You can't sell these to merchants. No tribute for them either. Unless you have the necessary crafted components already made to fire these into something better stay away from them for skill ups. I thought since i had tons of tainted planar essence i would make these for skill ups. I figured i would at least be able to sell them back to merchants for something. If not then definitely tribute them for something. You can't either way. I woulda been much better off selling the tainted planar essences in the first place to a vendor.
Back in 2011 that may have been the case, but these days it's nothing to blow a couple kpp to get a couple score pottery skillups even at a total loss.

does this need to be fired to get the beging stealth manual?
Yes. It is fired with one of the above gems (peridot for stealth) to make a Planar (Peridot, etc) Encrusted Stein. It is this that you hand in, along with your traveler's manual, to receive the beginner stealth manual.
