I can take these guys with my 36 Druid (untweeked, Imbued Mithril Studded Armor set(WIS 139)). I snared, DoTed, rooted and medded. Without medding during the battle, I would not have had the mana to be able to take these guys.

I've probably killed 6 of them with no deaths/zoning, but it takes all my mana to do so.
What's up with the stuns?
# May 26 2004 at 11:26 AM Rating: Default
Everything I have read indicates you can NOT stun giants or giant family mobs like cyclopses. My level 38 pally didn't even try to stun them, why waste the mana? I went in with Temp and Brell's Steadfast Aegis on. I only had to use LoH once when I got aggroed in a snowstorm and didn;t see him coming, started the fight around 75%.

Using a massive dragonclaw shard my high elf pally with strength pushing 200 was hitting around 90-110 with fairly common double taps. Still, starting each fight with 100% health, the highest I ended with was 50% and the lowest was 7%. These are serious undercons. All were dark blue to me and several came close to wiping me. Good news is I hit 39 on them and go tonight for my new spells, including a 300 hp heal which should make things go better.

I also bailed a level 35 ranger's butt out of the fryer last night when he took on a wolf that conned yellow to him. Burned half my mana healing him as he took the wolf out. Good news is I got to practice my rezzes quite a few times last night on people who likely read this thread and figured, yeah my level 35 can solo the scouts no problem.

At lvl 37, paladin, I found these fairly easy to solo. Starting with a root - followed by a few arrows at long range to drop em down to about 75% health - then when the root wore off - pelting em with stun and lots of hits. Had to get temp casted first though - and it helps to have a strength spell. My health never dropped below 50%. I stayed near the POK book though just in case it got ugly.

I solo these very well with my 34 necro. Even double kite when Im at full mana. Easy to do and the exp is great. Basic trick is this. Go for the Root/DoT tactic. If the giant is breaking root a lot or is resisting root, switch over to fear kiting. To do 2 at once, get one that root sticks on and DoT the mess out of it. Then grab another and fear kite. So simple.

Spells I use and have memmed while doing this.
Dooming Darkness
Invoke Fear
Boil Blood
Heart Flutter
Venom of the Snake
Vampiric Curse
Root
Feign Death

BTW - Started soloing these at 32. Necros own.

I'm kinda surprised the Shamans are having a hard time with these mobs. I was soloing them at 37 without too much difficulty - and I'm anything but a power gamer. The trick is SLOW, as always. Pull them with slow, let the pet taunt them enough so you can cast scourge, and cannibalize for safety, At about 70%, cast envenomed breath and wail on in there. With Fury and quickness up, they could hammer me down to about 40% health, but I haven't really felt in danger yet. I'm level 40 now and these guys are a piece of cake. Beserkers are another story though.

Will the ones in Iceclad Ocean drop toes?

I can solo them there pretty easily as a 35 wiz. BOF, NUK, NUK, Repeat. OK exp, but i'm after toes. Just wonderin if I'm wasting my time.

Updated

Ok ... I killed about 50 giants in ICO and saw no toes, heads or anything nice like that. Zoned over into EW and got toes on the first three kills.

I don't believe that toes drop in Iceclad.

I've killed a scout solo at 36 with KEI and a focused earth pet with DS. I had to heal the pet once during the battle and finished with two blue's of mana. It was not easy, and I have only been able to repeat the feat once since. Sometimes I'll pull one at a slightly higher level and I can only get 2-3 nukes off before my pet is minced meat. Thankfully my fire nukes hit for 300+ each time and are rarely fully resisted. It's better xp to bash 3 dire wolves in the time and effort it takes me to kill one of these!

I've been soloing the Scouts the last few days since lvl 36+ and haven't found them to be that tuff. I make sure my pet's taunt is OFF then approach the desired scout making sure no wolves or other scouts are close by...getting an add is bad news but I usually pull to the little plateau near the PoK book or plateau near the giant fort close to the zone for quick escape if needed.

I pull with Scourge then hit him with root as he runs at me...if root resists I send in pet to block him while I try to reroot...the pet can take 3-4 attempts before it dies but it usually sticks...if not either way I hit it with envenomed breath [venom of snake at 39 works much better] if root has held then I hit it with one Shock of Tainted to speed things up and cannabalize as much as possible before root breaks which is not long usually. By then it hates me big time so I run circles with regen/chloroplast going [make sure its up before u pull] and pet nipping at its heels when it gets to 2 bbls of health I turn and reroot it. It's hitting on me but I can usually cast through the blows till it sticks without too much danger and back off to shock it agn to get it to the "flee" stage then mop it up. The only reason I turn to reroot it with it hitting on me is to keep up my defence skills. Once you hit 39 it's a breeze and I found that if I get a quick C3 fix before I start [paying about 50p]then what I make off the giants in cash and wepns easily more than makes up for the c3 cost.

Now that I'm 40 it's all gravy and can kill them back to back...if only I could find them that fast all the time. One word of caution, the beserk giants are a lot more challenging...they hit harder/faster and can run as fast as my sow pretty much so once they get a hold of me it can be tuff to get away.

Hope this helps some of you shammies.

Well, I gave these guys a try tonight, and it's possible to solo them as a 37 Necro, but tough; I was root-dotting them and it's one of the few times I've actually had to renew DoTs in the process as they took so long to die. What with root breaking very fast and getting the heck beaten out of me and my pet whenever the giant caught up with me, I ended the fight with 20% mana and not a lot of XP.

Fear-kiting may work better, but I'd rather not take the risk of too many adds; one extra giant a I'll be a dark blue splat on the ice.

I am level 36 enchantress atm, and I can solo Hill giants easy with charm, then after my charmed HG kills one, I break the charm and root nuke it when it is down to about 20% health... so I get 2 solo kills fast and easy with about 50 plat in loot... when it comes to the frost giant scouts, I can not even take them with one other(healer or paladin little less in levels than I). They break charm way to fast, HG I can keep charmed for 5-8 min, FG... only about 2-3 tops out of 5 trys. My cha is 158 and they give hard time... will not come back to here to solo for some time

Last night I decided to go down and poke around Great Divide a little bit. I found that if your careful and can single pull one a beastlord can solo these things at level 40. I set up myself close to Eastern Wastes zone line just in case if something went wrong. Casted Spirit of Yekan,Yekan's Quickening and Spirit of Scorpion on pet. Medded to FM,waited for one that was alone. I casted Envenomed Breath on it and sent the pet in and sat down to med. When pet got to around 2 bulbs of health, casted Yekan's Recovery on him and re-medded. Fight took around 5 minutes and costed me about three to four bulbs of mana.
Fight was easy just make sure that you dont let your pet get below 2 bulbs of health.Only hard part is single pulling one since I noticed that most of these tend to travel in groups of two or where a single one is another is walking twords its direction.

I am a 31 bard on Lanys server and I started charm kiting these today. Did it most of the day with no problem. I would say that on the red mobs charm lands roughly 75% of the time perhaps a little less but with selos up it's no big deal. I also have done both of the elites at the bridge. cha is only 102 so they are pretty easy.

These are easy for a 44 Necro with any level pet. I keep Call of Bones up full time and keep pet augmented and spirit armored.

Pull with Dooming Darkness, Send in Pet, Fear, Tap as needed to keep health up. Sit until FM. I'm getting about 1/3 to 1/2 blue per kill.

Toes seem to be dropping rarely, though, so I may have to upgrade to the berserkers for those.

This other beard is for a quest you get in IC from Grizlin Bloodfang. The beard is given to a gnome pirate near the outpost who gives you an indestructible rope for this quest. That's all I know.

I am merely posting confirmation that this "other" berd the frost giant scout beard drops, I also looted one earlier this week and it actually dropped from an elite in IC at the Dragon Bridge. (thought it odd.. a scout beard dropping from an elite. Then again, these are nothing like the elites in GD)

And a totally random item I found on the ground by the bank in Thurg (someone probably dropped it to save their sanity) I found "a primitive totem" Anyone know what that is for?

firstly yes they do resist root 1in 3 times i cast
secondly they will kill your pet quickly.Thirdly they do hit hard. Fourthly don't worry about u'r cold nukes hehe a 270 nuke hit for 13-36. That's the bad news. Good news u can cast 4-5 poison/disease dots& debuffs in the time pet dies they are a bit slow to respond. NB should be soloable at 38 but had bard group & were pretty
easy kills just be carefull to only take on 1 at time.

Yes they will kill your pet quickly, yes they hit hard, and yes they can resist. But if soloed more effectively a Shaman will own these guys.
I'm a 40th level Shaman and this is how I solo the giants. I park my pet with /taunt off, then I find a Giant and pull with Malisement (so VoS, root, and/or slow have a better chance of sticking). I then run for it.....I run way out of my pet's assist range (puppy can be a pain when I'm trying to root/rot. I Root the Giant (I rarely get resists when Malisement sticks), then I stack Scourge and VoS on him to gain mucho aggro. If root breaks I re-root and Cannibalize while Giant is rotting. VoS will wear off then I re-apply VoS, by now the Giant is pissed and wants to tear me apart, after root breaks I run toward my pet and I command him to attack or if I've been hit already he'll do it on his own. I then run in a big circle and let my pet chew the Giant up from behind. I then turn and beat on the Giant with my spear or hammer when he's in "Flee-mode". They can take quite a bit of mana but killing them is fun, it will get easier once I hit 44. Plus I feel all cocky now that I can solo a Frost Giant at 40 (something I couldn't do with my SK until 50+).

These guys are soloable by a 34-35ish druid. I admit I am twinked (a little bit). Got 200 wis in total. Make sure you SOW yourself, buff yourself with SKIN and BABRCOAT, cuase most probably you will get hit at the beginning.
So, be4 u kite a giant, find a spot near an ocean where nobody will disturb you and your "friend" (i hate the damn snow dervishes joinining in our private chat). So the first thing is SNARE of course, most probably they will resist (resisted 4-5 of my first snares till it finally stick on him) - thats when u will get bashed couple of times - giants are big, with long hands and feet, so they reach far.
so, snare till it sticks, DOT, nuke
Dont try to root unless u have a lot of mana, also I dont recommend using FURY of the AIR spell. sure it does almost twice as much dmg as combust, but it gets resisted more.
I soloed only one per mana bar, maybe i can solo one giant and a wolf if i dont get that many resists. But basicaly speaking be ready to spend your whole mana bar (I actually ran out of mana, but the giant was low on health and was standing still snaring so it didnt cause me much trouble).
Good luck soloing them, and try not to kite them in the open, find a place where there is something behind your back (ocean or a wall that nothing can climb)

I have soloed them with my pal since lvl 37.
They are VERY tough and up until 39 required me to heal (and sometimes LOH) myself in combat. (Thank Quellious for stuns)

Granted, I am suited in quested armor of Ro (not twinked or purchased) and weilding the Arbitor's Greatsword. (30/43). With 200str and those weapons you should be able to solo them without a problem.

Good luck :) and bind close just in case.

My 30 pally is in GD killing these a little, and when my Stun spell hits it says 'your target was not affected my the stun portion of your spell' or a similar message, can't remember. Resistant creatures can be the worst have fought a wooly mammoth at lvl 33 that conned low blue and had him resist 6 out of 7 snares and 3 out of 4 roots wish verant would make this spells a little less resistable as they are the main part of a druids battle plan.. I (41 Mage) tried soloing some of these in GD (had killed a few in IC so wanted to see if they were any different here). I killed a couple (fairly close fights), and on the third one, he got my pet so I ran him around (have Jboots) gaining enough room to toss a Cinder Bolt at 'im. I was close to dead (about 1 hit left), gained a bunch of ground, and tried to cast another bolt. He got to me just as my spell wore off *BLAM!* he hit me and I bolted him at the same time. He went down...I looked up and saw NO red in my hit points. I immediately switched to inventory to see I had only 8 hp left! Man that was a good fight! >:D

I have tried (successfully) to solo thes as a lvl 39 and 40 druid. Root/Dot works fairly well. But for the same mana I can quad dire wolves for much more xp.

Also the Frost Giant Scouts in GD seem to con the same, but are much tougher for me. Snare is resisted more, and an angry giant is almost SoW fast. Root, if not resisted, only lasts a very short while. I haven't yet found Ro's Firey Sundering which may help with the debuff.
Magician vs Frost Giants
# Sep 27 2001 at 9:36 PM Rating: Default
I used an earth elemental pet at lvl 41 to solo these... a little risky, but worth it.
Pull with malaise, send in pet already buffed with burnout 1, and barrier of cumbustion.
Cast rain of lava, AND rain of spikes... during the rains heal your pet. Cast cinder bolt, heal pet, cinder bolt again.

Lvl 44 is much easier... using a fire elemental, pull fg with malaisement, send in pet, cast Elemental Maelstrom... wait till fg is almost at half (or heal your pet) cast shock of swords.

Should be no problem if hardly any resists... if too many resists: gate!

46 Rogue here, I can solo them(yes with difficulty) I'm not twinked at all, except for a Fungi Tunic(good to have higher friends), and they take me down to 1 red bub or so. Sometimes, if they're lucky, they win. So, yes, its possible, but not really worth it.

48 rogue twink... you are dogmeat for them, no matter how twinked you get you can't solo. 1300 Hps is nothing, my shaman has more lol they are way undercon, L33 hitting for 90? hmm, just count how many 90 hits can you take. You get hit for max a lot, rogues suck defending. No matter how much AC you have I can bet a warrior in banded can tank better. Unless you do 2x more dmg then them you dead, they have 2ce your HPs.

I've solo'ed these pretty easily as a level 40 druid. Just make sure you don't aggro something else on you or you may not have enough mana.

I've also solo'ed the elites, but only with Gift of Magic and Clarity. Wouldn't have had enough mana otherwise.

The scouts have something just north of 2600 hp. The only two elites I fought were closer to 3000.

However, in my opinion, they aren't worth the mana (unless you want the faction -- though I only received faction messages on the scouts, not the elites). For the mana I have to use to bring one of these down, I could get 2 to three times the exp by quad-kiting the cougars (assuming I can find four blue ones).
soloable by rogue twink?

Scouts are excellent experience for my 46 SK. In addition to the items mentioned here, they can also drop Drakkel-Forged Hammers and Drakkel Ice Reavers. The Ice Reaver is actually a fairly good weapon at 27/45 with an Ice Rend proc that works from first level.

I hear alot about how easy a mob was to kill by a druid or necro..kiting. But what about us melee classes..we get no respect. We are sought after by casters only to keep them from gettin hit. Will someone please post how they killed this mob that is a melee class. Can a 36 Shadowknight or any other melee class solo this sucker or what ?

as a lvl 51 human monk these still con light blue to me i hunt them mostly for faction they are tough for me i never had to fd to escape death but have had to use my mend and stone stance dicipline in soloing fights, as for me not twinked just a fbss, 1424 hitpoints,wu's quivering staff 23/28 2hb. also i do not fear them to increase my odds of them collecting friends while i'm beating the back of his ankles. on average i have 2 blue bubbles of life left from soloing these, but everyone knows monks are not made to stand toe-toe hope this info helps :-)

As a 42 Pally, with an Argent Defender and FBSS, I can solo these pretty easy, but the risk aint worth the reward. These suckers can be damn resisty when the want to be and they can sneak up on you when your busy with another. The point is - group your @$$ if your melee. You'll get xp faster, safer and have no boring down time waitin for those red bubs to go back up.

I know that SK pets are not that great, but if a mob is feared, they add damage. So, don't let them tank for you, but do send them in when you you finally get your fear off.

Me as 42 Paladin can solo them without use of LoH with a Mith2Hander.
But its very close sometimes, and i only hunt the giants if LoH is ready.
I kill them in Great Divide

Either I had an incredible run of bad luck, or these things have extremely strong magic resistance. Or maybe it's necro-specific resistance, as someone posted that they were easy for a 37 druid. Fear and dark just didn't stick at 38. Mostly fear, as my 45 druid friend was doing the snaring and I only darked when we got an extra. I wonder whether there's a difference between zones, or if they've been changed, because the druid I was with got some resists on snare even at 45. The ones my spells wouldn't stick on were in GD.

40 sk with approximately 860 AC and Moss couldnt solo a scout with fear kiting--Can back up the higher MR, fear just did NOT land, and if it did the duration was pitifully short

The highest these guys get (at least in IC) is 34. They have at least twice as much HP as normal mobs of the same level though, took four rounds of dots (340 and 240) to kill.
