I have a 67 necro.. she is awesome at this level. But, the pet on em still kind of sucks compared to how hard a mob can hit. So I have decided to try my hand at a mage.. :)
So far.. I kind of like it. :)

Not realy, mages are fine.

mages are just a challenging class

Mages are NOT a challenging class compared to many others.
They are fairly easy to play. imho

and

Mages are verry wanted in xp grind groups.
Gues you never saw..since you didnt even pass 60 yet.

and whats this about never being wanted in groups

2 words: HA en HA (would make haha)
Warior can tank WAY better.
Infact..in group situations mage pet CANT tank.
Since a mob wil ALWAYS go for a player character when hes in range instead of the pet.
They can OFFtank in a pinch.
But this also ends in the later game.

Necros are considerd verry powerfull.
They once did a poll here on alla.
Wich class whas the most powerfull.
I can tell you the mage whas no where near the top 3.

jeez get to higher lvls first b4 adding your mighty wisdom.
Lots of class defining abilitys whill not come into the light until later lvls.
And why are you askin why necros are great on a mageboard?

Anyways.
I like mages, there great in xp grind groups.
In raids you whill be CoTH dude alot.wich can get boring.
I dont think mages have alot to worry about calls-ballancing wise.
I take a mage in my group anytime.

Bfeyter do you ever have anything of use to say? All I have ever seen you do is B%^&* at Newbies for having opinions on their class. You come in a tell them their idiots because at "the end of the game" this or that. The End of the game is months or years away for them. So get bend

Also look at when this post started 2001 three freakin' years ago. At that time he was high end of the game.

Had about the same usefullness to say as you have here.
Anyway.
I wont qoute again but if you read the last part

MAGES ARE FINE.
I would group with them at any lvl.
They are fine dps (not the best...but not the worse either)
They have something in the form of support.
Summonin items for water breath ,lev,CotH, pet toys, etc, etc,

All i whas saying that some1 that wants to start a mage should not get discouraged by what these guys say here.
Cause its crap....nothin usefull here.
Common what can you say about a class at lvl 7.
At lvl 7 there is not much diffrence to alot of classes.
I am not ******** because there noobs.
If i didnt want to help newerguys i wouldnt post anything.
I critize there posts, so people who read it dont get a wrong idea about mages.

And i whas not the one to wakin up this post.

Just my two cents worth :)

my first post so here goes...I have a 67 Necro So I have a little experience in the dealings of death and aggro management.I also have a 29 Mag that I am thoroghly enjoying as well . For those who are ragging on Mag's..get over it. they are a fun class with alot of abilities to add strength to any group.debuffing, dps, as well as gear for all..At 67 My necro still cheers at Having a Mag in the group to summon a nice Steele Bracelet with Burning Affliction4 on it..My dotts go from 430 per tic to 860 per tic...If that aint useful I cant imagine what is(spell:Horror)..as for Having Mobs take the player over the pet...so far ,my Earth pet cures that with its constant rooting...I guess in closing..I think you are either a melee lover or a caster at heart..Learn to play your class well with the help of advise from all that care to give it,and use what seems to help you

there is some form of difficulty about playing a mage as there is with any caster, that difficulty is knowing how to do what you do in the group WITHOUT gettign agro, a feature less common these days. i can somewhat understand wizzies getting agro seeing as they can nuke for 5k, but that can still mean a group wipe, or wasted cleric mana.

now about the grouping thing, i have a 59 mage, my main, and i spend 3-4 hours lfg before i give up. my friend has a 59 mage alt and has the same problem. now most of you would say "if ya can't get a group go solo" and my response to that is Dooke solo= Dooke needs a rez. i stopped soloing at lvl 7... kind of stupid but hey we all make mistakes. but i have a good feeling that the reason i can not get a group is the fact that who in their right mind would want to group with a guy named Dooke Steamsincold? either way i'm up a creek without a paddle... but i like thje bazaar, it's cozey

Anyone who thinks that the mage pet can't tank well has rocks in their heads! I do Ldons with a mage and 2 clerics regularly and never do they last longer than half the time limit. Sometimes we add other classes but they aren't allowed to melee. Rangers and warriors can cast if they can and use their bows but that's it unless we add a necro who sometimes pulls aggro on one mob, then they off-tank. Otherwise mage pet tanks 4+ mobs at a time. Great fun and Fast AA's.

BTW I play both a Cleric and a Mage

I have but one character, a level 62 mage. I don't play very often because I don't have the time. Most of the time, I solo because I do have a tough time getting into groups. However, I am a member of a very good guild that welcome me into their groups all the time.

I have found that soloing a mage works quite well because of my pet. My favorite is my earth pet because he's always casting root, which stops a mob from aggroing on me. The other pets are no where near as good in this area. Unfortunately, I always want to use my most powerful pet, which means I'm currently not using an earth pet. I think I get my next earth pet next level.

One area of having a mage that hasn't been addressed hardly is a mages ability to summon items. For the past several levels, I've been sitting in the Bazaar selling summoned items. I have a lot of time to do this because it doesn't require my full attention light fighting does. Plus, I can leave my character in the Bazaar all night long and get on in the morning to see how much I made. For the most part, I make between 2,500 and 7,500 plat per day. My most popular selling items are the Hand of Ixiblat, Blade of Walnan, Belt of Magi'Kot and Muzzle of Mardu. My enhancement summons are popular too, but unfortunately, most of them are lore items and so you can only have one of them in your inventory.

I also use the plat I make to buy other things at low prices, then sell them for a profit. I'm always keeping an eye out for real good items at a reasonable price to better outfit my mage.

One final point about my mage... As a mage gets into their upper levels, the best place to get their new spells is in the Bazaar. But be careful, the prices bounce all over the board. So take your time and you'll find most of the spells you need at a resonable price. I just wish all the mages spells were available in the Bazaar, but they're not. A few spells I really want can only be had by grouping up with others in LDoN's and such.

Oh yea, I forgot to say, the Mage's Epic is real time consuming and difficult. But if you're in a good guild with lots of upper level players, it's a heck of a lot easier.

The mage is one of the most complex classes in the game. You will hear different from some people but that is because they are not using the class to it's full ability. Sure you can go out and nuke everything in site and use your pet to keep the mobs off of you and to most this would seem like a very simple class. This is not the way to play a mage. If this is how you like to play, get yourself a friend who has a warrior and make yourself a wizzy. A mage has many small qualities that even I am still trying to learn.

As far as grouping goes, it depends on the player, not the toon. You can have the most uber warrior in the game tanking for you but if he doesnt know how to play, chances are, you are going to die. I like the fact that I can tell my tank exactly what to do and he does it with out a complaint. There are a lot of mages out there in the world who still think they are tank equiped wizzys. WE ARE NOT WIZARDS. Would you play a bard like a warrior? Than why do some mages play like they are a wizzy. Learn the small parts first. Sit in a group and cast no more than 1 nuke (doesnt have to be the biggest nuke in your spellbook) per mob. Spend the rest of your time helping out others. Got a ranger in the group? /g anyone need some arrows?
Got a necro or beastie in the group? /g want pet toys?
got a cleric or enchanter in the group? Need focus items?
Also, the mage DS are great. I have learned that even though I have the ability to nuke like crazy, I dont have to. I have one of the best DOTs the game has. Its called an elemental pet. We are one of the few classes who can cast one DOT spell and have it keep going from one mob to the next. I have no problems finding a group due to these ways of playing and I have a list of warriors and clerics who seek me out for groups all the time. When I first started my mage, it was hard to find groups. This was because I didnt know how to play the class properly. Now, I have groups all the time. I have a hot key set up for medding. It says "medding like a good little mage...but my mudpie still kickin up some dust." Not only does this get a little chuckle but also very seldom does anyone have a problem with me just sittin around. Why? Because I am still doing damage and, if things get hairy, I will have the mana needed to nuke like crazy when trained. Was in a group the other day and we got trained w/ 8 mobs. The cleric of the group told everyone to zone. I stood up and said no. Casted Boon DS on entire group and proceded to nuke everything in site. We had 2 tanks and my pet. In about 5 mins, every mob dead and no group members had died. Sure, we do have the ability to blow everyhing up, but we must also have the wits about us to keep that mana for when it is needed.

Anyway, that is my little rant. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I dont expect everyone to be the same mage however if you are having a hard time finding a group, maybe you should change you tactics when you do get groups so you can gain a name for yourself and get in groups when ever you want

Nice post. As i sit here bored, reading these all i can think is wow. I realize everyone has their own opinion about classes and crap like that and that everyone thinks their class is the best(maybe not true) But let me vent about my class. the omens update imho is the best thing to happen to a mage since eq came out. lets look at what it did for us. level 66 gives you a pet that allows you to easily duo WoS with only a decent druid grouped with you. DUO WOS = MAD EXP! second at level 66 we get a disgusting nuke. i am level 69 and my highest crit without a bard there is 6954 (i have all my crit and destructive fury aa that i can get so real results may vary) that is just sick. i forget what wizzys used to nuke for prior to omens but it was around there. also at 69 we get an awesome pet buff which turns him (or her) into a mean little sonofabatch. hits for 108 and stuff like that, awesome. At 68 we get a ds the hits for 400 plus a hit only last for afew hits but still cast that on tank on the pull, it is zero aggro and will help in the kill. also ever been in a stationary group without a fd puller. well coh = poor mans feign death instant aggro drop. was in mpg the other day and our wizy went to scout ahead and i saw his health dropping fast, a quick coh(if there is such a thing) right as he came around the corner the mob stopped because we were just out of aggro range and pathed back $$. so what am i saying? All you young mages out there who are unsure about your class keep at it. all you expirienced (sp) mages out there you know what to do. also do i even need to bring up the fact that i can single pull ANYTHING in the game. this outlines just how bad *** a good mage can be. we are now an absolutely awesome class. ok well my rant is over gonna go kill **** now.

Don't Diss our class!

IMO, Mages ARE hard to play, as a 62 mage on Rodcet Nife, with all the Quellious people, we'd thought it would be easy to get a group.. I THINK NOT! The only groups i get is with my friends, or maybe i get lucky while summoning pet kits at PoK with LFG and /oocing it once in a while and i get a group in BoT. For all you discouraged mages out there, WAIT UNTIL 60!! Once you're 60 your 50's are gone! No more suffering! Hooray, and plus, I've seen an enchanter. They make the freaking most money EVER, and they have such a easy class. They basically have everything imaginable except our summoning. So stop dissing our class and get off our mage place, go run away to your little hut.

In some way any class can make money. If a person's main character is an enchanter and they were not PL babysat to 60... that took effort and possibly a lot of deaths (especially if they learned the game as a chanter... this = Loading Please Wait).

If a single account user (multi-boxers are a different beast) wants to sit in POK and cast KEI for hours... sure they can make money. Not the most exciting past time (having tried it). I only used cast KEI in pok when 1. people were asking like mad 2. when I was not doing anything fun and was dirt poor... as most people kindly donate for your time.

A mage (the topic of this thread) can make some plat summoning if they want. They are a better solo class for the vast majority of players than an enchanter. I would say they play very differently and would suit different player's needs/desires.
