This item is one of the best items in the game for clerics, wizards, druids, and magicians.
In the endgame only one thing is greater then +mana to the above classes, and that is FT. FT is key for clerics and wizards, druids usually get shafted and magicians need a giant mana base for their Mod Roding.
As a 60 Cleric that has killed some of the biggest mobs in the game I can attest that necros and hybrids would shun this item. Necros need large HP base so they can lich down and pump clerics and wizards.
Try doing the burrower beast in the deep sometime, I have used all my mana, and had to mod about 8 times in one fight (I was a CH rotation cleric). So an extra 125mana would be huge. negative 50 hps is nothing, if i were to pull agro from AoW or the Burrower Beast I would be losing 2,000 hps per attack round. This means I die in approximatly 2 rounds, 50 hps isnt gonna do a thing to help me.
Endgame mobs should NEVER hit your casters, no if and or buts about it.
But not all of us have been playing since the beginning of the game, I have been playing for seven months and have average armor, and am just reaching raid levels for better gear.
Level 52 Cavalier 1:00 Baking 1:30 Pottery class 2:00 Metal shop 2:30 Crafts 2:50 leave work early for drinks
Oh, and have a lvl 51 Beastlord (non-powerleveled)
and this drops from Zelnithak. Mid-to-upper guilds that come to Umbral Plains to kill stuff are there for Doomshade and Rumblecrush. Zelnithak is number three in the zone, but typically only killed "because he's there." The point being that I'd like this item on 63, but you don't have to be uber all-powerful to get this. Z also drops an FT2 item with no other stats for either melee, also. If you can stand not having that Sarnak Battle Shield, you'd probably love that for an upgrade too.
50 hp is nothing by the time you get this. With Druid buffs, cleric buffs,or even Shaman or Ranger buffs.. with any of those classes buffing you 50 hp is nothing. I'd love to have this item.. Aadyn Pryde Druid on Brell Lords of the Sky
50hp is nothing and yet it can be everything. As a druid i'm not blessed with that many HP. Sure initinally i could miss it cause the mana gain is quite significant, and being well covered in a raid ok. But solo? Too many occasions i've escaped with less than 50 hp. Personally i would rather setle for a grandmaster trophee +10 int/wis and +50 cha, wich is great for charming. But on some ocasions it could be a very usefull item.
HP is god. 50 hp is nothing? Say that to the necros with base hp over 2000 unbuffed. I myself have 600hp added from items with 50-75 hp added, and while its a nice item i just cant see a necro needing this item. We take way too many hits soloing and while liching at the same time, every little bit helps, ive fd'd with 2hp before, and you can be sure it was because i had my hp gear on.
Wiz, dru, cler, mage, enc. Those are the classes i can see using this item. Any other class with a mana conversion (necro shaman) doesnt really need this. Only classes that need a higher base full mana would be a nuker healer or mezzer.
It dosn't work anymore. You can't die due to neg health items. With noobs under level 10 popping back fully clothed, it would be an infinite death loop that would be impossible to get out of otherwise. Mod rods still kill them.
I think the debate on HP versus mana can be cleared up for those who do not play casters. The theory is, if you are getting hit, something went wrong. This item is targeted... No Drop, High End, pointed at those for whom HP are less of an issue in a typical fight. (Mobs hitting for 150-300 sometimes, doubling or more. 50 HP is not so big.)
I would not recommend this for the Hybred classes listed because they DO fight for their HP. Of course it all depends on the player's style and preference.
Absolutely right, Thayn. I'd make this trade (HP for Mana) in a heartbeat.
After fights, if by some chance I've gotten whacked on, I'll tell healers not to bother wasting their mana healing me. I'll just bandage myself to half (Bind Wounds = 100,) and get the rest back while I med back my mana.
I should only get hit if I've made a mistake (overnuked,) or as you say, something's gone seriously wrong. Sometimes, I'll overnuke on purpose... my partner's health is reaching the dreaded one bubble mark, and if I aggro the mob, the hope is we'll kill it before it wipes out my HP. So far, I've managed that fairly well. Perhaps if I had this item, I'd not pursue that strategy, as my margin for error would be too small.
Have to remember, by the time you get high enough in level, 50+, you already have a couple thousand hps so -50 would be a drop in the bucket. On the other hand, in a major firefight 50hps can be the difference that could make or break you and i would have to think hard before giving this to my Vah Bst. Still the other stats are nice....imho i would probably let someone like a Necro or SK have this.
You WOULD let a necro/sk have this item? Well thanks... but I don't want it. Health > * for a necro. Every single point makes a difference. The only thing I drop health for is regen or if I am fighting an AoE mob, resists.
Well, since it's "no drop," I don't think anyone's going to be giving it to us any time soon. :-)
Since Beastlords are what I'll call a semi-melee class, I'm not so sure I'd want one if I were a BL. There's a good chance I'd actually NEED those hit points.
As a wizard, I'd take it, no question. 125-plus mana can buy me a fairly decent hammer to drop on an offending mob, which will hopefully mean I'll burn it down before it gets to take advantage of those 50HP I'm missing.
50 HPs is a few, but my necro would love to have this. As already stated, necros use their life for mana anyway, and this is a MUCH better return on 50 life - 125 mana and 5 int. Gimmie the globe! you can have my 50 HPs heh
Okay I totally disagree with ppl saying 50hp's is nothing.... I'm a monk and I will always work hard on getting gear with maybe just 1 extra sta, ac or a few extra hp's, coz every little bit helps. You aint gonna get high hp's and AC if you have an attitude like 50hp's is nothing. For casters I agree, that thing is sweet to get and the 50hps would be a sacrifice I can understand a caster makes. But a melee? Not only does this range item have no ac, it has NEG hp's, so I say for a melee this is total crap. What will a tank do best? A little extra mana or that extra AC and HP's to tank better... I know what I'd pick.
dood...i think yer overreacting....i can't honestly see any tank even entertaining the thought to roll on this...i'd kick them in the shins for even suggesting it...
Funny...neither Monk or Warriors can use this... from a priest's (Druid) view, this would be great! I'm only level 40, but my HP Buff gives over 200HP....hmm...make that 150HP (with the -50) and give me 125Mana PLUS the mana I'd get from the 5 WIS...sounds good to me....any casters in a group should have some sort of HP buff on them anyway...or either the Cleric or Druid (I'm not sure if Shamans have +HP buffs, but I imagine they do) isn't doing their job....As a kiting druid, where I wouldn't need that 50HP (ie, if I actually get that low, I've totally screwed up or got unlucky with lag, and I'm going to die anyway)...the +125 Mana would be great as well!
So...if yer a caster and can take the HP hit...this is sweet...and for Priests who can fix it with a buff, this is better! Paladins have a lot of HP (lot more than Druids, I'll tell ya that), and Rangers don't usually MT unless they have to....SKs can Lifetap...and the extra mana will make that very easy...BeastLords...well, I dunno, I got bored before I got my pet....but this should probably help a lot with the mana since I imagine BSTs go for AC more than WIS...like a Hybrid would...
but these are just theories...so...it's about the way you play, and the confidence you have in your ability to survive with that kind of HP hit...
Finally...Monks can't use it anyway -=P (and yeah, I know your comment was on the fact that 50HPs is not a small loss...but the point stands...)
Shaman's do have HP buffs... starting with Talisman of T'Narg at 34 (134 hp buff, if I remember right)
Would be nice.... but no way in hell I'm givin' up my Howling Harpoon that's in the range slot now. (It'll come out of the range slot when I can use the proc).
125 mana and 5int for a range item is great who cares about a measly 50 hp. save for a necro casters shouldn't be worried about hp and if you have to worry bout it then your doing something wrong. as for AOEs thats what resist gear is for.
#REDACTED,
Posted:Feb 22 2002 at 12:13 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I second that....even as a melee, the -50hps is nothing...the 125 mana makes up for it, big time. Especially with the new Paladin regen which uses 150 mana (almost replaced by this item) for 1200 hps.
hrm. most of the time, I'd take the mana vs negative hp, but in some cases, such as ToV, etc, I'd keep my hps, since you can lose them pretty quickly as a caster, without having to agro (/rude AoE attacks)
Yes....this makes sense. I'd make the assertion that 50 hps has negligible effect on a priest, or necro for that matter, since they typically have a larger hp base than other true casters. A self-healer can replace his hps (lifetap in the case of a necro), while mages, wizards, and enchanters have no capacity to convert mana to hps, and can't afford to lose any of their low-to-begin-with hp base, when they could be wiped out by the mere first notice of a high level mob. A priest (druid maybe a bit less since they have fewer hps and generally lame AC) typically has the ability to survive at least one round of attacks, and can undo the damage to some extent...(necro can try to FD til someone can heal him). Shaman maybe could use a bit less than cleric only because they melee a bit more. Now....since necros and shamen rely on hp to mana conversion, some have made the argument that they shouldnt lose the hps. But do they ever get 125 mana for 50 hps? Don't think so, so they can make just as good use as a cleric of this item. So....best use for this item (just my opinion, dont flame my sorry ***** would be cleric>shaman>necro>druid>wizard>mage>enchanter. By the way.....for those who dont think Zelinthak can be brought down by 6 people, you're wrong. In a group of 7, by no means UBER.....we had him to 25% after 20 minutes, when he gated....If we had known he could do that, we would have brought an enchanter to sieve him, and maybe things would have been different. So if 7 pretty-well equipped good players could do it, I see no reason why 6 disgustingly well-equipped masterful players couldn't OWN this guy.
