Balix Misteyes is at /loc 2917, 3218, 215.29.

You say, 'Hail, Balix Misteyes'

Balix Misteyes says 'Outlander, hail. Share the fire. I have little but if you are in need then take what I have. If you need nothing then take nothing. Balix my name is. Shaman to the tribe of Snowfangs.'

You say, 'What Shaman?'

Balix Misteyes says 'Yes. Shaman. I listen to the land to tell my tribe what the winds and waters will bring. Good or bad. Little good and much bad these days. That is why I sit here listening.'

You say, 'Listening to what?'

Balix Misteyes says 'I am on spirit quest. No food do I take. All day I listen only. I wait until the land tells me how to help my tribe. Maybe nothing will happen but I cannot fail to try. Hard is this. Many dangerous creatures are near but none come close so far.'

You say, 'What dangerous creatures?'

Balix Misteyes growls under his breath. 'Most dangerous is the Garou. Evil spirit of the land. It was made from long dead wolf spirits when the tower spread its dark magics through the islands. It preys on the Snowfang. We have tried to hunt it but always it is too strong.'

You say, 'I will hunt it for you.'

Balix Misteyes says 'If you want to try, you can hunt Garou. If you kill, spread its soul to the air for cleansing, then all is good. Its skin is powerful from the magics that made it. With a cougar's bone, fresh with the spirit of earth, I can make you powerful talisman in thanks for your service to Snowfangs.'

The cougar bone is called Bloody Cougar Bone and drops off a named cougar named Midnight. Midnight is black rather than the white of normal snow cougars and is a pretty common spawn around the Tower of Frozen Shadow.

Skin of the Garou can be found on a named spawn named Garou, who appears to be some sort of gnoll effected by lycanthropy.

After handing Balix Misteyes the Skin of the Garou and Bloody Cougar Bone:

Balix Misteyes pulls its lips back as it scratches and cuts the skin, working it around the bloody puma bone. 'Good for hitting or for talisman. Powerful thing to hold. All Snowfang thank you. Now, all of us are safer.'

You receive Garou Bone Club. There are no faction adjustments for turning in this quest.

# Mar 18 2001 at 1:54 AM Rating: Excellent
gnolls hate me, Blackburrow for 8 lvls lol, will this stop me from doing this quest?

Or is this particular gnoll not effected by Blackburrow faction?

Plz, i do not want to spend my time doing this quest only to find out i can't get the item due to faction.
RE: factions?

Gnolls in Velious are NOT blackburrow gnolls. Entirely different faction. You can raise faction by killing Ulthork in EW.
Midnight

Midnight is a very easy kill, he was blue to me at 34. He is like a normal snow cougar. I got the bone, but hearing that Garou is a higher lvl i dont think ill be getting his hide anytime soon. Guess the bone will have to collect dust while i lvl up.
is the skin no drop?

is Garou's Skin no drop? i know the midnight's bone is.

I have heard that killing all the Dire Wolves that you see can get him to spawn, but this has not ben confirmed.

I have killed it before, and I had been killing every dire wolf around. It spawned at night, and I had been quadding wolves for quite some time when I noticed it on tracking and jumped him. A very tough dude to kill, as he is a shaman. I can confirm that he will sometimes heal himself, will cast Scourge (I think that's the name of it) and cold-based DD's, and dropped the garou skin (cap thing) and the 39th cleric spell. The odd thing with this suggestion is that he was running around near Balix and the tower, and the wolves spawn near the coastlines. It is possible that I missed his spawn though, although unlikely since I was checking tracking every time it refreshed.

Therefore, I have a correlation with it spawning at night, and when I was killing wolves, although that doesn't necessarily indicate causation. Can anyone else support that killing wolves makes him spawn?

we got jumped by him the other night, we were only killing cats and shadow thingies and he spawned between the tower and the gnoll outpost...at 32nd he was blood red and killed 5 out of 6 of my group mates...friend logged on his 60th druid and we killed it easily, only dropped the dagger though, nothing else

Garou does not drop the skin everytime. I have helped kill him 2 times and he had it neither time. Once he only had the Dire Wolf Skin and once he had the Dire Wolf Skin and a Fang of Garou. 28 del 9 dam Warrior or Rogue w/ Effect Life Spike. (BIG HINT - Cast a dispell or cancel magic on Garou as soon as possible and your spells will affect him and you will better be able to hit him.)

Death! (for wolf form)

I was running the quest phrases through about Garou the other day, then went off to kill some wolves and such. I usually cast wolf form so I don't have to worry about SoW running out so fast, and I did it in this case. A good while later, I was roaming up near the top of the hill and discovered that Belix doesn't like wolves. I must've ranged within her aggro radius and she wiped me out in very short time. I couldn't even think of gating with all the damage and stuns, and couldn't run away fast enough. She's still red to me at 45th, and I couldn't finish casting snare anyway. If you thought Grimfeather was fast, you need to see this one.

So avoid Wolf Form in this area if you don't want to be wiped from the earth. As far as normal wood elf form, she conned indifferent to me then.

(addendum)

I just read down the list and noted that a fellow posted that wolf doesn't necessarily make you KoS to this shaman. I have to concede the point that it may shift your faction one way or another by a number of points, but in this case it took me down at least 3 levels of faction by shifting form. I started at indifferent, then apprehensive, dubious, glares threateningly or Ready to Attack. I have to think that it must have been the last one since I wasn't that close, so that would make it 4 levels of faction shift in my case.
Enchanters be wary as well

I found out a similiar hindrance myself last night. I play an Enchanter on Prexus and was just a bit encumbered. I decided to use Earth Elemental instead of Strength to alleviate my weight issues, also due to the longevity of it versus Strength. Wasn't thinking as I cast it standing right next to Balix while waiting with my group.

Hail

... i was standing at the tent of the shaman that gives this quest as i saw a group of 35s and 36s trying to kill Garou.

He was yellow to me (lvl 36 SHM). As i saw the first two of the group dying (he hit me once for 81, 81 HP) i began to help to last one of the group with heal and nuked Garou .....
He resiteted all DD of me, i was doing Poison DD and Cold DD on him and did not one point of damage with those spells .... !!!!

Finally we meleed him down, (he healed himself more than once and gated one time) but the one looting said that there was no pelt on the corpse ... ??? !!!!

I dont know if i am too low for this level, but i'd like to see a lvl 34 druid soloing this guy !!!

GAROU is a real beast ... so be prepared if u want this cool Club !!!

First off I would like to thank those adventure seakers out there for the help they supply, and has anyone gotten the lvl 39 Druid spell : Ro's Fiery Sundering : and, If I get this guy taken down, and he has something other than the Druid spell, say the Shammy or Cleric, would anyone think it possible to trade the one I get for my Druid spell I have finally tracked down.

Thank you for your help >^..^<

The spell he dropped for me today was the cleric one. He also dropped the cap/garou skin item as well. He didn't have a wolf pet with him this time, although this is the only time I have even seen this elusive creature. I had been killing the dire wolves hoping this would somehow cause the spawn. It got dark, then while I was root/dotting a wolf he showed up on my tracking. I wish I had written down the time, but I know it was soon after nightfall. The only mobs I had killed were the wolves, so if he is keyed to clearing any particular spawn, it must be those. Otherwise, there may not be any particular mob to kill to make him spawn. It may just be a percentage chance that it happens every nightfall.

As shaman tend to do, he will sometimes heal himself, and will cast Scourge for a dot, plus some cold based spells. Although he resisted my snare a couple of times, he wasn't terribly hard to snare and root as a level 45 druid. I would suggest a regen before engaging to help offset the effects of that Scourge, and some poison and disease resists so that he might be less likely to land the spell on you.

My only complaint is that he dropped the wrong spell, blast it! Was supposed to be the druid one!

I watched a level 51 Elementalist (Magician) and his earth pet try to take on Belix Misteyes for some reason. I am sure that if you don't try new prey, you never find new loot. It may also be possible he had /pet guard up near Belix. In either case, the pet lasted about 30-40 seconds, Belix lost about a fifth of a bubble of health, and the Elementalist hung in there to watch the outcome. Not sure if he could have gated in time, he did not appear to try.

I have heard that in many cases with Velious mobs that if you kill the quest-giver they will sometimes drop the quest item... or a No Drop version of said item anyway.

I heard that too, but also most of the NPCs is seems are way to hard for their lvl. Example The Gnome on the pirate island Joshel(I think) the Large was green to me at 39, think he's lvl 30, quads for 180 a hit!!!! Now thats just not right, what lvl 30 mob can do that?

i killed him this morning, in hopes of finishing this quest. He had his fang (9/28 procs lifespike), and a spell, but not his skin. I was quad kiting cougars to get him and midnight to spawn. and everyone once in a while i would kill some shadow guardians and dire wolves, so Im not sure what his placeholder is.

Ya, I don't know if I'm supposed to kill dire wolves to get him to spawn or just everything in the immediate vicinity of the tower...Please, if anyone knows a post on that would make my day. :)

Hunted Dire Wolves for four hours through day and night cycles (obviously) and never saw Garou appear.

I was hunting Dire Wolves last night for about 4 hours and he popped. Don't know if it was from me killing all the dire wolves in the area or not.

I tried to solo him and failed miserably. He hit in the uppper 90's and casts Shaman spells ( Scourge ). I had to gate out :(

Hope this helps!

RE: What to Say to Belix?

This is what you have to say to Balix Misteyes to start the quest.. only thing i haven't figured out is when and where Garou spawns any info on this would help.

You say, 'hail Balix Misteyes'

Balix Misteyes says 'Outlander, hail. Share the fire. I have little but if you are in need then take what I have. If you need nothing then take nothing. Balix my name is. Shaman to the tribe of Snowfangs.

You say, 'you are a shaman?'

Balix Misteyes says 'Yes. Shaman. I listen to the land to tell my tribe what the winds and waters will bring. Good or bad. Little good and much bad these days. That is why I sit here listening.

Balix Misteyes begins to cast a spell.

You say, 'Listening to what?'

Balix Misteyes says 'I am on spirit quest. No food do I take. All day I listen only. I wait until the land tells me how to help my tribe. Maybe nothing will happen but I cannot fail to try. Hard is this. Many dangerous creatures are near but none come close so far.

Balix Misteyes is surrounded by a brief lupine aura.

You say, 'I will hunt it'

Balix Misteyes says 'If you want to try, you can hunt Garou. If you kill, spread its soul to the air for cleansing, then all is good. Its skin is powerful from the magics that made it. With a cougar's bone, fresh with the spirit of earth, I can make you powerful talisman in thanks for your service to Snowfangs.

Belix Misteyes KOS'ed me today when I approched him about the quest. I was in Wolf form so perhaps thats what I did wrong. I was also on a dire wolves hate list cause it aggro'ed on close to Belix. I am indifferent with the other gnolls in the zone. Not sure If thats w/ or w/o wolf form. What faction is involved with this quest? Well just a warning.

OK so maybe you dr00ds solo too much and never listen to your friendly neighborhood enchanter but here is what NPCs "con".

When you /con a mob you get only two things:
The first is your faction rating, these go from the highest of kindly down to warmly, amiably, indifferent, apprehensive, dubious, threateningly and ready to attack. Threatening and ready to attack are KoS or kill on sight and dubious is not kos but dubious merchants won't transact with you.
The second is a color code and message that relate their level to yours, I won't go into detail on these since it is off subject of this off subject post and it also varies by what your level is but basically green is a lot lower level and red is a lot higher level.

I see posts all the time referencing whether wolf form raises or lowers some faction and it's only ONE form. Rogues can get 3 different forms, Bards can get 4 and enchanters have like a couple dozen at their disposal not to mention all the classes or races who can use sneak behind an NPC to get indifferent faction. Druids (and high level rangers) get one form: wolf. Necros get skeleton form which is primarily a HP to mana spell but is also an illusion for the sake of faction.

Now here is what happens and any enchanter and most bards worth their twist of salt (pun intended) will tell you the same thing. You have a base faction based on your class/race/deity combo with any NPC in the game. This base faction is first adjusted by any faction 'hits' you have taken with them good or bad. Then your faction is adjusted by any form you have. A 'pet' form includes skeleton, water/fire/air/earth pet and wolf along with werewolf and is a major faction drop for most NPCs. The reason that real PCs pets don't get this same effect is that they inherit the same factions as their masters, ask verant why. Enchanters also use spells to change their apparent race along with a spell line which includes benovelence and alliance that just plain raises faction with the target NPC, Bards and Rogues get masks (and a bard instrument for werewolf) that also change ther race appearance and Bards have a song that works similar to benovelence. A different illusion is basically a major adjustment of your faction and doesn't always make or not make you KoS somewhere which is why you will sometimes see an enchanter or bard walking through a place in a form you would expect them to be kos in such as dark elf in kelethin or iksar in firiona vie.

Not to nitpick, but for the sake of accuracy Warmly is above Kindly, making it from highest to lowest: Warmly, Kindly, Amiably, Indifferent, Apprehensive, Dubious, Threateningly, Scowls.

I'm positive of this.

I beg to differ. I hunted in misty thicket for ages and I remember clearly being warmly for a long time and within the past month I got kindly considered after killing a lot of goblins and turning in dfbelts to deputy budo and goblin beads to sherrif roglio. so like the post said before, high to low, kindly then warmly.

Dude you look like a mob when you change form like that. This guy is hunting a wolf? so you look like a wolf, and don't expect to get jumped?

People need to con everything if you are in new territory, this is about as smart as running thru halas in wolf form.

Dont mean to come down on you but that was not smart not conning things.

I hate it when people who dont know what they r talking about have to put in their 2 cents. All though I do agree with the comment about conning every thing. That is always the safest way to get around. If u r busy chassing down a mob u need to pay more attention to what u r doing. As far as wolf form being KOS it has to do with faction, being in an animal form lowers ur faction with all velious mobs but if ur faction is high enough when u change into wolf form or animal illusion for enchanters u will not be KOS. It works like this. All mobs in game con three things(supposedly), faction totals, CHA(supposedly), and racial form. If your faction totals top you up enough with the npc, the npc will NOT kos you in another form that lowers the over all faction. I WAS KOS to Coldain in wolf form, and since others noticed this also, many where saying "oh, wolf form is KOS". Not so. I have killed giants until I am now indiff to Coldain, now I am DUBIOUS in wolf form, so the BASE faction has gone up. I havn't checked this theory with RoK npc's yet, but this does hold true 100% in SoV(I need to go to FV and try wolf form there since I havn't in 6 months and LOTS of goblins since then=)

You have a good point here. I just made a post that I was KOS in wolf form to Belix, but now that you mention this, it does make sense that it is a shift rather than an absolute. If i wolf around the Coldains, it drops me down one level to amiable faction. Here it drops me from indiff to KoS. Obviously with some NPCs, such changes will cause a larger shift in faction than with others. This shaman has an arch enemy named Garou who is a gnoll turned werewolf. It's no wonder that she dislikes wolves.

There is one mob on that isle that likes wolfform. The snow cougars are indifferent without and amiable with wolf to me.

Oh yeh, to Kollins> Druids have 2 forms of illusion, wolf and tree form. I know trees are not mobile, but faction improves with most NPCs. Never tried it with a giant weilding Treeslayer though.
#Anonymous, Posted: Dec 16 2000 at 1:43 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Yeah its all because a bunch of non druids got together and complained up the wazoo to verant saying it was "too powerful" So verant decided to ***** us druids and thats the story.
#Anonymous, Posted: Jan 08 2001 at 10:25 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Quit crying. In case you haven't noticed, any enchanter who did not have the forsight to choose agnostic faction cannot use their illusions to go to places they wouldn't normally be able to do, thus making those illusions worthless for the purpose of "travelling". If someone wants to ***** about their illusion not working and being screwed, it sure as hell shouldn't be droods.
RE: Forms

Oh, please. "***** us druids"? How vain can you be? All monster illusions are kos. Save the "us poor druids" whine because it's just bs. It makes more sense for npcs to be agro to these forms. After all, you now look like a monster, so why wouldn't they hate you? And except for Plane of Growth and the faun area of Wakening Land, wolf form is kos in all expansion zones.
That's the story.
RE: Forms
# Apr 26 2001 at 11:24 PM Rating: Decent
Actually, Wolf Form improves the faction of many mobs. Most animals (including cougars, btw, though not dire wolves) will go indifferent to you in wolf form. Many humoids (such as the gnolls outside of Splitpaw) may also go dubious or indifferent. But other mobs will go from non-KoS to KoS. Its a trade-off, really.

The fact that it doesn't help much in Velious does indeed suck somewhat, but whatever. Its not worth griping about, that's for sure. Just keep track of what's KoS to you in wolf form and keep away from those things.

Wow, Shaman wolf pets aren't KS though. Go figure.

Elemental pets are KOS in Cabilis (sp?) no matter what your faction is.
I'm guessing this isn't so for shaman pets though.

Umm, I have gone into the Dorf city and used wolf form, and they didn't kill me. Seems the guy talking about multi-part faction is true... wolf does lower my faction to dubious in Thurgadin, but not KOS.

how did you become a wolf in the coldain city? ITS INDOORS!

Personal Pets aren't KOS true - maybe becuase they are pets. They have a little sign around there neck saying "property of." Plus many of thier friends or supieors have pets - not to many know talking elementals.

Course if a wolf or werewolf ran into a city the guards would not be too happy about it - you migh have better luck if you ask them to not kill you as you really are a humanoid :)
Garou
# Dec 14 2000 at 3:31 AM Rating: Decent
Garou is a random spawn that appears near the Tower of Frozen Shadow. My partner said that she saw him today, and we were about to kill him, but she went linkdead. Presumably he is about level 32, but she also said that he killed her and a necro when they tried to kill him the previous day.
Level?

I am a lvl 40 Necro. Garou was a cinch. He does have around 2500 HP I suspect. He resisted none of my spells. Darkness, feared, DoTd him with pet bashing him from behind he died easily but took 60% of my mana to do it. He never hit me so I can't offer a guess on what he damages for. He did NOT drop the skin curse his soul!

He was blue to me at 50, and took all my mana to kill. He casts shaman spells too, so he heals.

The last two times I saw Garou, I had seen groups killing Shadow Guardians. In fact, the group had to fight both Garou and a Shadow Guardian, lending to their untimely defeat I suppose. I was passing through and did not see where Garou went after the party fled.

I have been killing dire wolves so far, since Garou supposedly drops a dire wolf pelt..too bad it's of no avail yet...

thougts on Garou spawn
# Dec 21 2000 at 10:38 PM Rating: Default
Ok, so here is the question of the day.

Is there anyway to get Garou to spawn ?

I have been looking for him for about 5 days now. Im a druid, so i can track, at level 34 ive been kiting Cougars and Dire wolves. I spent about 6 hours today kiting Dire Wolves alone because someone said "Dire wolves MIGHT be the Place holder for Garou."
Ive been focusing my hunt on "Tower island," but i have checked out "dock island," and "bridge island" as well.

Someone mentioned to me that you might have to kill one of the Gnolls since Garou looks like a lycantrop gnoll.

I killed midnight 3 levels ago, so im anxious to get this silly quest finished

Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I have not seen Garou. However a trusted wood elf friend (Webre) was attacked by Garou two nights ago while in a group of six. They report that Garou popped by the tent at the base of the tower. Garou took out most of the level 34-38 group, healed himself, knocked off SoW, tried to root, gated and hit very hard. The 34 druid was able to ensnare him but mana and health ran out for the group before they could defeat Garou (they were down a bit from previous battle). They report that when he gated, he reappeared at the tent, reinforcing the theory that this is his usual spawn point.

do you mean the tent near the gnoll camp, or Balix mysteye's tent.
Because i have also heard that he spawns near the EAST side of the tower in the field.

I personally belive that with Velious they made it so that mobs don't "Pop" in one particular spot all the time.

Not sure though

Ok,i am going to put all this guessing and wishful thinking to rest, with velious verant employed an anti camping concept that so far seems to work pretty well,in order to get a rare to spawn, you have to lets it's placeholders LIVE,yep you heard me,you can't kill them.when they run out their cycle they'll despawn and pop the rare making it VERY difficult for people to camp and farm.you can run around killing things all day in Velious to get rares to spawn but if you do i suspect that you'll never even see a rare

Following that theory... what about the single shadow guardian that pops sometimes called "swirling icestorm" or something like that. It's just like the other guardians except it has more hps and casts some lame-o ice dd. Never drops anything other than normal snow dervish loot. Maybe letting this icestorm "de-pop" will get Garou to spawn, if it is indeed some sort of PH.
RE: thougts on Garou spawn
# Feb 05 2001 at 8:37 PM Rating: Default
Doubtful. The swirling Icestorm dropped a Frozen Mantle (AC 8 Mana 10). The spawns are probably not related.

It would seem that Garou is not a triggered spawn at all. If anything is his trigger, it's Midnight, the panther. Garou popped immediately after I killed the black panther. By "popped" I mean "appeared on my track list". I have no way of knowing how long he'd actually been up.

Even IF Midnight is the trigger, he clearly does not spawn Garou. More likely though, Garou is just another camp.

I also have been a part of killing Garou. 3 times he has popped while i was camping him in the past 3 weeks. All 3 times he died. The first time i died 4 times before he did. I have called back up every time due to being lvl 34-35-36. The one thing i did notice (prior to reading any post about it) is that he spawned all 3 times immediatly after the Midnight showed up. I was so sure of it that after camping Garou for 8 hours today the Midnight popped, and i immediatly called on guild help. I had 2 lvl 50's on hold for an hour and no pop this time. But i am still sure that the Midnight is directly related to the spawn. How.... I dont know. But 3 times garou and all 3 times midnight just prior..... not just chance if you sit there for 11 hours and never see a midnight on that island. Note... I was totaly convinced of the Midnight theory prior to reading ANY posts. My guild thought i was a fool tho. Grin must be.... a lvl 35 camping a lvl 43 spawn for 3 weeks straight. Go figure. But i have paid well to make sure he did not live while i was on watch.

I dont think Garou is a triggered spawn, I was exploring with my druid friend earlier today, who said to keep an eye out for him. I was pulling a snow cougar on the off chance that it had an earing, and Garou popped out of no where and attacked me. He put up a real fight my 44 druid partner charmed the cougar who was beating on him the whole time, nuking the heck out of Garou, and I was tanking and meleeing (46 paladin) after I was about 500/1500 hp Garou tried to gate and run, we killed him before he could, but all he dropped was some 9/28 lifetap piercer and a cleric spell.

I had just finished talking to Belix and Garou jumped me. I'm a 47 necro and he was no fight but only dropped a fang. I never did see him spawn again.

wouldn't it be funny if all you had to do to get him to spawn was talk to balix...

Tried that. no effect. Talked to every gnoll that would respond. no effect. specifically asked them dozens of variations on "Where is Garou" "Find Garou" "Have you seen Garou" and so forth. no effect.

But I'll keep trying.
