The Coldain Shawl quest begins with Loremaster Borannin in Thurgadin. He's found near the Paladin guild at location -305, 815.

You say, 'Hail, Loremaster Borannin'

Loremaster Borannin says 'Greetings, _____, please be seated and hear the Grand Historian, he is among the wisest of our people.'

You say, 'I seek to perform duties for the crown.'

Loremaster Borannin says 'Those eager to prove their loyalty to the Dain may do so by completing tasks that I have been commissioned to assign. If you wish to begin your service, return to me with four toes of our enemy, the Kromrif.'

Bring him four "Frost Giant Toes" (common drop from Kromrif giants). Upon turn-in:

Loremaster Borannin says 'Ahh, well done! On behalf of the Dain I thank you for making a dent in the number of our sworn enemy. Please accept this as a token of our appreciation. It is trivial, I know, but if you are as loyal as you claim to be, it will increase in power over time. It just so happens I have a [task] to further demonstrate your loyalty, ______.'

Your faction standing with Coldain has been adjusted by 10.
Your faction standing with Dain Frostreaver IV has been adjusted by 2.
Your faction standing with Kromzek has been adjusted by -1.
Your faction standing with Kromrif has been adjusted by -5.
You gain experience!!

This leads into the second Coldain Shawl quest.

There is no "plate breastplate mold". According to Zam, the bp can be made with a "breastplate mold" sold by the same merchants as the other pieces.
FYI since we can see the amount of faction now...

So, before you start this, it will be worth your while to pre-loot 90% of this stuff. I am going to list everything for up to the Shawl 2.0, where another person has already written one.

The Great Divide:
2 Drakkel Wolf Whiskers drop from A Drakkel Dire Wolf (Note: the highest concentration of these wolves is near the Nexus Scion. Only took me 30 minutes to get my two.)
5 Glowing Worm Bile: Alright this one is tricky. It only drops of off elder and young shardwurms. They are spread out, but two or three will be in the tunnels. They will have a tell-tale glow about them. you can notice it on the ground. These will ALWAYS drop the bile. Took me two hours to get all 5.

Eastern Wastes (Bring a tracker);
8 Snow Griffin Eggs (these drop in BOTH EW zones. Get 8, put 4 in the bank. You can thank me later.)
4 Frost Giant Toes
10 Kromrif Heads
1 Tundra Kodiak Meat
2 Frost Bunny Meat (In shawl #3, it says Snow Bunny Meat. This is incorrect, it is Frost Bunny Meat.)
2 Ulthork Meat (Best place to get these is near the ruins in the Rain of Fear version of EW.)
1 Woven Frost Giant Beard
1 Ulthork Tusk (same as the meat. Go to the RoF version)
2 Manticore Manes (tracker makes this job much easier)

Velktor's Lab: Your new favorite zone.
75 Crystalline Silk Threads
10 Small Pieces of Velium
4 Large Bricks of Velium
15 Blocks of Velium
3 Crystalline Silk

I find the easiest way to get all this is to go into the tunnels, which can be found by going through the fake wall on the ramp. And farming ALL the spiders. This will take awhile.

Western Wastes: (Bring a tracker)
2 Unrefined Diamonds
3 Unrefined Emeralds
3 Unrefined Sapphires.
The best way to get these is go to the Wyvern caves in the northern part of the zone, kill them all, and repeat.
8 Velium Hound Furs: this is where you want a tracker. They have a large aggro range, but are widespread.

Cobalt Scar:
2 Siren Hair ( I farmed in SG for hours did not see one. Kill the siren's infront of the zone in to Siren's Grotto a few times. I got both mine in one spawn.)

Siren's Grotto: Maze City
2 Runed Sea Shells (These MUST have the Enduring Breath effect on them with one charge.)
1 Swordfish Tooth
1 Molkor Hide

Kael Drakkel:
1 Royal Kromrif blood Drops off both Klaggan Iceshard and Vorken Iceshard.

Iceclad Ocean:
3 Iceclad Cutlassfish (Fishing! Have fun, bring beer.)

SHOPPING LIST
While in the Plane of Knowledge:
2 Jug of Sauces (Chef Denrun in the Plane of Knowledge)
1 Loaf of Bread (Chef Denrun in the Plane of Knowledge)
1 Mixing Bowl (Chef Denrun in the Plane of Knowledge)
3 Spices (Chef Denrun in the Plane of Knowledge)

1 Cup Flower (Chef Denrun in the Plane of Knowledge)
2 Platinum Bars (Jeweler Nonny in the Plane of Knowledge)
8 Silver Threads (Tailor Kujen in the Plane of Knowledge)
2 Glass Shards (Sculptor Radee in the Plane of Knowledge)

When you spend your time in Thurgadin:
1 Etching Tools (In order to get these Say "I need a set of Etching Tools" to Meg Tucter.
1 Velium Smithy Hammer (Nimren Stonecutter in Thurgadin)
23 Coldain Velium Tempers (Nimren Stonecutter in Thurgadin)

When visiting the Drakkin of Crescent Reach:
1 Plate Boot Mold (Smith Nkosi in Crescent Reach)
1 Plate Gauntlet Mold (Smith Nkosi in Crescent Reach)
1 Plate Helm Mold (Smith Nkosi in Crescent Reach)
1 Plate Breastplate Mold (Smith Nkosi in Crescent Reach)
1 Plate Greaves Mold (Smith Nkosi in Crescent Reach)

Ty for this list. You also need Rubbing Alcohol found in Thurgadin. Get more than 4 extra Snow Griffin Eggs, trivial in 2.0 is 400 and minimum eggs is 4. "Plate Breastplate Mold" is wrong, you need a "Breastplate Mold".

We just did the 8th shawl walk with 1 group.
66 chanter
63 bard
65 cleric
65 druid
62 warrior
60 ranger

it got hairy at times but nobody died and we got the job done.
i did it a long time ago and the guy you guard was mezzable at the time but he wasnt this time so we just got agro and the bard ran him in circles while the group rested then the chanter(me) just mind wiped him and he when on to the next part with no problems. We did loose him when he crossed the water but he poped up on the other shore you just got to be patient.

This quest is sooo hard I got all the way to #6..and am unable to find a recipie to skill my tailoring high enough to do the combine! I also just found out there is Raid needed for the final shawl. 50k (subtracting profit from re-sale of excess from goods bought, excess of needed combined componants, and combines) later and at a brick wall! If you take this on I suggest u get every tradeskill at a mastery lvl (220+) 1st (you will need it not only for quest combines; but also for the combines you'll need just to do the combines you need to do in order to get the product you'll need for the actual skill u need at that time)! then decide if it's worth it to you so you dont waste a whole lot of time you could have spent getting XP! I say it's a waste of time! I regret ever trying! If tailoring didn't require smithing to be above 146 after 158 tailoring or if all the recipies in between 158 and 250 didnt require your skill to be higher than the actual triv, then it would be worth it! GOOOD LUCK!!!(You will need it)

You don't need to get your skills up that high. With skills in the 180 area should easily be good enough. The trick to shawl #6 is that you just have to resign yourself to doing it several times. For number 8, you don't need a raid. All that's really needed is one or two groups depending on level. For your tailoring, just go make some platinum ribbons. They'll get you to the mid 180s.

I did look into that option...It requires your smithing(the absolute hardest skill) to be at 148 for the shears...and weeks of foraging for the dye. I have no clue even how to begin to forage. Is there a recipie that I can just buy the necessary items for combine??

Hi!

A couple of points to help clarify:
You don't need to smith the shears yourself, you can buy them in the bazaar.
I personally don't recommend the ribblons, complete money sink and very expensive.
First off, unless you are a Ranger or Druid, you won't be foraging at all. Secondly, the ribbons and dye components will cost you a small fortune.
Look into the DoN Cultural armor (tailoring). The Expert's leather/silk combines can take you to 182 and the components are much more easily obtained (depending on race).
Last thing, definitely peruse the EQ Traders Corner. www.eqtraders.com
It will answer many questions more accurately and in greater depth than possible on Allakhazam.
I love Allah but it's better for other information.
Good Luck, I've done it (cheaply) and so can you :-)

The first two parts of the Coldain Shawl quest involve killing many Frost giants, this increases the faction with both the Coldain and even Better CoV ( Claws of Veeshan). The four toes are not rare and drop on a regular bases from the giants near the EW zone.
Both these quests can be completed by buying them but i recommend getting the faction, Claws of Veeshan have many great quests to offer if your faction is healthy with them.

Im still indifferent. Plus Ive killed good bunch
of giants with my necromancer. =(

i conned apprehensive to everyone, including the Loremaster but gave it a shot anyway. I said my line "I wish to perform duties for the crown." and it worked. I got the quest. Level 40 agnostic bard. So go figure. Thought you might like to know. Biggest mistakes when doing lines I've found are 1) spelling errors. 2) not in /say mode.

Maybe its just Terris Thule, but whenever i go to GD, there is always a group of lvl 50+ people camping the giant fort for CoV faction. as a lvl 39 cleric (yay for CH!) they were more than happy to have me to reduce their downtime and keep the corpses cleared. In 3 hours i was lvl 41, had heads and toes falling out my ears, made about 200p, got about 10 points in baking from making frost giant steaks and was maxed negative faction with the kromrifs. Too bad the other shawls arent this easy....

depending on how far into 50 they were, this could be very realistic to level that fast. At 52 many of the giants in the fort are lblue with a fair share of green and a few dblue. I would imagine at 55 it will be almost all green to me so anyone of lower level would get the exp for them and level very fast. And yes level x 1.5 does hold true even in the 50's. I 2box a lot and have watched that very closely.

Not sure if things are different on Terris than on Xev, but i don't ever remember a lvl39 being able to get xp grouped with 50+'s. And 39 - 41 in 3 hours on GD giants, hmm I don't think so, when you consider that as the lowest member of the group you'd get the least xp...I was quad kiting them at lvl39, and didn't progress that quickly.

Right quading giants at lvl 39???? The dire wolves sure but giants have a bit more hp and regen than the wolves. I play a 38 druid and while I am not an expert I seriously doubt that a 39 could quad the giants. Too many hp with a decent regen. And yes a 39 can group with 50's though they wont get much xp per kill a group of 50's could kill giants at such a rate that he would still get great xp and lvl fast

WAHOO!!!

I tried to hail him and he ignored me. I conned indifferent to him, so I figured I needed to kill more Giants to get faction (need more heads anyway) and on a whim I handed him the four toes I had gathered.

He gave me the burlap shawl. When I conned him again, he judged me amiably!

RE: 2 toes
# Sep 29 2002 at 8:43 PM Rating: Excellent
First: The reason you got it with 2 toes is that somebody before you either had already given him 2 or 3 toes. Therefor you received the shawl in a Multiquested manner, even though unintentional.

Second: He requested 4 toes when you hailed him because to start the second shawl you have to ask "What task?" I believe, or something of the sort, rather than simply hailing him.

Hope this helps you start your second shawl, and clears up any confusion for people reading as to how many toes are needed.

so far there r only 8 shawls in game. got mine the other day, and oh so much fun to toy with. its 8ac 8cha 8stam 8wis 8int 8sv fire 8sv cold 8sv poison 8sv disease 8sv magic 50hp 50mana, and has an effect that gives 2 extra mana a tic, and adds 15 percent to buff durations. they shawl quests arent very hard. I was able to solo my way to the shell part in the 7th shawl, cuz i couldnt find a seller. other than that, only time ive needed help is when saving the general. get ur skills up and give it a shot. its well worth it

Don't worry about faction. Just start killing giants, and by the time you get 4 toes (first quest) and 10 heads (second quest), you should have plenty of faction, provided you haven't been killing dwarves for fun and prizes. I started out threatening to the dwarves before starting this quest, and am amiable now.

heads...toes
# Mar 31 2002 at 5:23 AM Rating: Decent
a little info here on where to get the heads and toes. I found it much easier to get the heads and toes off of the frost giants in GD than in EW. spent many, many hours charming animals in EW killing giants (which is a lot of fun, considering the downtime is not much...20 minutes fighting...8 sitting. good ratio imo) and only got 2 toes and one head the entire time. of course my luck is bad, so figure that into your plan. Anyways in GD i fought near the EW zone line and killed a few of those giants there, which seemed to be near death after 3 Drifting dead dots (approx 640hp per dot) and got a couple heads and toes rather quickly. i also was able to buy the rest of my heads in GD as people were auctioning them quite a bit. payed 50pp for 4 to one person, and later, when i only needed one more, shelled out 20pp for the last one.

my advice would be bring out your oven spit, plenty of fish and bat wings and bake in your downtime to get that skill > 135 for the next part of the quest. that's about it for now. onto quest #3 for me

Flowing Thought

RE: FT1 is not @%*^ clarity

Flowing thought anything is well worth it period, because the wonder of flowing thought is, it's extra mana regen per tick regardless of whether you're sitting down or not, so that's extra mana regen per tick standing up, kiting, walking around or whatever, not just sitting and medding, it may not be clarity granted but it's better then nothing and definatly better then sitting imho. Thx

Well, now that flowing thought items stack, you can end up with quite a bit of extra mana regeneration. So its not a @%*^ clarity but if you had your head out of your *** you would know that the prayer shawl quest is well worth it.

The 7th shawl (as I'm sure you will discover) has an effect of Flowing Thought which is a jboots version of Clarity.

Book mark this page or you'll be forever looking for each shawl as they are not organized anywhere else that I've seen.

Early suggestions: You'll probably start this at 30 or later. I read through all the shawl quests at 30 and discovered there were things I could do to make the quests easier. Here's a short list:

1. Save Ulthork Meat. I was doing Ulthorks in GD at 30.
2. Save Snow Griffin eggs.
3. Save Tundra Kodiak Meat
4. Work up baking skill; goal is 135
5. Work up pottery skill. 120ish shouldn't cost more than 40p to accomplish, but will take you several hours. I didn't want any failures so I spent an extra 50p and got my skill to 142.
6. Work smithing.

If you do these things in the process of leveling, you'll find the shawl quest very easy. One final comment on pottery - your Int or Wis are not very important to leveling this skill. I did this with Wis over 200 side-by-side with another PC druid who's Wis was 120 (both our Ints were well under 100) and we experienced similar skill bumps. The only difference was I had more successes.
#Anonymous, Posted: Jan 13 2002 at 3:33 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Dex is what determines how fast your skill will go up int or wis just reduces the number of failures so you have to take that into consideration also. Just thought you'd like to know.

success is based off your highest stat... skill raising is based off wis/int...
RE: Quests in Order
# Feb 12 2002 at 10:12 AM Rating: Excellent
Actually, the official tradeskill word is:

1) skill up is determined by highest of WIS/INT for all tradeskills

2) minor bonuses on skill up rate for STR in smithing and DEX in fletching ONLY (no secondary skill bonuses for any other tradeskill)

3) success/failure is a based upon SKILL LEVEL versus ITEM TRIVIAL LEVEL ... WIS/INT/STR/DEX/etc. have no impact on success rate

4) some "bonus items" (like the tinkered Geerlok devices) provide a percentage increase to effective skill (providing some improved success rate)

So, max out that WIS or INT and you'll see skills develop quicker in tradeskills. This is more important as you get higher in skill (skillups come quicker at lower skill levels.)

Check out http://www.eqtraders.com to keep abreast of tradeskill stuff.

I don't know if they have made pottery easier, but I skilled up from 1 to 122 tonight in an hour and a half. My first 40 attempts achieved 30 skillups, and it didn't slow down much from there. I only wish every other trade skill would skill up that fast. :)

Are there any quests like that for Coldain faction like bonechips kinda thing with Kaladim. I don't wanna have to do one quest just to turn in some heads and toes. Like can i just get the 10 heads or 4 toes and just turn em in for faction or do i have to get the first shawl first etc? Any help on faction miniquests would be appreciated

My Necro was first killing the giants at 30 in a group with other 30-45 characters; if I'd known about the quest then I'd have collected toes and heads there, but at least it got my faction up to amiable. I first soloed one at 37, but it was tough and if I'd got an add I'd have been dead.

Since 40 I've soloed a few dozen collecting the toes and heads and it's doable but I still got killed one time when I got a wolf add and then a second giant... not enough mana to keep rooting/fearing the wolf and I wanted the XP for the second giant that I'd dotted so didn't just FD and let it kill my pet and run away; big mistake in hindsight.

The first two quests require alot of giant killing. The Frost Giant Scouts in The Great Divide drop heads and toes. Speaking as a melee player who likes to solo, the Frost Giant Scouts were about as tough to solo as a Hill Giant or Sand Giant back in Norrath. Some of the casting classes may note differences in types of resistances, but to sword-swinging paladin they felt about the same. Your solo ability is going to depend alot on your class and equipment. If you are able to solo a Hill Giant or Sand Giant, then come give these guys a try. If you don't mind grouping, there seem to be plenty of people fighting the giants who you could group with at an earlier stage.

Go to GD, find a giant group, let them know you need toes and heads... if nobody else needs them... you'll have the first and second shawl in no time flat. The third shawl may take some time, you have to go to EW for that.. and those stupid snow griffins never like to pop. I started this quest at lvl 39. :) If you're lvl 35, just be sure to get a good group that won't let you die :D
