This solo task begins with Arcanist Variszh in the portal tower in the southeastern section of Katta Castrum (entrance around -2050, -2100). If Variszh doesn't respond to your hails may open the task simply by saying 'library'.

    You say, 'Hail, Arcanist Variszh'

Arcanist Variszh says 'Indeed. I am Variszh. You must know lives for all have become quite complicated. Those of us still loyal to Emperor Zhisza would like nothing more than peace, just as the Combine do. Unfortunately, that isn't going to happen so long as Saarisz and her minions have the upper hand. I must get my hands on those [tomes]!'

    You say, 'What tomes?'

Arcanist Variszh says 'The Combine [library] is incredible, and there is some important information in there that can be found nowhere else in the world. There are a few tomes in particular that I believe I could use to garner more support for peace between the Shissar and Combine, but it is not possible for me to get near the library, much less get my hands on the books.'

    You say, 'The library?'

Arcanist Variszh says 'If I could [collect] those tomes and share them amongst those of us who want peace, it would help sway more out from under Saarisz's control. I do not believe this to be an impossible dream. If people could see why the Combine moved the city here and how our Zhisza helped them . . . he even gave them all the knowledge they needed to escape to the Luclin moon! Peace would be the only natural outcome if I meet success with this quest.'

You have been assigned the task 'Library Heist'.

Since the start of the war between the Shissar and the Combine, the Shissar have been without the resources of the Combine's great library. There are several tomes which would be invaluable to the Shissar's efforts. Beware! Removal of books from the library by outsiders is not allowed. You will need to be careful to avoid the guards lest you lose all entrance privleges.

Explore the Combine library (Katta Castrum)

    Collect 1 Saving Tsaph Katta(s)

    Location about -1066 +421 +6 (NE corner 1st floor)

    Collect 1 Sphinx Habitation(s)

    Location about -1261 +878 +6 (SW corner 1st floor)

    Collect 1 Kedge Habitation(s)

    Location about +1067 +878 +38 (NW corner 2nd floor)

    Collect 1 Prexus' Wrath(s)

    Location about -1266 +422 +38 (SE corner 2nd floor)

Deliver 1 Saving Tsaph to Arcanist Variszh

Deliver 1 Sphinx Habitation to Arcanist Variszh

Deliver 1 Kedge Habitation to Arcanist Variszh

Deliver 1 Prexus' Wrath to Arcanist Variszh

Once you pick up the first book, the guards will banish you from the library if they catch you. You will lose the looted books from your inventory so it is safest to start from upstairs and go hand in one book at the time because you will get banished several times.

I tried this with my cleric (80 kindly) and my berserker (70 apprehensively) and neither could get task. It did not respond when i said library, but when I said collect he gave the text and no task for the berserker. For my cleric upon hailing him he responded "thanks to your help, we are one step closer to making peace between the Combine and the Shissar."
I am guessing that the task is disabled.

    bind in katta
    get mission
    get 1st book
use any form of location gate(example bone field), used origin
    place in bank
get teleport to bind from wizzy or use gate potion, wizzy sent me
    get 2nd book
use any form of location gate, used crescent reach clicky
    place in bank
get teleport to bind or use gate potion, wizzy sent me
    get 3rd book
    use any ...
    place in bank
    get teleport ...
    get 4th book
    use any ...
    grab all books
    get teleport ...
turn in books to quest npc, YOU WIN!
pick the urn as reward for the quest you might complete this year sometime

you can also bind at the katta bank to make this easier if you want to just use a gate potion, I used the cheap method since my wizzy was there to tp to bind

katta bank is downstairs in the central pyramid, find banker works when you get close

Has anyone tried asking a mage friend to Try to Call of The Hero them around? Have mage move 2nd book, you loot first, CoTH to 2nd, mage moves to 3rd, loot 2nd, CoTH to 3rd, etc?

If CoTH doesn't work, just go back to the strats listed here.

If it does and Mage watches out for Guards, .... =)
    Library Heist Loses Merchant Faction

I have been running missions and tasks in TBS and was at Amiable with over 1K in Oruex. I ran the Library Heist Friday and it knocked me back to Indifferent!! I have posted a Bug report and petitioned. I have not recieved a reply as yet. BEWARE if you run this you will lose faction. By my guess, I lost at least 6 missions in faction.

As of the Mar. 14th patch (in the notes), this task is no longer repeatable. Sounds like a slap in the face to factioners everywhere.

Bind at a banker. When you loot the books, port ot gate out and then put them in the bank. If the guards catch you they cannot confiscate them.
    A strategy to this mission
    # Feb 27 2007 at 6:15 AM Rating: Decent
After watching the guards a bit, I've come up with this strategy. It's not full proof, as the guards do act randomly (from my observation).

First, for new people, the library is up on supports. The entrance is the pyramid you see in the courtyard (approx -1000, 600) underneath the library.

As noted, you are not of any interest to the librarii guards until you pick up your 1st book. Move around the library and find all 4 books before you start.

As you move around notice that the library is divided into 3 sections, on two floors. The first section is the open, circular area that you arrive in. It is also the stairway up to the second floor. From the zone in, move north thru the doorway until you are near the pillars on the north wall. Look east and west. Note the corner made from the north wall and the book shelf. There is a corner in all 4 directions, ne, nw, se, sw. The corners are safe. You will wait here while the guards move out of position so you can move in.

The other 2 sections are the east and west bookshelf wings.

This next section may change with the randomness of the guard movements/server reboot. You will have to make your own judgements based on initial recon before you start.

I start at the zone in and look for the guard that patrols the stairs up to the 2nd floor. New people may have to wait for him, as you get used to this, you will find him out on patrol. Target him. Now move to the south east corner. From the corner you can watch the movements of the guards. The east wing of the first floor has only one guard patrolling, plus the wandering guard that patrols the stairs up. Watching and judging is important. When you see that both guards have left the shelf area (moving into the central section), head down the south aisle, head north and pick up 1st book. Head back the way you came. Move along the wall from east to the south west corner. The west section has 2 patrolling guards, that will eventually patrol out of the shelfs into the central section. When you are more experienced, you can time it when one guard is in the central area and one is just moving back into the shelves via the north aisle. Head down the south aisle, turn south and pick up your 2nd book. Leave the way you came in. Move back along the wall to the south east corner. Wait for the way north to clear, then move to the north east corner. Because you have the wanderer targeted, it is 'easier' to know where he is at. Carefully make your way to the zone in/stairs up, and head up the stairs to the second floor.

Careful near the top of the ramp! Stop before you get there and look around for patrolling guards. By preference, I head to the ne corner. Both the east and west sections have 2 guards, and they do not always leave the shelf area at the same time. Here you will have to learn their pattern and judge when it is safe. When I was watching the east wing, I noticed that the back was rarely visited, and by only one guard. I target this guard. The book in the se corner was visited regularly, but the ne corner was only rarely visited. So, when the north aisle was clear, I headed down and grabbed the book, then headed to the ne corner and peeked out. Since only one guard comes back that far, and its targeted, I would watch the shelf patrol until the north aisle was clear. When clear, I headed to the nw corner of the central section. This last book is the hardest to get. Only when both guards were visible in the south aisle would I run the north aisle to get the book.

Because of the random guard movements, I can't guarantee success. But I was averaging close to 10 minutes to get the quest, run to the library, get the books and run back. I could then get the quest again right away (no wait period) and start again. Of course, I did get occassionally get tagged, but once I started this system it went much smoother.

I could pick out certain guards by the weapon they carried. I don't know if it is static on reboot, but a quick recon will show you the patrolling guard on the stairs and the east section guard on the second floor who moves into the back row.

The guards from one section never patrol the other section. They do, however, move into the central section, which is great when you want to run their shelves, but watch behind you when you are looking at one section and the other section guards come wandering over near your corner.

After doing a group mission I had just hit Kindly, I then did this 4 times and went back to Amiable. The faction message is wrong it gives negative Combine Empire Merchant faction.

    Confirmation:

    Greetings Sikkem from GM Raubic.

Thank you for contacting Sony Online Entertainment Customer service. I understand that the quest 'Library Heist' gives negative faction. I know your frustration as you lost the faction.

I was not able to contact you in game as you were offline. I investigated the issue and received the faction standing with 'Combine Empire Merchants'. There are quests in game which gives negative and positive faction. I suggest that you to ask suggestions from fellow players to get more information regarding this issue. You may also visit the EQ forums at http://eqplayers.station.sony.com/. If you have any further questions or concerns, please write back and we will do our best to assist you further.

May the light guide your path

    Faction Message is wrong
    # Feb 23 2007 at 3:04 AM Rating: Decent
This is giving exact 5 positive faction 'points'. I failed (got kicked out of the library) several times and did not receive any negative faction.

Here is the proof. I did 3 missions prior to this which were worth 25pts each.
Then I did this mission 5 times.

Library Heist + 3 Missions = 100 faction hits. I went from starting Apprehensive(-100 faction) to indifferent(0 faction) upon the 5th turn in.

Well I have been assured by 2 Devs this quest is giving the correct positive faction on completion.

They are at a losss to explain how I went from Kindly to amiable though. Merloc thinks maybe failing it is giving a negative faction hit that isnt being reported.

The faction was positive pre 2/21 patch. Not sure if it got changed, but I got to ally faction with Combine Merchants, so it was definitely positive...

Shrink up and you can squeeze your self into the book shelfs and peep through and see if any mobs are visable and where they are going.

Dont get too close behind them I think I got found that way once.

No deaths, no killing, a very fun idea that has great mert. I see one other same type of different in EQ the Hide and Seek Group mission. maybe this is the Solo version of that.

This quest is repeatable which makes it a great path for faction raising while /lfg for missions. There is a wait time of 5-10 mins between your finish and when the quest giver will answer you hails. Also, I suspect that the amount of experience you get from the quest goes done each time you repeat it, just like the repeatable solo quests in the outer sea.

    EDIT:
There is a faction isssue regarding this quest. It says it raises your faction and some people say they have raised faction with it, others say their faction has gone down from it and that a GM responsing to a petition stated that the message of raising faction is an error.

There is thread on this at EQlive awaiting Dev response, I am holding off repeating this quest until a response from the devs.
