Find Ramos Jerwan in the Plane of Knowledge (a barbarian near a pool at location -30, +1430) and hail him.

You say, 'Hail, Ramos Jerwan'

Ramos Jerwan says 'Good day traveler... perhaps you have come to help me with my studies?'

You say, 'I can help you with your studies.'

Ramos Jerwan says 'It's quite simple really. I'm interested in studying some aquatic specimens from around the planes... will you take up your pole and give me a hand?'

You say, 'How can I give you a hand?'

Ramos Jerwan says 'There are some particularly interesting cichlid swimming about in the Plane of Nightmare. I also hear the discus in the Plane of Valor are quite plentiful. I need you to bring me two sets of bones from each for study. You do know how to extract them, yes? If not, I believe the lovely Peras Glickon may have something that can instruct you. Best of luck lad.'

Nightmare Cichlid are fished in Plane of Nightmare, and Vallorian [sic] Discus are fished in Plane of Valor. Prepare these as per the standard prepared fish recipe: fish, roots, celandine herb, filleting knife in a tackle box, trivial 182. Give two of each type of bones to Ramos Jerwan.

Ramos Jerwan says 'Ah, you've done quite well. Take this, it's a special gift I recovered from a recent adventure, and I can think of no greater person to keep it than you. Remember if you're in need of fishing supplies, come see us any time.'

The reward is Fisherman's Companion, which summons Brell's Fishing Pole, adds 3% to Fishing skill, and, most importantly, summons ale.

I find teh bones listed in the bazaar all the time - some go a tad rediculous at 200p+ per bone but hey just dont buy em.

I was buying bones at 75p per and then selling the quest for 500p :)....made lots of friends and also 2kp :) in about half hour.

Another mate said he had the price at 1kp and was still moving them - the guilt set in though.

Either way yah do it...much simpler then getting to PoV or PoN and setting up for fishing when a nice MOB can come up behind yah a smack yah silly (jk).

Anyway gl and gh.

Ok, I may be nuts, but here is something I have observed:

I think the fish in PoV can only be caught during the day and the ones in PoN can only be caught at night. I went through about 3 stacks of bait in each zone and got nothing at the wrong time of day. But then, bang, it got dark or light and they were jumping onto my line. It was 5AM for the PoV and about 7PM for the PoN fish. Might save you some time and some bait! Good luck!

I did this quest in a couple of hours I think. Most parts can be bought in bazaar. The trivial on the combine is 182.

Fun item! I use it to raise my alcohol tolerance while I fish.

I (47 rogue) and a friend (47 beastlord) are extremely eager to do this quest. We've pretty much decided to get outside help for the vallorian discus, but would like to get the nightmare chichlid ourselves if at all possible.

Tonight we headed out to PoN (my first time entering the zone, his second). I bumped into a fellow rogue on the way in and asked her if anything in there can see through a rogue's hide and sneak. She said yes, almost everything can (can anyone else please confirm this?) so plan A fell through.

Plan B was to enter the zone and look for a safe spot to fish visibly. After taking one look around (and almost wetting my armor), we decided there was no way to get to the water, let alone hang out and fish, without being brutallly, brutally killed.

So my question is, where on earth do you go to sit down and fish safely long enough to get 2 chichlids? Is there some sort of secret nook away from all the bloodthirsty red cons, or must you simply cast your line and say a prayer?

Fishing on the docks in PoN is safe. I did this quest for a ton of guildies and most of my alts, and I sat on the docks the whole time.

Sittin' on the dock of a river,

RE: how?

Okay, I've answered my own questions.

The rogue sneak/hide aggro is very strange in PoN. I grouped there today and tested it out, conning each thing we pulled before attacking it. At first I was completely baffled, as it seemed many things would sometimes be scowling and sometimes be indifferent. I THINK I have concluded that some things don't see through hide at all, and those that can will only see you if they're FACING you, otherwise they will con indifferent.

So, with that in mind, I zoned in and headed south to the small stream that flows east. I stuck to the wall and approched the stream where the 2 treants spawn. When I faced them, they scowled, but when I snuck behind, they didn't. I positioned myself south of the stream, slightly west of the real tree that's just in front of the treant. Both were indifferent from this location. To the north there was a blood raven, and to the south a young bat. Both were also indifferent (and seemed to be indifferent permanently).

Staying hidden, I fished. I went through 3 stacks of Catch-a-lot Bait over the time span of one SoW. I caught 3 Nightmate Chiclid, 3 Waterleaf Scales, a Crawdad, and plenty of the usual (fresh fish, scales, rusty daggers). My fishing skill was 119 when I started, and 125 when I finished.

I was never attacked.

Hope this helps!

I believe what happened when you tested your hide/sneak combos on some mobs was that when behind a mobs back while in sneak mode you are technically invisible to them, that's what sneak is good for. It changes the con to indifferently and is very useful for training with dubious guildmasters.
RE: how?
# Oct 16 2003 at 2:16 PM Rating: Decent
Aye, I knew about training with angry guild masters and buying from racist merchants, but this was the first time I had encountered an NPC that could see through hide&sneak while facing them :)

Apparently it's a widely known fact that monsters who can see you from the front can't see you from the back. 4 years of playing, and I never knew that ;P It has come in handy several times since I learned.

I would guess the boning of the fish is trivial around 170-180 at fishing. I was boning these around 160 and it wasn't trivial and it did take a few tries...

Started out with 19 fishing skill on Thursday. Now around 60 (And Alcohol Tolerance 89! *BUUUURRRRPPP!!!!*) and I personally like Gunthak to fish in. As I am a baker, I hope to one day catch a few stacks of Gourami and cook em.

Very Easy Quest
# Mar 10 2003 at 11:08 PM Rating: Default
This was very easy to do with a fishing skill of 200. It took me less than a stack and 1/2 of bait to get the fish and Foraged roots in no time. If you are looking for the celandine herb you can find it in room right above Ramos Jerwan at LOC neg27, pos1383 from Severg ODanos for about 5pp each. I usually see Fileting knives for about 5pp in bazaar as well. All in all it took me maybe an hour to do tops. Well worth it for fishing pole that summons Ale. I can now become the Drunken Fisherman I have always aspired to do in EQ.

The docks in PoN are safe, once you get to them. They are usually camped as well, and it's doubtful a group would mind you fishing while they hunted.

Another note: the bones are all droppable, you don't have to do the fishing yourself to do the quest.
RE: PoN fishing
# Oct 21 2003 at 7:46 AM Rating: Decent
My experience on the docks were different Daeanor. I was sitting there waiting on a couple of peeps to start killing, and a big lag spike hit. About 4 seconds later it cleared up, MA was on the ground, and a werewolf was all over our ranger. Anyway, bard and I jetted out of there as fast as possible. I forgot what the name of the WW was, a nightmare stalker or something. Conned red to me I believe when I was 55. Been a while, anyway, I hope this helps.
Fishy fishy
# Dec 30 2002 at 10:43 PM Rating: Decent
The specific fish needed for this quest are definitly a bit more rare than the rest of the stuff you reel in. Took me at least 6 stacks of bait(Catch-a-lot bait) before I had 2 of each fish. The PoN fishing was the only dangerous part to this quest. I found it easiest to fish invised near a static Bloodraven just by the waterfall. Just remember to run off a bit to reinvis. In PoV I just ran along the zone wall from GYard till I found a lake. Nothing there was KOS to me and I did my fishing in peace.

Great quest to do for the time and risk involved.

I've gotten my fishing up to 15x in a short time since I've been LFG more often with PoP out. It stinks when I break my fishing pole in PoN or PoD and have to run back to PoT to pick up another one. The quest is pretty simple if you have a decent fishing and smithing skill. I already had a filleting knife which I used to get my baking up to 135. The cast time for the ale is 2 seconds so you can have a stack pretty quick :)

Now I just need a grub summoner. Bard forage is not very reliable.

Update: Got mine within a week of getting flagged for PoV. The river across from the razorfiend cave turned out to be a safe place to fish.
Level?
# Nov 08 2002 at 2:18 PM Rating: Default
It says that the minimum level is 60. Obviously people below 60 are gaining this item, as the person above is level 55.

Is there a way for a 51st level get to the river/lake (watersource) in the two planes and fish solo without having to fight Planar mobs??
RE: Level?
# Nov 09 2002 at 12:19 PM Rating: Default
well, to get to the fish in PoV isnt the problem, nothing there will agro on you if you keep to the wall. but unless you are 59 or 60, you arent likely to pass the trial which gives you access to this plane. hence, it's a lvl 60 quest.

Yep, the level 60 assumes you're doing the entire quest yourself. It is possible to do the trial in PoJ to get you into PoV lower than 60 though, I'vee seen people as low as 52 trying it. It's be difficult though.

Though it's extroidianrily dangerous, you can fish for the cichlids in PoN as low as 45. I did it at 49... little trick, you can actually fish while feigning death, if you position yourself right! The blood ravens and bats are at fixed positions so are pretty easy to avoid, but keep your eyes open for wandering treants and the ocassional spider.

If you can't finish the trial, try hanging around PoT and see if anybody will give you or sell you the valorian discus.
RE: Level?
# Mar 13 2003 at 9:32 AM Rating: Default
Actually, you can't fish in PoN til you're 46, cause you can't get in until at least 46.
Broken quest??
# Nov 05 2002 at 10:58 PM Rating: Default
As of 11/05/02 This quest may be broken. On Bertoxx, I turned in the fish bones (2 of each) and got nothing in return. GM said they are looking into it.
