Added the separate entry, separated the drop list, and updated the associated quests as best as possible. Feel free to fill in remaining blanks.
Anyone have a clue to the Arlena quest? Cleared Mistmoore multiple times and can't find any type of item pertaining to Arlena.

Wow I finally ran accross a reference to Arlena in the Prima's guide, EverQuest The Ruins of Kunark on page 302.

I’m also interested in this quest. I really enjoyed the Bloodsabers quests and this one leading to Castle Mistmoore has been a bit of a puzzle for quite a while.
Before the official forum makeover (in fall 2012 I believe), there were a small number of threads on the official forums concerning Grimrot and Arlena. I just searched the archived forums but found nothing relating to either character. I find this strange but that's another issue. What I remember reading is that, at one time, Arlena was indeed found in the Castle Mistmoore zone, but was removed very early in the history of EQ. By very early I’m thinking before any of the expansions were released. But I can no longer find those posts to reference them.
In addition to the ground spawns posted by Yther, I found the following:

I searched for anythign relating to Grimrot, Arlena, bones, and remains, and found nothing, other than Grimrot's drop, his heart. I will look for re-arranged letters of Arlena later. Didn't find any place that listed the Mistmoore ground spawns, but there are a bunch of them, one that I don't remember if it was known what it's for, was inside one of the rooms, just as soon as you drop down to the secret passage from the graveyard.
Since I couldn't find any items, I'm thinking it's probably a ground spawn, since there are so many Mistmoore.
Just now re-arranging letters in my head, got Near LA (or maybe LA = Library Assitant).
Sorry not much help, but maybe I gave some directions you hadn't thought of already. :-/

Solo'd him with my 15 ranger, just ran backwards along west wall and shot him to sh*t, (bit of a twink) took about 18minutes lol, dropped clicky scythe and regular one

I'm beginning to feel like Grimrot's undead version may just be a myth. I've been trying for his undead version for over a week, and I've only ever seen/killed the live version once. I don't even know what the undead version LOOKS like, so a lot of times, I end up clearing the area around the PH spawn just so it might help determine undead Grimrot from the other skeletons. Can anyone please post a picture of undead version, or maybe email it to me? Superstooge@comcast.net

Looks like a normal skelly. Came across the bridge from NK to do some hunting and there he was in the center of the ring - with his pet. Conned DB to a level 34 Bard.

Was running through SK today with my 56 Ranger and say old boy on track. Figured I'd take him out. It was the undead version. Piece of cake kill and dropped the Pestilence Scythe (not the quest version it seems) and "a decaying heart". I haven't found anything around about this heart. Apparently not related to the qeynos quests involving decaying sternum and such. Anybody with any clues on this?

This guy can be found in the undead camp fairly close to the entrance to NK. Zone in from NK and go south and you will run straight into the undead camp. Conned Db to my 39 Beastlord. I pulled up warder, medded to about 50% mana after fulling buffing myself and warder and went to town. He is a toughie. His HT did about a full blue to my warder in HP and he hits 30-80. Plus he does all the nasty SK spells. Strength steal, and whatever one looks like mud and makes you walk super slow. He got me down to 22% before dying and no mana left and then I still had to deal with his pet. His pet died in about 2 rounds from me and hasted warder (Yekan's Quickening). Had I prepared better and been at full mana this guy would have been much easier.

I am a gnome Cleric of the 45th season on tallon zek i camped the skelly camp for my aegis of life i have soloed the live and undead one and all i have to say is its easy as cake. For the undead one wich took 8hours to spawn just beat him down with all ur undead spells including dots like turning of the unatural. For the live one wich is a little harder i feared the pet then nuked the lord with resolution for full dmg he HT'd me. So i think buff urself wiht all u got. When he HT's u there is ur Q to dominate thats all hes got root him until one sticks then heal urself. go back fear him and then keep nuking untill hes dead. (pet stayed feared the whole time.)

I just killed Lord Grimrot today.. Had no idea what he was for as I'd never seen him there before. Conned Light Blue to me at 49, so I figured it'd be an easy kite... Wrong! this guy has insane magic resistance.. I must have tried to stick my chants on him 30 times before I have up.. not a single one took hold. I had to bust out my wristsnapper and symphonic saber and go at him melee style. I was twisting Jonathan's Provocation and three pulses of Shield of Song to lessen his blows.. Damn though.. He was consistently still doing better damage than I was and I had to run in circles at about 2 blue bubs of health just to regen a bit. Then I busted out Denon's, the bard's equivalent of harmtouch.. his pet took the full 361, Grimrot only took about 180 damage.. still evened the odds in my favor though, and I was able to kill him with a bubble of health remaining. Dropped two versions of the scythe, the quest item and a regular one which for some reason bards can equip even though we do not get 2HS skill. If you're planning on taking this guy out, be prepared for a good fight.. he tried to fear me multiple times, stuck a steal strength on me which lasted at least 15 minutes, and hit for into the 60s I think, tough little bastard for his level. Not worth the effort unless you really need that quest Scythe IMO.

I've been camping this guy for 6 days...killing the PH between 4-7am and pm. Im not there to kill him...Im doing the trumpy irontoes skull quest. Anyway, so far no luck. I actually went through the trouble of petitioning and asking if he was broke, of course that just resulted in a GM telling me "as far as I know...no". I actually had hopes they would make him spawn to make sure heh. As far as I know Im doing everything right..its just a random spawn and Ive been very unlucky. I will post again when I find out the reward for the skull quest cause nobody seems to know what it is.

Getting lots of faction with mass-killing the camp (is that the faction needed to get the quest?) also farming bone chips for faction. Sigh...so boring. At least I can powerlevel my lil guys there at the camp.

Can a 51 ranger take him down solo?
I have never done the live version, but the dead version was pretty easy for my 29 Ranger to solo. His harm touch almost got me, but with my melee and nukes of Ignite in between swings, I was able to outdamage him. I just rooted him to begin with and then meleed his pet to death (can't have him hanging around interrupting your casts), root held the till pet was dead, didn't even bother to root him again (that was a mistake). Next time I would keep him rooted and nuke him to death to avoid that Harm Touch, or maybe bow kite with SoW up (didn't have SoW at that time). He con'ed white to me at 29 though his level is given as 30, I was very close to leveling myself so that must be why. They say that the live version has good Magic Resistance, so I would be careful to make sure you have all your AC and HP buffs up and use your melee skills to beat him. Anyhow at 51 it should be very easy.

One more thing. Live Lord Grimrot does have very high MR/FR/CR (yes his all around resists are good not just MR) for his level. He is no match for lures however. If a 44+ Wizard is handy to help you, get them a sow and they can kite this guy easy.

To confirm what the previous poster stated, it's very easy to get the ph/Grimrot to spawn at night or day. Whether it's useful to do so is another question but killing him at 5PM or AM always resulted in the desired time frame for me. BTW I eventually saw undead pop at night and live pop during the day.

5pm/5am CST? PST? EST? ??? So far I've kille the undead a couple of times, no sweat for a pally or cleric, undead is the bugger I'm waiting on. Starting to believe he only pops in the morning.

You're not a noob if you subscribe to the ph timing theory. The overwhelming evidence from people who've done the camp is that, at the very least, undead Grimrot is far more likey to spawn at night than live Grimrot and vice versa. As for the possible 45 minutes variance in spawn times, if you were to plot a graph of spawn times you'd find a big cluster of points right around the 3 hour 14 minutes point. Does't have to be a guaranteed time for this theory to make sense.

I happened to find him in skele form. Just passing through, seeing what his loot was for. Got that scyther thingy and a Decaying Heart. He conned even to 31, so he can be other than 30 i gesss. He harm toched foro about 331 i think, something in the neighborhood. Low life, pathetic resistances.

He have alot of resist. Did as 51 bard. Dispelled all his buffs. Then tried snare, dot cold, dot magic, dot fire. All resist. In maybe 1 of 30 I got a snare. So very high resist. Had to go charm gnolls on him. A pain to be lvl 30 and resist all from a 51 bard.
he was 35... HEs a SK and HT me for 351. Tried to cast darkness and tapped me for 45.

Took Live Grimrot down - 41 pally and a 48 druid - tooke me down to about half health and he resists casting a lot- plus he did the strength debuff on me - still hanging around endlessly for the undead spawn as there are at least 2 other people camping him off an on *yawn*
Anyone know what the putrid bone chips (the lore ones) are for - tried handing them over to several people with no response

I managed to solo live version of him (54 cleric), barely, fight ended with me 161/1362. I got off 4 reckoning's (640DD) for 255, 455, 555, 355, tanked him the rest of the way, resisted 2 sound of force and 3 roots, i had to self remedy 5 times in fight, once he was dead, pet was easy to tank. Lesson here is REMEMBER TO BUFF DAMN IT :)

There are several pallies who describe their experiences with grimrot on here, but no details from clerics. Has anyone soloed either grimrot with a cleric, or only with help? If you have done it, what level, and how tough?
From the posts on this site, the undead grimrot sounds pretty easy. My cleric is lvl 44, and I will probebly try to solo undead grimrot. I should be able to absorb a harmtouch from a lvl 30 with no sweat, then alternate stuns with undead nukes til he falls.
The live grimrot sounds like a problem. If he is as magic resistant as the posts say, I'm assuming that I cannot use a root/nuke, or stun/nuke strategy and take him down. Has anyone tried getting a chanter to tash him first? I'm wondering how much help I would need, and what type. I have more caster friends than melees, and so the resistance thing might be a big problem. However, if he can be tashed, and my spells would stick after, I could probably take him out from there.

I killled the live version of Grimrot yesterday. I am a cleric of 51 seasons. I was not able to catch him as soon as he poped so he was buffed and ready for me when i got there. I did not have any resist spells up but did have all of my HP buffs on for 1941 HP.
For being light blue, he was quite a fight. He resisted 3 of 5 Immobolize. I gave up casting them due to the resists and let him (and his pet) pound on me while I nuked away. I cast Retribution and only one landed at full damage. I totaled up all of the ones that I cast and he took on average 57% of the normal damage, resisting the rest. He had about 1800HP (I cast for 1772 damage and also hit him with my Dark Ember inbetween casts (and when interrupted)). I was just under 2 bubbles and very LOM when he ran.
Note: He also fully resisted the damage from the Dark Ember when it proced.

I wanted to add some more information on spell casting and the live Grimrot. This time I was helping out a low level paladin. I cast 7 Retributions and they varied from a low of 36 point to a high of 140 points (yup, a high of only 140). I cast 5 Immobolize and all 5 were resisted. One Fear type spell was cast and also resisted. Using 2000+ mana I took him down less than half way. So, in the first fight he took 57% of normal damage. The second time I faced him, he took about 18% of normal.

I killed the live version of Lord Grimrot today with my level 52 paladin. Needless to say it was a tough fight. Here are some things to keep in mind about this guy.
1. He has a harmtouch for about 350hp of damage.
2. He resisted Force (a stun spell that does a modest amount of damage that paladins can cast at level 52) EVERY TIME.
3. Something that I have not seen mentioned is the fact that he casts an instant Strength tapping spell of some sort (Vampiric Touch?) that sucked my strength down to about 92 from a high of 122. Additionally, I did not resist this spell a single time despite having a magic resistance of 79 and a disease resistance of 80.
4. The highest amount of melee damage he did to me was 78.
5. At level 52 he conned light blue.
6. Finally, from counting the number of times I hit him and using an estimated average damage per swing he had about 1700-1800hps.
7. I did not have to LOH, but I ended the fight with only one blue bubble of health.
8. Finally, I killed his PH at 5pm EQ time, and he spawned about 3hours and 10 minutes later. Interestingly enough it seems he spawns 10 minutes sooner than the placeholder putrid skel which is on a 3hour 20minute cycle.

Killed him (live version) twice yesterday on Xev server, spawned one after the other. I had logged in 3hrs later to see if he or a PH would spawn. His live version reappeared and I shouted to zone he was up as I didn't need his scythe again.
I then logged and came back on 1/2 an hour later to ensure someone had cleared spawn but he was still up. I did a quick check to ensure no one was camping then attacked him. Very soon into the fight I noticed cleric nukes hitting him but didn't have time to look around.
After killing him I turned to see a party that had unfortunately appeared just slightly too late. But the nice cleric who was amongst them got to loot body and so the remains didn't go to waste.
The first fight was tough as stated by the other 52 Pally, I ended with 1 bub on health from that fight. I can confirm he resisted the Force (stun) spell every single time but only partially resisted or didn't resist my only DD fire based spell.
The second fight went much easier, and I am sure it was due in no small part to the clerics assistance. Although I can't confirm how much damage was dealt out or what he resisted from the clerics part.
I also took alot less damage due to the timing of proc from my sword which proc's Rune III and had proc'd three times during fight saving me at least 700hps.
BTW: Second spawn of live version of Grimrot was at night so I am not convinced of timing spawn etc. However like the fool I am I am sure I will continue to kill at specific times... just in case... I am also glad someone who needed the items got to loot them.

After killing him I turned to see a party that had unfortunately appeared just slightly too late. But the nice cleric who was amongst them got to loot body and so the remains didn't go to waste.
The first fight was tough as stated by the other 52 Pally, I ended with 1 bub on health from that fight. I can confirm he resisted the Force (stun) spell every single time but only partially resisted or didn't resist my only DD fire based spell.
The second fight went much easier, and I am sure it was due in no small part to the clerics assistance. Although I can't confirm how much damage was dealt out or what he resisted from the clerics part.
I also took alot less damage due to the timing of proc from my sword which proc's Rune III and had proc'd three times during fight saving me at least 700hps.
BTW: Second spawn of live version of Grimrot was at night so I am not convinced of timing spawn etc. However like the fool I am I am sure I will continue to kill at specific times... just in case... I am also glad someone who needed the items got to loot them.

Man I camped this for 4 1/2 days killing at 3-5am and never got undead to spawn, then a patch happened and I gave up.

Update: Got my Aegis today, dead version finally spawned for me. I can confirm much much easier to kill. The undead version did spawn for me at night, but purely for the fact I was camping and then logging back on when spawn was due.
Pure law of averages meant some spawns were at night. I am unsure of faction required as I was at ally from doing the soulfire quest but I had no problem, after i stated "I came to defend life" or what ever the quote was.
Undead version resisted nothing...

For those of you that asked, the PH is a putrid skellie that is standing up. This spawn time starts from when you kill whatever popped last, and goes about 3 hours and 15-45 minutes. I have gotten a blank where nothing popped after 4 hours. In which case come back around 6-7 hours after the previous one got killed. Also, these will not depop. If you can't take out the live grimmy (almost made me LoH, a 47th lvl pally) the spawn cycle will not continue. I've seen 4 live ones, including the first one that I just happened upon and no dead ones so far.

You need to kill all the crumpled putrid skeletons in the undead ruins in the NW part of SK (head due south from NK and you'll see the ruins on your right). Kill all the putrids and wait. Under one of the little shanty things a *standing* putrid skeleton will spawn. He is the placeholder.
The other putrid skellies are irrelevent, unless you want to kill them for faction. The only one that affects grimrot's spawn is the placeholder, the standing putrid skelly. He's on a timer around 3hrs and 10-20 minutes. He pops on that schedule, regardless of what you do to the other skellies.

Camping skellies one day for necro food I came across this strange fellow, Con'd blue to me at 34 so I shouted out and asked for info. A 54ish rogue said that he wanted to help take him down. Of course I didnt want to die so I said sure. I started to fight trying to fear Grimrot, he resisted. Then the rogue set out on him, he ended up telling me to run when he had 2bubs of health left, I started to run but he killed Grimrot, BARELY.
He looted the crap scythe and let me loot the Lore Scythe, kinda cool I guess just to mess around with. Gonna check up on quest now.
By the way, this post isnt a lie, so dont gimme any crap, I do believe that this guys lvl varies greatly even though he always cons low.

The problem is, there are two lord grimrots. The level listed, seems to be for the undead guy (about lvl 30), while the picture is for the live one. I have killed the live grimrot 4 times, and he has always conned dark blue at lvl 44. I believe I read that his level is 33-35. He doubles for about 80pts, and resists a lot. I cannot even come close to soloing him, but have no trouble if I can recruit any melee type over lvl 30, preferrably one who taunts, or a few melees around high 20's. Retribution (496 pt dd) averages for about 300hp's, and he doesn't completely resist often. Have the melee tank him, and nuke him down. Heal melee as needed. root pet, or ignore it, until Grimrot dies. The pet is a wuss. Only problem is it does interrupt some with bashes. So rooting is better.

This guy hits really hard, luckily when I had half a bub of HP left someone pulled him away then I healed myself, he conned black to me at 34, and hes got a bad ass DOT.

the middle structure - what ever you want to call it - that doesnt have a yellow block on top is where the PH or Grim spawns. It will be the only standing Putrid Skeleton.

I'm afraid you didn't get a part of it. Lord Grimrot in his human form drops 2 scythes. One which is used for the quest is NO DROP. The other is just newbie trash. Afraid you have to get scthye after all.

I have read about all these time posts, 5am, 7am, 5pm, 7pm ... are these EQ time? 5am when the sun rise in SK, 5pm when the sun set in SK? And 3 hours per spawn, is it 3 real life hours or 3 EQ hours?

They all mean everquest time. I thought it meant RL time also and was like 12 hours!!?? but it only means everquest time. like 5 minutes per hour or something. not a big deal really.

Ok this is what I got during my camp, if you kill the PH at 5am you will he the PH or dead grim to spawn at night, 5pm you'll get PH or live grim to spawn. If you kill him on this time it just allows you to target when he'll pop, all this 1 in 6 stuff is crap from what I've seen btw this guy is a rare spawn and is random there is no set event or any of that other crap people like to guess at the only way to get him is to have him spawn in day or night depending what version you want and hope you get him instead of the PH. With waiting and luck is the only way you'll get this guy (to keep the PH alive untill you kill him at 5am/pm pull him to the nw corner and hold him with roots till the time comes, this will keep the noobs from running through the camp and screwing it up on you). I got mine finaly =)

Funny, you call others noobs, then you buy into the old timing the spawn thing, which several people have said is not true. I have had live grimrot spawn at night, as well as during day, so this timing thing doesn't work. Plus, since the spawn time has a range of about 45 minutes, from just about 3 hours, to nearly 4 hours, there is no guarantee that killing at a certain time will lead to a day vs. night spawn, since that range translates to around 12 hours game time.

On the Rathe, a 35 Shammy friend of mine and, myself being a 35 Shadow Knight, were heading to Rathe Mtns. through the Karanas when I passed his spawn point. Having never seen him before, I thought it quite interesting <I was under Gather Shadows>. I proceeded to ask about his spawn, loots, etc. when my Invis droped. Well, heres the odd deal. He hit me. Whats so odd? NPC Shadow Knights open with Harm Touch...he didnt do it once. Anyhow, we took him down with some moderated difficulty, a Harm Touch, and 6 Greater Healings from the Shammy <I had Iksar BP too, so that prob. helped>. I looted Scythe <Quest Version> and we went on our way after disposing of his pet. I am just surprised no Trackers had found him before we wandered on to him.

He probably used up the harmtouch on some passing mob. I have seen him attack aviaks and other mobs who wander too close. In fact, if there is no competition for the spawn, I recommend waiting until he uses the harmtouch on a pasing mob, as a way to make the fight easier. doesn't take long, something wanders through in the first few minutes.

I am a level 27 cleric on Rallos and was hunting with a 26 Bard buddy today in SK. One of the bard's good friends was also in SK - she being a level 40 bard. She told us she had seen Lord Grim live version and asked if either of us needed to loot. About 3 minutes later she asked us to meet her at bridge because she needed help. We got there and the 2 bards kited and attacked him while I healed and after about 15-20 minutes he was dead and I had my Scythe.

2)he has been known to spawn with as few as one PH between spawns, up to several. (A friend of mine had 12 PHs between Grimrot spawns.)
That is a pretty good case that it's a random spawn.

Here is the deal to get both of the Grimrots to spawn:
First off, getting Grim instead of his PH is a 1 in 6 chance. When you see the PH, check the EQ time. If you kill the PH betweem 6am and 9am you will have a chance for the Undead Grimrot. If you kill the PH between 6pm and 9pm, you will have a chance at getting the Live Grimrot. If you kill the PH at any other time, you will automatically get the PH again! Once you have killed the PH, it will be another 3 and 1/2 hrs before the next spawn.
Good Luck!
