Launch Time: Progression Servers

Here is some information about the Progression Server from SOE, as seen on EQLive:

Progression Server Timeline Sample

Sony Online Entertainment is giving EverQuest players both new and old a chance to experience the game as it was in the very beginning by launching "The Combine" & "The Sleeper". The Progression servers will be made up of the original EverQuest zones in Antonica, Faydwer and Odus that were available at launch back in 1999. Players will work together to level and conquer key content that will in return unlock every expansion released for EverQuest since 1999.

SERVERS:

"The Combine" & "The Sleeper"

SERVER FEATURES:

  • 2 normal, non-pvp servers (no transfer servers) titled "The Combine" & "The Sleeper" in-game
  • Each expansion will be unlocked by the progress of the players and the content they complete
  • New servers for past players to return to and re-experience a world where talented and skilled players reign supreme
  • New players can experience all of EverQuest's original content without having to catch up on years of expansions
  • Relive the evolution of one of the most successful MMORPGs in history
  • SERVERS LAUNCH:

    Wednesday, June 28, 2006

With the opening of the Progression servers on Wednesday, June 28, 2006, there will be a progression timeline available for everyone to see. The timeline will show each server's current position in the progression. When this page is accessed, it will scroll sideways to show you the current progress and stops when the current expansion is centered on the page. The timeline will display "nodes" of requirements players have to "unlock" to progress. The number of unlocks for each expansion will be displayed, but not name what the requirement is until after it has been completed. Once completed, an unlock will show the title of the requirement, the time and date, and a link to a list of the people in the raid, group, or single person who completed the requirement.

Here is a sample of what the timeline will look like:

    Progression Server Sample
Also included with the regular character tracking on EQPlayers, for the Progression servers there will be:

Progression Server Conquests - A separate page for server "Conquests" so players can see what mobs have been killed already and by whom, linked to those users'character profiles.

Progression Server Characters - "Conquests" on the pages of players who were the first to kill specific mobs that are or aren't necessarily part of the unlock requirements.

Make sure you check these all out on Wednesday. You will be able to access the timeline by going to the front page of EQPlayers and clicking on the banner that will be there on Wednesday afternoon.

(Similar server and character conquest tracking should be available for all servers in the next few months.)

fear is gonna be nasty lol. naggy too. with your +fire enchanter gear lol. cant wait for the "uber" people of today to find out how hard real eq was in 99-00. it was months and months before anyone did it the first time. yes there are strat guides now to make it easier but still gonna be real tough.

Seems to me that if folks just blow through the new servers then soon there won't be any difference between them and the others?Just my opinion.

wow serady was completely right about soe hehe, making a simple "classics" server would be acknowledging that when sony bought verant out they ruined the way the game was played. (its still a good game imho, just a different one) and while i wouldnt go so far as to quit wen pop or even luclin came out, thats about the time to return to old server =\.

had to post, loved the pre-soe eq with a passion =)

All I know is that with the last 3 or 4 expansions I have become very confused. . .shrouds, progression, new armor quests, etc. I am looking forward to playing a simpler game and hopefully growing with it. I really don't know what to expect. I'm just going to play my toon and hopefully enjoy it. Keep an open mind people. . . try it if you want (lots are) or ignore it.Don't condemn it without a fair trial period.

    What a joke...

Betcha they don't fix half the stuff that's currently broken in the game as it is right now (boats, anyone?). I'm guessing it'll take at most two weeks for some bot/hack squad to get to 50, and two months before these servers are more barren than Zek, because the "old EQ" that people whine constantly about will never be there again.

I've tried hard to catch up, keep up, and catch up again.. time and again. Personally the progressive servers hold little appeal to me. A: I can't have the main I am and want to be. B: I worked to hard on being the main I am to turn my back now when I AM where I've been fighting to get and start over. Though the nestalgia of it warrents visitation, I personally cannot simply stop playing the characters I've had for so long. As a friend said to me, "I didn't pay for all the expansions to have them locked away for the next who knows how long.." I personally agree that the progressive servers shouldn't be rushed. If you want PoP, Frogloks, ect.. play on the server you do now. There's plenty of servers with everything unlocked. Why ruin the only two progressives by blowing through them in 6 months? Once they are unlocked that's that.. it's done. It's just like any other server. Personally, I'll be visiting for the nostalgia of it.. but my home is my tree in PoK and my main is my main for a reason. I may make a new alt.. but no way I'm making a new main starting from where I was 7 years ago.

...if this isn't a very convenient way for Sony to attempt to "fix" all the thousands of broken quests, bugs, glitches, et.al., while the customer base, who is naturally paying for it, runs beta tests on two new servers for them.

Oh! And Sony has added an incentive for players to pay for EQPlayers so they can see how far they've progressed! For those who haven't been around a long while, that news used to be spread in-game and on the various server and guild message boards. /mourn all those lost message boards.

Naturally, there will be those who will, as they did the first time around, use hacks, macros and cheats to reach higher end content, and they will brag about how "uber" they are. Just as naturally there will be the honest players who will forge ahead and conquer the content with good players and smart play.

Rest assured all, the Combine & and the Sleeper will be much as we remember the game to have been 99-01 and beyond; some smart players, some griefers, some KS'ers, some ninja looters, some cheats, some scam artists, a lot of quests, many of which will be broken and unable to be completed, some very nice and helpful players, some not so very nice and helpful players.

My point? It will not be the "old days". It will merely be two new servers will less available content than the current servers with the added bonus being that one can use Allakhazam and any number of other sites to get the strats, if needed, to beat any encounter and a few new bells and whistles in-game and at EQPlayers. So play as you want to and enjoy when you can.

I think most have forgotten that this is just a game. A very enjoyable game, granted, but in the end it's entertainment. I won't whine if the game isn't set up so that it suits my style exclusively, rather I'm thankful that it's the way it is; with a little something for us all to enjoy, or have a good grumble at and accept as okay. The reason I'm thankful is because with the diversity in the game allowing for differing game styles and playability it means that there is something for you all to enjoy too, and I admit, I love playing the game with everyone.

Just remember that if someone rushes through, there's no reason to be upset if you want to take it slower. You should take it slower because the rest of us need your company. For those who want to get to the end I'm sorry to see you go but, hey, we enjoyed your company while you were here.

So lighten everyone and enjoy the game...see you in the newb zones 8D

Hehe..I don't know why some people are so concerned by the way others play...regardless of what the game content is, they will play the way they always have: fast and furiuous! So, LET THEM play that way, and you play nice and slow as you like. I've been playing since almost the very beginning and I'm here to tell you that there were people who were ALWAYS in a hurry to get to the top, even back then. So, just play how you want...if you want to rush to unlock stuff as fast as humanly possible to impress your buds, then feel free....if you don't want to rush, then feel free to do that as well. However, it would be kinda nice to see things as they were even if it's just for a little while before things are unlocked. People can't help the tug of a challenge like they did a few years ago...in any case...have fun and see you there! :-)

Why is it that someone interested in the "way things used to be" can't play that way on any of the servers? Couldn't one simply refuse to twink? Run around in patchwork armor swinging bronze weapons dreaming of the day you can get a PGT to drop just like we used to?

I was so happy the first time I swung my Mino Axe (snifs) I need a tissue...

    # Jun 28 2006 at 11:33 AM Rating: Default
Because if you have all patchwork and bronze weapons and go LFG, people will laugh at you and you won't get a group, and if you can't solo you're screwed. That's the way it is nowdays, it's quite depressing. Also many of the old world mobs have been upgraded and made stronger, not just that but their pasthing has improved as well as their AI for casting in several patches.

Basicly, playing it old skool in today's EQ against the old skool mobs of today's EQ will put you at an ever larger disatvantage. For one I know that sarna berserkers, in the OT, used to have aprox 600 hp give or take depending on level, now their default is 850 give or take some on level. Small things like that is what makes not getting better gear at lower levels a bad move, reguadless of how much we wish it wasn't so.

Hope that clears things up a little =/

    # Jun 28 2006 at 2:12 PM Rating: Decent
People who laugh at me based on my equiptment are not people I am wanting to group with anyway. They are often enough the same people who have been given uber gear, p-leveld to 65 by their guild buddies and have no idea how to group, raid, play their class etc. We've all run into this type far too often.

A disadvantage as an individual makes grouping even more important as well and the game in the old days was more challenging at the lower levels for the very reasons you mention.

My real point however, that I may have failed to make clear was that these servers are not neccesary for those who wish to relive "the old days". Simply create a helf ranger, start in Surefall, hack and slash bears, spiders, gnolls, lions, aviaks and etc. while never visiting the bazaar or joining an uber guild to help you and you get a pretty good taste of what it used to be. I expect this will be true enough on the new servers as well, regardless how fast the inevitable group of uber guilds pushes things along. And I do agree that everyone is free to play as they want. Thats the point of a game is it not?

But thanks for clearing things up for me. I'll sleep so much better now =/

part of the charm though, was being grouped with others that were the same... instead of a lvl 5 war with 7k hps unbuffed ( exaggerration, i know, but im makin a point =P) soloing in OT, you would have a full group workin hard to kill the mobs there. its still a GROUPING game, and more power to yah if you don't twink, but others in yur group will b twinked, runnin around murdering everything without needing your help... on a sep. note, i think the game will never be the way it WAS, as in the begining, no 1 knew wtf they were doing, all the quests were new and exciting, mobs werent perma-camped, and expansions came once every 2 years and were packed with content... losing verant made this a different game entirely (not altogether BAD), just not as magically new and exciting as the original...jus my 2 cents =)
    I can't wait...

I think these severs will be cool, but like some have alrdy said I really hope people don't rush it. I have played EQ for a while, but not before PoP and i think it is cool that i can see wat it was like before PoP and all. I just hope all the people that are going to rush to get to lvl 60, 65, and once they get everything un-locked, lvl 70. Have fun if you are going o9n this sever like i am, and happy hunting!

I've been playing EQ for 1 1/2 years. I really enjoy it, but feel I've missed out on so much. I still don't know how to enjoy several of the things that the original players now take for granted. I'm looking forward to enjoying an unfolding story line, catching up on what happened, when, and learning the game from the beginning. Should make EQ so much more satisfying. Please, you twinkers, don't mess it up for the ones who really want to take advantage of seeing the game unfold the way you were able to. "A good time was had by ALL". See you there.

So you are saying dont play the way we like to play because you think you are the only one who should enjoy this server?
    RE: Progression Server
    # Jun 28 2006 at 3:14 PM Rating: Good
Exactly Lady Aeryiel, with all the twinked players on all the other servers they have successfully ruined the in game experience for those who don't wish to play that way.

    TWINKERS LEAVE THESE ZONES ALONE.

If you want to twink and play like that then stay on the servers you are on, obviously playing the game it was initially intended to be played isn't any concerns of the twinkers.

Their only goal is to become BTIG (Biggest Toon In Game), and in doing that they destroy the spirit of the game as it was meant to be.

I am for one looking forward to getting all those lore no drop items that no twinker has ever heard of before such as "The Testament of Vanear".

Those who don't like the twinks should make every effort to point them out and not group with them or their guilds. Those of us who have been playing since day one of this game, we should take the time out to encourage and assist those newer players in the olden quests of Norrath.

When was the last time you hugged Cuburt?

No, they're saying you've twinked across the other 20 servers.. can't you leave two for enjoying the journey and not just being at the destination.

Perhaps those who would have the progression servers be regular servers as soon as possible could use the combine and those wishing a slower journey the sleeper.. /shrug.. just a thought

I am looking forward to the progression as well. Although like seradwym mentioned i sure hope people will not corrupt it and try to open the expansions too fast. I too also wanted a "
classic" server that allowed players to actually be challenged at all levels and not be so twinked out and wipe through everything to lev 60. We can only hope that whatever these conquests sony has put in are truly hard enough to keep it locked for some time. I think if they get to POP too fast i too will be done w/ EQ...

    .....
    # Jun 28 2006 at 6:24 AM Rating: Default
I think this is just going to be a big mess. Almost everyone that wanted the new server wanted a classic server with just the original game and Kunark and Velious. Everyone else wanted a classic PvP server. I don't even know where the idea for a progression server came from. Now all the people that wanted a classic and all those that wanted a pvp and the few that wanted the progression are going to be all mixed together making eachother crazy. Well I'm pretty sure the progression people that just want to unlock everything in 5 minutes will ruin the server for those of us that wanted to just take it easy and enjoy the old game so that'll be it and we'll be forced to either go back to the cutthroat real servers or just give up on EQ altogether. The problem is people have been screaming at Sony to make a classic server for ages but they just can't do that because that would mean they would have to acknowledge the fact that most people hated every expansion after Luclin. Anyway this will be my last attempt to stay with EQ. Once PoP gets unlocked I'll be finished.

I'm eager to find out more about abilities that were available in Original EQ that aren't available today, such as the bard's ability to AE kite by running in a tight circle around a group of mobs, just outside of their melee range, but still close enough for the PB AE dots to hit them.

Similarly with the tradeskills. Does blacksmithing go back to the way it was originally where banded armor maxed out at around 188 and alchemy potions had to be combined in a medicine bag to make multiple dose potions instead of the current stacking setup?
    Interesting
    # Jun 27 2006 at 8:48 PM Rating: Decent
These new server are very interesting because Everquest was created with a great background storyline. I hope that EQ players across servers can follow the unfolding storyline as progress is made. I can't wait to hear: ' This great guild has has made it through plane of sky or fear ' which are actually very tough zones for level 50's with no AAs... Good luck to All.
