This task is the second in a series of six. It's a solo task that begins with Councilman Nostulia (map) in Shard's Landing. He is found at /location 300, 85, 1 (southwestern part of the crater, in a tent north of Overseer Drent's location).

In addition to being a progression task, this will also boost your Alaran language skill level to 100 (if it's not there already).

Pre-Requisites:
- Level 85
- Completed "Welcome to Shard's Landing"

You say, 'Hail, Councilman Nostulia'

Councilman Nostulia looks up, 'Oh yes, _____? Drent was just speaking about a rambunctious _____ that had shown some promise. I shall skip the pleasantries and get to the point, my job here is simple, I ensure that all of our recruits are ready and able to report on any and everything they see. To that end I need to know that you are fluent in their language. If you are willing to [prove] yourself ready to join our ranks then I have a simple task for you to complete.'

You say, 'I'll prove myself'

Councilman Nostulia says 'Very well, this should be an easy enough job.'

You have been assigned the task 'Words of the Unspoken'.

Councilman Nostulia has tasked you with mastering the Alaran language.

Your first order of business is to travel back to the Underground City. From there you will want to seek out some different pieces of text and then report back to him.

Travel back to the Underground City 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

This updates as you enter the city (connected from the zone's northwestern valley).

Obtain a Councilor's Memo 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: Just east of the council chambers is where many of the councilmen and citizens live. See if you can find a memo or diary from one of them.

"A Councilor's Memo" is a ground spawn on a table in this area (/location -715, 1710, -500 -- bottom level, second residence to your left if coming from the chambers).

Obtain a Page of a Citizen's Diary 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: North of the council chambers is another living barracks, see if you can find any personal writings from one of the citizens.

"Page of a Citizen's Diary" is a ground spawn on a table in this area (/location -280, 2350, -295 -- upper level, first residence to your left if coming from the chambers).

Obtain a Page of a High Guard's Diary 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: In the barracks north of the council chambers on the northern side are four rooms that the High Guards inhabit. See if you can find any writings of theirs there.

"Page of a High Guard's Diary" is a ground spawn on a table in this area (/location 5, 2250, -292 -- upper level of the residence to your right if coming from the chambers).

Obtain a page of Council Minutes 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: In the barracks east of the council chambers are the houses of many councilmen. See if you can find any official documentation about their meetings.

"Council Minutes" is a ground spawn on a table in this area (/location -925, 1765, -465 -- upper level, first residence to your right if coming from the chambers).

Obtain A Gardener's Notes 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: To the south of the council chambers is the indoor garden of believers. This area produces nearly all the food to sustain the city and may have some detailed documentation that would be worth examining.

"A Gardener's Notes" is a ground spawn in this area (/location -1200, 2120, -602 -- just to your right upon entering the area, if coming from the chambers).

Obtain an Armsman's Missive 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: In the northeastern section of the Underground City is the armory. See if you can find any text of interest in that area.

"An Armsman's Missive" is a ground spawn on a table at /location 165, 975, -500 (on your map, this is the large room northwest of the Silent Hall).

Obtain a Sentry's Log 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: Just east of the city's entrance is a barracks where a number of miners are housed. They are under constant supervision from the enforcers and taskmasters in the city. See if you can find anything of interest in that area.

"A Sentry's Log" is a ground spawn on a table in the open area east of the city's entrance (/location 230, 1375, -442 -- central part of this area).

Obtain a Page of a Gladiator's Journal 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: Our understanding of the society is that there are several distinct castes, the lowest being 'the conscripted'. Many of them are housed as gladiators that perform for the entertainment of the citizens. See if you can find any writings by these warriors in their barracks southeast of the city gates.

"Page of a Gladiator's Journal" is a ground spawn on a table in the open area just northeast of the arena (/location -50, 1350, -502 -- in the north-central part of this area).

Obtain a Believer's Private Notes 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: The devout worshippers are a curious group. We understand very little about their form of worship. See if you can find anything of use in the silent hall.

"A Believer's Private Notes" is a ground spawn in front of a bench at about -190, 750, -747 in the Silent Hall (northeastern part of the city -- in the west-central part of the Hall).

Obtain a Nondescript Clergy Memo 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: Reports have stated that a number of clergy stand watch in the arena. See if you can find any texts of note by this group.

"A Nondescript Clergy Memo" is a ground spawn at /location -585, 1770, -482 (in the arena which is the large area just northeast of the council chambers -- ground spawn along the south-central wall of the arena).

Report back to Councilman Nostulia 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: Now that you have collected a wide variety of texts, report back to Councilman Nostulia and he will give you further instructions.

You say, 'Hail, Councilman Nostulia'

Councilman Nostulia says 'Ah, so you've collected the texts?' He takes a moment to look over the pieces of paper you present him, 'Very well, this will be a rather simple lesson, which I assume you find to be the best kind of lesson.' He smirks, 'Take this tome and piece together the papers into a master document, copy them -exactly- as written. After you've done that, translate the paper into common and return the perfectly translated work to me. I will not accept anything less than a perfect translation!' The wizened erudite hands you a tome full of blank pages and a quill.'

You receive a container: "Simple Empty Tome"

Copy the notes exactly as written 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Combine the 10 texts inside the container to produce a "Tome of Blank Pages" (container) + "Nostulia's Quill" + "Hand Copied Alaran Notes".

You slowly copy the elaborate symbols that make up the Alaran language onto a series of blank pages until a perfect replica is made.

You have fashioned the items together to create something new: Hand Copied Alaran Notes.
You have fashioned the items together to create something new: Nostulia's Quill.
You have fashioned the items together to create something new: Tome of Blank Pages.

Translate the notes into Common 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

In the Tome, combine the Quill and Copied Notes until the step updates and you produce "Translated Notes" (as you do this, your Alaran will progress to 100).

You review your work to find a number of glaring errors.
You review your work to find a handful of minor errors.
You review your work and find one or two simple mistakes.
You review your work and realize you've misspelled something.

After several minutes of careful translation you review your work and find it immaculate! You have a clear understanding of the Alaran language.

You have fashioned the items together to create something new: Translated Notes.

Deliver the Translated Notes to Councilman Nostulia 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: Deliver the Translated Notes to Councilman Nostulia so he can assess your success.

Councilman Nostulia looks over the paper carefully then looks back up at you, 'Well, you've proven to be quicker learner than I had anticipated. I suppose some minor congratulations are in order. You are now fully qualified to speak to the natives. I have another simple task for you should you be up for it, though I think Engineer Eilisia may also be interested in your talents.'

Your faction standing with Harbingers of Thule got better.

Although his methods felt somewhat patronizing, you feel inspired by the haste in which Councilman Nostulia was able to help you master the Alaran language. Whether or not you have any real use for their native tongue is another matter though...

Only takes about a minute for the items to respawn so if your doing it with boxes, it's probably worth it to take each character to the spawn points at the same time.

1. you won't need your merc for any of this, and if you haven't killed anything in the zone you can run around invis without incident

3. the non descript clergy memo is found inside the arena on the top row of the grand stand (in the arena which is the large area just northeast of the council chambers -- ground spawn along the south-central wall of the arena)
4. notice in the quarters of rooms when you first enter the zones there ARE second floors to the sleeping quarters, the ramps are located on the sides of the stacked bedrooms, just look up top for the spawns on the tables
5. before you start any of this, bind at the quest giver if you can otherwise you'll just keep running back and forth
6. After you hail the quest giver and he provides yet another container and a quill. Take the completed book of your combines [looks like a page of sanscript] and the quill and combine it in the new container. Keep combining and watch your skill go up to 100. Then turn the final book in and you're done.

Easy task. Just be aware two of the "ground" spawns are on a higher level. Use the nearby ramp to get up there.

When you do the final combines, the Alaran language advances by steps of 5 until 80. Then it advances by onesies until 100. Talk about making it painless to max out Alaran, especially considering how much work it was as recently as a week ago!

Fantastic Quest, if you load the Places into your eq map file youll need to close down EQ all together.

or you can have already created a custom folder for maps. then whenever you make an alteration to your map file you just pull up maps in game toggle the drop down to basic, then back to custom and viola there are your new updated maps. or you can just simply zone. maps will update without closing eq.
