At the end of the previous quest, Rexx Frostweaver told you to speak to his wife Betti regarding the embroidered shawl.

You say, 'Hail, Betti Frostweaver'

Betti Frostweaver says 'Well, hello there, dear, it sure gets cold here, doesn't it? Perhaps I can interest you in a sewing pattern to pass the time and keep you warm.'

You say, 'I am here regarding the embroidered shawl.'

You receive an Embroided Shawl Pattern.

Betti Frostweaver says 'It will be an honor to assist you in fashioning an embroidered shawl. It is a very demanding product and I can see from the look in your eyes that you desire to burn your sewing kit in our furnace, but if you persevere, your efforts will be richly rewarded. When you are ready you must carefully weave a spool of sacred Coldain thread. Take the thread, this pattern, and the silk shawl and carefully embroider the pattern. The result will be most exquisite. Please show me if you manage to create one.'

You say, 'What sacred Coldain thread?'

Betti Frostweaver says 'Take a woven frost giant beard, two siren's hairs, two manticore manes and two Drakkel dire wolf whiskers, and combine them in a sewing kit. The resulting thread will enhance your shawl's power when embroidered in a special pattern.'

The Woven Frost Giant Beard is an uncommon drop from various frost giants across Velious. It is droppable, so you may find it on vendors in Thurgadin.

The NO DROP Siren Hair drops from sirens in Cobalt Scar and Siren's Grotto. This should not be confused with Lock of Siren Hair, which is used for a different quest.

The Manticore Manes are a common drop from A Manticore in Eastern Wastes. These are also droppable and may be found on Thurgadin vendors.

The NO DROP Drakkel Wolf Whiskers drop from A Drakkel Dire Wolf in the Great Divide. They're often left to rot by players killing for faction, so a quick zonewide /shout may net you one or more rather quickly.

Once you have all the components, combine 1 Woven Frost Giant Beard, 2 Siren Hairs, 2 Manticore Manes, and 2 Drakkel Wolf Whiskers in a sewing kit to craft a Spool of Sacred Coldain Thread (trivial 148). Combine the thread with the Embroidered Shawl Pattern and Silk Coldain Prayer Shawl in a sewing kit to craft an Embroidered Coldain Prayer Shawl (trivial 208). If you fail the final combine, you get the shawl back. If necessary, follow the initial dialogue to get another pattern.

Give Betti the Embroidered Coldain Prayer Shawl.

Betti Frostweaver says 'Spectacular artistry! I doubt I could have done better myself. You'll have to forgive me, I know time is short and I tend to carry on. This is the pattern for the making of a rune sacred to our people. It will be our final test of your craftsmanship and will put many of your skills to the test, but I trust you'll find the finished product to be more than worth the effort. Show Gilthan the silk shawl, he will set you on the path. May Brell always be with you outlander.'

With tailoring skill at 189, I succeeded on my second try on the final combine for the sixth shawl.

The spool was trivial, but the FINAL COMBINE WAS NOT TRIVIAL with skill 189.

There are plenty of stories of people who have succeeded on their first try with skill of 120 or 130. Maybe you will be that lucky also.

But even with skill 189, this is no guarantee. Sigh.
Completed.

Success!

Failed on spool 147.
Failed on final combine 157.
Success with tailoring 163 and Geerlok in hand. Unbuffed dexterity also over 100. Good luck everyone... I'm going straight for the 7th now, but I am very proud to be wearing this.

I killed about 15 sirens on the beach below the SS tower, without a single hair drop; however, when I moved to the underwater cave mouth the first two sirens I killed both dropped hair.

What is the recommended tailoring skill you should have before trying to combine?

Any help would be nice. Thanks

Easiest to get to 158. After that, you get into expensive, rare drops to improve at a snail's pace. Recommended that you get 158 and attempt as many times as necessary.

Does the frost giant beard have to have all it's charges?

No, the frost giant beard does NOT have to have it's charges to work in the combine.
Whiskers
# Nov 18 2002 at 10:27 AM Rating: Default
I have noticed whiskers on the following wolves showing these characteristics. First, if there are two wolves walking around together in a 2 wolf pack, one of those wolves will have whiskers. Also, if you see one wolf running, it will have whiskers, I guess because it is "whisking" along. Please do not try to pluck the whiskers of your druid friends when they are in wolf form, as they find it irksome and they need their whiskers to judge spaces that might be too small for them to fit through.

My friends and I were raising CoV faction by pulling dozens of wolves at a time and using two unlimited target PB AE spells to kill them all in one cast.

We killed well over 200 wolves, and got 2 whisker drops in that amount of time... one on the first 170 and one on about number 180 or so.

Good luck :P.

Rrragh!

20 mins to get both whiskers?? Not any more!
I just spent 1hr, must have killed 50 wolves.
Not a whisker! I remember it being very easy
to get these! Has anyone seen them drop?
I get no help in OOC. Thinking of heading to kael.

thanks

They do drop in GD, but not often. While I was killing giants for the first two shawls a Mage was killing the wolves and /ooc-ing when whiskers dropped; whereas I killed a dozen or so myself, and while I got a handy belt to twink my new Ranger with, no whiskers.

with random numbers and a small test set nothing is sure to happen... especially with the apparent 'inconsistency' of the EQ rng.
over a thousand wolves and no whiskers, then it might be a bug.
other than that, it's just the random number generator.

for fun, do /random 1 3 about 50 times and look for small patterns. you'll think you see em, but they aren't really there.

Normally this would be true, However the random number generator in EQ is streaky, this can be observed in many areas of the game IE skill ups often happen in bursts, drops often happen in spurts and fails at combines will often happen in streaks. random numbers generated by pcs are not truly random but are typicly generated by feeding a value from a clock tick through an algorythm, all randoms in eq are handled server side and they may be using some method that sacrifices a more scattered and "random" dispersion in order to be more efficient.

Spool == Tailoring Skill?
# Jun 21 2002 at 8:46 PM Rating: Default
Does making the spool raise your tailoring skill? and if it fails do you lose your shawl? It would seem like an easy way to raise your tailoring so long as you dont lose the shawl with a fail.

You can raise your tailoring skill with the spool or the shawl. However, since the beards are Lore and the siren hairs are rare, there are much better ways to practice tailoring.

You don't use your shawl to make the spool...so no danger there. And you get the shawl back on a failed combine after that (I hate that I know this for a fact :().

ok, now that i have missed post-nerfed, it doesnt say anything about what your tayloring has to be to combine the items together.. blacksmithing isnt required is it?
if anyone has the trivial to combine the 6th shawl, could you post it?
Petitioned about this..

Elpiper I would like to extend a great thanks for your post. I finished my 5th shawl just a few days ago and soon after discovered your post. I also caught wind of a rumor that Verant would be nerfing this on Wednesday the 5th of june with the scheduled patch. So I jumped on it, got my smithing up to 82 and went and bought a full stack of Small Velium to add to the around 10 I had. I must admit with my tailoring being only 118 and my smithing only at 82 it cost me a bit in failures BUT WHOOT, I made my 6th shawl. So again THANKS.. didn't need to hunt Sirens YET..

If Verant nerfs this tommorrow I am sorry for anyone that hadnt used this in time. I made the thread on my 51 cleric also because his smithing was already high enough.

First off:
Plz read the post about " an eazier way to complete quest " by Elpiper ... it WORKZ ! It may be alittle spendy, but its worth it IMHO. O ya, the Sandalwood can be purchased in Thurg.

Second:
I looked at the message when I finally succeded an it said I could no longer advance my skill at this. When I started my Tailoring was 154, I got 2 increases from all my fails an at 156 it gave me the Trivail Msg.

Hope this helps in any way, shape or form ... lookn at the 7th shawl now. *sigh* almost to 8th shawl =D
Hand it in

get faction, exp., and a shawl pattern in return.
what do you do with the shawl!?

6th shawl in to betti? I really need to know
En easier way to do 6th shawl
# May 20 2002 at 2:57 PM Rating: Excellent
I didn't see this posted here anywhere here, so I thought I'd share. Hurry up before Verant nerfs it!

I finished my 6th shawl yesterday... after which I proceeded to destroy my Drakkel Wolf Whiskers and the one Siren's Hair I had accumulated so far. I also sold my Woven Frost Giant Beard to a vendor and still have 4 Manticore Manes in the bank. I used none of these to complete the Embroidered Prayer Shawl!

Here is what you need:

- 2 Velium Bits
- Sandalwood
- Shawl Pattern (given to you by Betti Frostreaver in Thurg)
- 5th Shawl

Velium bits are made by combining 2 small pieces of velium (the stackable kind - but don't stack them to combine) and a Coldain Velium Temper in a forge - this is trivial for me at 82 Blacksmithing.

- You can obtain the small pieces of velium in CC, Velks, ToFS and Icewell Keep.

- You can buy the Coldain Velium Temper from Nimren Stonecutter in Thurg (shop at 41, -111 near mines) at about 40pp, depending on CHA.

- Sandalwood, an alchemy supply, can be bought in Shadow Haven from either Kolburn Inglewort (176, 632) or Zimloro Jalobottle (-414, 1426). Each piece costs around 140pp, again depending on CHA. You can also buy this in Cabillis, Freeport, Felwithe, Grobb, Halas, Kaladim, Katta, RV and Shar Vahl.

Make 2 Velium Bits (cost for 2 about 80p) and buy 1 piece of Sandalwood (cost 140p). Combine these in a forge to make a Spool of Sacred Coldain Thread. I succeeded on first try with 82 smithing.

Then simply combine the Spool of Sacred Coldain Thread with the shawl pattern and your 5th shawl in your coldain tanner's kit to obtain your 6th shawl! I succeeded on first try with 142 tailoring and holding a tinkered sewing contraption.

SO, if you have a bit of money to spend and dread the thought of hunting sirens, do the above before they nerf it. It's gotta be a mistake by Verant, right? They wouldn't make something easier for us, right??!??!

Did it also, thanks a ton Elpiper. with 130 smithing, the thread and pieces were trivial, and with 113 tailoring, the final combine wasnt trivial yet. Got it on second try w/o any other help (like that geerlock thing)...saved me a lot of time farming sirens :)

I tried this new recipe with tailoring 144, smithing 105 and intelligence 253 (being enchanter helps here, lvl 59 fyi).

The velium bits were trivial, the spool of sacred coldain thread wasnt trivial at 105. I failed once.

I failed at the first attemps and succeeded at the 2nd attempt, oh my, I am now a happy owner of the 6th shawl, thanks for the information that I found here.

Got it on the second try using that method, with a tailoring skill of 135 and a Geerlok device. Smithing was trivial and worked both time, but I have a skill of 175 in that. Felt good destroying my backpacks full of quest garbage I had farmed.

OMG, I logged out to come here and check the details of the combine after I got my 2nd sirens hair, saw your post and said what the hell, I got 50 k in the bank whats a couple hundred pp, combined your recipe in the forge and wa lah!! much to my amazement the thread appeared, put that in my kit with the pattern and # 5 and # 6 do I have... dont even mess with the other recipe it is do able but why do it, the time you spend to get the stuffs you could easily kill orc pawns in EC and come up with 200 pp to buy the stuff for this easier way

Elpiper where in hell did you figure this out?
Grrr, but why the heck didn't you figure this out before I spent the time farming the hair the manes the whiskers etc ;p

AMAZING, it really works, if your on morell thule and Im on give me a tell ill buy the stuff for ya to prove it
