This group monster mission begins with a weary traveler, who can be found at +2710, -100 (outside the entrance to Nagafen's Lair in the Lavastorm Mountains).

You say, 'Hail, a weary traveler'

a weary traveler says 'Hail, ______. It's nice to see young adventurers like yourself exploring the Lavastorm Mountains. It's definitely not like it used to be. As the seasons pass, less people travel through here and some don't even know about the [fierce battles] that took place around here in the past.'

You say, 'What fierce battles?'

a weary traveler says 'I've seen many of them my friend. One of the most memorable battles I can recall was against a fierce red dragon. We fought down to his lair and prepared for the charge. It was a valiant fight against the great Lord Nagafen. I can only [imagine] what it must have been like from his point of view.'

You have been assigned the task 'Defending the Lair'.

You have the following monster templates to choose from:
Lord Nagafen (mandatory, 1 player, 55th level warrior)
King Tranix (warrior, 1 player)
Magus Rokyl (wizard, 1 player)
Warlord Skarlon (shadowknight, 1 player)
Priest of Nagafen (cleric, as many as 3 players)

You say, 'Imagine!'

Your task 'Defending the Lair' has been updated.

LOADING, PLEASE WAIT...
You have entered Nagafen's Lair: Defending the Lair.

The great Lord Nagafen resides in his lair, keeping safe his treasures and minions. There is rumor that a guild of ruthless and greedy individuals seek to put an end to him. They must be stopped at all costs!

Relive the famous battle 0/1 (ALL)

This step updates when you zone into the mission.

Defend your lair against the invaders! Don't let Nagafen die! 0/96 (Nagafen's Lair)

The goal is to fight off several waves of "raider" NPCs, killing 96 of them while keeping the person playing Lord Nagafen alive at all costs. If Nagafen dies, you fail the mission.

Raider NPC levels range from light blue to dark blue at 55th level, and come in 6 waves of 16 NPCs each. They can melee for around 300.

It is recommended that clerics, enchanters, and bards die first, as their heals and charms (respectively) can cause significant problems.

Once you have won, you have about a minute to split the loot before you are teleported out of the instance.

This is pretty easy and straight forward, I don't see why people feel the need to post strats on what to kill in what order or what to position where or that you need any more than 3 (doable with 2, just actually need to try).
Just start off with naggy AEing, keep agro on naggy (AE takes care of that), use fear while healing (which heals for more HP than naggy has), and spam F8 and put on auto attack, use thunder on priests to finish off nearly dead clerics or whatever. Never even get near failing 3 boxing it.
Only rounds that are a pain are the ones with clerics, the last wave is all casters and naggy can solo it all.

Any reports in about this being broken? Since TBS release I can't get in. You can get the quest ok. But when you say 'imagine' is says in red:

The way is blocked. Perhaps if you had some reason to enter.

I have boxed this with 3 many times (its easy 3-box exp).

Naggy sets up on top of the chest, A cleric on either side, just at the sides of the portal.

On the start of each wave do a fire breath followed by a fear, then stat hitting on one of the chars that resisted fear. Hold next fire breath til the returned from fear. This gives good initial agro.

The clerics then alternate healing Naggy. When they catch agro, naggy taunts off them (this is why the stand on the sides of the gate, so you can taunt off without having to move). Dont ever heal cleric except when wave is almost dead, or between waves, it is easier to taunt off cleric when they dont have agro from healing themsemves or each other. if you have to, juts let a cleric die, the resawn close enough and fast enough that its not a problem. I dont noramlly fear during the fight, except as a backup, when i feel landing the PH wil be close, or when too many are on clerics, since they go down faster if the stay in AE range.

I do not pay much attention to who to kill. On waves with healers the can heal anyway, so its more important to pick a soft target to drain mana faster. You end up having to switch anyway to get a few mobs off the clerics.

You are not ported out before you loot the item from chest. Its a bad idea to le the chest rot, since you might get stuck.

Keys to win:
- Set up clerics so Naggy can easily taunt off them.
- Do Fire - Fear - Fire on return of feared to lock initial agro.
- Dont heal cleric except in downtime.
Is this Bugged?

Did this today, we won but didn't teleport and got no exp. Is this a known problem or did we goof it up somehow?

it is NOT possible to solo. Ths is, apparently, acomplete typo. Mn players should be 3, Max 6. I still recommend closer to a full group. Only 3 would be really tight, if its even doable.

Just did this MM 3 times today. 1 time with Naggy and 2 Clerics, twice with Naggy, 2 Clerics, and 1 Magus. It's rather easy if you use good strategy.

1) Naggy should be on the bridge backed up against the lair entrance (I.E. - facing the mobs). This way he cannot be stunned or knocked back and he keeps the mobs away (for the most part) from the other toons.

2) Clerics and Magus (if you have one) should be on the left side behind Naggy, all the way against the wall. This keeps them (again, for the most part) out of aggro range.

3) Clerics should PH (Perfect Heal) Naggy at about 35-40% health. This allows Naggy to keep blood aggro. They should also be aware of any mobs that do get past Naggy and to heal the other cleric if necessary.

4) Magus should ONLY nuke mobs that get past Naggy. This keeps him from getting aggro.

5) If you've never done this before, you need to get your AAs set up and saved as fast as possible.

Done this way, we succeeded 3 out of 3 times. Exp was 65% of an AA at level 66. We got 1 earring and 2 gloves and are planning on going back for more.

ponunihep listed some good general strategies and info. Especially about the various waves, just a couple things to add.

On the caster waves. It's vital to kill the enchanters AND the bards AND the mages as all three of those classes can, and will, charm.

The reward isn't based on the difficulty of the waves, but is completely random. About 80% chance of getting the gloves, 20% of getting the ear. I've gone through missions where virtually all the waves conned red to the healers and still got the gloves, as well as missions where there were no reds at all and gotten the earring.

I regularly do this with just three characters (Nagafen and two priests). It's very simple, just have the clerics assist Nagafen and cast the Ice DoT, then both try to blast when the target gets around 20% to hopefully avoid a heal. Usually you'll just have to wait for the healers to run out of mana though, which doesn't take that long.

They've also changed it, when any giant dies, you respawn in the room with Nagafen with about 40% hp and mana. I've had times where a priest got aggro from a heal, died and was respawned before Nagafen even needed another heal. So even if you just use 2 priests to alternate heals and then die... you'll be fine unless you get charmed.

Been reading a lot of (non)sense about this task Its time to dot the i's =).

SETUP KEYS:
Cycle Through NPC is an absolute must for this mission!!!. Assign a key under: Options - Keys - Target - Cycle Through NPC.

START MISSION: Lavasorm Mountains, between the two caves to DoN camps you will find "a weary traveller". Hail him and say "fierce battles" (not imagine hihi). Then you can select the monsters. After that all members hail traveler again and say "imagine". After zone in you have 3 mins to set up your toon.

Select Innate Resist Poison (tash), IR Deasease (Root) and IR Magic (charm), then select all points except the remaining IR's.

MISSIONINFO: 6 waves of 16 mobs attack Nagafen. First wave is MELEE wave: kill (in that order) clerics - druids - shamans - paladin - trash.
Second wave is CASTER wave: kill ASAP, PRONTO, SCHNELL, VITE the TWO enchanters in that wave. The start off a little to the right of the RF, all the way back on the bridge. They charm proficiently and when they charm mission failure becomes a valid option =p.
This is one set of waves (melee and caster), In total there are three.
The difficulty of the waves is calculated by the start of the mission and will determine the reward (gloves or earring; later more about rewards). First and third Melee wave are usually hard, the fourth Caster wave is usually hard. This may vary though: like I said before it is calculated randomly, although I suspect thoughness is within certain extremes: it will remain challenged at all times =)

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT:
Naggy: MT / MA
Cleric #1: Heal Naggy
Cleric #2: Heal Cleric #1
Cleric #3: Backuphealer in case one of the clerics die / mezzed / charmed
Magus: DPS
Warrior: DPS
SK: DPS

POSITIONING MOBS:
Naggy: Over chest so you keep mobs on the bridge (makes your job much easier)
Cleric #1: LEFT of Naggy, hug the wall to avoid chanter misery.
Cleric #2: LEFT of Naggy with a visual on Cleric #1.
Cleric #3: LEFT of Naggy with a clear sight on the bridge.
Mage / Warr / SK: after first DR on the bridge dancing on the mobs =p

MISSION OBJECTIVE:
The key to do this task is for Nagafen to keep aggro. For this Naggy has 4 tools: Taunt, DragonRoar (AE Fear recast 30 secs) - LavaBreath (AE DD recast 10 secs)- Enraging Bellow (AE Enrage recast 15 mins).

This is what I do (do this threeboxing now btw). I play and succeed this misson with three clerics. Wave starts, I click LB - ATK - Kick and keep on doing that (when tar changes auto atk does not always work). When Naggy hits 35 - 50% (depending on how hard the wave is) Cleric ANNOUNCES and casts PH (will heal ALL HP btw, not just the 25K mentioned in other posts here). Naggy will hit DragonRoar (DR) after 5 secs of announcement. Most of te RF will be feared away, in the meanwhile PH lands and clerics hardly get any aggro. When RF returns cast LB (keep it up for the RF to return) and you will get remaining aggro. There will be 1 or 2 mobs that will aggro the cleric. Simply taunt them individually to get aggro back.
Cast LB - Kick again and go on. Naggy hits 35 - 50% --> PH --> after 5 secs DR --> get individual aggro of cleric mobs --> LB when RF returns.
I got the routine of this after 5 missions or so.
Btw: Naggy goes on enrage under 30% HP.I use that after half the RF is gone. HP doesnt drop that fast by then, so I let Naggy drop well below 30% so cleaning up goes faster. I hardly use Paintolerance (didnt have to use it yet). Enraging Below I use seldom; I only use it when DR is down and Clerics have a lot of aggro. I consider EB to be a savety measure, although I would appreciate some info on that. I am a caster, not a melee hihi.
Should you die, you will repop in the safe room (Kings room). Take the right most exit and follow the path back to the lair. It is a short distance only your bulky features have to be pushed through tight corridors, hindering movement considerably. I.o.w. its a long and tedious crawl hihi.

MISSION DEPENDICIES: (in order of importance)
Naggy keeps aggro at all times.
Destroy the two enchanters in wave # 2, 4 and 6.
Set Assist button to Nagafen (this is forgotten all to often btw).
Is this right

The way I read this quest, I could find this "weary traveler: running around Lavastorm, me and a group of level 7 characters hail him, and we are all teleported somewhere, become someone else with crazy high level abilities and if successful I get equipment with no level restriction that I couldn't get until Level 60. Is this right? If so, why isn't every toon tracking this traveller down. That earring would like real good on my level 7 wizard!!!
RE: Is this right
# Oct 10 2005 at 1:57 PM Rating: Default
This is right. Here's the scoop. The Traveler is standing right outside the evil Bloodfield cave and you have to get 6 people together, whatever level, and hail him and say Imagine. You all are prompted to choose a Character role in the mission. It's best not to use the SK, choose the Cleric, Wiz, Naggy, and the warrior classes.

You all enter the mission and are in Naggy's Lair. Hit "V" on your keyboard to use your given AA pts and choose your spells. Do this quickly as you have about 5 minutes before the raid comes running in. There are 6 waves of 16 NPCs that come running in to kill Naggy. Keep Naggy alive and kill all Clerics and Chanters first. The rest die quickly afterwards. The Clerics have about 10K in HPs and most of the raid party can melee up to 300. The raid is evenly stacked with Shamans, Chanters, Clerics, Tanks, BstLords, you name it. It's like defending against a real raid. The first 3 waves are not bad but they do progressively get tougher. Make sure Naggy Player gets aggro, keep the heals coming, and assist on the clerics then the Chanters. There are usually up to 3 clerics. The rewards are rare to common being like you do 10 of these and get 10 common drops. There is 1 drop for each mission and the mission will take like 90 minutes on the avg to do.

If you right click on the item to see the details, it does say this item may be progressively lower in stats depending on your level. -or something like that. So in other words, it's exactly like having a recommended level to use where the stats are less as you are lower in levels.

Happy Hunting, its nice gear and fun to win.

Did this yesterday, its a blast but heres just a little info i picked up:

The person playing Naggy has about 33.4K hp we figured out. One of his abilities is the AE fear that everyone fighting naggy just loves to deal with, they also have a 500 point AE nuke. That nuke will compensate for A LOT of dps over the course of the mission.

King: a little over 16k hp, and a little over 2k mana. The king is a shadow knight, so he gets some spells that can be helpful towards his dps. Tactics for the king are assisting Naggy (as naggy will be mt) BUT king also gets an ability called Enraging Bellow and if the preists get agro then the king must be the one to grab it from them due to his agro ability until naggy can get it back.

Magus: a little over 8k hp, a little under 2k. Magus was probably the worse of the characters i played, but, if you dump all of his ability points into 1) mana regen, 2) mana preservation, 3) Intelligence and other such things, then he can become actually pretty helpful for fighting the waves with the clerics by waiting until the clerics are at like 30% then just blowing them up with a combination of his fastest nukes.

Warlord: never got to play warlord, sorry dont have any info on him.

Priest: Hp >10K, Mana >6k. The Priests get a spell called "Perfect Heal" i beleive it is, and it heals for like 25k meaning you do not need to cast it on naggy until he is at like 25-30%. Problem with this is it is a long cast (same as CH i beleive) and has a short range which means NAGGY CANT MOVE OR RUN. That wiped my group one of the times.

Just some vary basic strategy stuff, Hope you all have some fun with this, like, as much fun as i did!
Nerf Bat
# Sep 22 2005 at 6:52 AM Rating: Default
Sony just took the nerf bat to the monster missions and reduced exp by 50% on 9/21. (At least at levels 69 and 70 and doing this mission.) I liked this mission a lot originally and I also liked being able to group with other characters of any level. However I am now MUCH less likely to be doing these missions any more. The mission used to give a about 1.2 AA's in 45 minutes if the mission is done pretty well. You lose, you get nothing. That is less than I got on the top level DoN missions everyone cranks out. It also is way less than some friends crank out soloing their casters. The loot is non existent (I got the earring, which is nice, but now what incentive do I have to repeat?), the exp is lame, I'm going to very rarely do monster missions at this point on my main.

DoD's are still pretty nice, especially for the player who only has an hour or so to play here and there. I can log in my Wizard, head to Nek and join and orc/fairy group and get about 3 AA points in an hour. This with very little time LFG (usually less than 5 mins)and NO risk (outside of time lost if you fail).

Naggy is a lot of fun, if you get a group that knows what its doing.

btw, most missions gave me about 1.5 aa, pre-nerf, about 1 aa post nerf.

this is such a fun mission, but it sounds like you guys are actually having a hard time with it. My three roomates and i use naggy, warlord, and two priests and this is a piece of cake....

I usually am the healer for naggy and a CH only takes about 2% of your mana. There really is never a problem with this. Just have naggy AE fear and DD and warlord to help pull adds off the healers and i cast CH on naggy once every 30 secs or so...some waves not at all till its over. The 1st and 4th waves are the hardest though.

Also, my roomates are level 68, 70, 58, and me at 56...My two high level roomates get alot of exp, but me and the 58 dont really get much. I got about 30% of an AA thats it for completion. Anyone know whats up with that. My other roomate dinged 125% in one completion
I just want that earring, we keep getting the damn gloves!

i have 4 boxed this event over 10 times now, what you need to do, is have whoever is naggy sitting down close to the entrance to the lair, the sitting will draw extra aggro, keeping priests alive, stand b4 the first raider hits you so you dont take full damage, have the priests concentrating on naggy and each other, if warlord or king goes down it doesnt really matter, but if a priest or naggy goes down its bad, naggy should be spamming lavabreath, and fear as well, but dont use fear and then lava breath directly after or the raiders will stop running and come back to attack, very bad if your trying to pull off last second heals. As soon as you get into the mission, make sure to set your aas, i had to save and reset 4 times while i was boxing, but it has been fun so i dont mind
Fun stuff
# Sep 19 2005 at 10:23 AM Rating: Decent
The best success we've had was with Naggy, War, Sk, CLRx3. we'de put naggy ontop of the chest, clerics behind him with one of the Tanks the other tank right infront of naggy.

Mobs come in, when they all get there naggy fears everyone getting aggro. Do not do inital Ae taunt, clerics will get horrible aggro on first heal if you do. 2nd tank hanging in the back to taunt off clerics. Naggy and upfront tank assist each other for fast kills.

Clerics chain Ice-DOT pretty much everything they can, it adds up quick on those newbs raiding :). Also with the right AAs spent on poison improvement your nuke takes 1/3 of a mobs HP. if all 3 clerics are on same mob and all nuke, That takes care of that bard, chanter or cleric.

Have only seen gloves drop so far.
Beware...

I just did this 3 times, first two went off without a hitch. But the third go at it... We got to the 4th wave, as soon as the chanters got to us, they started charming people, the person playing Nagefen went down leaving one person mezzed and 3 of us charmed. Instead of booting the charmed people out of the instance and back to lavastorm, we were kicked to the character selection screen.

The earing was I believe to be the rare drop the gloves are the common drop in this event first two times I have done this quest got earing which I passed on had equal to so let peps get upgrades and last 8 times I have yet to see another earing just my thoughts but I do this for the aa's get almost 2 per finish so I don't really care about the loot just fun playing a different way in EQ and get XP

The zone is supposed to house giants, yet the doorways are too small to fit giants. You have to duck more than half the way back to the battle if you die.

One of the things you learn you will need your extra hotkeys provided by the new EQ button. Each player has to spend the points they get for playing whichever of the selected monster you play. You earn 1 AA for the mission. It was hard for me playing King Tranix to kill the bards (my main is a bard) but was fun killing the magicians, wizards and especially the enchanters LOL.

Incredibly fun mission, although it's a bit easy once you understand the 'trick' behind it. Just pick all healers other than King Tranixx and Nagafen (Tranixx has some sweet abilities for the encounter, which is why I recommend the King).

Excellent encounter, one I'll be doing again and again in different ways to try out different tactics.

Each wave is 16. First wave is largely Clerics, Paladins, Rogues, Shaman, Shadowknights and Warriors. Second wave is largely Beastlords, Bards, Enchanters, Necromancers, Monks and Wizards. They seem to alternate. I haven't done the event enough to determine if this is the pattern it ALWAYS takes, but in three runs, that seems to be the case.
Fun

lol This mission is a hell of a lot of fun. I had a blast doing it. Its not really hard, if you understand it. Its pretty simple. Naggy is a 55 Warrior stype mob. All the "raiders" are LB to DB to him. They don't have a lot of HP based on what I saw. I don't recall the zone changing names. Also if you die, you respawn in the mobs normal place on the map, and will have to run back to rejoin the fight. Good thing is, if you die you don't lose any experience. You're missing Priests of Nagafen and Warlord Skarlon in the related characters list. If I do the mission again, which I probably will, I'll get a screen shot of the Priests of Nagafen.
