Impalment
# Oct 19 2003 at 12:51 AM Rating: Decent
Ew... I understand why it would be piercing.. considering you would be impaling (which is a lovely consept itself.. bleh) someone (namely an orc) but.. range?

I dont want to know how you would do that from a distance...

Maybe throw it in the air and hope it lands straight down on-

/shivers

(If you are wondering why I bothered... think about it in a roleplay mode)

Friends friends FRIENDS!!! sheeesh. first of all, your a ranger. you will use your bow when your ready for range. it should look distintly enough you should not throw it away? In MOST cases you put items in range to utilize their stats and when you outgrow them. Most are very valuable for that reason. but yes, it would be a pain in the butt for a ranger. Maybe they should have made it a bow? lol.

i aggree on the wishful bane damage.

Finally got the Shadowman Leader to spawn. I went through over a dozen PH's. The spawn point mentioned isn't the only place he spawns OR he ran away too fast to agro on my sitting toons right there. Sometimes I'd check at timer and he'd be attacking. Anyway if anyone else tries this quest be prepared to spend a day or two camping for this guy.

i'm sure 40 is the range at which it can be thrown when equipped in range slot. and when in prim/sec it's normal melee range...notice no range is listed on prim/sec weapons like swords, clubs and what nots...hmmmm...think about it!
RE: Impalment

I haven't actually seen the weapon yet but would imagine that as a thrown weapon it would work much like a spear/javelin. Imagine impaling from a distance, right through the midsection.

Would be nice if this weapon actually had some bane damage against orcs, may be more usable then.

You Sir, are clearly what we define as a dumb *** idiot. Research before you spit out this crap. You saying that we don't use our bow as often at higher lvls is like saying pallies will hardly use 2hs at higher lvls.

Groth man, you have obviously never even ventured in to the world of norrath as a Ranger. Ranger's are absolutley DEADLY with a bow. Their is NO other class that is as skilled with a Bow as a ranger is. Yeah, other classes can USE a bow, but we are MASTERS with it.

Oh and your snide remark about +4 stat modifiers. LOL Check out https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=14662 the Bow of Storms. Why in the world would I put the stupid Orc Impaler up when I had this? LOL. You need to level a Ranger before you start bashing em.

Think of the bows that were avail back in the day when this quest was actually intended. Heck, I don't think double bow damage was even thought of then
RE: listen rangers geez
# Jul 23 2002 at 3:40 AM Rating: Decent
So...Rangers use bows more often at lower levels as compared to higher levels? Do you even know what a high level Ranger can do with a good bow in his hands? Apparently not judging from you're post. Did it ever occur to you that BOWS can have stats too? Put your account back on ebay where it belongs...
RE: listen rangers geez
# Jun 02 2002 at 9:26 PM Rating: Excellent
Are you kidding me? Its actually the exact opposite of your first statement. Ahem...

1) Rangers are the only class that can critical hit with bows, and even though you can at low levels, a lvl 5 ranger probably wont have a very high dex. At higher levels, you will have a higher dex, scoring more crits, scoring more damage.

2) At lvl 55(high lvl) rangers get the Trueshot Disc. One of the most useful discs in the game. You use your BOW, not your weps for this disc. EXTREMELY useful on raids, tons of damage dealt.

3) There's a thing called GOOD bows, usually attainable at higher lvls... not lower levels. If you think that some newbie bow would be better for a low level than a great bow for a high level, your smokin something...

4) Another thing good to know in EQ: AA points. Rangers get class specific points centered around archery. Endless Quiver, infinite amount for WHATEVER arrow is in your range slot and innate bow haste. Yes that means that you can have an infinite amount of Gloomwater arrows, 10 150 and its LORE... or one of the higher Luclin fletched items I don't know about. Archery Mastery, increasing your max bow damage up to 2 times with 3 points in the skill.

Please... if your not a ranger and don't truly know about the usefulness of bows in the life of a ranger, then don't get mad at other people that know. Sure if your in direct combat, you would probably switch your bow out for stats... but other than that, bow is the way to go.

Peace rangers

errrm Actually, Rangers aren't the only class that can crit with bows, they only get crits with bows, not melee, but my warrior crits with her bow quite often.

Okumabear is correct. My warrior has gotten critical hits with his bow.

However, you are right on the other points. The pally who started this topic is basically wrong on all accounts.

My warrior has a great bow, with stats (twisted longbow) that he fires ONE time, maybe two per fight, as he's pulling the mob.

A Ranger on the other hand, can stand back from the fight, and pump arrows into the mob while I tank it, for massive DPS.

I've seen the damage done by my guild's 63 ranger, with Endless Quiver, A good bow and arrow, and disc up. Its insane. A warrior can't, and shouldn't even try, to fight this way.

The warrior is there to breathe in the face of the mob, smack the snot out of it, and keep it looking at him, while the ranger fills the mob with arrows (and of course the other damage types do their job).

Ranger + bow = awesome damage
Warrior+ bow = puller. One shot then melee, maybe a second shot if the mob runs slow :)

Uh, yeah, you listen Paladin. You are totally wrong about everything. Bows are what should be in the rangers range slot.

Rangers can hit for 1500ish with their bows at higher levels... and they almost never melee. Why don't you shut your "neb" paladin yapper.

its always a good idea to get all your weapon chocices up no matter what class you are i mean even a druid needs to learn 1hs for his epic and then theres the point of putting it in range that sounds reasonable untill you get your alt advancements then you can do some damage with your bow and quickly like 500dmg a shot and fire off 6 shots a min

The thing is, is that a bow with no stats isn't gonna help when you melee. If you can switch then during battles you can have more str wis and a few more hp's...it's a good range item.
why?

You need to learn piercing so you can use a dragon horn ykesha(yeah i know its just 1 weapon, but its fricking nice) plus its always good to have the option to use piercing weapons, and it only takes a couple hours in a group that allows you to practice it.

I agree. Rangers (and the other dual wield classes) have a HUGE advantage when it comes to one handed weapon training. You guessed it: stick the trainer in the offhand.

Yes, I know that skill advances much slower this way. The point is, it DOES advance, and you can still be a reasonably productive member of the group while you train. Or, if you're in a known/guild group, you can either put the trainer in the mainhand, OR equip 2 trainers for fastest advancement.

I know - nothing revolutionary. But, just pointing it out to the younger Rangers out there who want to train an alternate weapon skill (which they should) after lvl 17. Just be sure to keep the 2H skills up as well; they're not as easy to train, and you'll need them later on.

Yes there is such as thing as 2hp, Paladins and Warriors are the only ones who can do it I think. Check out the Messenger of the Queen, it's 2 hand piercing. This is only 1handed, great for us Ranger types. Just my 2 cents.

First off it is a one handed weapon.

Second, Verant seems to have moved away from the 1hs weapons being the only great weapons since Kunark and Velious came out so keeping piercing skill up is always a good thing for a ranger, or any melee class, not to mention that the stat boost of this weapon makes it something handy to keep in your range slot when you aren't using your bow; Just make sure to not throw it at a mob.

as for a ranger keeping piercing up..
i know i don't.
there arent many items that i would look for that are piercing. Most are low dmg, low dly.
Now, as for it being rng only and for rng slot..
Switching out this and a bow is horrible. You might accidently throw it when you think you have your bow in. besides that, 4 wis, 3 str, and 10 hp isnt the kind of thing i would put so much work into.

just my 2cp

I have to disagree there. There are acutally quite a few nice piercing weapons for rangers. To name a few would be this one, for mid-lower an Icy Blade, also a Dragon Horn Yak which has better ration than regular Yak and still procs,The Lupine Dagger is 9/18, +4 Dex, +4 Wis, and procs Greater Wolf Form. And lastly im just nameing a few here is the Fayguard Parrying Dagger. It is 9/17 10AC Procs Word of Pain. Imagine if your lvl 45 or around there, get one of these and your piercing skill was still 0. Man that would suck lol.

I am a ranger, and I dont see why we would use piercing. Im happy with my kodiak claws and PGT, frankly.

Why? The reason why is the Dragonhorn Ykesha. It is faster tan the regular yak and procs 1 lvl sooner, and guess what, its ranger only.

ok the whole point of this weapon is to keep it in ranged slot for stats, also there is a ranger only piercing weapon that is pretty darm good as well as a couple 2hb staffs out there that no good ranger should be without so it is up to you.

The whole point of this weapon? nothing it sucks like most questable weapons do before lvl 45. get it if you want to use a semidecent piercer... range slot, your fools not rangers, pshaw

I haven't played in a good few years, so I don't know if the game has drastically changed since I last had the pleasure (if it was even a pleasure then), but when I played you could drag weapon slots, ranged slots, backpacks, and basically every other thing onto your hotkey menu. This makes is extremely easy to switch out, say, a bow and an Orc Impaler from the time you're at range to the time you're in melee combat. I used to use this setup so that 3 simple clicks equipped my Swarmcaller for the slow proc, and then reequip my dual wield for damage. You should think about things a bit harder before you call them stupid or useless.

Ghoul boss spawn
# May 16 2001 at 3:33 PM Rating: Default

Ghoul boss spawn is not related to killing shadowman leader or doing any part of the quest, as I saw both of them up at the same time tonight while killing undead at the obelisk to try to get the DE necro to spawn.
Getting spawns

I have now spent a total of a week in lesser faydark attempting to get either the shadowedman leader or the ghoul boss to spawn. I have had no luck. Anyone know if the quest is broken/disabled or if there is something you have to do to get them to spawn other than killing all the other stuff at there spawn points.

Hello.

I was trying to get rancorous ghasts to spawn in lfay today. While killing skellies at the obelisk the ghoul boss spawned. Some friends finished him off. He spawned again not 15 minutes later right on the obelisks. He did drop the log book. Too bad no rangers were around :(. Anyway, he is out there...good luck. (at least on Povar he is :)
RE: Getting spawns
# Apr 22 2001 at 3:15 PM Rating: Decent
I got lucky in finding the Boss up at the undead rune, now i'm trying to get the Shadowed Man Leader. He does wander, sort of, on a set track through a little vally right beside the north zone wall, between the Gfay zone and the brownie village, PH is a normal Shadowed Man.
RE: Getting spawns
# Apr 02 2001 at 10:55 AM Rating: Default
Ok, after reading a post from a reliable source, the best way is to camp the ghoul boss first, just sit and kill everything at the ruins and he will eventually spawn.

Then go after the shadowman leader
RE: Getting spawns
# Apr 02 2001 at 10:50 AM Rating: Default
I can not confirm any of this, some posts have stated that the shadowman leader is a wandering mob as well and that none of the shadow men at the tower are his placeholder.

I also read a post stating that the ghoul boss will not spawn until you kill the shadowman leader and turn in the item to the NPC.

Then this triggers the Ghoul boss to spawn.

All evidence points to both of these MoBs being random spawns with placeholders. The well know PH for the Shadowman Leader is the wandering shadowman along the north wall (watch out for Brownie Scouts - i'd recommend pulling to the GFay zone area). The Ghoul Boss is just a rare spawn at the Undead Generator. Keep killing everything and he should pop, eventually. People have hinted that Brownies dont wander near the Undead Ruins. I can neither confirm or deny this.
