The scarring left by Veeshan as she clawed Norrath so long ago is more evident in Cobalt Scar than just about any other area in Norrath. Large amounts of water sit in the gouges she left behind, and now the sirens of the Grotto use its cover to lure unknowing ship crews into protruding rocks.

On the land, wyverns and drakes of Skyshrine fiercely protect their habitat while a clan of Othmir critters make their home on the beach below the cliffside.

I'm not sure if anyone still or will read this, lol... but! I went here with my Druid around 43? and I solo'd the Wyvern's no problem. I found an area where the Cobalt Drake (and the named one) wouldn't attack and I rooted them and just blasted those things.

I just went down the edge of the Mountain and by the time I was done with both sides they had already spawned where I had started.

The exp. was decent at the lower levels, but not as much at 46 (They still con a dark or light blue). But the reason I love this place so much is because between the gems that drop I average around 250-300pp.
(A few times they have dropped some pretty decent armor/weapons that I save for my SK)

HOW TO GET THERE (on a budget!)
# Feb 21 2008 at 2:32 PM Rating: Excellent
If you cant get a port to Cobalt Scar and dont want to pay the 200p for a guild hall crystal, there is a shortcut to running there. Normally you would have to run GD-EW-KD-WL-SS->Cscar (IF you have the key!)

Take the POK book to Great Divide. Head way south and follow the river to the end.

There is a tiny model of a castle there and if you click on it, it will zone you to Plane of Mischief.

Once you zone to POM dont move. Look straight ahead at the trees. start clicking from where you are on all the trees to your front. One of them will say "You are too far away to do that". Now just run up to THAT tree. This short little run is about 50 meters. There are no roamers or mob spawns that will attack you unless you run too far or get lost while trying to move forward in a straight line!

This tree has been enchanted to be the "port-key" to Cscar. It dumps you in the middle of the lake though, so levitate is handy if you dont want to swim ashore or fight off sharks and angry sea-chests. Dont forget to surface, because you zone about 20 feet below the water and can drown if you are a bad swimmer or forget that you need air to breathe.

If you are headed to Sirens Grotto or Western Wastes then you are actually closer to there than if you had taken a druid port to Cscar.

I have used this shortcut many many times. Just dont forget you have to get home somehow. Cheapest way to do that is log out for a few hours and hit the 'GO HOME' key when relogging in

The "legitimate" way to walk out of Cobalt Scar is through Skyshrine. Inside the top of the tower (with the five wyvern spawns) there is a central post that you click on to zone into Skyshrine.

You will zone in surrounded by mobs on Claw of Veeshan faction (the one that anything with wings in Cobalt Scar is on), so if you're KoS, be invisible.

At 50, my wizard friend started porting me to Cobalt Scar on a regular basis. The money there is quite good and the XP is still great at 51. Now, I am going to be a Baron before I get to 52, so the XP ratio does not change in CS for quite a while for me.
My strategy is quite simple:
As soon as I zone in, I cast my best Alliance spell on the Wyverns, this gets me from RtA to dubious, which means, they don't really mind about me.
Then I calm and pull with slow, let me pet take the aggro, Incapacitate, then Choke. When my pet starts getting hit, I simply cast Beserker Spirit (mana-only-Rune) on him. That's about it.
Now, if only someone cared to help me with the named ones...

Since noone mentioned it, I figured I will share:
one of the trees in the forest in Mischief (I have no way to explain which one... except that it is in line between the entrance spawn point and the fake bridge to get into the castle, and there generally is a bixie close to it; I wish I had the excat loc... but 5 min of patience and clicking and you should find it) brings into CS. Since I have been soloing a bit in CS and Dragon Necropolis lately, I was happy to find out that is a much shorter and safer route to the scar.

To summarize: run to the Great Divide, follow the river (in the direction opposite to Thurgadin) to the "dollhouse". Click on the little dollhouse, and you will be in PoM. Run into the forest, click on the tree, and you are in Cobalt Scar.

find the river.
Head to the end of it.
Opposite side of the cave from thurgadin.
Should be no other buildings for you to click on.
At the very end of the river, not the thurgadin side, but the other end.
You will see a tiny tiny castle sitting at the river source.

First, if you are not KOS to skyshrine dragons, it is safe to port in here. If you are KOS, it is very possible to get a cobalt drake aggroing you on port in. They have a nasty AOE. However, if you get the porter to invis you first you should be fine.

Second, hides are fairly I'd say maybe 1 out of every 5 to 10 kills drops a hide. Plus they drop the velious quest gems and other decent loot.

third, Cobalt cod can be fished in.... Cobalt scar only.

Fishing is fairly safe, if you are not KOS to the othmir (nobody starts KOS to them, AFAIK), and as long as Kelorak'Dar (dragon) is not up.

You probably can duo these guys. The pally will most likely end up playing healer as much as tanking. Wyverns don't have a lot of HP, but hit fairly hard, up to about 90 pts per hit.

Your worst problem will be getting the spawns, since 3 (2 even, if they are efficient) quadding druids can pretty much keep the whole wyvern area stripped of pops.

Looking on the zone connections map for Velious, I see the connections from EW to CS, but there is a notation between Skyshrine and CS that says 'locked'. Do you in fact have to run from EW and can you get in from Skyshrine or is there another portal somewhere closer, or a boat? I can kill Ulthork easily enough in EW and would like to capitalize on the tusk quest, but it would be pretty easy to die on the way without port or some safer mode/route.

Don't bother to reply if your answer is 'get a port' cause I have already figured that one out. I need to be able to get there on my own, when I want to, in one piece.

Hey,

there is a way to zone into CS from skyshrine. It is indeed locked. there is a quest you can do in skyshrine to get the key which involves some fighting in kael. if you look at the quests for skyshrine and kael you should be able to find it,

I have a ton of ulthork tusks that I would like to turn in, but have been reluctant to travel here. Factions are so confusing on this continent. I've killed a LOT of ulthorks, so my faction with othmir is probably okay. What else do I need to raise factions with to be able to either run to CS. (Haven't found the CS port spell yet). I've been killing Coldain to raise kromrif/kromzek faction because I would like to do do some of the Kael armor quests eventually. So, I'm KOS to coldain but still con threateningly to the Giants. Will either of those factions help/hurt? Thanks in advance for helping to clear up the confusing factions here.

Your facton will be fine with the othmir as it starts out indifferent and if you have killed enough ulthorks you very well may be ally by now. You will be KOS to wyverns and drakes unless you have killed a TON of giants. Simply port in and cast invis and you should be ok though. Portal site is usually pretty safe. When invis run down to beach and hand in tuskd to chief.

Ehh...money's good, better amoung 1 person than 3-4. Mobs can drop 5pp. Mostly you'll see 1 drop 4-5pp, 2 drop nothing but gold, and 1 drop 1-2pp in a average quad. They ain't HGs. Kill 4 and you'll prolly see 1-2 hides, possibly 1 quest/50pp cash loot gem. So let's say you kill 1 per minute. Drop an average of 2pp per kill. In an hour you may be able to do 50 if you have a decent group. That's prolly gonna be about 250pp in cash loot split among 4 people, so you're looking at bout 60pp in cash loot each in an hour. You're also looking at about 10 gem drops per hour where you're killing 50. 1/5 drop rate is about right. Gems sell for 50pp a piece, so that's 500pp in gem loot. Spilt that 750 pp 4 ways and you get....little less than 200pp per hour. Add in any additional income you make from wyvvern hides and the incredible amount of wrods/runes that drop and you'd be lucky to make 250 an hour here grouping. Meanwhile your average druid makes 500pp an hour here. Just go kill HGs/IGs if you want cash :P, but watch for druids there too LOL

Ok. This is one of my most favorite zones in the game, and I am an expert on it, so I feel the need to share my knowledge with anyone who may wish to refer to this portion of the CS discussion. Let's start with mobs...best reason to come here. People don't group here, normally, unless they're mid 40's or feel the need to kill named. Mostly people solo the wyvvern. They do not gie any faction hits, are quadable (i.e. train on top of each other easily, continue moving despite having almost no hp as long as there are 2 alive), and give good exp till lvl 53-54. You CAN do this with bad CoV, just pull them down from the beach and quad them there. Zone supports 4 druids/wizards without clarity, max. I'd say they spawn in about 20 minutes..something like that..hit for up to mid 100's if you actually let them nail you, and have maybe 3-5k hp, not sure on that, but the druid AoE can do enough to damage them at lvl 49 with like 190 wisdom and not many mana items. once they snare-lock you MUST be close to the last one or he will bug back to his spawn point and start regening like a lvl 10 twink in a fungi. They have high Cold Resist, no other resists worth mentioning. Drops include pp, words/runes/int caster junk; quest gems, wyvvern meat (good for +3 sv magic food), and wyvvern hides, useful for 200+ tailoring. The gems are (other than cash loot gems) : Chipped Onyx Sapphire-Priest legs, Jaundiced Gem-Priest arms, Flawed Topaz-Caster Arms, Nephrite-Caster Legs, Flawed Emerald-Melee arms, Flawed Sea Sapphire-Melee legs. All mobs in CS drop these gems cept for fish and greenie stuff. You can sell these to PCs if you get lucky or merchants for 40-50pp if you're lazy. If you're into quadding and are 49-55 these are the ticket for you. Nice bugged rock by the SG zone to hide under and med if you're on a pvp server and hate to get jacked while you med up. Make sure you bring batwings as lev is a must for pulling, make sure it's before sow in case the drakes dispell your buff, you want lev to drop rather than SoW.

Now on to drakes. These are nasty, only reason to fight them is for tailoring supplies. They CAST, not proc, an AoE dispell and cold attack for close to 500 without any resist gear. Easiest way to kill them is just to root/DoT and make sure they snared. They de-aggro easier than any mob I've EVER seen. Basically, depending on what spell you are using you can actually still hit them at a range that they've deaggroed at :P They also drop low lvl spells and stupid things like the druid WL port. No idea what the meat is for, hides are for various things like the +8 wis tailored belt ect.

Othmir. Othmir are indiff NCPs on the beach in CS. They are meant to be killable, since they drop good armor. They do give you a faction hit though, so you will eventually get KOS, and they assist each other unlike wyvvern, drakes ect. I don't personally hunt these cuz of the Lodi, OPT quests, though you can raise your faction by slaughtering Ulthorks in EW, Bulthar in CS, or either of these mob arch-types in SG. They drop Crusty armor, which I only see pallies wear, but it looks pretty kewl on half-elves :) Knocks down your cha, if I remember. These are mostly sowed by the shammies in their camps, so you had better snare, root these guys right away. They hit hard cuz I tried to keel em once, wasn't pretty. There's a lvl 55 or so Chief, doesn't drop anything decent as far as I've seen him go down, also don't whack the named ones that are green, those are merchants and people nee them to buy food/water and sell gems to. The Othmir give out the Lodi Shield quest, and the Othmir Prexus Totem quests. They will also take 4 ulthork/bulthar tusks and sometimes give you BDs, diamonds, jacinth if you have Ally faction with them.

Bulthar. These are a pain in the ass, they have a freakin' ton of hp, good MR, and they really really like to assist each other and train. If the Herdmaster is up and sowing them, they can wipe out the beach. Only reason to kill is for the tusks to give to Othmir, as they simply have too much hp for their lvl to be a mana-efficient kill for exp. I have seen chanters charm one and sic it on the other...I have also seen a LTO of chanters asking for rezzes, so do this at your own peril. They give good Othmir/Snowfang Gnoll faction and lower Bulthar faction.

Sirens. No one hunts sirens. it's like hunting Evil Eyes with no PBB drops. They can charm you with 100+ MR, and make you exp kill your friends. nasty little wenches, they hang out kinda far in the water and never come to the beach unless someone pulls them there. If you see one camp to clear aggro or gate....or blow a good bit on mana on a barely blue mob with poor loot.

Haunted Treasure Chests. Lot of hp....bad loot. You aggro these if you go near the ships underwater, so don't go near them. The rope is for a rogue quest, so if you want to quest kill one as it ALWAYS drops the rope.

Coldwater Barracuda. These drop the livers for the Rough Silver Chain quest. Bout 1/20 drop rate, maybe worse. Like 10 are up at one time but it's hard to kill 2 in a row without a shark/siren aggro. Green to 50+.

Sharks........drop shark meat ect.......light blue..tiny exp at 50+...hit harder than they should and really upset casting since you're in the water, use lev to fight them if you have to.

Named mobs. Yvolcarn is the named wyvvern, he is pretty much unable to be immobilized, snared ect. he can be feared. He is easy to aggro and will always be up in place of 1 regular wyvvern. Know where he is and avoid him. he will not summon, doesn't hit hard, but has a ton of hp and is MR higly. Drops drixie remains and gives a nasty CoV factiob hit. Remains are for a kewl ring with good tunare faction that has like 6 sub-quests in WL.

Azuredrake. Drops nada, is sometimes up, has a large aggro range and will dispell you at the drop of a hat. easily killable and I reccommend you do so if you'll be staying in CS for any period of time and are KOS to CoV. has more hp than normal drakes, can be rooted and snared and everything else.

If anyone out there would like to correct me or ask for any additional information about Cobalt Scar, please let me know.

At 53 most of the wyverns would be green to you. I also wouldn't try to solo the Bulwars as they are extremely tough for their lvl. The sirens charm so if you have a decently high MR you might be able to take one at a time. The haunted seachests are tough but doable at 53 solo I would think for a tank class.

#Anonymous, Posted: Aug 17 2001 at 2:06 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) You tweeks are great, lots of talkin bout useless loot. I was here jus to cross over to Grotto in order to hunt gems, because Velks is so over camped, i mean have you ever seen 6 58's beating on 1 50levl spider all day, woot big fun. Verant better make quest gems no drop soon. So I'm trying to get to grotto and got trained near underwater tunnel by lots of Sirens, they charmed me so much that they were healing me too, i got lucky. So beware when trying to avoid the meglomaniac uber greed mongers, it is actually dangerous where they are not camping.

Othomer (spelling) the little otter guys drop crusty armor. I believe you can also farm it in um... whats that zone Scarlet desert??? but im not sure if those drop it. if your a druid use harmony of nature, (NOT AE). regular harmony fails.

First off, know that the Cobalt Drake AoE is not a proc, but rather a spell. If you can keep the mob feared/blinded, they'll never get it off...

Hunting the drakes themselves is child's play, but risky solo. The best way to do it is to duo them, with a fearer and a snarer (dual Necromancers with rogue pets work wonders here). Get all your buffs in place, especially any cold-resist buffs. FEAR THE DRAKE, FIRST. This is very critical, as if the pets are tanked first, you and they are going to be hit by the AoE, and nothing's worse than having DMF dispelled while you're hovering over the cliff (snickers at a collegue of hers). Also, try to time the snare so that it connects shortly after the fear hits. If only fear lands, the drake will *usually* wander towards the othmir, so not as much chance of trains. Whatever you do, ALWAYS KEEP THE DRAKE FEARED/BLINDED! You can piss off the entire zone if your drake gets it's AoE off, so watch yourself.

PS, the AoE never did more than 300 points of damage to me, usually much less, with only a 50 cold resist (unbuffed)

For you necros out there, here's how to kill a drake without burning to much mana(low downtime means you can get ahead of those damn druids).
get a nice distance away(the ae does hurt).
/pet attack, dooming darkness(not cascading, why burn mana when you don't need to), BoD, sit and watch pet rip it a new @#%^, pet will come out with 75% give or take(49 pet with augment on, use thief if you wish to fear kite but 49 rules till emissary). Fear is not needed pet can taunt them so easy. Plus fear(although pathing ain't bad here) can cause aggro probs when you don't want it.
49 pet is a warrior, use him like one, these drakes r wimps.

I just want to make a comment about the the drakes only doing a 300 dmg AoE spell. I'm a lvl 52 druid with about 70 cold resist and 50+ magic resists and these drakes were pulling off AoE damage of 250 to 500 dmg per cast, I was down to about 2 bubs of hp before I gated. Just a word of warning.

Maybe the amount of your AC has a bearing on amount of damage from the AOE spell?

COBALT DRAKES NERFED
# May 16 2001 at 4:05 AM Rating: Default
You can no longer run the cobalt drakes to the Othmir camps on the sea shore. Even if the Othmir get hit by the AOE, they will now ignore the drakes and you will die. Best bet now is to either gate out or zone if you aggro one you cant handle.

Other gems

I have been hunting this zone alot lately and I am getting some gems that are not on the quest lists for the any of the Velious Armors. The ones I can think of off the top of my head are Flawed Lava rubies, Flawed fire opals, imperfect diamonds, chipped black marble, and several others I am not remembering. Anyone know what these are for? I am hanging on to them because I am sure that there is SOMETHING to do with them, I just dont know what.

Found one thing, people tend to avoid here as they believe it to be a high level area. I can assure you that a group or even half group (with the right classes) can hunt here happily.

A group of 39 Ranger, 43 Rogue, 44 cleric and 46 warrior fought happily here and in Skyshrine and we had no deaths.

Later one 51 druid and the ranger and rogue fought again in CS quite happily killing the haunted seachest for hours.

Just thought i'd try to get more lower levels in the zone and surrounding areas to make it easier for me to get a group ;)

RE: Wiz port spell

You can buy the wiz port to Cobalt (and all other velious wizzy ports) from some merchants slightly near the entrance in skyshrine, so either get your faction up with them or get an enchanter to buy them for you.

yep, can be really good gems like jacinth, diamond, blue diamond and apparently run of the mill ones like a ruby.

Not bad when you go around and buy some tusks for 9 gold in thuragin, or kill a few ulthorks and get some.

yes, ulthork tusks he asks for, anywhere

Yep. He asks for Ulthork tusks so any item:

Ulthork Tusks

works.

The only ones I've seen so far are from east wastes, there are none in cobolt. I hear there are some walrus type men in sirens grotto but I doubt if people hunt there much ; )

I have noticed no higher incidence in the dropping of the tusks from the blue to a 53 ulthork man 0'wars in far southwest eastern wastes and the very green level 30 or so ulthorks way in the middle north near the giant Warden camp.
