the froglok shin lord

a rare creature

The Shin Lord is a Paladin (a fact which many Paladins after Ghoulbane find a bit odd), he can lay hands and is without a doubt the toughest fight in Upper Guk.

The sword is a rare drop.

To get your UpperGuk faction back you can kill Rungupp in SW Toxx forest or any number of Undead Frogloks in Lower Guk. If you are low level like me and don't particulary enjoy the trip to LGuk with KOS froggies, Rungupp is the answer.

I know I'm not a pally, but I helped a pally camp this item and now all of the wizzie quest items in this zone are monumentally more difficult for me to get with bad faction (Froglok Scryer Mask, for example).

The Shin lord spawns in the lower part of upper guk, near the fungi room, its difficult to describe where his room is, but from the fungi room, face away from the fungus mutant's spawnpoint, go past the pillar with a fungus in front of it, take a right, cross the plank, go around the stone wall, head towards the "bar" and take a right...then take the second left, you're there, he spawns underneath the torch within, his PHs are the shin warrior, shin knight, and Tal shaman. His room is rather difficult to break if you have a group level 20ish or so, but still dooable with a snarer and an enchanter. The lord will wield the ghoulbane if he has it(on occasion he wields a lower delay rusty or fine steel weapon as well, don't lose hope if you see him wielding a rusty weapon), his common drop is a silver plated bracer(nice for resist gear) and his rare is of course the famed and legendary ghoulbane, a very nice weapon for high level 20ish to level 40ish paladins, and also used for the shadowknight epic quest.

How in the name of Gawd do you make this guy spawn. I, a lvl 31 Wiz, a lvl 34 Warrior, and lvl 35 Pally camped the whole cirle for about 4 hours...no Shin Lord. We saw Tan Shamans, and Van Shamans...are these placeholders? We cleared out the place everytime...any ideas. Please e-mail me at jon.lee@mail.com for information!

I'm a level 27 Pally who camped this guy last night with a lvl 37 War and lvl 45 Ranger. Killed every friggin froglok in sight including several with shin name. Not one Shin Lord spawn for over 4 hours. Then too boot we lost the Ranger on the way out and the War and me got trained and gang banged dead on the way out. I'll be back though.

HE spawns at random. SOmetimes days, and sometimes back to back. THe sword is random drop too. Sometimes twice in a row, sometimes never. I and my fellow guild members raided Guk this morning for about 3 hours. He spawned 2 times in 30 mins and dropped a ghoulbane both times. Needless to say, we were blessed

There is an easy, never fail way to make any rare spawn pop.

Go on full mana burn, get completely OOM, let tanks get to about 50% life and them have 2 people go AFK. It always works, the rare WILL pop while they are AFK and WILL kill you.

It works even better if you can let a few surrounding spawns fill up so you have adds available in case you somehow manage to get it to run.

ROFL. That's about it, too. It's better if it happens to the group ahead of you if you're in next in line to camp the rare spawn, though. *grin*

Can a lvl 36 Paly solo the Shin Lord?
RE: Shin Lord
# Jan 25 2001 at 3:27 AM Rating: Good
He has LoH. He chain heals himself when he gets low. He has lots of friends. And I've heard that he can proc the GB on PC's even though we're not undead (I was kinda too busy at the time to notice).

34 warrior, 34 shaman with blue pet, and 35 shaman with blue pet (all three pets including myself fully buffed) ended a fight with a GB wielding lord (and three or four other low-blue/high-green frogs who popped at a bad time and/or ran in from the other room) oom and lohp. We all survived, including the pets...but it was best described as "exciting". Consider it a five person group with three mid-30's and two (expendable yet reliable) high-20's and ask yourself: does it really matter whether you can solo the lord by himself, when pallies can't mez?

A general rule I've found is that you can "do" a dungeon camp five levels earlier in a pair than solo, five earlier with four than two, and five earlier with six than four (no doubt that's a very rough rule full of exceptions). Yes, the same camp that a level 40 solo would find difficult yet possible (and I mean keeping the area clear of greenie aggro and non-aggro healers, not just killing ph's) could be difficult yet possible to a full group of 25's. If you're really experienced and careful, you could probably do it with just one same-level friend (note that we didn't qualify, since it was our first time there for each of us, and we probably suffered from greenie aggro from the next room when the pets attacked something too close to the wall); if you'll be relying on sheer brute force like we did, you should bring three friends (or two friends and two pets) just in case. :)

Hello,

I am certain that I could solo the shin lord room spawn.... I was there with friends just to be doing something and killed the lord at least 4 times only had GB once and dropped silver plated bracers the rest of the time and actally faked us all out by dropping a rusty sword give me a break...hehehe... I would wait till I was at least 39 for the 36 pally that way you will have your self only regen.. its not bad... and solo away...

well i didnt have to worry about all this paladin against paladin stuff. I just camped him with my druid lvl 48. It was not easy but it is soloable. The first 2 times i went i could not find the thing even with a loc. Then i went on the internet and got a map. The next 2 times i went i was invised and the shin lord saw through it, i had to gate out to survive. Then i figured out that if you enter the shin lord room and stay against the wall, you can root and kill any 1 of the 3 mobs in that room, including the shin lord. I would suggest killing the shamans first. His CH is hard enough to deal with, the added healing of the shamans makes it too tough. Finally i figured out how to camp him and i ended up getting the GB on the second drop, just lucky i guess. I also got the gold ring for the paw quest on the second drop...i think Guk likes me :)

I hate when people do stuff like that. Pretending that 5oopp is a lotof money and ripping off a newbie. Ripping off 50+ chars is just plain funny though hehe. I bought a froglock crown for 500pp a few days ago, and I decided I really didn't need it so i auctioned it. A 52 ranger gives me a tell and I told him to offer and he offered 1000pp. I eagerly accepted and was surprised there were 50+ people that were stupid. hehe

Irreversible faction hit?
# Aug 30 2000 at 4:39 AM Rating: Default
Some say it is like killing Lucan, others say they have managed to get up to neutral faction again.

My story is I have managed to raise my faction to threatening, but no further yet. I think I have been credited with enough faction to raise to dubios, but I dont know if I must kill hundreds or thousands ghouls in LGuk.
I FINALY got dubious to frogloks and I killed Lord 3 times
# Mar 23 2001 at 4:36 AM Rating: Default
I was scowled (worst faction), managed to raise to threatening only to get back to scowl.

After spending 13 levels in LGuk killing god knows how many ghouls I am dubious.

I have left Guk, but if I go back I will not lay hand on a live frog unless they are indifferent to me.

Be aware that turning this faction around is a major pain. It can be done I succseeded 2001-03-23.
Shrug it was easy for me
# Apr 06 2001 at 6:37 AM Rating: Default
I fought in LGuk before ever fighting the live frogs because I wanted to have an easier time getting my faction good.. I fought a LOT on the dead side and got myself up to warmly without killing any live frogs.. (i'd say probably took over 48 hours playing time tho) Now I went up to upper to be a loot farmer lol, I camped the shin lord, the scryer, AND the squire (who i never got to see tho) for bout 5 hours, killed the lord twice (no ghoulbane *sigh*) and I'm still at kindly faction.
NODROP

If Ghoulbane was made NODROP, it would put an end to campers and KS'ers... Only paladins can use.
#Anonymous, Posted: Dec 09 2000 at 3:59 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Think before you talk, dude. If you make the GB no Drop, then there would be a TON more campers, and with the new SK Epic Quest (Which requires GB), it would be camped 24/7. So it is better this way. And do everyone a favor - Think before you speak
RE: NODROP--count noses plz
# Aug 07 2001 at 3:21 PM Rating: Default
This is an old post but I just couldn't let that pass. Make it No Drop and there will be more people camping it? I suppose you're thinking people would have to come camp it themselves ONCE instead of paying some farmer. But...would that mean more people or less? The AC spawn just became useless to all but those two classes--80% of the players. So the farmers stop coming.

The question is, would you gain more Pal/SK coming in to do it themselves than you would lose farmers? Human nature is tricky, but it boils down to the question--Are there more greedy players on any given server than there are Pal/SK? I know which side of that question I'd put my money on.

It certainly would NOT put an end to campers. Now, with a NODROP Ghoulbane, you can't buy it...EVERY SINGLE PALADIN has to come camp it himself....No thank you
RE: NODROP
# Oct 15 2000 at 11:49 AM Rating: Default
Impossible now. Ghoulbane is now part of the epic shadowknight quest. Expect to see very high level SKs camping it.
Just an idea
# Aug 14 2000 at 6:02 PM Rating: Decent
With all this talk about how Verant should fix this quest to foil the campers, I thought of an idea. Why not make the GB a quest item like some of the Temple of Solusek RO quests. Bring a component that the Shin Lord drops, and get a Ghoulbane. But, the GB will only be given to Paladins. And if the component is No Drop, then no farmers would want it. GB could still be sellable, but it would only be paladin's selling it, because they are the only ones who could have completed the quest.

I'm a druid, so I get a lot of flack because we are supposedly the worst campers. I do think however that there could be very easy fixes for these quests. The same thing would work for the fungus mutant (paw of Opalla quest) the stuff he drops could be no drop, and the kerran who trades for the rings could only give em to WIS based people who could actually use the paw.

Just an idea, that I know won't really change anything, but would help if it could.

Moral Dilemma
# Aug 14 2000 at 5:36 PM Rating: Excellent
Note to Senelyen - The Shin Lord fights down in Lower Guk when nobody's looking =).

On a more serious note, I think Verant should make Ghoulbane a quest as well as a drop. You can either kill the Shin Lord, or you can show your loyalty to Brell and the general cause of good by destroying the Shin Lord's arch enemy and bringing proof of the deed. Who's his arch enemy? Why the Ghoul Lord, of course! And what proof does he want? You guessed it, it's sword for sword , my friends - bring him the Ykesha, and he forks over Ghoulbane.

Now I know you're saying, "Who the hell would trade in a Ykesha for a GB??" Well, on Erollisi, GB sells for about 4-5kpp, while a Yak sells for about 3-4kpp. Not a bad trade, money-wise. Yes it's much more difficult to camp the Ghoul Lord, but some of us DO like to RP, despite the hardships of trying =).

Maybe a little incentive would make people more willing to go for the Yak trade-in offer, let's say the sword you get for trading in a Yak has an extra point of damage or two, a lesser delay, or maybe a few charges of complete healing (which can be refilled by handing in the drained GB and a Skull Shaped Barbute to the Shin Lord).

Anywho, I'm an RP nut, so nyah! =)

Oh, and one last note to Buddy X - Brother Gentry is a Cleric, not a Paladin. He casts Complete Healing, not Lay on Hands.
RE: Moral Dilemma
# Aug 15 2001 at 10:43 AM Rating: Default
To reply to your more serious note, it is a quest too. It starts in West Karana, theres a human standing on the side of the river. you talk to him and he gives you a note you take it to a dwarf in butcherblock and it goes on from there. Yours is an old post so i am not sure when they added it but the quest seems much easier than campin the frog for the ghoulbane.
#Anonymous, Posted: Nov 13 2000 at 11:32 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Wow, did you say 4-5kpp for GB? It goes for maybe 1800pp on cazic thule tops, are you sure that isn't the weed telling you that?
#Anonymous, Posted: Apr 21 2001 at 4:38 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) why do you guys keep complaining on and on. quest item, trade ykesha for GB, kill "arch enemy"... its NEVER gonna happen, verant wants to get our asses up and camp the shin lord for months until we get GB, so we have to pay more as we will be inspired with our GB (at lvl 45 cause we camped shin lord for about a year) to get to 60 which will take even longer, therefore expiring more months of paying online gaming.

Moral Dilemma
# Jul 07 2000 at 8:05 AM Rating: Excellent
I have read a lot about various paladin's moral objections to obtaining a GB and frankly from a roleplaying perspective, they don't make much sense. So what if the shin lord is a paladin? Does that make him my drinking buddy? I think not.

Everquest has a multi-god or "pantheon" religious system, much like ancient Rome or Greece. These gods don't always get along, and each have their own followers and agendas. The shin lord may be a follower of a god, but he is not a follower of my god, and my god loves me and wants me to be strong to do her work. I may just be rationalizing, but that is always how I have dealt with the question with my character.

And as for the argument that the GB is the only hope for the froglok's war on the undead in lower Guk, well all this shin lord seems to do is sit in his chambers and brood. He is nowhere near the battle. I took the GB from this cringing coward and used it in lower guk. I don't expect the frogs to love me for doing his work for him, but at least I am doing something other than sitting on my butt with a big group of toadies (pun intended) ooh-ing and ahh-ing over an un-utilized holy sword.
RE: Moral Dilemma
# Sep 11 2000 at 12:43 PM Rating: Default
Amen to that. That is EQ's largest fault. That someone like him you should see in lower guk getting his *** handed to him by the undead. If he won't use that darn thing, i'll kill him, and use it myself. :)
RE: Moral Dilemma
# Nov 12 2000 at 9:24 AM Rating: Default
Preach on! .. perhaps someday I can get my hands on this blessed blade.. and certainly, I'll have no moral qualms about slaughtering a toad who sits on his rear surrounded by guards for it. Karana's servant waits for no froggie! Besides, if the frogloks really want to wipe out undead, they should just give Ghoulbane to the undead in the middle of the rest, and then watch people slaughter their way to the new mob who drops it. :D

- a disgruntled paladin, still without her Ghoulbane

PS - EQ's largest fault is actually making the set of banded armor I used to wear look like fishnet and a metal bikini that would inflict damage on bare flesh, but I digress.
