Cross-factioning hybrids!

Big news here regarding the future balance of the game, with the expansion:

"As we draw closer to the release of World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, more of the secrets shrouding the draenei and blood elves are being revealed. In the upcoming expansion, you will finally be able to play classes that were previously unavailable to your faction. The blood elves have harnessed the power of the Light for their own needs, and the Horde recognizes the value of these renegade blood elf paladins. Meanwhile, the draenei have been granted the wisdom and strength of the elements, and a number of draenei now follow the path of the shaman." -Frost

And before you let loose with your OMGWTFBBQ, consider this quote from Eyonix:

"Something we have always held to as a core design philosophy is developing classes which are distinct from each other. This means developing a class with it's own abilities that clearly separate it from other classes in terms of how the class plays and operates, both for the player and from a design stand-point.

Early on in the inception of this game, it was a hot debate as to whether factions should have a specific class, which they alone have access to. Some wanted all classes to be distinct from each other, but accessible by all. Others thought that more flavor could be generated by keeping a class unique to a faction. Obviously, if you have one side with a unique class, you should probably give the other faction a unique class as well. Thus, Shaman and Paladins became those unique classes.

However, by linking them in a relationship as unique counter-points, options are closed for our main design goal, which is to keep classes distinct. We want factions to be balanced, but don't want to cut and paste abilities from one to the other and homogenize the classes. If we went that road, there would be little difference or need for a distinct class. We want classes to be different in more than just name-only or superficial appearances.

So, in our desire to keep the classes distinct and open up new possibilities for development of each class, shaman and paladins shall now be a playable class for both factions. This decision comes at a time when we have an opportunity to blend this decision into future development. Namely, with the new races in the upcoming expansion. Prior to the new races, the Paladin and Shaman lent themselves easily to their own factions and not that well to the opposite faction (Tauren Paladin? Gnome Shaman?) With the advent of the two additional races, the choice was made more clear in game design and lore.

In terms of game design, one of the options it opens up is for specific classes in dungeon encounters. We already have several encounters that highlight the abilities of a single class or make use of a classes specific abilities. Shaman and Paladins in the previous design could not participate in such encounters. If killing a creature required a Shaman, the Alliance could never beat the encounter and vice versa. This change allows the two classes to bring their own abilities into a situation which may highlight their class as an integral part of the encounter. "

So it seems as if Blizzard is doing this to protect balance in the most obvious sense, and allow for greater flexibility in other domains of the game. It's a sad loss to see some of the uniqueness of the two factions fall by the wayside, but it might really be for the best, overall.

Problem Solved

Hmm. If you were so upset with getting pwned by a shammy in BG, why not go create a shammy on another server? Same applies to Paladins, what no raid buffs? Find a server and create a Paladin. Problem solved.

Worst pile of BS ive ever heard

: Tauren paladin ? Gnome Shaman ?

What about this : Undead Shaman ? Gnome paladin ? pretty much counter that example u gave us, and for the paste-ability thingy ... isnt that exactly what they r doing with this pally/shammy thing ?
Blizzard is neutralizing any unique thing in this game and i think it sux bigtime, not that i dont wanna have paladins on the hordeside (im a shaman) and not that i dont wanna pvp against a ally shammy, but bcuz theres no chance of being unique and using unique skills against the opposite faction.
I really dont hope Blizz is doing bcuz they get their ears blown out by crying younglings who send them 10 mails a day about how a paladin just bubbled up and killed them or bcuz they just got their **** handed to them by a frostschocking shammy, i might be a afraid that could be one of the reasons :S
Another example is the hunters pets, having a owl or and polarbear fighting at ur side, who cares, u cant tell the difference anymore, i had this awesome rare wolf (forgot name) who was dealing out shadowdmg, that made me feel like a lucky ******* when i tamed him, a few week later Blizz nerfs all pets "pasting" all abilities ( to use ur own word)

Why do we have to be so alike why does anything have to be "equalized", we r enemies, raging war against eachother.
Stop "pasting" our skills/classes, make us unique, that is where the fun is found !

Draenei have always been a shamanistic tribe.

Blood Elves are descended from High Elves, who were able to become Paladins in limited numbers.

I see no problem with this.

cop out. plain and simple. less work for them. less true feeling in the game. horde and allinance may as well just ally and take on all the other baddies. the 2 sides will be the same. ******** about shammie/pallies was half the fun. coming up with stategies using both classes was cool and challenging.. and that will be gon as well. Lazy design...

You miserable pack of whinging buggers.

Who gives a **** honestly? Wake up. For those of you who PVP maybe you ***** because now you are you to have to face a new class and you thought you were special being a pally or a shaman. My god get over it.

As for the lore, Blizzard did a fine job but again who gives a rats left nut? They could have done much worse!

Think of the benefits for PVE!! .. wow shammie totems, nice! Coupled with pallies buffs.. awesome! Its going to bring alot more variety into game play and make it much more interesting (and fun!).

I have to note i may be biased as i dont PVP, if i wanna kill people ill play Halo. PVE is where the fun is for me.. raiding dungeons and killing big scary ****.. not to mention the loot. You cant tell me it isn't fun (well if you can, then you shouldnt be playing should you?).
Why not Horde Paladins?

What's wrong with an "evil" Paladin? I play a dark pally on a roleplay server. Priests are pretty holy and righteous themselves, and Horde can play them. So why all the fuss?
what the hell is wrong with you people?!

anybody whining about this:
JUST STAY THE **** AWAY FROM THE GAME IF YOU HATE EVERYTHING HAPPENING WITH IT THAT MUCH!
seriously, if you realy don't like the changes that blizzard makes just go play everquest or any other mmorpg. we all know that the people whining the hardest about this are the ones that are gonna make the aliance->shaman and horde->palladin chars as soon as the expansion comes out and probably love it. they just want to "be part of the group" so they whine about every little thing they can think of. besides, since it's still a while to go before the expansion comes out, who knows? maybe blizzard will add new faction unique classes? all i'm trying to say is, just take it as it comes and don't go completely crazy about something that's not even out yet and as such you can't yet pass judgement upon.
The small number
# Jul 27 2006 at 11:01 AM Rating: Default
Most people seem to forget that people who care for the lore are a small number. It would be fine if it was only a couple 1000 people wanting to play the game the way the lore leads it to be, but that is simply not the case. I am not thrilled about the classes switching sides, but I am not terribly opposed to it. Faction balancing is a crucial point. And so what if they had "fixed" the races that are already there, it still wouldn't have balanced the sides. I know. everyone on the horde side wants there own club and I even enjoyed not having to deal with nearly as many "naked dance parties" like in Ironforge, but I did hate having trouble getting into end level instances. On the alliance side it would take me about two minutes most times and I have a group. Just remember MILLIONS of people play this game. They can't go door to door and ask every person, "What would you like in the game?" And even if they did, they couldn't use all the ideas. Cause one person would want to have undead pallys.
damnit ppl....

yall with ur 1 paragraph responces, i dont see the point in it.....we all have diff opinions which are only gonna rly be read by us...blizz wont see it, and all we say to it is WHINER STFU BEFORE I POP YOU!

horde pallies? now u can bubble hearth too

Creativity vs. Fairness?

I don't know guys, although I really love how each faction has it's own awesome individuality, I must say that this step toward equalization is a good thing, but of course that's just my opinion. But then again, I also think that before they come up with a bunch of new races, they should try the fix the current ones first -_-

Y'know I like the horde. Hordies are cool. I've got nothing on them. But then why do I have all alliance chars? Eh? Because it just seems more advantageous for someone to have an alliance char vs. a horde char. There are more recipes available to the alliance, there are more trainers available to the alliance, and dude, nightelves can do flips. And kungfu-looking moves. And hey, why is Undercity so freaking creepy?? I tried playing undead, I tried! I think maybe blizzard went a little overboard with the design T_T

'Nuff!! The point is, I think that maybe Blizzard is rather distraught over how Alliance players basically outnumber Horde players by a lot and they're pinning the fault on the imbalance between the factions' races. I mean, "yes that's true" but it's not that HUGE of a deal.
Classes
# Jul 26 2006 at 8:41 PM Rating: Default
If you ask me, i think blizz shouldn't call Horde pallys "Paladins" at all but maybe "Death Knights" for the more "darkness" behind Arthas from WC3. Change abilities just slightly so instead of "Holy" this, "Holy" that..it'll be "Grace of Darkness" for the healing spells. "Horde Paladins" is like an oxy moron to me. Horde should get "Death Knights" and Alliance should get "Prophet" or "Oracle"..take your pick. Just make slight ability changes when the "port" of the classes happen and bingo...you got a new class to play that's similar to the other factions class. Problem solved and i don't get paid by Blizz. *cries*
Q.Y.B.

Is this the "cheap" way out ? You bet!

Does this help both sides? Yes

Alliance get Shammy a vary powerful class both PvP and PvE

Hord get Pallys a vary powerful Tank/Healing/Support Class...

I dont have any experinace with a Shammy other then murdering them in Battle Grounds... So all you little Hordies may wanna listen becuse Oh yeah your gonna get killed by Shammys ALOT once thay get up there in levels of the BG's... Cry me a river.. Shammys are about the only class I back away from in the BG's

Pallys are vary vary Powerful in PvE becuse thay are a well rounded class, Thay can Tank, step back and Heal with the Priest and throw some really nice Buff that the Hord dosen't have any access to ATM...

As for Lore, Thats a joke, If Lore/role playeing matter thay would put a filter in to prevent "l33t sp34k" or prevent names like "Omgimacow", "Phatlewt" or "Tankerboi" and make people think of real NAMES. Lore really only ever used by people that role play... Thay losely link in to Quests.. but as a hole Quests in WoW are fairly genaric... and vary dont really refrance much Warcraft Lore more then local are events...
Shammies obselete?
# Jul 26 2006 at 6:52 PM Rating: Default
Shammies of the horde should be sad that pallies are infinitely better in raids than them. All shammies have that is special is windfury totem...but other than that, a pally can do whatever a shaman can PVE-wise and do it better.
a thought...

Everyone who is complaining about the lore really has to calm down. WoW is a living breathing game that is bound to have changes. Therefore, unlike real life classic mythology, which is stagnant and unchanging, the WoW lore is open to change. So get over it already! You may not like the idea of the changes, but that is very different from saying that blizzard "messed" it up. Do not get me wrong though, i am NOT in support of the BE pallie or Draenei shaman. Though it may have been aggravating from a development standpoint to create end game instances, this is no excuse. The time and effort blizzard puts into making WoW is what seperates it from other online gaming experiences. They take on difficult challenges in their development, and we in turn take them up in our gameplay. This is just a copout on their part. Though they would have had complaints for not balancing the pallie or shaman correctly from someone, at least they were TRYING. Additionally, the seperate classes for each faction enriched the game. It gave each side a champion all their own, a class devoted solely to protecting the horde or the alliance. now, things will be all washed out. I will reserve my final judgement for release of the expansion, obviously, but i cannot help but look at my level 60 shaman and wonder if they will be viable beyond their mana totems. *sigh*

Ok seriously to all you guys getting all pissy about how this game is going down the toilet and we should stick to lore well if that's seriously an improtant part of your gameplay you should have stuck with war 3 since you would have had to no they would have had to add thing and change things to make sure the game stays fresh. I'm all for the new horde pallies and alli shams. If it really makes you that made go ahead and play another mmorpg i'm sure you'll soon realize how spoiled you are with WoW. Nothing compares to it at least atm. Just go out there and play the game to have fun. I'm sure tons of people complained about not having shamans or pallies for their side blizz can not accomidate everyone.

And to neosurferdude ***** you pandas would have been an awsome alli class.

Is there anyone who works at Blizz that was even around for WC1?

I'd say Lothar is rolling in his grave, but he already did a complete 360 when the "demon paladins from space" race was added.
This is the stupidest shit I've ever read...

when it comes to gaming.

By god, you destroy the entire storyline buy making attempts to make it accessible to everyone. What you're not thinking about, in your attempts to satisfy gamers, is the storyline. You guys need to be thinking in this world...not necessarily out of the box to integrate faction-side classes.

Blood elf paladin? Did I miss that in the history somewhere? Did blood elves even come across as a race that WOULD have paladins? No, they weren't described that way, they have not acted that way, and I doubt that would have changed...this is dumb, and as a human paladin, it's a travesty to being a paladin.

Blizzard, I know you aren't listening, because you already believe you're doing what's right and you probably wouldn't admit it if you came to the conclusion that you weren't, but for god's sake...think a little less.
Just game on....

I feel that if people had any faith in the game with the two classes being unique, you should be curious to the least as to what the new expansion will bring. I personally am anticpating the new expansion and have high hopes that the decision Blizzard made was really for the better for the future of the game. Can't forget that its a game and the only thing there is to do....is ENJOY it!...Game on ...

They have creative designers who simply gave up.
