SOE Giveth and SOE Taketh Away: EverQuest Edition

In the wake of EverQuest's big Free-to-Play announcement, SOE has also announced that EverQuest: Macintosh Edition will be permanently closing its doors on Thursday, March 29, 2012. Throughout the years, a small but resilient group of EverQuest: Macintosh players have existed on the server of Al'Kabor - a server specifically reserved for only such players - but with EQ's big transition, SOE has made the final decision to not bring Al'Kabor along for the ride.

EverQuest Community Manager Piestro has noted that the SOE team will hopping on to Al'Kabor to assist players with completing the final raids in the Planes of Power expansion, but after March 29, 2012, not much will remain post-closure. According to the official EverQuest: Macintosh Edition Closure Announcement FAQ, SOE does not plan to license or authorize the operation of an EverQuest: Macintosh Edition emulator or fan operated server. As well, the FAQ states that "all websites and forums associated with EverQuest: Macintosh Edition will be removed after the game shuts down." Finally, there will be a server closing celebration event near the end of March, but nothing else has been confirmed. Hopefully EverQuest: Macintosh Edition players will be able to find a new home once EverQuest makes its transition to Free-to-Play.

Definitely more than five of us there. We are on the brink of breaking into Plane of Time. It is like an EQ time-capsule there, unbelievably cool. PLEASE don't pull the plug on us! :(

John Smedley has responded and has asked the players of Al'Kabor to vote YES or NO in a poll to develop a Mac-based client.

Please show support in our fight to keep Al'Kabor viable by voting YES:

Welcome to the Test Server (PLAY). Finally downloaded the test server, for some reason I guess I deleted it but now my little "old ranger" who introduced me to EQ gets some play time again. Some minor buffs from you guys camped out in the GL would be nice once in a while.
Sad for Al Kabor Brethren.

This is very sad for the die hard (MacIntosh) EQ players on Al Kabor...No matter how many or few there are. Mainly because they cannot simply take a transfer to any pc type server....

Their world of EQ has suddenly ended. It is akin to a meteorite striking their world, the only difference being that it is not a result of an act of god. It is an act of a boardroom decision in SOE.

I could only imagine how abandoned many must feel as all those years of effort has been pulled out from under their feet.

I fully agree. This is a sad event and I wish they (SOE) could find a better alternative than to close down for all those on Al`Kabor.
I understand the monetary aspect they are looking at, but as making EQ free, I would think they would at least wait a few months and see if the population on that server goes up any. you never know how many will play when it goes free and they should at least wait a while and see, it might benefit them in the long run.
If this is truly the end of the World of Norrath, for those denizens of Al`Kabor, I /salute you and I /mourn your loss.

there are literally hundreds of active EQ Mac accounts.... my personal guess would be in the range of 350-550.

That our server has a great community and an actual challenging, enjoyable MMO in this day and age makes it a unique gem worth saving.... and trying out if you haven't so far!
