Hidamari SketchFollow

The 3rd season is currently airing, just thought I'd inform people of this slice of life, based on 4 (later 6) girls going to an Art-focused high school.

The series has a few stereotypical characters, like the cute, naive, and sometimes shy Yuno. The energetic, sporty, and clueless Miyako. There are also the 2nd year students: serious Sae, caring Hiro.
Though they seem to follow usual character designs, I felt the voice acting and dialogue make them unique.

The series spends about half of the time at school, and the other half in their homes: Hidamari apartments.
Hidamari apartments have a history of attracting weird and quirky students.

The flow of the series is kind of odd at first, but you get used to it by the end of the first season (Each of which is 13 episodes).
One episode will explore Yuno and Miyako's first year, and the next might look at their second year.

Anyway, I'm finding it funny and cute. Miyako being my favorite character.

I say cancer becomes slice of life is somewhat of a recent development, or at least recently become popular, and it seems to be growing.

I don't really have that much of a problem with it, but I do have issues and I do not tend to enjoy most of the series directly.

1. Slice of life parodies tend to be funnier than the series themselves.
2. All slice of life character seem the same to me. They're all airheads. One might be an airhead who is supposed to be smart, another might be an airhead who is supposed to be good at sports, and still a third might be an airhead who enjoys video games, but they have generally the same personality and easy going demeanor.
3. Too much of the same. A lot of the jokes are all done deadpan style or with melodramatic reactions to mundane events. The series are pretty much always episodic in narrative. Each episode tends to be continuous in the mood, never reaching a peak or tension.
4. They live on humor, which is difficult for any series to do. Ouran and School Rumble are comedy shows, but they have drama, romance, and even a little action to give some meat between the delivery of jokes. It's very hard to be funny all the time. Slice of life lack anything, and instead seem to have a lot of pointless filler. The plot tend to not be very important or interesting, so in between the jokes you're basically just waiting.
