  • At the end of the previous quest, Betti Frostweaver told you to show your Embroidered Coldain Prayer Shawl to Gilthan.

Gilthan Brittleblade says 'So, you've been chosen to attempt the rune, eh? Been ages since anyone's even made an attempt. The rune represents the very essence of our people, our culture, and our religion. Take a sea shell runed with enduring breath and a small brick of velium and grind them together in a mortar and pestle. Add water to the powder and model the rune. Fire the rune with water and the best of firing sheets. Show the product to Trademaster Kroven.'

  • Head off to Siren's Grotto and kill Sirens until you get a Runed Sea Shell with one charge of Enduring Breath.

  • Combine the Sea Shell and a small brick of velium in a Mortar and Pestle (if you are a rogue) or in a Mixing Bowl (any class) to get an Enchanted Velium Powder (No-Fail Combine).

  • Now combine the Enchanted Velium Powder and a Water Flask in a pottery wheel to get an Unfired Rune (Pottery Trivial 162).

  • Combine the Unfired Rune with a High Quality Firing Sheet and Water Flask in a kiln to receive a Blank Rune (Pottery Trivial 15).

  • Now show the rune to Trademaster Kroven (also in the Thurgadin Exchange).

Trademaster Kroven says 'Fine piece of work there, _____, especially fer an outlander. Now yer gunna need to make a burin to etch the rune with. Once that's done ye need to kneel in the chapel and recite this prayer with total sincerity in yer heart. If yer plea be heard by our Father Brell he'll bless ya with the knowledge necessary to carry on. With that knowledge you'll take the blank rune, the burin and a fletching kit to etch the rune. Show Grimthor the etched rune and he'll guide you from there.'

  • Receive a Prayer to Brell.

    You say, 'What burin?'

Trademaster Kroven says 'You'll need a fletching kit and a fair bit of skill for this one, _____. Round up a tooth from a swordfish and attatch it to an Ulthork tusk wrapped in a Molkor hide.'

  • Head to Siren's Grotto and get a swordfish tooth from the swordfish and a molkor hide from the molkors. You can also get ulthork tusks there but they're much easier to get in eastern wastes where you can kill the low level ulthorks for their tusks. The swordfish tooth is NO DROP which is the only item actually forcing you to go into Siren's Grotto.

  • Combine the tusk, swordfish tooth, and hide in a fletching kit to get Burin (Fletching Trivial 135).

  • Go to the room where the quest started with the Grand Historian. Make sure Grand Historian Thoridain is in the room and stand at /loc -343.61, 803.92, -17.11, target yourself and then say the following prayer until you see a message saying you've been inspired:

You say, 'Oh Brell, Thank you for protecting me and seeing me through my trials. Forgive me for the things I think and say and do that displease you. Please reveal to me your will and bless me with the patience and obedience to do that which you desire. Amen.'

You have been inspired. The sacred pattern of the Coldain rune materializes on the ground before you.

  • On the floor in front of the Historian is an Etched Rune Pattern at /loc -319.28, 793.04, -17.11. This pattern needs to be combined with the Burin and Rune in a fletching kit. This makes an Etched Rune (Fletching Trivia 168).

  • Show your Etched Rune to Grimthor by the brew barrel in Thurgadin.

Grimthor Brewbeard says 'That looks about right. You're moving along well outlander. Next you'll be needin to brew up a sacred ink to fill the grooves in your rune. Take Iceclad Cutlass fish oil, liquid velium, and some Royal Kromrif blood, brew them in the barrel here then take the product and the rune and combine them in a fletching kit. Show Talem Tucker the resulting item if yer successful.

You say, 'What cutlass fish oil?'

Grimthor Brewbeard says 'Grab a pole and fish the waters in Iceclad until you catch yourself three Iceclad Cutlass fish. Place them in this oil extractor and you'll have whatcha need.'

    You say, 'What liquid velium?'

Grimthor Brewbeard says 'Collect a small piece of velium and a bottle of rubbing alcohol and brew them together in a barrel. It aint easy, but it should prove to be a minor task for the likes of you.'

  • Receive Fish Oil Extractor, a four-slot container.

  • Fish in Iceclad until you get three Cutlass Fish and combine them in the extractor (Fishing No-Fail Combine). This results in Cutlassfish Oil.

  • Find some Rubbing Alcohol (bought from either the Mortician in Cabilis or at the Icy Mug in Thurgadin - west of the four-way on your map). Combine the rubbing alcohol and a small piece of velium in a brew barrel to get Liquid Velium (Brewing Trivia 135).

  • Get some Royal Kromrif Blood from Iceshard Manor in Kael Drakkel.

  • Combine the Liquid Velium, Fish Oil and Royal Kromrif Blood in a brew barrel. This results in a Sacred Velium Ink (Brewing Trivial 168).

  • Combine the ink and rune in a fletching kit to get a Velium Etched Rune (Fletching Trivial 168).

  • Go to the jewelry store in Thurgadin by the Exchange. Show your rune to Talem Tucter.

Talem Tucter says 'I've heard of your mission, _____. I must admit that I had my doubts you'd make it this far. The rune's creation is nearly impossible for even the most skilled of Coldain craftsmen. You should be exceedingly proud. Many have attempted this feat and nearly all have lacked the skill, faith, patience and persistence that is prerequisite for what destiny holds in store for you. You are now ready to use this pattern to construct the sacred rune's casing and complete the runed shawl.'

    You say, 'What casing?'

Talem Tucter says 'Combine two platinum bars, a small piece of velium and the casing pattern in a Jeweler's kit. Take the completed casing and the rune and combine them in the same kit. When this is done all that's left is to tailor the rune to the shawl with the pattern. Take the finished product to Borannin, I'm sure he's eager to speak with you.'

  • Talem really means Loremaster Solstrin.

  • You receive a Rune Casing Pattern. Combine this pattern, a Small Piece of Velium and two Platinum Bars in a Jewelry Kit to receive the Rune Casing (Jewelry Trivial 152).

  • Now combine the casing and the rune in a Jewelry Kit to receive an Encased Velium Etched Rune (Jewelry Trivial 162).

  • Take the Encased Velium Etched Rune, Runed Prayer Shawl Pattern, and your Embroidered Coldain Prayer Shawl. Combine them in a tailoring kit to receive your 7th Shawl: Runed Coldain Prayer Shawl (Tailoring Trivial 162).

  • You can then go show Loremaster Solstrin your 7th shawl. Do NOT hand his your shawl until you have read the steps for the 8th shawl.

Loremaster Solstrin says 'Incredible! Never before has an outlander been skilled and determined enough to craft our sacred rune. You are now worthy of the Dain's most perilous task. You should seek an audience with the Dain immediately. Show him your Runed Prayer Shawl, he will give you the task that has been prepared for you. If the Dain is away show your Shawl to Chamberlain Krystorf and he will call for him.'

I think the cheapest way to get skill up is to make black and haze panther skin armor. Artic wyvern masks is what most people do, however the studs are insanly expensive to make!

The cheapest to make is Othmir Fur Caps.

Finally...I've done this long long painfull quest...I think there should be a higher level shawl which will patch out soon...since the finally npc that if you show her your shawl she ask you to check with her later....

if your tailoring skill is just for this shawl quest and not going to play with it after you done the quest, I guess its better to keep try to make your shawl after you've got 158 skill...since after 158, its just crazy...the time to let you gether 3 set of item to make 7th might less then the time that you raise 5 more skill point(if you not going to kill the cute Oth at CS)...

and for pottery...its trivial at 180, I mean all the part that need this skill to finish 7th. since I only have 180 skill and all the part that I've done is trivial hehe....

and I guess if they will make shawl higher lv like the ring, maybe 10th...the effect should be FT 2? but maybe the coming shawl is not going to be done only with trade skill, maybe some big fight...some rare drop? I've heard someone said that 8th shawl is out at some server...anyone have any idea?

#Anonymous, Posted: Aug 22 2001 at 12:46 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) People, you are all crazy. You all keep posting your int and wis, but that doesnt matter on combining stuff and success rates. All int and wis has to do w/ is the rate you get up skill points. So yes its important when doing trade skills, but only when raising skills. Also some trade skills might be based on other things besides dex. for instance in smithing, im pretty sure that sucess rate is based on str not dex. You might want to try and raise all mellee skills as high as you can for increased sucess rates. Just my 2cp. Hope it didnt offend any of you guys cuase it wasnt meant to.

Umm... how do you show Betti the Shawl (and the other guy too).. Do you give it to her, and she will hand it back or what??

I finally got the 6th shawl made, and am a tad nervious about just giving it to Betti, and having her say "um.. Thank you." and keeping the shawl.

Has anyone handed the Shawl to Betti already?

I just succeeded with the 7th shawl.Pottery was 179 and trivial; fletching was 173 and trivial; brewing was 160 when I tried the fish oil and NOT trivial so I raised it to 168 and rest was trivial.
Jewelcraft was 171 and trivial. Tailoring was 157 and NOT trivial. I had high wisdom when I made final combine ( 246) but had a friend who succeeded on final with 142 tailoring and 154 wisdom. He had two failures during the 7th; I had none.
Some extras:1) The etched rune pattern was not NO DROP 2) It took me about 30 minutes of spamming the church while walking around to trigger the sacred pattern. Hope this helps everyone a bit.

My tailoring was 158, but I failed at the combine with 209int 140wis 170dex.

Just would like to /rude verant for makeing it nearly impossible for anyone that is not a lootwhore piggybank to even attempt at velious armor to raise tailoring skill. Surly VI could implement some tailoring items to fill that 92 slot gap in tailoring from 158-250. /RUDE VERANT

I am on the last step of the quest....

This quest is very time consuming, and in certain parts difficult. I am a lvl 55 necromancer, and I camped just about everything on the quest by myself, except threads from VL, and of course the stuff for the 7th part. I too wish anyone luck attempting this quest, it's quite time consuming, and completely messes up the Trade Econmony, but best wishes

    Jewelcraft failure result ?
    # Aug 17 2001 at 7:58 AM Rating: Default
Heh, I don't suppose there's any chance that the failed result of any of the jewelcraft combines yield back your components, eh? Wishful thinking on my part ;-) (Similar to how a failure in the attempt to make the sixth shawl returns the 5th). Or does all go <poof!>?

Those who have failed, please let us know - thanks!

ok... here we go with my veiw and tips with this quest... baking... go get a coldain tanners kit and head to WC.. there is a barbarian woman next to the lake there that sells fish and batwings... have a field day with making fish rolls till your trivial at them... take these fish rolls and trade tehm to PC's for pelts and spider silks... while your trading just kill them along the way and get some yourself... save the silks for the Wu's Armor and go get Crystalline Silks from CC near the Queen...doesnt take long to get backpacks full of them... also you can trade your fishrolls for them or buy them outright from PC's... once you get to 158 tailoring dont even bother trying to raise it anymore... its easier trying to get the stuff for 6th shawl than to raise it to 200+ to make 6th shawl trivial... just get a Enlightenment and Boon from a chanter to help you succeed... some people say that DEX is a secondary trait for tailoring... and i didnt want to risk it... to find Tanik put an item in your mouse pointer and start clicking the ground near Kael... besure to turn on the command so that it asks you if you want to drop the item... just ignore it and keep clicking away till you get the message "your to far to give that to"... that is a Kromdrif Death Squad waiting in ambush... you have to make them spawn and you need to zone to reset them... you will get either Tanik or the KDS... keep clicking and running away from the KDS till you get "you stumble, your are to far away to trade..."... you have found Tanik... just keep walking towards the way your click to make him spawn... the Royal Kromdrif Blood is easy to get if you are 55+ with a couple people and you dont care about giant faction... im on giant faction so i couldnt get it myself... so i bought it... people sell them for 1-5k... the Runed Sea Shells drop alot now off the sirens in SG... to get people down there just tell them that they drop the BP gems for the Velious armor there... rest is pretty self explainatory...

Just to continue to narrow it down, if the skill check for the combine in the mortar/pestle is Pottery, then it is trivial at 135.
    How to find Tanik
    # Aug 09 2001 at 1:37 PM Rating: Default
Tanik is a lot simpler than people make him out to be. have your gate potion on you and run around kael ent, alll over not taking the same route. he is literally spawned by stepping on a random spot in the snow. this means NO LEVITATE. Trust me guys, i spend 6 hours at the tanik spawn levved, then turned it off, ran around kael ramp, and got him to spawn in about 25 mins.

you can multi quest all shawls up to 5 (but not the 5t).....after that you need to do it on your own but the 2 skills you need to do 3 and 4 shawl are an hour each and ez as hell to get up and you need them later on in the shawl so its best just to get them up. On another note a reason VI put these type of quests in is to give something for lvl 60's to do rather than sit on their bums all day doing nothing. This is a boredom breaker for lvl 60's and such so dont complain. The end result will take alot of effort but it's worth it and the satisfaction of getting it and being one of the few who ever try and suceed. For everybody who worked their butts off and got the 7th shawl kudos for you. And yes JC is an hour or two at most and 1500 to 2k to raise to 170 sufficient skill. Tailoring is a PAIN you spend more and more hours and money getting it up to 158, cuz making wu armor is a #$^~! because u need those vials of vicious mana but anyways I'm currently on the 5th shawl and trying to get mah some biles and raise my skill for 120 or so, feel free to drop some hints on getting some biles i'm stumped /sigh
    quest end here?

If we believe the NPCs, this is the last prayer shawl, but more tasks are planned.

Maybe the reward will be a stats+8 shoulder item with Flowing Thought II that's not a prayer shawl.

I've just loosened my straight-jacket enough to type this...(after getting my tailoring to 155)...You can make large bowls to 148 but for the 7th shawl I'm guessing you need 162+, is the only way to do this farm LQ/MQ/HQ pelts and make poison vials or can I sit my fat *** in a city and do it from there?
    RE: Pottery 148+?
    # Aug 03 2001 at 2:02 PM Rating: Decent
what i've done to raise my pottery skill to 188 is to camp for zombie skins in unrest out in the courtyard. i got about 4 stacks in less than two hours killing tormented deads. also, always find, beg, plead a 57+ enc to give you the "enlightened" int buff. makes a huge difference! hope this helps.

KA-ZAAM! and in a flash of fire and lightning, our hero, bozo boy flew through the sky in his airplane,"batwing, with red paint". suddenly, he spotted his quary, the giver of long quests, the ruiner of good moods, evil itself, it was betti frostweaver. alright betti, give yourself up, iv got you now, and theres nothing you can do...suddenly, betti whips out a remote control with a red button on it, one, little tap of the button, and SHAZAM! a steel cage lowers down on bozo boy from a secret hole in the ceiling above. cackle cackle cackle, now its my turn to play games boxo boy. which would you prefer, the 400,000,000 degree hydrocloric acid, or the elecritcal spinning saw blade severing your appendages one at a time. the saw blade please.ok then, the acid it is. now then mr. bozo, or shall i call you....MR, BOZO JUNIOR!
<gasp> any last words, mr bozo JUNIOR? hmm? speal up boy. hyes, actually i do have one thing to say. well stop stalling, iv got plenty of other super heroes to destroy, what is it that you have to say. DANG THATS A LONG QUEST!!!!

Manage to finish my 7th shawl tonight. My wisdom is 255 and tailoring was 160 and it was NOT TRIVAL!! anyway i heard the 7th shawl trival at 162. After the wu tunic, which trival at 158. I did artic wyvern mask.
    To make velium studs (2)
3 velium bits + coldain velium temper + file
    To make 1 velium bits
2 small piece of velium + coldain velium temper

    To make Artic Wyvern Mask:
1 velium stud, 1 mask pattern, 1 artic wyvern hide(CS) and 1 cod oil

    To make cod oil:
Go to CS and bring ye fishing hat. Fish Cobalt Cod and then combine that cobalt cod and a flask of water in the brewing kit.

    Thats all for tailoring

Tailoring is by far the worst trade skill to work at.

Spent a total of 50kpp on all my trade skill and purchase of components. HEHEHE... GOOD LUCK TO THE REST OF YA!! ALL THE BEST!!
    The serious bottleneck is...

    TAILORING!!!! ARGHHHH!!!!

As far as I can see anyone can sit in a city for a few hours and lots of PP and get all skills to nearly 200. The only skill that is hugely time consuming is tailoring. I farmed spiders in uguk and made cured silk to get to 82. My question is WHAT IS THE FASTEST WAY to get from 82 to 130 or higher? Someone wrote about crystalline silk? to 131? What do you use to get it up there? Is it the stackable thread from Velk or can you get it from CC? and how do you make silver thread? Please someone find me a fast way to get tailoring up before I go nuts.

I hate you Verant, I really hate you.
    RE: The serious bottleneck is...
    # Jul 27 2001 at 3:59 AM Rating: Default
Crystalline Silk drops a lot from the spiders in Crystal Caverns. And takes you to 131. The Threads from Velks are only used for the 5th Shawl as far i know
    RE: The serious bottleneck is...
    # Jul 25 2001 at 8:21 AM Rating: Decent
Velk Labs is so crowded now with people collectin silk, threads, and killin kobolds, me say go to East K.

Kill all the lions usin tracker to helps find them, and use the HQ Cat pelts to make Reinforced Leather Armor with steel bonin. This will gets you to 108ish. Keep killin lions and use HQ Cat pelts to make Tailored Quivers to 115.

Then kill spiders in East K for stackabl silk to make Wu armor. This will gets you to 158 skill if you wants to go that far.

That just one elfies opinion though. *grins big*
