I have about 75 ribbons in varying quantities on my trader priced at 30pp. I have yet to sell one and they take up valuable shelf space. Also the cost of foraged items related to tailoring is insane. 70pp for Sylvan Berries for example. Fortunately Im a druid and combine hunting and foraging. The vendors will buy the ribbons for about 14pp. I'm thinking about cutting my losses and getting out of the Ribbon business.
Expensive but...

I skilled up with ribbons from 158 to 187.

You can save time and money if you use your head but it'll never be cheap or easy. I may be stating the obvious but get to 158 with wu's before you start skilling up on ribbons (but buy the foraged components whenever they are reasonably priced, if you are a forager, then forage them whenever it is reasonably convenient).

Assume you buy the foraged items in sufficient quantity for about 10PP each (sure you can get it cheaper but considering how much the rest of these combines are going to cost you, lets not quibble over the one part that you can't just buy from a vendor, it takes long enough to get enough of these together to have a worthwhile skillup session). The cost of gold ribbons are about 30PP. So for about 40PP a combine you can get yourself to 167. If you succeed on all your combines your net cost per combine is about 25PP per combine. Lets say it takes 40 combines to get the 9 skillups between 158 and 167. Thats 1K PP, not very daunting if you have already been through Wu's.

Now we kick it up a notch. The cost of platinum ribbons are 105PP, add the cost of the foraged item and you have 115 PP per combine and you can sell the result for 45 PP. Then net cost (assuming you always succeed, which isn't very likely) per combine is 70PP. Between 167 and 187 you need 20 skillups. In this range you get about 2 skillups per stack so you need 200 combines. You just dropped 14K PP. Does it hurt yet?

You can also save these ribbons for use in skilling up even further (good luck trying that), in which case you can add 600PP to the cost of getting to 167 and you can add about 10K to the cost of getting to 187. The recipes for the gold ribbons is 225 the platinum ones are only usable in a 250 triv recipe (once again good luck, the higher the triv of the recipe the lower the skillup rate). All recipes requiring ribbons also require a high end research compnent drop (as in the kind that you use to make 50+ spells. Most of these components are available for about 25PP. But they're still a Pain in the butt.

The foraged items require a high forage so you won't see a buncha newbies flooding the bazaar with these items but if you are patient you should be able to get youself to 187 in a reasonable amount of time (on Veeshan there are about 5 or 6 vendors who have developed a cottage industry in foraging these things).

Once you are at 187 there are no really cheap or easy ways to get any higher (not that ribbons were particularly cheap but at least it was easy).
