EQ Stories...Follow

I'm looking to put together a large compendium of amusing EQ stories. So here I am, asking you guys to share any funny, cool, exciting, sad, or bad stories. If I get enough, I may put together a web-site of all of them. I'll start with my own...back when I was a whee new player.

Back when I didn't know that much about the game (my first or second day), I decided that I wanted to explore new lands far from my secluded home in Greater Faydark. After heading to the PoK (I knew that much from my friend having the game), I headed over to Qeynos for a bit of grinding. However, this wasn't enough to satisfy my hunger for exploration. So making my way to the docks, I realized that since there were docks, there had to be a boat, right? Well, after awaiting for a few minutes and not seeing anything, I decided, "Ah, the hell with it," and jumped in the water. I began swimming out to the ocean, only to realize that the boat was moving right past me.

Trying to make haste in my return to the docks, by the time I got there, the boat had departed once again. Slightly unhappy with myself, I began to swim out again, thinking that I could at least raise my swimming skill. I obviously didn't realize how big of an ocean was ahead of me. Every so often I would turn around to see if the boat was there, and I did this for perhaps five minutes until I could no longer see the land. I still checked every so often, though.

So I'd been swimming for maybe ten minutes now, checking back every so often, when suddenly I stumbled upon land. Low and behold, I was back in Qeynos!! Angry and not knowing how I could have gotten turned around, it seemed Tunare was trying to add insult to injury as I watched the boat sail away once more.

So there I was, almost half an hour later and no further than where I had started. Needless to say I just waited at the docks for the boat to arrive after that. Mindless stupidity on my part, I suppose :)

So there's my story, lemme hear some of yours!

My first EQ character was a half-elf paladin out of Qeynos, circa early summer, 1999. He levelled slowly, since I was truly learning the game along with everyone else. But eventually, he moved outward, first to Blackburrow, then to Everfrost Peaks. He stayed there a while, finding the polar bears, some of the orcs, and the snow leopards to be right for his level.

One day, he saw another player who seemed to be fleeing wildly from a pursuing polar bear. Intending to help, he loosed an arrow at the bear, hoping to draw it off the other player. It worked. The fleeing player was, of course, Tundra Jack. The bear "chasing" him was Iceberg, and the corpse on the snow was my well-meaning but ignorant paladin.

Haha, NPC misconceptions happen to us all. Many times have I been wandering through a zone and I notice someone just sorta standing out in the open. My first inclination is to try to talk to them, hoping they'll have some sorta 'secret quest' or something. Often I ended up dead >_<

Good story!

Well, my story isn't really that spectacular, but perhaps a bit funny. (not at that moment though)

I was a low lvl paladin, only playing for a month or so and with very little knowledge of the game. I got in contact with a higher lvl, who found out that I've never been to the Bazaar (only newbie armour and even the weapon I was using was actually the first I got) and not even to PoK.

So he explained how to go to the Bazaar from Freeport, after ending up in the wrong tunnel and getting killed there, I finally arrive in PoK. The Nexus stone was easy enough to find and he told me to take a right after I arrive in Nexus, so I did. Unfortunately, I took a turn right straight on the Velious teleport, which activated as soon as I stepped on it. So I suddenly found myself in the middle of the Great Divide, low lvl (but unfortunately higher than 10) and immediately killed by an Frost Giant. Took the help of a friendly cleric to aid me out of there, lol.

Naturally, I returned there later to take my revenge on those giants! Abundant revenge even.

I also learned the hard way that aiding players who take out npc's belonging to the Freeport Militia faction at a low lvl is not the best thing to do, especially if I stay in the zone after I heal that player untill the moment that he killed the npc. Took my faction down so fast that I later passed the gate guards who just attacked and killed me on the spot. That taught me the meaning of faction, and the importance of it!

That's ok, you will end up being KOS in freeport sooner or later anyway, if you are a paladin and want to do your epic =).

Oh yes, lol, that already happened. That story was also from my early days, just got my first healing spell, wanted to show off I guess.

I already got the Soulfire, killed Sir Lucan and lowered my faction with the Freeport militia to the point that it cannot get any worse! (that fight was not that hard actually, only took me and two others, one cleric other player was a druid, we were all at lvl 50 or close though)

Ran my baby Froglock Pally, lvl 9 to Freeport to bank some skins and noticed a whole bunch of dead guards laying around. I ooc the zone a couple of times and no one claimed responsibility, to I started looting. I zoned into to next area and there was this warrior killing the guards. I was so impressed so just watched. He sent me a tell saying to hurry and loot. SURE! I looted the Testament of Truth, thanked him many times and parked it in the bank. A few minutes later the same guy sends me a tell explaining he "gave" me the Testament by mistake and it was intended for another pally frog. <shrug> It is no-drop, and my little pally has a big jump (pardon the pun) on the epic. I did the nice thing by logging in cleric for some fast heals for the warrior between getting Lady Shae drunk and Pandos stuffed full of muffins to keep from loosing all my hard won amiable faction in Freeport.

I have more stories, but right now I gotta go hammer the dents outta my armor. Vox is still picking Cherrin parts out of her teeth.

I'm sorry there aren't more stories here to read!

I will share another of my early ... er ... adventures.

I had worked my way down to Oasis of Marr, again with my first character, the half-elf paladin.

The world of Norrath was still new to him, and mysterious, and full of surprises and wonderful new things. I was seeing things every day that I hadn't seen, like pets. There were these guys running around with floating globs following them - magicians. And guys running around with skeletons apparently in pursuit - necromancers. Shields and swords were floating around - turned out they were enchanter "animations".

I had just zoned into Oasis and run south along the shore to what was, I had read, sort of the zone HQ, a fishing pier. When it came in sight, there were figures running around near the pier. And there was something else. "What the heck is that?" I wondered, running over to see what kind of new pet it was. That was my introduction to the specters of (and the long corpse recovery run to) Oasis of Marr.

I and my RL sister (67 Ranger) were on a road trip and stopped at a truck stop between outpost of civilizations on Interstate 20 way down in Texas. Of course we continued our discussion of the bows we were using, our accuracy, the arrows we were making. Grumbling about how difficult making steel shafts were if you didn't have the Mark of Karana. Then we moved our conversation along to hunting bears and wolves out in the Karanas seeking the high quality skins. Sis had gotten to the part where she was saying, "... and at about 125 feet, I figured I could get off at least 2 arrows before the bear charged, and I would proablly have to run for camp..." and our drinks came. Several voices from the next table asked, " so what happened next? did ya get the bear? and is hunting still legal there? who is your guide and can I book him for a trip out there." We looked over toward the next table and there must have been a dozen truck drivers hanging on every word of Sis' story. We were agahast... they thought we were talking about real world bow hunting. They joined the conversation and the entire restrant sorta joined in exachanging hunting tales. We never did explain we had been talking about an online game.

First time out, playing a Dark Elf Shadow Knight back in 99' on the Povar server. After I got several levels I decided to do some exploring in the Dark elf Forest Zone. Came upon a weird setup of Stones like Stone Henge. Around the stones where very short people with Hairy feet. At the time, I thought the zone was pretty safe, so I ventured near, and nearer, and nearer until suddenly Zap, I died. Spent the next 2 days trying to get close enough to get several of my corpses away from the circle of Halflings.. ;-)

Also, I am sure alot of us can relate to this one, spent weeks trying to get spider poison sacks (5 gold a piece, wow!!) to save up money to work on my blacksmithing skill. This was when all you could make was some types of armor. My friends thought I was nuts!! while they leveled, I spent all my time trying to get my skills up. I just did not understand how the system worked back then. lol

Wow, talk about feeling old...all these "Back in the Day" stories...Well, mine is too, I started out in 2000 with my 1st DE Warrior on Luclin. Being only in my 12th season, I decided to head over to WC to see what was up. After killing a few spiders, I headed over to Wisp hill. Much to my astonishment, I walked right into a GM event! Before my eyes I saw an army of the Undead marching in column westbound from the EC zone, and the only thing I could do was shout a warning to all. There must have been 30-40 undead Skellies, Zombies, Ghouls, Dry Bones, Ice Bones, Barbed Bones, you name it, if it was undead, it was in there. Shouts started shooting across the chat window as tanks charged and casters moved into position to support. It only lasted 5 mins, but WOW talk about a battle! After it was over, for the next 4 hours (real time) we had lookouts in every corner shouting all clear reports to everyone in the zone looking for the next wave that never came......

Sure would like to see some GM events again. Talk about FUN!
