well, since they weren't naming npc's after players, especially when they were so huge on not showing any signs of favoritism at the time, I'd have to say it was from the word "brae" , which is a hillside.
Same way they named the tumps , which is a mound, or a clump of trees.

Hill and mountain related words for hill and mountain giants.

They did that a lot back then.
