Home to the Kromrif and Kromzek of Velious, it is here you will find the leader of the storm giants, King Tormax. You'll have to prove your dedication to the giants of Kael before you'll be allowed to set foot in the city to make use of the city's bankers and vendors.

Beware of what lies beyond the arena. Even the most dedicated followers of the Kromzek cannot enter the temple of Rallos Zek. It is regarded by the giants of Kael as sacred ground and trespassers will be met with much resistance. The Avatar of War itself has been known to appear to those daring enough to explore the temple, and the result is typically disaster...

High Priest of Vallon Zek - lightblue to level 59-60 (a cleric of vallon zek is dark blue to 60) so slightly lower level.

Spawns in the house at the arena at about +1200 +1500 -56

Didn't drop anything when I killed him

Your faction standing with Kromzek could not possibly get any worse. (not sure but would think -10 like the others)
Your faction standing with Kromrif has been adjusted by -2
Your faction standing with King Tormax has been adjusted by -2
Your faction standing with Claws of Veeshan has been adjusted by 5

This is still a level 30-60 zone.
Pathing is bad, I mean really bad, its probably one of the worst zones Iv seen.
XP is really really slow
Giants have a lot of hitpoints, they buff themselves with SoW and Speed, and they hit hard.
Loot is crap.
Naaa... This zone is definitely a waste of time, sorry.

if you think the pathing is bad in Kael Drakkel, then you definetly have NOT seen bad pathing in EverQuest. It is fairly predictible, with a few execptions.

bad pathing can work to a kiter's advantage, but lots of stuff summons in here. However, my necro would tap-tank to grind AA xp here once upon a time. So it depends what level you are trying to get use out of the zone.

This zone was upper-end of the third expansion... that's a long, long time ago. It was also vital to doing the group and raid-game content that was above it (and not much was above King Tormax, Vindi and Avatar of War). 3/4 of the drops in the zone are armor or other quest related. Cash drops are decent in the form of the heavy weapons and some of the best non-attunable tradable gear in the game drops here. Helms and toes are for quest turn ins, hence the reason they drop so much.

The faction hits provided in here can still be useful to questers (especially since they updated the Coldain Prayer Shawl quest in a more recent expansion --Underfoot I believe?). The low level giants were put in to give lower level types access to the faction hits vs. speedy XP. Speedy XP wasn't really part of the game design back then either...

It was a decent hotzone (when it was flagged such) as you could pile on the AA xp pretty good. This was about when the Mayong server experiment was tried (start at level 51) and Kael was busy all the time... 20-40 people for several months. This totally changes the way the zone feels (when other camps are down and roamers aren't getting across the zone on their wanderings).

I'll agree as a modern XP grind zone this isn't the place to go... once they put The Serpent's Spine expac out there really isn't much that compares to go 1-70 speedily by yourself in a tight zone chain outside of the hotzones (which sometimes are duds for a given level range).

After reading your post, I couldn't help but notice this when I was in there last night. On the zone in loading screen it says Kael Drakkal, but when you first enter it says that you have entered Kael Drakkel. I know it's not that important, just probably been a typo for years. On the map in Eastern Wastes it states Drakkal. Anyway, I had fun killing the giants. =)

Just wondering if anyone else has seen a increase of rates of drops in and around the arena area. Yesterday in about 2 hours we got...

1 chain BP
1 chain gloves
1 plate gloves
1 plate arms
1 SBoC
1 leather bracer
1 leather sleeve
1 Black Blade of Tormenting

and of course the usual heads, toes and stuff.

Was this just an exceptional day?

-Aggro radius
-What not to pull
-Where to pull from

Thanks in advance for the help :)

I am the puller for my guild when we go to Arena, monks arent really neciasiary here.

The see invis line mobs can be pacified by a mid 50's cleric or bard, and they are pretty weak so it doesn't matter too much if you get an add here. Once you move further up to the troopers, veterans, etc, you can single pull most of the time. Only time I got adds were from roamers, make sure to have any roamers away from the monster you pull.

There are a few places you can pull to. One of them is the corners SW and SE of the actuall arena. There is only 1 spawn here and accasionaly a roamer. The best place though, would the the corner right in front of you when you go up one of the ramps. Here there are no mobs that can agroe you if you are all packed together.

Unless you have a high level pacifier, you should stay away from pulling is the named at the far north end. He has 2 clerics next to him who are almost impossible to pull apart from him. He doesnt drop good loot anyways. Also the protectors of zek inside the building of arena cant be single pulled, so stay away from them to.

I havent had a problem with agroe radius...its pretty big compared to other raid places, but you have plenty of room to work with in this place.

As a side not, make sure to kill healers first. It can be anoying when you fighting a mob many times over because of a CH or 2.

I have some questions and I appreciate anyone taking the time to help me out. I'm unsure of what people are referring to when they say "Plate House". Is this the throne room? The throne room is where you do this cycle everyone is talking about right? Now the purpose of doing that only plate drops during this and lots of it? Is this the same stuff that drops in the arena and courtyard? If it is then I'm guessing the only benefit of doing this is that it drops more and you know what you're getting? I'm not sure of this and I'd appreciate anyones help with me learning this zone. Thanks

I assume the "plate house" is what we call the Ice House (EQ Atlas #11). The cycle in the Ice House is nice (if you're looking for plate), because the spawns are pretty fast, the giants aren't that hard to kill (though the last guy is pretty tough), and the drops are more frequent than around the arena. It's also a dead end, so you don't have to worry much about wanderers or trains.

For those hunting here to do the Thurg Quest armors... you may find this helpful.

Quest armor storyline

Unzip the file and put the "storyRgxthurg.txt" file and the "thugystuff" folder into the storyline folder which is located in the main Everquest folder. When you log you can then click the story window and the title story "Thurg Quest Armor info" to view the armor and gem drops needed plus the location of the quest givers in Thurgadin.

Hope this helps some people. Good luck.

Added the armor stats to the storyline so you can see if the armor is an upgrade for you or not. Plus just helps out anyone MQing or running a raid here.

Faction Raising
# Jan 31 2003 at 1:45 PM Rating: Decent
Just some info on how to raise Kromzek Faction:
Best way to easily raise Zek faction is to kill the Major Dragons in Velious ie. The keeper and her shrine guards. Also Woushi and WW named dragons. Set up shop in SS and kill everything on the first floor, rinse and repeat will help. Keeper is a 1 faction level hit at least. EoS and other named on CoV faction in ToV helps.
The real problem is raising Rif and King faction. Killing Dain and Yel will give you the biggest King faction hits. You can also kill dwarves, dwarf factioned wolves, and royal guards in Ice Keep to help with the non zek factions. (Since ruining Thurg faction wasn't an option for me it is tremendously hard task)
There are at least 3 giants near Quest Givers that are not on Zek faction. You can invis back to these NPC if you are ally to Zek and hug the wall in the thrown room. Very Important: DO Not drag corpses. This is huge aggro if a non Zek faction is in the room. See Instant Death! Do not rez near one either. There is also a giant under the frost bridge that can see thru invis and is not on zek faction. He will kill you if he is near the bridge when you cross. Corpse recovery is very difficult since you CANNOT summon corpses in KD. 30 minutes of monk work to get your corpse back from the throne room and one ****** off guild monk!

I have tried this several times and have yet to get the plate cycle to work. I was told that you clear the throne room then say "The Dain must be slain for the piece we must obtain". Is that the correct phrase? Also Sometimes the 3 on the throne are not there. Does that mean that someone screwed up and would i have to wait for the full room to pop before starting to clear?

I have done the Plate House Cycle a few times with my guild. As the raid leader, I have found this way to do it is the easiest.

We started each cycle with at least 3 well balanced groups. Groups one and two had a decent MA quality tank, and one cleric per group at least. Group 2 only would assist the SA. All other groups would assist the MA.

#1. Obviously clear the room of all giants.

#2. The correct phrase is "The dain must be slain, for the peace we shall obtain".

Here is where Doldigun spawns on the "throne". Attacking him starts the "cycle". Initially 2 giants come. Group 2 would take one giant. All other groups would assist the MA on the other.

When each giant dies, another one comes immediately upon death of a giant. These giants that come progressively become more difficult in level. The only derivation of an immediate giant "add" coming upon a death of a giant is when you get the final giant (around a lvl 60). This giant will not come until all other giants in the cycle have been eliminated. Obviously the MA's giant would go down first, and all groups assisting the MA would take the next giant.

When G2's giant drops, G2 proceeds to take on the 2nd giant. What I have found is, usually by the time G2's 2nd giant is dead, the rest of the groups have killed all the other giant "waves", leaving all groups to take on the "Boss" giant together.

When the final giant dies, Doldigun "runs" away. Killing him is a cakewalk if you can complete the plate cycle, and his head is for the 9th Coldain ring quest.

If we had enough groups, we could usually get in 2 plate cycles before having to reclear the room of its spawns, as the cycle can be restarted immediately after it is completed.

Agreed. Level 31 is too low to hunt in Kael. The only time I ever got the corroded chain for my rogue was on full blown raids in the Arena. In 3 raids only 2 chain peices ever dropped and I got 1 of them.

Wait until you are 45. Get about 4 groups of avg level 50 with healers and chanters. Then fight your way into the Arena in Kael. I find that cloth and plate are more commonly dropped than chain. But that just may be luck of the draw.

Wipeout at Gleed Dragonhunter
# Oct 21 2002 at 8:04 AM Rating: Decent

OK have to post this as none of the Gleed Dragonhunter killers ever posted this.

We went to go kill Gleed and had a 3 group raid force that was there to do Plate cycle since KD was uncamped except for us at the time we desided to go kill Gleed and grab his bow - It was no problem getting thru to him at all. Killed all the easy giants on the way without a hicup and cleared a few by the see invis line.

Walked the shelf with the dogs on the right side drop off and then killed the 3 blue guards in the way and the undercon green guard jus in front of Gleed. When we pulled Dragonhunter - sure enough we weren't able to split him and his dog - no problem - we had 3 full groups 2 mobs = no problem.

THEN about 1 minute into the fight EVERY DOG from that island rushed us. I mean they WERE WAY WAY WAY out of our aggro area. I mean it was as if getting off of Orc lift in Gfay aggroed the orcs from Orc hill down to Kelethin. That is how far we were from the dogs. regardless - 4 to 5 dogs showed up from no where and wiped us out - only one group got off an evac.

The bottom line is either:
- someone trained us: didn't happen - I happened to be meleeing facing the archway and saw all of the dogs arrive and start smoking folks -sitters first. I saw no rogue element leading them and they are hardly from a main pathway.
- there is a relation ship between his dogs and that pack of dogs in that kennel island thing.
- this could be a new scripted event (doubtful) - but it is surprising NO ONE reported this before.

If you have never killed him before be carefull here. It might behoove your force to wipe the dogs out on your way to prevent the surprise we received.

He does stroll around now. I have seen him walk back behind Tormax's thrown room and I have seen him walk to the Arena.

I dont care if you think that I cant go there or belong there! I have some realy cool screen shots of the nobles and the throne and lots more. But, I did learn a very good lesson! And that is not to go neer the vindicator, he killed me out in 2 hits, the first one basicaly killed me, was bleeding to death and all, but then he had to come back and finnish me off! lmao. This guy hits at about 750hp. Point being this zone rocks!

Pick-up groups are common towards the outer edges of Kael, but the inner areas where the 50+ guys are is pretty much guild raid only, at least on my server. There is almost always a large guild in the arena area where the quest pieces drop.

To the minstrel who wants faction, the best way is to kill coldain. It's much much harder to get a group in Thurgadin and Icewell Keep killing coldain than it is in Kael, so you might consider getting the Thurgadin quest armor instead. To gain faction with Thurgadin, you can kill the mid level giants and dire wolves in GD with a group. There's always people camping them in GD. As a bard, you could probably charm kite the wanderers with little trouble also. Good luck!

Hunting with Alts
# Dec 14 2001 at 10:59 AM Rating: Default
I decided to try out playing on the side of the giants with my alts. They are a 32 war and 32 clr duo. I seem to be finding it difficult to do however. Dwarves and wolves in Great divide are all even con and blues now, and from what I can gather, Skyshrine is a bit too high level for them (they can take single yellows and low reds without too much trouble)
They are currently dubious to giants so they cant do anything but bank in Kael, bags are full of Coldain heads and are bored silly with GD. I have about 200 kobold paws from VL for them as soon as they can do that quest, but it is very slow going.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where they can hunt stuff that is about 33-35 and get positive Kael factions at the same time? Would perfer non casting mobs, but they aren't too picky.

On my server (brell) it is called the MANOR, it is up on the ledge where tuuak spawns. there is a triggered event there, durring which ONLY plate drops, and at 1 piece or more a cycle. To initiate this cycle, wipe the throne room out (the room is a 30min spawn, the giant lords are a 2 hour spawn, u will need to time this) Stand in front of the throne and say "the dain must be slain for the peace we shall obtain!"(cant remember exact wording) once it works a coldain dorf will appear on the throne, now make sure you are ready because you need to hit the dorf, as soon as u do he calls for help and the cycle starts. At this point 2 giants spawn in front of the throne, the best strategy here (did it with under 2 groups) is to have some root the giant who's name starts with "K" in the corner to keep him away, then you kill the giant who's name starts with "G". As soon as that giant dies, another harder will spawn, kill him, still keeping the first giant rooted, then kill the rooted giant. Once again anoter harder giant will spawn, take him down, imediatly after another level 53+ giant will spawn, think he is 55, take him down like the rest, and a final level 60 giant will spawn, drop him, and you should get atleast one piece of plate..now careful, immediately after the same dorf u whacked to start this whole thing will spawn..KILL HIM! he will NOT give bad coldain faction, he is a traitor. DO NOT LET HIM RUN AWAY. If he gets away you cannot do the cycle again for a certain amount of time. kill the dorf take his head(for 9th coldain ring i think) then the cycle is over...watch the room spawn timer because the giants cant be mezed or stunned, and casters who will debuff u spawn in the room. Hope that helps all. You can do the cycle as often as u like with no wait inbetween as long as the dorf dies at the end :) GL plate classes!

ps. did the cycle 5 times the other day, got 2 plate arms, plate legs, and plate gaunts :) dosent always drop a piece but more often drops one

yes the 3rd mob in the rotation is 55th. and i suggest having a tank of atleast that order to tank the mobs in this cycle, because without a defensive disk that 4th Giant is gonna eat a papertank under level 58 or so to pieces. (o btw papertank = sk and pallys, real tanks are warriors)

All I want to do is hunt for some Ry'Gorr in Eastern Wastes. This looks like the closest place to bind (if I have read the bind guide correct). I've never set foot in Velious, where is the closest place to bind to hunt in Eastern Wastes? And no, I can't raid with 50+ groups for weeks to gain faction and I'm not even thinking about getting my quest armor yet. Thanks to anyone who can help.

You can hunt in EW at rygorr fort at 34, just need a full group, and hopefully at least one tank in the mid 40's to be main. I was in a group who did that, and two of our melees were mid 30's. However, we had a lvl 51 sk as main tank. The other members of the group were above 40. Before the 51 showed up, we got wiped out several times. Afterwards, we hunted the fort for several hours, and only had one wipeout. Be aware that if you hunt the fort, You most likely will die a few times. But the loot is awesome. Orc fang earrings were so common that every group members ended up with 2 or more. Several orc fang necklaces dropped too, and about 4 different pieces of Rygorr chain armor. Couldn't get Firbrand to spawn, even though we killed his placeholder a dozen or more times.

BTW, watch out if anyone pulls the chief to kill, as there MAY be a bunch of Avenger rygorrs who pop when he dies. Not every time, but saw 7 one time. My first hour there, and I was unaware that they rush out and aggro everything near the fort. If someone pulls the chief, invis, and wait for the avengers to be killed or despawn.

BTW, if you are KOS to giants, you'd be better off binding in Thurgadin. After all, you can't exactly have invis up when you repop after being killed. Could lead to an ugly chain death. Easy enough to get sow and invis in thurg, and run to EW.

As of the last patch, you can also bind at the Gnome Docks in Iceclad. It's quite a bit further way, but a whole heck of a lot safer.

As far as mid-30s in EW goes, I'd say go for it! It can sometimes be a little difficult to get into a decent RyGorr group, but you never know. The problem is, the only RyGorr that drop the armour are the Elites and higher. (the lower ones MAY drop it, but if so, it's so rare that it's not even worth trying). They will probably eat you, even in a group, at level 33. They /con yellow in the low 40s. The chief is even tougher.

Yes, Kael is closest place to RyGorr fort to bind. The 2 guards out front will attack you though if you are KOS to giants so either have sow or invis going in and make sure to have invis going out.

A great way to increase faction with Coldain and CoV is at the WL zone. Have a group of 51+, enchanter for adds, cleric for heals. Have a tank/melee pull giants to the zone, and kill them there. This did wonders for me. I went from Kindly to Threateningly in 2 hours.

Wondering if a 45th Enchanter would be able to find a group in here for some giant killing. It seems on Xev that people prefer to pull the Wakening Lands zone, rather than the East Wastes side. Is there a difference in difficulty?

My situation is im going to hunt in KD to get Thurg armor till my SS faction and my guilds are high enough to hunt in ToV Test halls for SS gear. But in the mean time we hit KD Arena alot. Last night we pulled tons of mobs, we had SK Boots, A really nice sword, and SK cloak drop, THe night before we had 3 Int caster quest armor peices drop. My question is since 2 nights ago we got 3 peices of quest armor and last night we got none at all, is there a specific list as to which mobs in the Arena drop cirtain quest armor peices?
Adjerants droped int caster quest peices 3 times, but no other classes got peices. Do Veterans drop a cirtain amount? How about Zeks? or Adjudants? Troopers never seemed to drop any thing cept crappy scalemail. Any how any one know?

You can do all armor quests as follows:
First start by killing Giants and LOTS OF THEM! Through this you will gain faction with Coldain and with Claws Of Veashan. Kill giants in arena and gain the pieces of armor needed to complete the coldain armor quests. This armor really stinks comared to SS and KD but it will get you by. After this it is really time to decide what Armor you wish to persue. For me (lvl 56 Outrider) there is no better armor than SS quest gear. Every piece has stamina or HP tacked on to it except the guantlets and those can be replacesd by the untamed armor I already have. Also, SS gear is only a couple AC points lower that KD armor. As a high lvl Ranger I will give up a few ac (since I will be well over 1000 anyhow) to gain an extra 1000 hp.
At any rate, after checking out the armor and deciding weather KD or SS armor is better for your class you will know what faction to persue. The next step is to go to Temple of Veashan and kill either in the temple or in the testing halls. (Testing halls has no attached faction and the armor that drops is for the SS quests, Temple will lower faction with Dragons and raise it with Giants and is the only place where you can obtain the armor needed to complete the KD quests) TOV is a nasty place and you will need an organized raid to do it. Because of this you will have to go on Many Many raids to get a full suit. This is why I reccomend getting Thurgaden armor first to tide you over even if it means having to work a few weeks to fix faction afterward.
At any rate. Look up all armor types and make sure the faction path you are following is correct for your class. I started out hunting in SS and it took me about 3 weeks to amend for the errors of my past but as hundreds of giants felt the wrath of my Lamentation and thousands of Drakael Dire Wolves met their demise the Claws of Veashan once again accepted me as one of their Kin. The meaning of this being that it is never to late to fix your faction... Just set your mind to it and get to work. Good luck to you all on the armor!

Consider this:
1: It will be much harder to improve KD faction by killing dwarves and turning in their heads.
2: By doing the Thurgadin or Kael Drakkal armor quests, you decrease faction with the opposing factions.

There are skyshrine quests too, by the way. There is no way at all to be able to do _all_ armor quests...
RE: Faction
# Apr 27 2001 at 3:27 AM Rating: Decent
You can do all the armor quests. Just not at the same time - you'll have to work your faction back up with whomever is mad at you.
Giant faction questions...

Does increasing your Kael Drakkal faction (Kromrif, Kromzek, King Tormax and whatever else there is) hurt my faction in PoG, Kelethin, Surefall Glade and/or Morin's Kithikor guild? I am a Wood Elf Ranger, so I really want to keep faction with them up while being able to do the Circlet of Tallon quest (and later the Kael Drakkal armor quests).

And second, as a 35 Ranger, what should I do to keep the faction up? I hear there are some Coldain camps, but which zones?

Finally, how do I get the keys to those zones (if I need any)?
