Was runnin through Warrens yesterday, and this bat lord starts hittin my friend! My friend is a lvl 55 SHAR BST, and I'm lvl 38 SHAR BST (what was the bat thinkin'?!). Anyway, he drops the "feared hat" lol! No camping, never knew of the quest, nada. Anywayz, I'll try turning it in, just to check it out, but if faction is not high enough,.... I'll just get exp instead.
Highly Underrated Item for Non Twink Warriors

For players like me who do not twink their characters, this is a surprisingly good item for Warriors.

First, soloing the Cave Bat Lord is easily done as a Warrior only 1 level higher than the Lord. In a group, it's simplicity, so a mid 20's Warrior can easily get the hat.

While there are a great many Warrior items with amazing Armor Class, the fact is until higher (30+) levels, the loss of AC is more than compensated for by the Agility and Dexterity boosts. The Int boost is an added bonus of sorts...few Warrior items raise Int, Int is usually a Warriors lowest stat, and Int is critical in raising skill points for ALL classes (ever notice how hard it is as a Troll to raise your skills)

Not bad at all for those who don't view EQ as a never ending quest to be Uber.

The WHOLE zone seems more geared to a SK and WIZZY then anything. Especially if you look over all the miniboss drops. Including mugglewump. a Lot of surprisingly good items, 20-50p giving quests and clickables that rock at the level to obtain. I might make a EUR SHA just for fun now....

Chanties
# Aug 21 2002 at 11:08 AM Rating: Excellent
Ok, I've been hunting this guy with my 31 chanter for a while. For all the chanters out there - YOU MUST DO THIS QUEST! why? Because first of all, the belt is a magic item, not lore...so you can collect a lot of them to sell if you have the time. Secondly, we chanters have no need to worry about faction - just cast Benevolence on Azzar and youre good to hand in his hat. And finally, it is one of the few belts (maybe the only one at early levels) that has an INT statistic. So, obviously, there is a good demand for it, especially those who cannot afford the other INT belts. So, as a chanter, I advise all other chanters to do this quest - its very rewarding and we don't have to go through all the trouble of getting faction standings like other classes. I usually run through and just camp the cave bat lord - the other kobolds dont bother me at lvl 31. Hope this helps yall
lvl to make it drop?

I wandered through the Warrens the other day omw to Stonebrunt to get some items for my monk (footpads of the tiger - drops off Snowbeast & robe of the great panda off of Giang Yin) and decided to drop this greenie to my 54 war just for kicks and HE DROPPED THE HAT. I really dont think it matters what lvl u are b/c I also got molars to drop off the regular kobolds too.
But I guess thats me ))

The trival loot code was removed from the warrens about a year ago, all kobolds will drop everything they usually drop, now. Before, if you were too high, you'd get a message saying that you couldn't loot the item due to the level and it would pop. That isn't in effect anymore, which is why the hat dropped for you. It used to happen with molars to me. Now they drop whenever I'm in there.

People basically complained that the trivial loot code was flawed (and it was); so they removed it. Any level can do this quest, but a good level to be over is about 20-25 before trying, unless you're really really tough, or something. =)
WHAT??

I looked up a black lace sash because I wanted to know where i could find one. It says above its the result of the quest, Azzar's dreadful hat. But I looked at the quest and it had NOTHING to do with the sash! The reward for the quest is the hat NOT the belt! Am i the only one who's noticed this?

The hat isn't the result of the quest, it's a component in the Black Lace Sash quest. Basically:

You go into the warrens and kill the batlord. He drops Azzar's Dreadful Hat. The name implies it belongs to someone. It does. Take the hat and give it to Azzar Habbib, a High level Necromancer just inside the newbie gate, (he's in the building up the stairs overlooking the newbie ground). You give him the hat. He likes you and gives you the Black Lace Sash as a reward. You say 'thanks Azzar' or you just leave like I did.

Or... He doesn't like you and gives you a punch in the nose... or his pet does.

Thats it. Thats the quest.

It takes a lot of kobold deaths to get him to like you. The hard part in the quest isn't getting the hat at all, the easy part is getting the hat. The hard part is handing in the hat to the guy to get the sash. However once he likes you, it becomes relatively cinchy to do.

Actually you're wrong. You see, the Azzar's Dreadful Hat quest has two parts. The first part gives you the sash, the second part gets you your own dreadful hat.

Well, no, since you can ask Azzar whenever you like (as long as he is amiable and you know the line) "What other tasks?" he will give out the second quest regardless of whether you've actually done the first one, or not.

Therefore, the quest is seperate, not exactly related in that you don't need to do one, to do the other.

This, to me, means the quests, while lead to each other, do not require each other to complete, and thus, I had no reason to mention it in the context of this thead here-- since the person is reffering to the droppable hat, NOT the quested hat.

Since Azzar himself tells you about the quested hat if you turn in the dropped hat, then, Yes, I did know about it, but what I said is correct as far as the initial quest goes.

Finally...

Been working on this quest for about a week I guess. Bat Lord was a relatively easy kill for a 26 Wiz, and dropped the hat the first time...but...getting faction up enough so I could turn it in was a little harder.

First I tried invising myself and handing the hat to Azzar from behind. But his pet spotted me, and I barely made it out of there in one piece. So I farmed Kolbolds. It took 711 kills of various mobs in Warrens to raise myself up to dubious ... all in all probably 24 hours of continuous Kolbold killing.

For you Wizzies out there, I would get a group of greens to aggro on me with my awesome meleeing skill and then drop cast force followed by column of lightning or shock of ice at whomever ran away (depending on how many lived).

I also would kill which ever blue mobs popped when I was around ... these blues are a well kept secret, each would give me about a full blue bubble exp and were pretty easy to root'n'nuke. They gave me 27 and are probably are enough for me to solo well past 30, but they are starting to get old. If I die anytime soon and can't get a rez, I might come back for them. 3 blue mobs == Exp lost from one poorly executed plan.

I also managed to collect a whole stack of barbequed eurodite (+3 INT when eaten) in the process, and also got me a Batling Eye (+2 INT, Range Slot ... not too shabby) but I never saw the Muglwamp (who I hear is a lot of fun).

Good Luck ... and Go Get Your Belt!

Batlord...

This is my basic experience with the quest.

I began trying to improve my faction at level 12, and it took me till level 17 to become dubious and do it. It took me a bit longer because I had suffered faction losses killing Elial Brook 20 times. Someone had let me loot the hat, though, and since it was no use to me otherwise, I began trying to hand it in after that.

I am now an ally with the heretics and have handed in the hat a few times. It's a hard quest for a few reasons.

Firstly, anyone who isn't an evil heretic or has good heretic faction will find it rather difficult to hand in to ole Azzar, since the hat is nodrop. I think Azzar himself is level 45 or so, and scowly to almost everyone. Cammoing and sneaking is an option but you face death if anything goes wrong. Also, under 20s won't be able to do it, as the bat is rather tough even at 25, and getting past the level 20-24 kobolds in the throne room on the way to the batlord is tough (they see through cammo AND invis and there are a lot of them).

However, once you get around the level limit and faction obstacles it becomes all to easy to do, and I managed to get a sash for all my friend's caster's, and my own which is about 6 sashes. It's a nice little caster sash, but unless you need a lot of them, or you're already amiable with the Heretics, it's better just buying it off someone for 100pp-- it saves a lot of time.

Sometimes if the batlord has the hat, he starts looking a bit like a bat-- pig-looking-snout, bat ears, and wing flaps. about 8 times out of 10, he will have the hat on him when you loot if he looks like that. (Unless he has a wicker helm on him, instead--both will show the batlike features). Looking batty is a good indication, but there are times he looks batty and won't have anything, though. I've never seen him look normal and have the hat, but I suppose it's possible too.

Anyway-- it's not a rare spawn-- for every 10 kills, he'll probably drop the hat about 6 times. The spawn rate is 45 minutes pretty much on the minute. Just keep killing him and it will drop.

Oh, and If you're looking to become dubious with the heretics, the higher end kobolds give better faction hits, and the named even better. Rather than just killing every kobold you see, camp the named if you can.

Hope that helps!

What I know
# Feb 17 2002 at 9:51 PM Rating: Good
I did this quest today and thought I'd pass along what I found out.

Killing the Cave Bat Lord is pretty easy for me 'cause I'm lvl 26. So he dropped the hat and I headed off to Paineel to pay a visit to Azzar. Never checked him out before so I cammo up and open the door. Do a quick F8 C and he is indifferent...hmm.. go back down the stairs drop cammo and with him still targeted hit C ..scowls...HHHMMMM... So I cammo back up and head in. I get behind him hit sneak and hide just in case. Give him the hat and he gives me the sash and xp. Cool. Cammo didn't drop either. All is well I figure and leave still sneaking. I get half way to the door and turn off sneak and thats when all hell broke lose. He and his pet start to attack but miss alot. I'm gonna run for the Toxx zone cause I know these guys are normally undercons. I am making the turn for the zone and he casts fear on me. Then to the astonishment of the newbies in the area I run around in circles 'till the fear wears off. I make it through the zone with almost full HP. Zone back in and Azzar is back in his room.
I figure if I didn't turn off sneak I would have made it out untouched. Next time I try and let ya know.
So it can be done with scowl faction and cammo.

# Feb 23 2002 at 12:36 AM Rating: Good
I've done this quest several times now and have succesfuly used sneak to leave untouched a few times. Sometimes it doesn't work. The worst I got was fried for about 100 hp's. Mostly he just fears me and his stupid pet tries to hit me. So now I have about 5 of these sashes gave away 2 already. The hat is not that uncommon so there must be alot around. I haven't tried to sell them yet so I don't know the price. Forest Loops go for 300+pp on my server and this has similar stats only 1 point lower on all and is INT instead of WIS. Still seems like a good sash.
Oh and I get the hat when the Cave Bat Lord is a kabold or a bat...

Azzar's Dreadful Hat....
# Oct 04 2001 at 8:41 PM Rating: Excellent
Ok, here is my 2 cents to add to the info.

I have spent lvls 20-24 in the Warrens and Stonebrunt, so I have gone by this Cave Bat Lord many a time (i think he has killed me once or twice too). I didn't attempt to start killing him until just recently. I have now killed him about 4 or 5 times on my way through the Warrens. The last time I killed him he dropped the hat. I was 23 at the time... (actually hit 24 from killing him).

He is pretty easy to kill at 23 or 24 for any class. The bats around him should not aggro at that level... and he is a fairly simple kill.

When I kill him I usually pull him into that big wide open room between his room and the kings room, and fight along the edge to avoid starting a train.

So far I have had no problems killing him, no tricks up his sleeve or anything. He seems that he drops the hat once out of every 5-10 times you kill him. I got it in 5 attempts.

Good Luck all,

Hat Dropping...

Sometimes if your level is to high, You get a message that the foe was a trivial kill, and the item doesn't drop.

I know this to be true in the warrens where I went with my Level 12 ranger, yesterday, to kill Kobolds for molars, but none dropped. Kept getting a message of "that was a trivial kill for your party." Someone explained that my level was too high and that someone with a lower level had to kill the target for the molars to drop. If I helped or gave it the killing blow, they wouldn't drop the molars.

He pulled the Bat Lord for me and my party, and he (lvl 20 rogue) beat the crap out of it and zoned for us to finish off the bat. The bad lord is tough. It had around 20 life left, and we COULD NOT hit it to finish it off. I have a 8dmg magic weapon, and hit for 10-18-- but everything we tried was futile. Us being me with my 12 ranger and My paladin friend (also 12). The bat lord had a SLIVER of life left, and we had full life, but try as we might we couldn't finish it off. Kept hitting for like 2, and 3-- He kept hitting me for like 40 a go, until I almost lost all of my 300 HP-- and it still had like 10 hp left. My paladin had to lay hands me to survive, and the killing blow was given to the bat soon afterwards.

But survive I did! And because we were low level, the bat dropped Azzars hat, and the rogue who pulled let me have it. So it does drop, albeit not for high levels. If you want the items in the warren's, you're going to have to make a character even or blue with the NPC, for it to drop. Would be good to go with a high friend so he can beat it up and zone, and you can finish it off so it drops, or you can enlist the help of lower level people in the warrens and split the loot like the rogue did with us.

The loot rules in the Warrens are designed to only give the drops to characters of a level to whom the mob is at least dangerous. My partner and I were there for a few hours last week and even the occasional just-green mob dropped stuff for us. Generally, if it will attack you (not counting assisting a fellow mob, I mean just plain attack you with no provocation) you probably won't get the trivial message.

I just camped the Cave Bat lord tonight. He spawned once an hour (I am absolutely positive about this), not every 30 minutes, so this may have been changed. I killed him 3 times. He did not drop the hat once. grrrr.

One more note... I am a dark elf wizard religion: Solusek Ro. Will my faction be high enough to do this quest?

Just to confirm - I clocked the Bat Lord (and the Huntmaster) through 3 consecutive spawns and he (they) is (are) still on a 60 minute timer. Noticed that the hat is an uncommon drop. Also, whether he looks like a bat didn't seem to be a conclusive indicator as to whether he has either the hat or the soft wicker cap; once he looked like a bat and had nothing but coin on him.

Great belt, I want one
# May 04 2001 at 12:05 PM Rating: Decent
Take a look around for caster belts with INT on them. How many are there in the game, total? A search on EQ Prices finds 7 items that can be sold (the rest are no drop) and this is the cheapest of the lot. This is a very appropriate item for the 20ish level caster, unable to go to Lower Guk to get a Cinch Cord (the next least expensive) or kill giants in NK or Velious, this is a very nice piece. I intend to attempt to get enough faction to do this quest, which will be difficult for a druid of Tunare, but it's easier than trying to get my chanter over there (can't port himself) on a regular basis.

# Apr 16 2001 at 11:19 PM Rating: Default
I spent almost 3 weeks in the warrens. I did this quest for this item about 30 times, and got 20 belts. Aka the bat lord drop the hat 2 out of 3 times and he spawns about evry 30 minuits. So this is not such a rair drop, and the price is way too high. However the part that makes this hard is you got to be at least indiff to the heritcs to do it, but lucky me I am a eud SK so I start higher then that:) How ever I just think people are trying to up the price of this nice, but not that nice item.

I just wanted to say that the current minimum level of 10, as of 3-22-2001, to do this quest doesn't sound right to me. This mob is at least level 23, so I would say the minimum level needs to be higher than level 10.
Oh, this is not a no drop or even a lore item. However, Azzar's Hat needed for the quest is a No Drop & Lore item.

RE: Minimum Level

Funny, I killed him yesterday with my level 30 SK. He conned blue, and did literally no damage, but I still got experience. He dropped the cap, which took a long time to turn in cause I couldn't find Azzar; he had wandered off and I was impatient. Sold to a monk for 30pp or so, seemed a fine price to me, since I didn't need the belt really. Might go get another and sell for more, or give to someone, hehe.
