A productive patch?
# Oct 30 2005 at 10:16 AM Rating: Decent
Xp in mm seems untouched, though several missions were changed -the BB pirate one in a way that annoyed a guild that was exploiting it on my server as they could no longer have 4 afk in guild hall and succeed 100% of the time.

The new UI does not bother me after a day of getting used to it. I may even prefer the hotbars. However, My formerly functioning autoforage-when-turning-left-then-autoinventory key no longer works. It still autoinventories but will not trigger forage. Seems odd to me.

People seem happy with the helm toggle. Much being said about the halloween quest being a scavenger hunt.

They should consider unleashing some of the past events on a permanent basis is some zones. But not radically up the level of zones people need (i.e. the botched Castle Mistmoore revamp). Most of the under 50 zones are dead empty 98% of the time. How hard would it be to make a halfling in misty thicket that sends you to the old plane of mischief? Why not?

Put a version of the jboots in the old dungeons but make them all class specific no trade. Revise the loot tables of all the mobs that were made fabled to give something in between the fabled and regular version. ALl that event did was prove how out of date the loots were... people were certainly keen to go get the fabled. THe casual player was out of luck those since guilds camped all the good ones. Permanent inclusion of the better loots would not ruin the game. Reward the people still holding the fabled by upgrading it ala the festive doll.

Little things like that would make many happy.

I have been playing for about a year now and I have seen things come and go. The only thing I see that I dont like is that everyone wants to make a GOD before the egg hatches. Instead of complaining about something maybe you should try inventing something. Its not as easy as you think, and yes there are people that will take advantage of every angle that something has to offer. That shouldnt be a supprise with DoD. The creator of an idea cant see all the mistakes until it is exploited. Even game testers sometimes over look the obvious. Thats why we play to see what we can find that they missed and when we find it we exploit it and capitalize it until the creator say enough and patches it. Hoping to balance it to every one. This will happen with every patch and every expansion so get over it. Remember its just a game, so lets have fun.

For 70s the exp of the MM pretty much is sub-par as is... if you can't solo an aa or get one in grp in 45 min you pretty much suck. However, the drops are truly CRAPTACULAR--pure Sony junk with dame designers that don't even know about this game. Drops that are worse than players can buy in the bazaar, OOW armor or DoN crystals making this gear sad and silly. How about some nice augs Sony! Good for casual gamers and higher players--MM won't cater to anguish players for drops but give players EITHER good aas or halfway decent stuff! As usual a good idea and Sony makes it so cheap with benefits to be ruined--like the solo tasks. Maybe a 60hp FT2 aug, 65hp 25atk aug, etc...

Speak for yourself Div. I have gotten several good upgrades already from MM's.

As far as "if you can't solo an aa or get one in grp in 45 min you pretty much suck."
I think your attitude sucks personally.

And "However, the drops are truly CRAPTACULAR--pure Sony junk with dame designers that don't even know about this game. Drops that are worse than players can buy in the bazaar"

Not everyone can buy thier gear

Its pretty evident that you do not have a good grasp on who is playing the game. Not only that, but you attempt to make suppositions on which you have only a small clue about. You have only a fraction of the knowledge it takes to make one intelligent, but just enough to make them dangerous.

Be sure to check your shoelaces before you walk out the door in the morning so you don't trip on the way to the crapper.

Try to think of others instead of yourself next time.

It isnt all about you!

If mm only are good for the casual player at least they serve a valid purpose. If high-end raiders dont like what mm offer they can choose to high-end raid, that option is not available to most (if any) casual players.

I dont think that they should nerf the exp in the MM, i just think that they should make it to where your char has to be in zone to get the experience. That way there is no more of the AFKing that is going on. Yes, i admit i hgave taken advantage of the exp. in the MM, but i had a fun time grping with my friends in the game doing it and none of them liked seeing the afk leeching either. So everynight we got a grp of us together and did MM after MM and got some great exp doing it while we were having fun.

The more I play mm the more I think they just need to stop the afk exploiting. The fact that a place is busy using a mechanism that lets level 35 players get into groups is very good.

Nerfing the xp or drops doesn't really benefit the newer or casual player... which mm are friendly to at the moment. A person would be silly to ignore their skills for 30 levels, but that is the individual player. It is not like the xp is not available to older players, so the first 200 aa took more grinding than the next 200.

I still hate being a fairy though.

Have to agree
The first xp nerf they did to the MMs was noticable, but not devastating ...
The changes in difficulty to some of the MMs was a little worse, making those MMs not as viable as others (ie. Fairy in Nektulos and Griffin in West Commons)... but people still did MMs
If this next patch nerfs the xp even more, or makes them even more difficult, then DoD really is going to be a wasted expansion. LDoN died a gruesome death ... it's next to impossible to get people to do those due to the horrible xp and mediocre reward. Now I have yet to see the AFK exploit on E-Marr ... but some of the changes they have made to the MMs thusfar have turned a lot of people off to DoD, and I know that if it gets any worse with this next patch, it's gonna be back to Creators. RSS, WoS, ect. for a lot of people.

"If this next patch nerfs the xp even more, or makes them even more difficult, then DoD really is going to be a wasted expansion."

Try any of the Dreadspire Access missions? Any of the Spell Missions? - Expansion isn't a total loss - to be honest I've done five MMs so far and didnt really care for them.

XP is out there to be had if you just go get it. It's not going to be handed to you "ALL THE TIME" - Chalk another one up to Generation Me!

Alot of you guys that say DoD is gonna die if they nerf the MMs. Not true, you are forgetting the MM's arent the only thing offered by DoD, there are instances for Spells and there is normal zone prgression. Besides even if the cut the xp you are reciveing in half from the MM its still awesome xp. my char at lvl 70 recieved over 1 aa each mission, now in the 15 min it takes to do some of these ill only get about a half an aa, still beats a normal group in most places! Looks like we might just have to earn all of our xp.../shrug good thing its a game...

DOD is a nice break from my normal fire,rs,mpg grind ive played my toon from lv1 to 70 and earned everything along the way so to take a break and take it easy and get some nice xp was a nice change but hey if they nerf it bad im still gonna play the DOD its something different and its the challenge that keeps me in the game.

Ya know, my kids have microwave popcorn and I had to pop mine in an iron skillet with cooking oil and hoping not to burn it the whole time.

I leveled my chars slowly but surely and have enjoyed most of it, but I hear take of when you had to take a boat to where you had to go and POK ... whats that. Lets just face it, the game will always be changing, and as the world does, nto always for the better. But people who start the game now will have it easier now than I ever did, and I most certainly had it alot easier than many of you did back in the early days of EQ. But given a choice in playing my level 70s with my friends level 70's or sitting lfg for hours on my lowly 55's, well lets just say...

I would rather microwave my popcorn.

I am in so much of an agreement with you. Sometimes you have to take what you can get and hope to receive a break every now and again, because there was a time when that wasn't an option. But I think we have made the best of it. Lvl 70 doesn't come from one expansion over night.
Reward for effort

What about a different approach...

In a perfect eq world there would be no ebay chars, xp leeched or pled no skilled characters. Lets ignore them and assume a person has earned their main characters level through effort.

Suppose I have done this, gotten to level 70 and decided 300 AA into it that I am bored of monk. I have to start at level 1. For most people this is "Yuck get me to 50+ asap".

How about a new option on the character creation screen that is unlocked by the highest level character on your account. Maximum level is 55. opens up 10 levels under.

So a level 70 monk could start a level 55 cleric, full spell book and expected skills in place (not quests like LoY). With a full set of nifty no drop expected stat gear (gloomingtwink2).

A level 40 ranger could create any new level 30 they wanted to and so on.

Would anyone under level 50 be able to get a group?... I think it would pretty much ensure that people under level 50 were new or hardcore going to play it all. Would this be a bad thing?

edit: my 25 beast (in the sig) is my lowest character. I like that he is levelling slow. Would I be tempted to try out a level 50 druid? yes. Would I be a newb druid... mostly. Maybe the characters created this way would need to be a generic new race --like a sign saying "potential high level newb". Limit each account to one testdrive... whatever makes it work.

Best part? Make it part of the next expansion... can't give anything for free :)

This one goes into the record books of Impatient.

You, and those that think like you, are poison. It is all the peeps like you that are in an all-out race to get to level 70 with 1500AAs that kill this game. Of course you want this in a few evenings, at most. Of course if you get bored, you NOW want an even faster track to the 'end'.

You suck.

Why don't you just get your parents to buy some FPS game and save your settings when you get 5mins from the end of the game. Then you play it over and over again until your hearts content. Hell, you could get your parents to buy some trade mag, get the hack code and then not even earn your way to the last 5mins. That should make you even happier.

This game started out with people EARNING their gear. Every step was slow, but extremely rewarding. I fear that all the people like you have taken this game in an irreversible direction.

By the way, you suck.
RE: Reward for effort
# Oct 30 2005 at 10:53 AM Rating: Decent
Umm, think you missed my intent. The impatient people are ruining the low end game because all the fun places are camped by <insert level 10-46> non-solo class being babysat by level 65-70 whatever. It is hard enought for a level 23 new player to get a group let alone having to go 3-4 places to find a zone they can play in. Good luck if they can't solo.

I personally would love to see spells nerfed so PLing is not feasible. Make temperance req level 35. DS only stick 10 levels below the spell. Make all gear required level suitable to where it drops (and make the drops appropriate for the level to obtain them.

Since Sony clearly has no intent of stopping powerlevelling or the total bypassing of low-end content to level 55 (65) my suggestion was to create a mechanism to give these people what they want (start at level 30-40-whatever)and get them out of the low end game where they do the most damage. At higher levels, being a no-skilled no awareness of your class player bites you back very quickly.

I have no problem with you disliking my idea Horwoodlake. I am not sure I like it. Perhaps there is another way. That would be a discussion worth having.

55 may be way too high. Doesn't the test server let you start at 30? (asking because I was told this a long time ago and have never been on test myself).

I would love to see a non-test server try out some outside the box ideas... (like a 1 character server where everything is no drop except tradeskill components and products).

I am in a small guild with several new to EQ players. They have a terrible time getting a group in the 10-35 range because most of the established players seem to be either twinked to the point they can solo (whether they are a true solo class or not) or always have a higher level babysitter. Once in a while, a PLer lets them into a group.

The thing is, they are not all looking to just xp quickly. They want to actually play the game. Of course, letting people start their alts at level 30 doesn't do much for the new under 30s except empty the popular camps of Plers maybe.

On the bright side, I just got DoD so I can shroud down and group with them.

pull similar monsters with snare, one at a time. move around them, getting them to follow you in such a way that they get all clumped together. Like right on top of eachother. Once you've done that, use your area of effect direct damage spells to hit them all at once. Often times, getting them into position can take so much time that snare wears off and you get problems, so you may need to recast snare on them (your snare is area of effect too so if they are all bunched together it will hit all of them).
This works best on 4 monsters of the same type. Otherwise you can get monsters with different run speeds. Cobalt scar is a good place to do this, so are the hill giants in mountains of rathe.
Good luck, why did you post this question here?

What I think of the update:

*A new UI? for what? I have to admit they kinda made things weird with that EQ button, but what else are they doing, unless if they're making it like the Escape To Norrath UI...wich I'm not a huge fan of.
* I don't have DoD, but sounds great, by other posters.
*Finally! Now I can easily switch to alla and look at that quest guide (could be good and bad)
*Woot! Too bad Kith is usually inhabited by dead things at night...but it's enough to "stop by".
*Yes! Cause we all know that elves look horrible in leather and chain hats...not to mention the Gnomes with their bug goggles...
*Banks seemed fine to me...wonder what this is all about...
*...um...why? if you're doing that AND making the mouse thing being abl;e to switch back and forth...bah, I dunno.
*What?
*Good for Koboban!
*Hey...bout time...I was tired of training to zone and exiting at 20% to only find that I zoned back to my bind spot...

** Another good update, I suppose, but I hope this doesn't lead into too many bad things...**
Patch can't come soon enough for me
# Oct 18 2005 at 6:51 PM Rating: Decent
Wow, I'm so disgusted with the exploitation in EQ of the BB mission I went and bought..um..WoW lol..World of Warcraft. It arrived yesterday, so I probably won't be around EQ much anymore, lvl 70 just became so cheap and it was my aspiration to reach 70/build multiple AA's and enjoy the challenges in my way (it was never about the gear or the raiding). You take that away and there's nothing left for me to aim for, it's too easy now. All the people who worked hard for it before were to be respected for their efforts, now you have lvl 70's with no real achievements behind them to show for it.

Can't say I'm too impressed with the people who have chosen to exploit it either, my friends list used to be so much longer :( Common argument I'm getting is, I'm doing the mission, everyone else is AFK. Freeloading, and supporting freeloaders is the same thing as far as I'm concerned.

After all this is over I reckon I'll be the only toon on the server (Maelin/Vazaelle) who's still lvl 63, if I'm still playing the game. I love doing the MM's, they're fantastic, but there's no-one to do them with because everyone is AFK in BB *snort*.

RE: Patch can't come soon enough for me

Hallelujah - I completely agree. I am a casual player, although I have barely played since the DoD expansion. I have seen other casual players go from lvl 55, with no AAs, to lvl 65 with 50 AAs in a few days, not learning anything in the process.

I think the next expansion needs a new AA to make things fair for everyone:

Exploitation of the Lazy

Type: Activated, Refresh Time: 1:00:00
You may train this ability at Level 1
Requirements: at Level 0.

This ability gives you one AA for each green con mob you kill.
RE: Patch can't come soon enough for me

Amen. Same thing is happening on Povar as well, with people gaining levels in insane amounts of time, or 200+ AAs in a matter of days. I've given up on MMs due to the same reasons you have, save for the few where the entire group is actually in the MM together. I still enjoy earning my levels, and AAs the old fashioned way, if you may.

Im in total agreement. I've quit doing the MM altogether due to the /afk groups. I don't know if it's the same on the other servers but here on Maelin/Vazaelle ppl have went from 40th to 60th since the DoD came out. What I think is funny tho is the fact that these dopes aren't raising their skills, or learning the Character Class for that matter.

what is the difference I can still bring all my other accounts along, bring them into the mission in BB, do it solo and all get exp. It would be nice to toggle several of the graphic looks really. I liked my cleric in dark elf cultural (old school) because it looked like chain that a rogue should wear but then everything else on him had the plate graphic. I hate my wood elf ranger's dress but I liked his crazy helmet and so on...

I don't know how much of a programming issue it would be to just let people select the armor look. Make it a plat drain like prismatic dye if you must.

I realize it used to matter in eq the graphics items had because your colour/style could be unique to your class and for some there was an incentive to collect a whole set of armor so you would match. I think it is fair to say this is now the minority viewpoint with most characters dyed all black or red.

I like the idea of requiring all of the players to play in the MM...I know some people who log their toons, leave and just collect AA xp all day. I think its okay to leave them as excellent XP and those people who do PL their toons in them will have to make it up somewhere. Casters you can at least to some degree work up those skills in the GH hot tub, but for any kind of fighter it doesnt work at all. As far as loot, I would love to see something other than "boots" in the BB MM.

I would love to use them to PL my Cleric the last few levels to get her to 50, but I don't think that would benefit me or the other people I group with..
Thank goodness

The MM XP is fine as long as each member of the party is required to participate. Having 5 toons sit outside AFK while one toon completes the mission is an exploit any way you look at it.

Personally I took a couple of years off of EQ, and managed to find out about the great xp in MM's before they sucked all of the xp out of them. Normally in RS I get an AA every 25 minutes. DoD is 2 expansions further along so I would expect better xp than I get in OoW and better loot as well. So far since the xp nerf I haven't found anything to approach OoW or DoN. The loot for the missions is laughable, I wouldn't even put it on my twink. I think people just need to realize each expansion should have a little upgrade in xp and loot, and I am sorry that some people are being PL'd but guess what....they were being PL'd in other expansions too. If you find a wizard that thinks Quad Kite is a new zone, then don't group with them.

could you please put some punctuation in your never-ending sentence?

At any rate: I find your way at looking at things very strange...you're a newbie if your lvl is low and you don't know what you're doing, such as new players.

SOE forms to it's customers waayy too easily, and there's always going to be someone to complain. It's like this; people who like it, don't go around saying how much they like it as much as the people who don't and rant on forums. Therefore, you only hear the obsesing and the ranting and all the complaining, which is purely opinions, that possibly affect your own.

By SOE giving in, they don't think about their consequenses (sp?), so they make the game too easy. Just think, that you had to travel the world by foot, and now...we got PoK and yet we're complaining on how slow it is all the time.

Good they "nerve" these sick missions.
i think they make it more balanced...

What is the diference of getting your *** kicked in WoS by some Bazu or getting killed in Blackburrow by a Gnoll? NOTHING. you are just not wielding as fancy weapons but the chalange is the same. i think they should make the questing part more interesting.

And those freebee armor you get from those missions should even be weakened too. make more of your own weapons and grear, Quest it, fight for it. Dont allow twinks.
RE: EXP is not the sum of it all
# Oct 18 2005 at 9:31 PM Rating: Decent
For the armor/weapons part of your response, I got somehting to say.

I agree with you there, except for the part where you have to make it or quest it. Quests and smithing and what-not has been outdated by far, and players are looking for more than the regular old spiffy stuff. They want the new spiffy stuff, that's shiny and can make them solo everything and even has a big name-- with tin foil, too!

point is, SOE or whomever should update these quest rewards and smithing stuff to better fit today's standards. But not to the effect that you can get a lvl 70 toon to farm things for you, but make it a challenge for everyone. Obviously, money isn't a problem for most people anymore, so buying stuff and selling stuff is useless.

Just put no drop loot in low level zones that is worthy of the current game. Emperor Crush must have got some reinforcements with better gear by now.

I think maybe some of you are reading this the wrong way. Recent discussions about DoD have been that the reward for completing the Spell mission is poor compared to the difficulty of the mission. Indeed people with TIME+ gear have had great difficulty completing the missions to find 120hp gear they wont use. SoE have talked about increasing the rewards or reducing the difficulty of the missions. If its the former I hope they will reimburse the 5 items I have destroyed.

I do not welcome the MM nerf. They are going to make them worthless like LDON. Take away the Monster Missions then I would just assume not have DOD, cause I sure don't get any use out of the crappy new zones. It does seem like they have suckered enough people to buy the expansion so now they must nerf it...AGAIN.

I have played the Monster Missions with my newbie alts. Assumeing I coudl actually get a group together at lower levels (which is about impossible anymore) I would get just as much exp in a normal exp group at lvl 30 then I would from many of the Monster Missions. I get about 2 yellows of exp per mission at lvl 30. I can get that much exp in a good pick up group (or soloing as my alt is a necro). The only reason newbies can level up so fast in a MM is because you can actually get a group! Basically they do not have to sit around LFG all day long.

All these people talk about the evils of newbies power leveling, but they have no choice if they want exp? What do you expect them to do when they do a who all for there level and see 5 people on-line (3 of which are generally bazaar mules)?

Also with Monster Missions there is a certain degree of risk with them. Granted you do not lose exp if you die, but you can also quite easily spend 40min to 1 hour and not have 1 copper or any exp to show for it. Get a Orc mission going and some idiot screws up and kills the dark elf, there goes 30 minutes of your life for nothing. So if people are successful in them they should get a good % of exp.

I don't mind the idea of putting lock outs on them, but they do not need to nerf the % of exp you get from them, they all ready did that once. I just wonder how much money SOE would lose if they let people get a partial refund on a expansion after they nerf them? Of course that won't ever happen, but I say they would lose quite abit.

Not having the head gear show up on half-elves is cool. They has some of the *worst* looking head gear in the game.

As for the XP and gear changes for MMs...I welcome it. Someone in a former guild had her mage PLed from 32 to 65...too bad all of her skills were still sitting as they were at level 32. She admits that she regrets it...she's having a hell of a time getting some of her skills up. I don't know about any other server, but the PLing and AA PLing has gotten out of hand on the Tribunal.

Wonder what the big change in the UI is? Kinda like it the way it is, IMHO. Bring on the Holloween event...Kith Forest is the perfect place for it due to its late-night undead.

lol, in other words, sales of the new expansion have finally slowed down, all those "fence-sitters" that were debating whether or not to buy DOD expansion were suckered into it because of the high xp. SOE have sucked them all into buying it thinking they can level their toons up faster. Well, I guess sales have died..we all bought it, therefore no need to leave these little "exploits" live any longer.

Boy, am I cynical or what??!!??!!

Good marketing. I congratulate Sony. Everybody afk-- whether you agree with it or not is a problem as far as the intergrity of the game goes.

Watching my character sit afk and get xp is not much fun. Playing my character is.

Hiding Helms

Being able to hide your helmets is a good thing. I have trouble upgrading my head-slot item because I just won't wear something that shows-up there. I just don't like the look of robes + leather head gear on a human.
