Rain of Fear Information & Guides: An Overview | Group Progression & Task List | Raid Progression | Visible Armor

This task is the first in a series of six. It's a solo task that you get from Overseer Drent in Shard's Landing.

Hail him to get the task. (dialogue needed)

You have been assigned the task 'Welcome to Shard's Landing'.

The locations listed below are for guidelines only. The actual ranges for updates are quite large.

See this map for locations pertaining to this task.

    Explore the Harbinger's Outpost 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

This is the large crater in the middle of the zone.

As you make your way down from the walls of the crater you notice the great crystalline structure that acted as the catalyst for all that you see here. The leaders of this camp can be found just southwest of the crystal.

Speak to Overseer Drent 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Overseer Drent (map) is found at 215, 100, 1 -- in a tent to the crystal's southwest (he also wanders to the fire).

    You say, 'Hail, Overseer Drent'

Overseer Drent nods toward you, 'Greetings traveler and welcome to the outpost of the Harbingers of Thule. Normally I would offer a grand speech to sell you on the pressing importance of joining our ranks immediately, but we are pressed for time and I'm quite certain you've been through this same routine enough times that you understand what needs to be done. For now, I need you to become acquainted with the geography of these hills. Oh, before you go trekking off into the wilderness, speak to Master Hunter Jilare over there. She may have some work for you in the future.'

Speak to Master Hunter Jilare 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Master Hunter Jilare (map is found at 245, 20, 1 (outside the same tent).

You say, 'Hail, Master Hunter Jilare'

Master Hunter Jilare chortles, 'What is this prissy _____ doing around here at this hour?' Her tone becomes higher pitched and mocking, 'Come to save the world again, smash the baddies and grab their treasures?' She waves her hand dismissively and returns to her normal voice, 'Go run Boxboy Drent's little errands and get back to me if you survive. Then maybe, just maybe I'll have some work for you.'

This opens up the next 11 steps.

    Explore Magus Burlshin's Camp 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

This updates around /location -1450, -1100, 0 (map -- southeastern valley, marked by a crystal druid ring).

Magus Burlshin's camp is situated very specifically on hallowed ground. Every active teleportation spire sits on land that resonates in this same manner. What is particularly interesting about this location is that both arcane and natural energy seems to converge here.

Explore the Valley of the Naeya 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

    This updates around /location -920, -1400, 5 (map -- southeastern valley).

The naeya here are generally not aggressive, save for the Alpha Naeya who is fiercely territorial. Although these creatures are unlikely to attack unless provoked, they are very social and will come to the aid of their kin at a moment's notice.

    Explore Banescale's Den 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

This updates around /location 800, -1250, 3 (map -- entrance of the eastern valley).

The snakes in this area appear to be of three varieties: the Slatescales which typically rest on the rocks scattered throughout the area, the Ivyscales which try to camouflage themselves by hiding under brush and foliage, and finally the aggressive Banescales that appear more frequently in this den and occasionally throughout the rest of the mountains.

Explore the Village of the Forsaken 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

    This updates around /location 420, -1880, 1 (map -- eastern valley).

The noxious stench of excrement and rotting flesh overpower any other details worth mentioning about this ramshackle 'village'. Overseer Drent begins speaking, 'The inhabitants here refer to themselves as 'The Forsaken'. All of our initial attempts at establishing diplomatic relations with the group have resulted in less than favorable results.' In fact, you think you spot the remains of one or two harbinger envoys as you survey the ground. Drent continues, 'The less hostile Alarans to the west refer to this group as 'The Unworthy', though they refuse to explain why...'

Explore Greenscale Nest 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

This updates around /location 650, 1180, 1 (map -- due west of the crater, a group of wyverns).

The wyverns in this area seem particularly interested in the crystalline shards that have landed near their nests. This interest has changed their behavior dramatically. They have become aggressively territorial and remain on guard at all hours now. Exercise caution when wandering near any wyverns in these hills.

    Explore Pyrebeak's Peak 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

This updates around /location -275, 705, 150 (map -- southwest of the crater, in the mountains).

The Icebeak kangons make their roost on these snowcapped hills. This species of kangon is typically not aggressive, but you should exercise caution should their grand matriarch Pyrebeak make an appearance...

    Explore Corruption's End 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

    This updates around /location -1200, 830, 10 (map -- southwestern valley).

Overseer Drent's voice becomes clear in your mind, 'At the heart of this valley is the water supply that sustains the packs of goral and panthers that have made these hills their home. It is believed that the water is the reason these creatures have recently shown signs of mutation. All beasts here are aggressive and territorial, so you should exercise caution when travelling here.'

    Explore Worntooth's Run 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

This updates around /location 2050, -350, 1 (map -- north of the crater, among the grendlaens).

The Worntooth grendlaen make their home in this very small plot of land just west of Cragfeast Rock. What is particularly interesting about these creatures is the immense weight of their hides. It is almost as if these living creatures were formed out of stone.

Explore Cragfeast Rock 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

    This updates around /location 1860, -1300, 10 (map -- northeastern valley).

Cragfeast Rock is the name given to this valley where a pack of Verdantbeak kangons live symbiotically with a group of selyrah. The herbivorous kangon seem to keep to themselves while the omnivorous selyrah seem to be attracted to the crystalline shards that have landed in the valley.

Explore the Infested Plain 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

    This updates around /location 2025, 890, -34 (map -- northwestern valley).

Although the Venomshell beetles can be found scattered throughout the hills, this small stretch of land appears to be their hotbed. Initial studies have suggested that the vegetation where the crystalline shards have landed seem to increase the potency of these beetles' venom.

    Explore Stonecoat's Plateau 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

This updates around /location 1500, 1600, 24 (map -- southwest of the above step, in the mountains).

Overseer Drent's voice speaks to you with a hint of hesitation, 'The Frostcoat braxi that inhabit this small hillside are something our soldiers speak of in hushed words. Rumor says that these beasts are somehow smart enough to speak, but choose not to. I'm not convinced, but I'm not about to go challenging them to prove a suspicion...'

Explore the Underground City 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

This updates around /location 450, 2100, -285 (map -- entrance of the Alaran city in the southern part of the zone's northwest valley).

Overseer Drent's voice speaks with renewed resolve, 'Unlike the disheveled Alarans to the east, the inhabitants of this underground city have been far more welcoming to the arrival of people in the hills. We are still in the early stages of forming official diplomatic relations with this group, but we feel they will likely serve as important allies in our efforts to reinstate our father the Faceless to the pantheon... I need you to get acquainted with their city and then return to the outpost.'

Explore the Council Chambers 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

    This updates around /location -600, 2200, -402 (map).

Overseer Drent continues, 'The appointed councilors meet in these halls twice daily, once midday between eleven of morning and four in the afternoon and again in the evening between eight and eleven of evening. Members of the council are signified by the heatless red flame of guidance that shines brightly from their left hand. Their meetings are conducted in absolute silence so we are still unsure what it is that they accomplish or discuss here.'

Explore the Silent Hall 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

This updates around /location -400, 670, -750 (map -- the large hall in the far eastern part of the underground city).

Overseer Drent's voice is quiet but clear in your mind, 'It is of absolute import that you do not speak to anyone in these halls. A non-clergyman making sound here is considered the greatest sacrilege to these people. It is interesting to think that the citizens and priests alike have chosen to call themselves 'The Believers'. From what we have gathered, the upper echelon of this society is marked by the pale ethereal orbs of power around their hands. We are still unsure what the dark flame that marks the others means. Take a moment to survey these halls, as something still does not seem quite right... If you find anything out of the ordinary, be discreet and return here as soon as possible.'

Look for anything out of place 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

"Small Crystalline Shard" is a ground spawn (map) that has a few spawn points in the silent hall. It appears as a small purple shard.

    30, 780, -747 (northwest corner)
    -120, 550, -747 (northeast area)
    -310, 790, -747 (southwest area)

As you survey the crystal shard you come to the realization that nowhere else in the city have you seen any sign that the Alarans have been collecting the crystals that litter the lands above this city... Perhaps Drent would be interested in this.

Return the crystal to Overseer Drent 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Overseer Drent takes the crystal and inspects it carefully before placing it aside, 'So you say you found this in their worship halls?' The Iksar furrows his brow, 'Troubling news, none of our other scouts have reported finding any crystals within the City of The Believers. We were under the impression that they were indifferent to our efforts...' The Overseer changes to a less grave expression, 'Still, you've done well, _____. I would like to extend the open invitation of the Harbingers to you. There is still much to be done here if we are to reinstate our father to the pantheon but I am sure with the help of adventurers like you we will restore Norrath to its previous balance! I suggest you speak with Councilman Nostulia or Hunter Jilare for your next assignments, though I could always use more scouts to relay more detailed information about the area.'

Your faction standing with Harbingers of Thule got better.

Now that you are familiar with the general layout of Shard's Landing you can be of use to the Harbingers. Speak to Councilman Nostulia for your next training assignment, Master Hunter Jilare if you are interested in proving your worth as a hunter or Overseer Drent if you would like to gather more information about the various geographical points of interest.

This quest is not automatically given when you zone into Shard's Landing. You will get the welcome message but then you have to go hail Overseer Drent and HE gives you the quest.

Quest reward is Experience (Approximately 2% of the experience required to go from level 100 to level 101) and 3 AA.

For a level 90 character, the experience gain amounted to 5.25%.

For those who haven't noticed -

Map /loc and ingame /loc are arranged differently-
If someone says "/loc XXXX" it usually means ingame /loc
If someone says "Post these to your map file" the X and y axis are transposed.

the locations of the original post are correct if copy/pasted to your map file but reversed if you read them as ingame /locs
    Something out of place

None of the trash sees thru invis. You can do this in any order so since the purpose is to get you to explore the whole zone, you can just run around it and pick up most of them without having to concentrate at all. Just be sure if you miss update one if a quadrant that you pick it up before leaving that area.

Paste this into your shards landing map file for easier travelling. This info comes from the locs listed above. I haven't tested this with an alt yet, so if any of them were typed wrong, let me know and I will edit.

I am 95+ and did not get this quest by entering the zone. I had to speak to Magus Burlshin near a tent near the zone in from CoB. He will give you the quest after some chatting. I did have ally faction with him when I spoke to him. Not sure if this makes a difference.
