Dev Chat on Nov 24th, Preview of Potential Melee Changes

From the EQLive Site:
EverQuest Chat on November 24th at 6:00pm - 7:00pm pacific time. Melee System Enhancements! You've been asking for them and now we're ready to discuss them. We're taking a big departure from what many of you are used to when it comes to combat. With that in mind, here is a brief summary of these exciting enhancements to better help you target your questions to us during the live chat. Don't worry if you miss the chat, we'll post the logs on EverQuestLive.com
  • Increase the contributions melee classes provide in a group setting
  • Address the current deficit between the pure melee classes and other classes
  • Add more depth and potential for skilled play to melee combat
  • Provide a system that encourages attentiveness and decision-making skills, without focusing heavily on twitch gameplay Take advantage of an opponent's weakness. See an opening, strike home for the kill! Monks, Rogues and Warriors will gain the ability to recognize certain weaknesses in an opponent's defense. These "Openings" will be a variety of types and can occur based on several different situations during combat. Be quick though, an opening will not present itself for long. Strike quick with a new combat skill once your character recognizes an opening. These new combat skills are being designed just for this combat system revision. Using and maintaining these skills expends the character's Endurance (a new statistic, calculated from the character's basic stats). Here's a combat example: A warrior is serving as the tank for his group, standing in front of a goblin. While battling the goblin, the warrior makes an exceptional parry and is presented with an opening. An indicator appears with the "opening icon" and the word "Parry" next to it (this information also appears in the chat window). Now is his opportunity to strike back after the exceptional parry! Only certain combat skills can be used to react to a parry opening. Other types of openings will allow the use of other skills. Some skills may be usable in response to more than one type of opening. Also, your position in relation to the target can change the effectiveness of certain skills. In this case, our warrior knows that he can use one of three combat skills, each having some merit. One might stun the target, one might increase the hate generated by the warrior for a few rounds, and one might make it easier for everyone to hit the NPC. In this case, our warrior elects to try to stun the goblin. He presses the appropriate button and luck smiles upon him as he successfully executes the strike, leaving the goblin standing dumbly for a combat round. Increasing Your Endurance and Learning New Skills
  • Increase Endurance by increasing attributes or by acquiring special items that directly increase your Endurance pool
  • Find tomes or instructions manuals and take them to specific trainers to learn new skills
  • Choose your skills from skill categories (such as Tactical) containing skills focused to a purpose
  • Most openings are available only to a single character, but some are available to all nearby characters
  • Disciplines will be transferred to this new system
  • Existing Discipline timers will be reviewed, and several will probably be set to their own timer
  • Disciplines will require an Endurance cost
  • Hybrids will receive a limited Endurance pool for their disciplines There will be other changes as well. Keep your eyes on the Test server and our update messages for more details as we move forward. This new system is much more flexible than the existing disciplines. It will be relatively easy to add new combat skills, as well as new skills that are not limited to openings. This system creates the possibility for tremendous enhancement in the future, allowing groups a large number of options when it comes to melee combat. Talk to you in the Live Chat! Alan

    -65 Warrior FV server-

Really think they should reduce the amount of aggro SK's Pal's get from casting a spell too low to affect creature like most currently do to aquire massive hate...give it 1 hate point and lets see them take taunt that way:) really instead of upgrading Warriors taunt to make up for it giving a message(this creature is too high to cast this spell on) and for the stuns if the stun dont affect the creature all they have to do is treat it like a...what 100 point nuke? go and reduce snare aggro on mobs 58+ as well and Warriors should never have problems keeping aggro compared to the hybrids again :)(cept for them sneaky lil rogues , tho they tend to not want aggro and have ways to fix that)

Currently the only place the Warrior really shines (most agree) is in raids tanking the hardest hitting mobs. Really at this point i dont mind that. But for alot of folks that either arent in a raiding guild , or dont play a whole lot , they will never reach the point in which they arent 2nd rate.

Also wouldnt mind being able to use some of those SK/Pal only weps with uber ratio (even if using a shield in secondary is required)

I think this is all funny... people talking about it being boring for a warrior, boohoo a Sk holds better argo... well remember back in the day, verant also said warriors were the easiest, most straight forward character to play.

So why does it have to be that for the humpteen million warriors and twinkie warriors out there... that they have to complain about what a different class does or does not have? I mean the simple way to clear all this crap up is, to simply re roll something that is less easy, or straight forward to play... something that proves a challenge to play... something that from day one, was advertized as as being most complicated to play.

Warrior class is not for everyone, though everyone had a choice, live with your choices, and stop complaining that someone else is enjoying their choice, and that the grass appears to be greenier on the other side. I mean shazbot... If in the begining you wanted a easy class to play, and now that class isn't fulfilling your expectations, switch classes..

Also whats the worst that can happen, a sudden drop in warriors across the board... high end guilds actually catering to what left over warriors there are, and being thankful they have that massive orger standing in front of that nasty mob, and perhaps the best possible thing that could happen... Sony would diffiantly see the class break down, and see there is a lack of.. and quickly work for a solution... instead of all the whining/complaining/3rd grade playground bickering, that hasn't changed anything in over a year anyways. This game is exactly like real life... its full of choices.. most poor people continue to be poor because of choice... Warriors / dissatified customers continue to be dissatified customers cause of choice.

Try playing something else if your not happy with warriors... after all it is YOUR choice!

I have just started a warrior not to long ago. He is level 27 right now and a friend told me to delete him and start a Sk or Pally. Having played all the casters classes. I belive i will stay with the Mage and Necro. 1ST i dont have to rely on tanks Becuase i brought my own. 2Nd mage can send pet in and the nuke. Necros can Root DoT and Fear kite . No others needed. They do have to work on Warrior's taunt and making them the Tank they where back in the day. But warriors can Stage a one day all warriors Cancell there accounts for a day to let SoE know they better get it togather..

IMO.. Warriors just need to be Warriors, rather than Paladins without spells, plus two weapons, or Rangers without spells with better armor..

The Game as it is is BORING for warriors..
    (Wait for Pull)
    (Smack)
(Mash Taunt until your fingers bend in ways they shouldnt)
    (rinse)
    (Call Assist)
    (Repeat)

..That's how it is.. This new Smacking in openings is a good thing. It'll make it more interesting.. it just means that I can't tank in my sleep anymore.

    Either pick this, or reduce the Hate on Stun spells, or give the Stun spells a higher delay.. preventing them from being cast like nothing else and stacking the hate like Perfume on old people.. ^_^;

ok... here goes.... warriors advantages: critical... ok everyone with enough time to spend aa points gets a crit these days... beserk... useless... what cleric in their right mind will let the main tank get to 30% if they have mana to prevent it? taunt... useless with the sk/pally stunning, doting & hitting taunt... hit point advantage... woot we shine brighty in this area our 8k hp verses the similarly clad pally with his 6.5 to 7k will allow us to last 2 hits longer than a pally, woot im excited sarcastically speaking. our ac advantage... never saw it once everyone got the armor upgrades. originally i did see it (i have been in EQ since beta)i think our last advantage is we can use any weapon class in the game... woot not that a pally cant use everything cept piercing, sk's use everything, rogues use everything cept 2hs, rangers use everything. i wonder what advantages a warrior does get?
    shaman's stealing agro without SLOW!
    # Dec 02 2003 at 3:40 PM Rating: Default
i've been noticing more and more as of late...i can steal agro from a group, filled wtih all three, ranger, shadowknight, and paladin just by sending my pet in while sitting...i guess it was a good way to stop necro's from soloing....or casters from medding while there pet was fighting...but i can out agro a warrior HALF way into the fight just by sitting and hitting the attack button.
That said...personally i've played a warrior up until 52 and i must say...as a dwarf :)...agro doesn't need to be fixed as much as a super taunt...doesn't make sense...all you have to do is find what gets you agro the best, certain wepon combo's work wonders on mobs. And even then if they upgraded agro all you would become is a bard who plays the same 4 songs day in day out no matter what was happening.

and guys, dont look a gift horse in the mouth, they are trying to make the game more fun, and i mean, its not a chore to play this game if you have to click some buttons, how freaking lazy can you be? in some cases you can just hit auto attack and leave the computer

    # Dec 02 2003 at 2:31 AM Rating: Default
Not to really cause a big flaming here...

I play a warrior of a warrior of the 59th level.

My regular group of equal level char's consists of a bard , shaman , magician , cleric , and my warrior.

I have never had a problem keeping aggro unless the creature is rooted and im not the closest to it. I mean the normal procedure on a pull is the magician malosini as long as the shaman waits 2 secs fer me to taunt before the slow lands then its all good.the bard cant take taunt unless he has charmed or mez'd it. so i got no complaints but I also havent tried keeping it off the other melee's.
I dont like the fact that the hybrids get all kinds of bonus's with the magic and the non-magic users are left out.Pals and even the bard have better stat-wise weps then warriors are given and can have an equal amount of AC. They give us slightly more HP and Crit. Alot of the other skills we had only to us are given later to the other classes in AA's or skills.I think maybe a skill that warriors get that increases dmg mitigation. How bout another skill that increases and increases AC along with Defense skill. The rage meter sounds real good because the only time i get to berzerk is playing around with the 2 handers in karnors. The bard crits near as much as I do with both of us at CF2 so an increase there would be nice , and seperate friggin timers for my disciplines , for each one , would be nice. I havent seen a new skill since level 35...go ahead and give me block.

I would really like better quality bandaids , that go above 50% without spending AA's. All buffed up i got bout 6k hp, if i go solo a couple blues and bandaid up i still got 3000 hp to sit up. ok say yer lucky and have a fungus scale tunic..i dunno what the regen is but say yer getting 30. thats still 100 ticks. 10 minutes. so kill 2 things bandaid up for a couple mins and then sit fer 10 more. Now lets say yer like most and your regen is closer to 10-15. yer sitting from 20-30 minutes on yer butt watching the paladin beat things down, root when he gets low , heal up and finish the thing.Sit fer a bit longer with his KEI on and then keep going. Give one of the casters , i dont care which, a long lasting ,3-4 hour extended 40+ point regen.
In our group im just there to keep its attention while the casters kill it , i mean i do a bit of dmg as well but mainly on like Ldon missions im just there fer the cleric to complete heal since he gets better mana/hp ratio on me.

Warrior lvl 53. All I need is fail proof taunt, faster healing, more crits.and more speed in attack mode. I don't think Disiplines are worth the time to use. We don't need more buttons to push.We don't need more pop-ups on the screen. The game is moving away from enjoyment into a career.
Just improve what we have don't continue adding s--t.

After roughly 3 years of playing my warrior, ive all but retired him for a solo caster due to the incessant LFG crap and getting froaked over in the high end. I honestly dont see SOE ever really fixing the problem.

This new system allows for the warrior to be more entertained as he plays for sure, but what good is it if you dont get grouped because you arent the best person for the job of tanking.

After all the years playing my war, i finally got fed up and played a new class without feeling guilty about neglecting my warrior, and have to say that after playing the necromancer class long enough now I am amazed at the versatility a caster has over a warrior.

The necromancer isnt a great class for grouping, but the solo abilities by far balance the problem. If you take away a warriors ability to group, they just get good at gems because they are solely dependent on grouping.

Dunno, i love the game and will continue to play most likely, but also i will most likely choose to play without my warrior. Its a shame, I really do enjoy the warrior class but also have too much respionsibility in RL to spend all my gametime LFG.

wow , i cant beleive i took the time to read all these posts. That must be proof of what is becoming of EQ, its full of people who cry and complain all the time. " we monks want this , we warriors need that, my dps isnt good enough" ..so on and so on. the fact is that none of the old zones are gone , the old mobs are still there . people are saying they lack use in new expansions..well friends its somone elses turn to shie, take a back seat like they have in all the previous expansions and stfu. Ok now thats out of my system, sure the warriors need a new taunt system..plain as day. Everyone else is just trying to capitilize on the attention from SOe while they have it. So now instead of it bieng a warrior issue ..its a melee issue, how can you post complaints like these and wonder why they come up with a new melee system? How about we all play EQ , learn how to not take tuant from warriors until they fix it , and stop crying about how much we want for our 13 dollars a month. If you cant do that then maybe you should spend that 13 bux on some more interactive entertainment ..its called a life.

My warrior, now 51, was unable to find a group from level 20 to level 51, so soloed all the way. She did this with no healer. Going was very slow, but now that you are penalized for soloing by getting less experience than when in a group will make the future not worth playing. As a matter of fact I have not played my warrior since they took away the soloing experience as no one wants warriors in their groups. They are always asking for paladins, shadow knights and beastlords. My paladin and shadow knight love this as originally no one wanted them either. Back then they were always asking for clerics and monks. And I haven't played my monk in a year. If they keep changing things soon we will have everyone playing only one class. Anyway, I agree that all the warriors need is unfailable taunt. I don't want the game to be more complicated to play. RL is complicated enough and I play EQ to get away from RL and unwind. And after RL who can think? We are all braindead by the time we can sit, relax and play a game for a couple hours for enjoyment. Anyway, just my 2 cp worth.

As a L47 Warrior, what I'd really like to see implemented is a "Rage Meter" (simular to a mana bar) that gradually builds up with the more damage a Warrior takes. When Rage Meter hits 100% he goes Berserk for X number of rounds.

The current system where a Warrior doesn't go Berserk until he reaches (around) 30% doesn't work in group situations - if the healer is doing his job the Warrior never gets that low.

Taunt needs to be made No-Fail, too, IMHO.

I don't want to push more buttons or read more scrolling text when my level 54 warrior is fighting. The only messages I want to see more of are "Rulauk scores a critical hit..." etc. The solution to all of the warrior complaints is FIX THE TAUNT. SOE probably will not listen so we had better all get ready to play World of Warcraft

Like all the other warriors, I am of the opinion that fixing Taunt is the biggest issue. If they want to add all that other stuff fine, but fixing taunt should be the priority. I don't know how many times I have been unable to taunt off a mob that went after a chanter who cast a slow spell. Once taunt skillreaches say 175 or so it should be No Fail. I would also like to see warrios crits count as an successful taunt.

Also think they should give warriors specialiations in weapon types, similar to what casters have with classes of spells. Give added damage and increase chance to crit and parry with specialized weapons.

    # Nov 29 2003 at 12:20 AM Rating: Default
taunt is not broken, it works exactly as it was intended to. it gives you the chance to exceed others on the hate list by just one point of hate - thats all. Don't ask for them to fix taunt, ask for a new one altogether. as is if taunt fails you recieve no fail message, and you gain no agression. a failed taunt should at least generate a little agression. the timer on it should be shorter, or ffs give us two taunt buttons please. all too easy fixes for SoE though, i dont expect warriors to recieve any inteligent upgrades anytime soon, if ever.

either warrior taunt and dps should be upgraded, or knights and hybrids should be nerfed to hell =)

    flame away.

63 Saryn War here. Been playing my Warrior for about 2 and a half years, and it has been a long road. my warrior is my one and only character that I really play and I truly love my character. I am very excited about the new melee additions just to make combat a bit more interesting, but as many post's before this one. all I really wanted was just a better taunt. nothing more, nothing less. I have watched my usefullness drop drasticly once I got into the second tier plans. I almost hang my head in shame when I have to let a pally or sk tank over me. And then to sometimes be alowed to get pity aggro from the group just to remind me what it was like to be the king of the tank world. Though there will never be a better raid tank than a warrior, how often do you really raid. Just let me get the aggro like I was ment to do and everything will be fine..Getting tired of wipeing out the sarmak fort in LOIO becuase the other 20 warriors and myself can't get picked up for a group. and thats my spill.

If they install a patch we spend hours, days, weeks, getting everything straightened out.Let's not add more to the game, but work out the problems they have already installed in the game. Perhaps then minor changes can be introduced without major bugs and major complaints.
    Bandages instead of tactics
    # Nov 25 2003 at 7:40 PM Rating: Default
Have only one thought to this whole line of issues. I'm a 54 warrior and hate to group. Give me bandages that heal for more than 50% and let me roam the wilds. It will be even worse if I group and have to think (at my age that's a tough job)on my feet what skill am I to use in this situation. Don't need spells or buttons, just bandages.
    Monk, War
    # Nov 25 2003 at 7:57 AM Rating: Default
My main is a monk. I am (mostly) excited about the greater possibilities these changes will present in combat. However, I see no obvious solution to the aggroe problems of the warrior class, unless they ALWAYS choose the increase hate option when an "opening" is presented. That is not cool. My thought is that simply upping the effectiveness of taunt would not solve anything. Palis / SKs would then get better taunt as well. The solution, as I see it, is a simple addition of the "provoke" ability to the warrior lineup. Don't give them a huge advantage, but something with a reasonable cycle time, and hate that actually comes CLOSE to casting a stun. I like the idea that skill and/or strategy will have a say in melee combat, as that was a lacking element for my warrior. It seems like you A)hope you live long enough to get healed, and B)Hope the monster dies before cleric calls OOM. Rogues get a noticable advantage in the DPS field. Warriors SHOULD NOT get any more. They're place is the bottom of the pile in DPS. (no offense, it's the class definition in EQ land)
Another idea is, like SKs get their emergency FD, and Palis their LoH, grant warriors an ability, with whatever rediculous cycle time you deem fit. (90min?) The ability should grant them suicide bash, BIG damage, that either costs them their life outright, or hurts them. Or, just the damage.... once in a great long time. At this point, all warriors have in their "back pocket," is berserk mode- a JOKE! You nerfed the H--- out of every character to make soloing impossible/ mind-numbingly tedious. So at LEAST make up for it! Berserk mode simply does not exist in your FORCED group play. The tank takes too much damage to not be healed the second he's low enough to go berserk. Berserk on, berserk off. What's the point? You've ruined this singular gift to warriors. Sigh... I play my monk more anyway. At least I can build a reputation as an expert puller, even if my warrior is just labeled and dismissed as the worthless wish-I-could-tank you've made him.

Well I'm a 65 BL and I must say, the thing that would be NICE of SoE to do for Warriors is make it so each normal taunt produced the aggro of say, AETaunt. My RL best friend plays a warrior and I group with him pretty much whenever I'm playin, and well if I can jack aggro with 1 slow and 1 dot when the mob is at 80% and my friend is mashing taunt while using 2 aggro producing weps, both with anger augs in them, there is something SERIOUSLY wrong. A paly or SK can easily hold aggro over me and well, hopefully SoE is seein this and makes it so Taunt works better, not the system DAoC had. I played an Armsman in DAoC and hated when my endurance ran out how aggro could get stolen from me easily. Come on, why do that?

through some testing of my own , getting a succesfull taunt while you currently have aggro can actually cause you to lose aggro

ill explain why ive come to this conclusion.

I believe a succesfull taunt raises your current hate to 1 hate point higher then the current hate leader. I believe it does not take into account your current hate at the time. so an example:
Warrior current hate leader with 1000 hate , next on list is lets say SK with 800 hate. i believe a succesful taunt will take you to 801 hate.

Why is the warrior mashing taunt? Hitting taunt provides no affect if you are already at the top of the mob's hate list.
    RE: Just my lil view
    # Nov 27 2003 at 3:20 AM Rating: Decent
As a warrior you must continue hitting taunt even if you are at the top of the mobs hate list for one reason...if someone else does something to produce hate like slowing the mob for example that produces hate which could cause the mob to focus on them...now if the warrior continues to hit tuant until their keyboard sees' no tomorrow there is a slight chance the mob will not go after the slower! This is why you must continue to hit taunt.
    missed the point or what?
    # Nov 25 2003 at 5:13 AM Rating: Decent
Being a reasonable person who has never played DOAC I am prepared to wait and see how the suggested changes work in practice to help me (59 warrior) hold aggro better.

    /rant on

Having played EQ for 2 years I am yet again stunned (why am I surprised? you would think I would be used to it by now) by how badly Sony have missed the point of all the warrior complaints! Sony execs/game designers/programmers do you understand the concept of pleasing your customers? the people who pay you a fortune and keep you in business??

The PROBLEM is that you made warriors useless outside of a group environment. Nobody minds that we knew that when we started. The PROBLEM is that you then made us pretty useless IN the group environment.

The solution is to give us a TAUNT skill that equates to Pally and SK aggro holding. How hard is that to understand? What is difficult about increasing the hate points and success rate and decreasing the refresh time for warrrior taunt? Thats all we needed. We dont need extra AC/HPs/skills/spam generators.

We do not need complete aggro lock, I dont think any class should be able to do that. It takes all the fun out of the game if you engage mob and can then go an watch TV til the fights over. Equally, it shouldnt be a lottery as to whether or not somebody dies, independant of how good or bad the warrior is at being a warrior. This all that needs to be fixed, I dont believe that is a difficult problem but I dont believe (but remain to be convinced) that these changes will do that.

We want and deserve to be listened to. I enjoy playing my warrior, I am damn good at it too. I have no real trouble getting groups at the moment, though I expect that will change if I ever get to tier II planes. I will not stop playing EQ because playing a warrior the way it was intended to be played is difficult. If I do stop it will be because of your complete indifference to my complaint.

The good thing about EQ is its simplicity - how are you meant to have fun chatting to your group/guild/whoever whilst targeting a new mob, disarming, flying kicking - and then on top of that watching for an 'opening' and trying to decide which move to pull.. oh too late.
Keep it simple. No more buttons to press - give the War a great taunt button. As for monks - I like mine. The only (simple - and there's the key) thing I can think of that might be fun is a critical hit (not the chance of killing outright that comes ages later) - maybe on flying kick after a certain skill.
But please - whatever you do - no filling up my first hotbutton panel with moves that are conditional on the success of a previous move if done at the correct opening time when a certain opening has been achieved.

    Thank you
