Classes: The Monk

Monks - masters of hand to hand damage. The monk is a powerful fighting class. With their unique set of skills and need to keep their weight load down, monks are a very complex class to develop and play correctly.

What is the best way to develop your monk? Which skills should the monk concentrate on learning? What is the best fighting style for a monk? Can a monk be soloed, and if so how? How should a monk be played within a group? How can a monk best use his skills? What weapons and armor should you try to get for your monk?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Monk and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

I'm going to make a monk, and I have 3 main questions:

1. What race is best to be a monk.
2. How should I spend my bonus stats when making my character.
3. What stat bonuses should I look for when i'm buying my equipment.

I'll most likely be starting with Polished Steel Ulaks if I can find some for a decent price.

1. Humans have generally 'okay' faction, Iksar's get AC and regen bonuses. hopefully the choice is obvious :-)

2. spread out your stats amongst str/sta/agi/dex to make a balanced char. being extremely high in 1 stat while being low in the others isn't much good.

3. any and all melee stats (including ac and hp) are nice, but pay attention to weight. you get an AC bonus for being under a certain weight (level dependant)

1) In the old days, it wasn't kosher to say that Iksar made the best Monks. And it was probably a draw back then. However, since the introduction of Luclin, PoK, GoD and OoW as the Main zones in the game, faction has very little meaning for the average player.

So today, I would say that for pure effectiveness, the better vision, better regeneration and the AC-bonus Iksar get, probably make them the supperior Monk.

Having said that, I sometimes wish I could go back and make my Iksar into a human...I just think they look nicer as a Monk.

2) I am going to have to disagree with you, Arnach. Most Monks tend to agree, that the way to go is STA all the way. DEX and AGI actually do very little, and while STR does add a tiny bit of *Oomph*, the issue for Monks from the mid-levels and up, is that we start having a hard time surviving. Thus anything and everything that adds Hitpoints is worth its weight in Gold. And STR-gear tends to be pretty abundant at any level, whereas STA is quite a bit rarer.

3) Raw hitpoints first, then STA, and then AC (See #2 above). It's all about staying alive. Resists are nice too, but not at the cost of Hitpoints. Also, if you look for the gear with the highest Hitpoints, you'll tend to find that it has bunches of other stats too, so stats will come gradually.

And yes...stay below your level-based weight-cap, if at all possible (and it should be)

1. Vision
These days with the ability to adjust the birghtness, and the changes made to how well Humans and Barbarians see in the dark there is very little draw back to being a nonnightvision race.

2. Regeneration
The "Better Regeneration" is only active while sitting. Since everyone now get a sitting regeneration far better than anything Iksar used to get, there is very little advantage here as well. Furthermore you can now bind wounds up to 70% thus your down time is much more a function of your bind wounds skills than your natural regen rate.

3. AC bonus
Here there is some advantage. However the much larger factor is the quality of gear you can afford to buy.

In todays EQ on most servers, if you don't have a group of friends starting new toons you will have to spend the majority of your time soloing pre lvl 50 or so. While it is true that there is plenty of content where faction isn't a factor, most of the content that is soloable for monks is prekunark, and faction becomes an issue. So faction can make the life of a young monk more challanging but not to the point that it becomes impossable.

In the end look at the starting stats and at which race you might enjoy playing the most. There really isn't enough differance between the two races to make a noticable impact.

Monks more than most other melee classes are judge more by their ability to pull and ability to do damage. Since in a group setting they rarely tank armor etc is less important. The key to being a good monk is to develop your pulling ability, and being able to surive long enough to get the pull back to the ambush.

May I piggyback on this thread? I, too, have a new monk. He's my second monk. I deleted my first over four years ago, but playing most characters is totally different now, and I'm revisiting classes I rejected earlier.

Anyway, I once saw a summary of monk fist damage/delay figures per level. Does anyone know where that could be found now, and if it's still valid.

Also, I can't get the class site link to work. What are some good monk sites I can visit for guidance?

Thanks for the help.
