Me and a full group where hunting Cougars when one of the patrolling sentrys aggro on us for some reason. He hits pretty hard since i was only lvl 27 at the time, luckily we had 2 sham and a cleric in our group. We killed him and got his cape, 6ac 10agi, not to shabby, since im still wearing my banded one :(

If they wander to close to you while you have a area affect spell in progress they will agro. Found this one out personally.
I'm going to take a wild guess here and say that you also had a druid who decided, for a larf, that he'd try out his new wolf-form spell to aid in pulling. The pirates aggro on wolf-form druids, as we discovered yesterday.
As a general rule, you should always avoid going wolf-form around *any* guards, regardless of their normal feelings for you. A lot of them will go nuts and insta-kill you, leaving you with a rather embarrassing CR.
