Baking

You need to eat to live, and the baker is able to create his own food, both for personal consumption and to sell or give away to others.

What is the best way to develop and use the baking skill? Which recipes are the most and least useful? Which cities are the best places for Bakers to practice their trade?

Post your strategies on how to best develop and use the baking skill, and read, rate and coment on those posted by others.

I buy all my ingredients in East Commons and Thurgadin. Nice thing about Thurgadin is you can buy all the meat you want there (in the meat shoppe). I am told you can also get ingredients in WK, though I've not looked for them there. I have no idea about Grobb, Ogguk or Kunark, as to where one might purchase baking supplies.

Note: Traveller's Holiday in East Freeport sells cookpots and skewers. Cookie cutters and pie tins, however, I have not yet seen sold by a merchant (I commissioned them from a smith).

Good luck and have fun!

I'm not sure about the individual price, but I sell a stack of Fish Fillets (10 fish, successfully Baked with Sauces makes 20 Fillets) for just under 2pp. (with high cha)
It pays much better than plain fish. Figure 8cp-1.2sp per sjug of sauce, and you make a tidy little profit while gaining skill points.

I buy all my cooking condiments in East Commons. One of the inns (the second, I believe - never counted, I just know which one it is) has a hut to the right of it, and there is a gentleman who sells sauces, spices, flour, vinegar, frosting, garnish and just about anything else you need to bake. When I start running low on these items, I stock up when I'm in the area.

Also, in the very last huts before you hit the WC zone (from EC), there is an Erudite woman who sells unlimited batwings for a silver each. Combine a batwing and a fish to make fish rolls (good way to use up some of your fish)

It all depends on your charisma, and your faction with whatever merchant you are buying and selling with. It's never a lot, but it does add up, and you can show a minor profit, while learning the trade. That's more than you can say for most of the other skills.

This is one I've been thinking about lately...the other than fresh fish that you can catch. Thunder salmon, green-gilled salmon, rathe muskie, etc...

So far, all I've used these fish for is sushi (yay, raw fish). Hey, don't knock it. It's edible, and in times of need, raw fish is better than no food at all. LOL

As soon as I can get another pot (since my drood daughter decided she was going to make some rabbit stew and mistook a foraged pod of water for a flask of water and destroyed my pot - YES there is a difference), I'm going to see if I can make fish head soup with them (fish, jug of sauce and flask of water...and a pot - might be destroying another pot with the attempt, though).

RE: Brownie Parts?? - where to get them
# Mar 23 2001 at 7:02 PM Rating: Default
There's three ways to get brownie parts -

1) Higher a low level ranger to scout around the path to Butcher Block and pick off the occasional stray scouts that are in the area (they're level three or four at worst). This will generate maybe one or two parts an hour and a handful of low grade gems.

2) Wander that area yourself and hope you stumble across one - this generate maybe one brownie every few hours depending on how lucky you are you might find one and he might drop parts after you take him out.

3) Put together a 40th level party and hunt the tougher brownie scouts in Lesser Faydark. These brownies are all 40-50th level druids and are capable of killing a 10th level character in the time it takes you to read what just took you out.

My woodelf Ranger Sharpleaf kills any brownies she can get he hands on and always has atleast one brownie parts on her - give her a tell on Xev.

Downside of this is that you either have to be able to gate yourself all over creation, be pretty rich to pay for the gates, or be a twink. Running all over creation wouldn't be worth it.

You can get non-stop fish from the fish vendor in South Qeynos. Batwings are a little harder to come by, but if you have the money there are usually enough low-level people outside the gates of Qeynos that will sell wings to you. Seems like I once found someone, somewhere, that had an unlimited supply but I can't remember who...

Hi everyone, I have a little problem. At least I think I do. I'm at skill level 30, mostly doing batwing crunchies. I've also started doing fish fillets and did rat/wolf/bear meat sandwiches for a while. My problem is this...

Tonight I had two full stacks of fish and sauces. I did all forty of them and had around ten successes. That's not bad I guess, but the problem was that my baking skill, after all of that, didn't go up a single point! Awwgh!

Was there something I did wrong? I'm 12th level, I've maxed out the training points I can use on baking. What's up?

Thanks!

Buying Bat Wings

I have heard that making bat wing crunchies is THE fastest and most cost-efficient way to begin your baking skill.
I have also heard that there are merchants who sell batwings. My question is:
Does anyone know the location of these merchants?
Also, what stores sell frosting?

Any and all help would certainly be apreciated.
RE: Buying Bat Wings
# Mar 09 2001 at 6:53 PM Rating: Default
I've found merchants selling batwings in several places including EC Tunnel or Freeport. I can't pinpoint a merchant that would sell them exclusively. It's easier to hunt them in Freeport for instance. As for the Frosting, the only merchant I know that sells frosting is in Neriak next to the bank. He also sells spices and jugs of sauces.

The easy, fast way to get to 82 in Baking.
EAST COMMONS is the place. If you don't already own a spit, go buy one.
Inn #1 (East side) sells all of your baking supplies. Keep a couple empty backpacks while working, and prepare to have carpal tunnel.
Fill at least one pack full of Frosting.
Head to Inn #4 (West side). There, a little-known merchant sells unlimited Bat Wings. Load up, and start making Batwing Crunchies until skill level 46. You can go back and forth between the 2 inns, loading up on the one supply and getting the other at the other end, etc.

After 46, buy a LOT of Jugs of Sauces at Inn #1.
Head into East Freeport, to the Merchants at the Docks. There, buy unlimited Fish, and start making Fish Fillets. Fish Fillets will take you all the way to 82.

I went from 20-60 (my level cap, at 11) in about 2 hours using this method. No, it's not very "in-character" or much of a roleplaying experience. But it is nice to make the easier stuff for fun, now.
EZ-Bake Oven Addendum
# Mar 08 2001 at 10:41 PM Rating: Decent
Spits are available in East Freeport from Trader's Holiday. Also keep your eyes open at random merchants, especially Blacksmiths for your future needs in Baking: Skewers, Smoker, Tins, Rounds, Pots, etc. Players make them for smithing at times, and end up selling to merchants. I've tried and tried auctioning for these items, and have had more luck with NPCs.

Also, from skill 20-60 I took 10pp out of the bank. After I was finished, and sold my goods back to the merchants, I put 12pp back in the bank. I even had a couple stacks of food left for myself.
It's nice to find a tradeskill that doesn't put you in the red while you're learning it.

You can buy an unlimited supply of batwings in Erudin, One of the guilds (Enc perhaps?) Not sure forgot=) ...anyways.. Its a woman to the left of one of the guildmasters. You can buy frosting in Misty Thicket ( Far left hut). My skill is currently at 110 with fish rolls ( bat wings/fresh fish). Considering you can buy fresh fish anywhere this has been the easiest for me. I recently became kos to Erudin so Ive spent alot of time In paineel killing noclin raising faction. This is the best zone to get bat wings and snake eggs ( used for dough)

There's a store in Western Karana that sells frosting. Never had them run out on me yet, and I've really bought them out with my low-intelligence paladin trying to skill up. The store is almost due north as you leave the valley after zoning into WK from Qeynos Hills.

There's plenty of places in Qeynos that sell batwings, but unfortunately there's no limited supply, so you kind of have to run to each merchant to get a stack together. Then again, there are tons of people (it seems) in the newbie zone outside the Qeynos gate. Many of them are thrilled to get some hard cash for batwings...

I have a troll shaman (Pusbag) who is lowbie and is learning this skill slowly. I mostly roleplay him, so gaining levels is not an issue for me. I mostly hand out my baked goods to my friends and we make stupid comments about recipes and being homemakers while chowing down on beer and goodies. Dumb, I know. So my question is this: does eating different items give you any benefit other than keeping your stamina up? In other words, can you devour something and gain a stat increase for instance? I have never heard of anything like this, but then again I have always either bought my food or conjured it up when I needed it.

--Pusbag Infection

PS: I just realized how bad my title sounds when you read it fast. I'm sorry, *heheh*, that was unintentional.
RE: A question for you Master bakers:
# Feb 28 2001 at 11:27 AM Rating: Good
It turns out that when the game was first created, it was planned for different food items to give different stat boosts and the like.
This idea was scrapped due to balance issues (a relatively inexpensive trade skill that would give stat enhances would be very unbalancing).
As it is now, ALL food items are the same and they all last equally as long. That said, there is absolutely no reason for people to buy iron rations, when 6cp muffins will last you equally as long.
The only advantages to being a baker are the ability to make gnome kabobs for your troll and ogre buddies and the fact that created food weighs .1 units, which is important for monks and weak elves.

Huh.
I've been playing this game for about two years now and now just learned that all foods are consumed at the same rate!

This just goes to show that you learn something new every day.

I suppose I just assumed that because it has the word "iron" in its' title that it lasted much longer than all those other food stuffs that are for sale. Wow. I feel like a dummy!

I wonder how much money I have wasted over all this time?

Fancy meeting you here, Pusbag. I'm a master baker, and have made tons of different items and have yet to find anything that increases any stats. I took up the trade when I found out that I could take one mammoth meat and make 5 steaks....five food items for about 3 silver was cost effective (always the accountant).

Advantages of baking? No more throwing away/destroying meat (except in Velious, meat for which I've yet to bother finding a way to process...that one is coming up soon). Variety of foods (which don't really make a difference, and honestly don't last as long as the iron rations we can purchase). Alright, those are all cop-outs lol Most of all for the sheer enjoyment of the thing, and it is something to do, along with fletching (yes, a fletching shaman) during downtime.

/em laughs hysterically at Pusbag's subject line.

Yo, Badjur!

I just started taking up a trade skill recently in baking. It makes for some levity during the downtime between fights. The "Suzie Homemaker" thing is pretty funny with five or six trolls sitting around talking about food preparation.

Is your arrow production cost effective or do you do it just for the satisfaction of making something that you normally wouldn't be involved in? Just curious...

Lemme know what you end up making with those Velious steaks, ok?

Yes, arrow production is now cost effective, considering my arrows have a better range than the ones purchased from merchants. Also, I can pack 2 stacks of each of the four components required to manufacture them and in the long run make far more than 8 stacks of arrows, also making it more space efficient in my inventory. My partner is a pally and when he runs out of arrows it only takes me a couple minutes to whip up a couple of stacks (also making it more time efficient since he doesn't have to go find a merchant to buy from or hustle a mage to summon). (okay, I am the chuck wagon of our little operation. I stock up the food, drink, arrows, bloodstones and any other items needed for our team on a given hunt. Always the good girlscout I am LOL)

I will be heading back to Velious over the weekend for a raid on Skyshrine and plan on picking up some of the Velious meat to experiment with. Surely there has to be a use for it (yes, I know the snow bunny meat is used for a quest). There is a use for every drop in this game, no matter how stupid it appears to be. Will let you know if I find any workable combinations.

Yes, and in Rivervale there is a named brownie that drops them almost every time. I pick them up in Gfay sometimes from the outcasts too.

Brownie Parts are hard to come by, but everyway that has been mentioned is all that I know of. I will say it took me over 90 brownie parts to get my baking skill from 145 to 150. Thats with an Intell of 120 and Wisdom of 165. I am hoping that when they develop new receipes it will be easier than what is available now. The only way to raise your skill from 145 to 150 is making brownie made items (aside from winter chocolate)

Is there a merchant that sells brownie parts by any chance? And if so, where are they located?

Greetings all.

Is there a location where an evil race can get hold of spit? I have found all the other trade skill items I need in the Feerott (ie large sowing kit, fletching kit and tackle box) but so far I have not found a safe place for a troll SK to get such a thing as a spit. I would appreciate any advice or ideas.

Thanks

Kugak.

That's a skewer you're thinking of - smiths can make them and smokers - can't make spits.

I got one for my Troll SK by simply going into one of the Freeport zones, doing a /WHO and then sending a tell to a newby with the bribe of earning a plat or two.

Welp, I just replied to another fellow asking about this lower in the threads...

If you have the Velious expansion, you should be able to buy a spit from the Coldain dwarves in the bank room (with Mort&Gage, the bankers... ;P). Regardless of race OR class, the Coldain will be non-KOS at the beginning.

If you chose to follow your brethren in the ways of Rallos Zek, and went on a Coldain killing spree to gain the frost and storm giants favor, I would imagine Verant would have set up equivalent merchants in Kael Drakkal... I can't confirm this supposition myself, as I never have liked giants, and sided with the little guys from the start.
