mob runs away.
Drop an arrow into them.
Finishing blow at 100yards!!

Rangers don't like to share their secrets of success. Take this one as a freebie.
Get yourself a bow! Learn to use it.

RE: warrior
# Aug 21 2000 at 6:56 PM Rating: Decent
Bow benefits pullers who have the ability to use it. Especially for classes such as warrior who lack the ability of offensive damage spells. When pulling, a warrior without a bow would have to get within the agressive range of the monster to initiate the battle. With a bow, a warrior can initiate the battle from a safe distance. This gives the warrior a good head start and reduce the chance of getting hit by the monster while running back to the group. The less the warrior getting hit by the monster, the less precious mana the group healer needs to use for healing.

That is just one example I could come up with. I am sure there are more things one can do with a bow in battles.

OK, there are many guides that teach you how to raise skill fast..BUT, this is an expensive skill.

So, why waste money just to learn a skill?
My first recommendation: if you don't use a bow, DON'T FLETCH!!!!

Thats right, take up a different skill, fletching is for those that use the goods

OK, you still want to fletch...go get a lot of cash, then make yourself a hickory bow, they are easy
then buy 20 each of the cheapest arrow parts..make as many arrows as you can..
(best guide for what pieces do what is aoenla's fletching guide, linked from allakhazam)
I recommend you only make arrows when you need them, and always make the best arrow your skill allows(ie best damage/range combo)
Your skill will raise satisfactorilly if you just keep yourself supplied..my warrior got to skill 125 by lvl 24, just making arrows for herself.

Always make the best bow you can for yourself,
also, bows are the best thing to make for sale, a good bow goes for a sweet price on the player market, while most people wont pay enough for arrows to make up for the cost of the components.

Well, there is my advice, mind you, I don't powerfletch, i fletch to keep supplied and do a little extra damage!

Fletching to use the arrows is fine, up until skill level 135...then it becomes alot more expensive to use the arrows. Assuming 75% success rate using the Bone Vanes (to take you from 135 to 162), you will be spending about 7.5pp / stack (assuming at least indifferent con and 106 min CHA) of 20 arrows to make something usefull (3 damage, 125 range, using Field point, Bone Shaft, Bone Vane, and Small Knock)...considering the rate of skill increase you can expect, it will take you alot of time and money to get to 162 (and Beyond).

What I started doing when I hit 135, was use only the component needed to increase in skill, and all the cheapest avaiable for the other items, selling results back to the merchant. With a decent CHA kit, the loss is not that bad. And when you get to 182, you can actually make money selling your product to the merchants....not alot, but some. The recipe (the only one I found that is profitable) is the following: Field Point, Wood Shaft, Ceramic Vane, and Large Knock. This takes you to 200 skill. Actually, from 162 on, this is the recipe I used, and spent less than 100pp in the end (failures at first cost, but more success as I passed 182 made profits on almost every batch)

ok this is one of those skills that you had better start early on in the lvl's, especially if you're a Ranger. It's going to be a long time before you get to master and it's going to take a lot of money out of you. Now, Allakhazam has a lot of very good links to fletching strategy guides in the trade skills section, so I won't repeat all of that here. If you're planning on taking this skill to the 200 mark, keep in mind, this is the second most expensive skill to raise next to jewelcraft. I started this skill at lvl 8 and have finally gotten to a skill of 144 at lvl 24. Now, given I slacked off to concentrate on lvling for a couple of lvls but that's still a long time. At this skill lvl I can now make bows with bone vanes somewhat consistantly and can make most of the bows and it is cheaper than buying premade bows and arrows, like most of the trade skills. Check out Aoenla's Fletching Guide in the fletching section of allakhazams for the most comprehensive information about this skill and how to increase it over time.
