Trion Nears 1 Million Mark in Rift Sales

In an interview with Gamasutra, Trion Worlds Senior Vice President of Marketing David Reid confirmed that the company is "on the verge" of selling its 1 millionth unit of Rift. Just to be clear, that figure represents the number of units sold to players, not shipped to retailers.

To celebrate the milestone, Trion will be giving something "special" to the millionth subscriber and his or her referrer. Just think of it as a lottery; you could be the one that helps Trion reach the million mark!

While sales numbers are certainly interesting, player retention is key to the life of an MMO. How many players are currently subscribed to Rift? Reid wouldn't say, but he made an interesting comment:

"We're really pleased with what we're seeing. And beyond that, it was a pleasure to see that in the latest Activision Blizzard earnings call, they inquired about Rift when Blizzard announced that their subscriber numbers went from 12 million to 11.4 million. You can do some math... we know very well where those 600,000 people are."

PVP exists in video games still? I thought after WoW butchered the living hell out of it that people gave up trying to make PVP in MMO's.

why are you guys rambling on about pvp when the topic was 1mill players?
you guys can complain about broken pvp all you want. you know what? these guys update/hotfix more then WoW ever did...atleast they try to fix the game when they see it unlike months later with other games.

PvP is such a pain in the *** to play. No matter what lvl you are you can never have the gear to deal with ppl who can play all day.

How is that any different from people that raid all the time? Or people that run dungeons all the time?

I like pvp in Rift after the 1.2 changes. The DR timers were really needed. I hope they add or increase the DR on Fears. Fear spamming has gotten bad.

Port Scion and Black Gardens are a lot of fun to me. Oh, I don't have any pvp gear yet.
Rift has PvP?

It certainly is extremely hard to enjoy PvP at all. I know that, as a fresh level 50, it will be a long time before I submit myself to the punishment of a Warfront. Likely PvP will be the very last thing I work on with my toon as I don't find getting facerolled every match, however nice the rewards, to be fun and entertaining (difference between P1 and P6 is ludicrous). PvE is where the game shines strong, without a doubt, but when I think of RIFT I no longer immediately imagine any PvP element to it.

Guess it's a good thing I'm not a diehard PvPer nor ever was, but for those who are... well this all probably leaves a bitter aftertaste.

Anywho, it is still good to see this level of success so early. My hope is that we can continue to see this level of adaptability and evolution in the years to come (and that PvP gets the spa treatment sooner rather than later, heh).
PvP is broken

To reiterate what Phuri said. This game is nearly damn perfect, but when it comes to PvP it fails on such a massive scale that it almost makes me want to quit 4 levels until 50. PvP balance is soo bad its just unbearable. PvP is all about spamming your AoE spells around the capture point/fang hoping that your healers can outhealer thier healers. Doing single target damage is just pointless. You know when PvP consist of useing 1 spell to make a difference there is a huge problem on your hands. Thats probably why many players quit doing it. Which would also explain why Queues take 30mins+ Cross realm.

Really happy for Trion to come close to that mark, but, since Warfronts still need work, with all the cheating, afk-ing, botting noted, oh, and the fact that the skills we were told wouldn't work when holding the Fang, somehow still work!! Trion, I'm sorry, but you are losing many players to all this, even as you get the ones that leave WoW for Rift (probably the ones that got caught cheating in WoW to begin with, and finding it easier to cheat in Rift).

I have enjoyed playing Rift, but I am having a VERY HARD TIME understanding how you are celebrating the near 1 million mark, while many of your loyal subscribers are washing their hands of your game. Please take care of these issues before you find yourselves holding alot of cancelled subscription invoices.

News flash. Trion knows how many people PvP and knows how many walked away because of it. Me, still here, never PvP, never cared to. Certainly not going to leave because of it. Will however walk if LFG times stay above 10m. Dump the support slot please =) I'm leveling a bard but man I'd much rather play my tank. But the way the LFG is, being a tank means waiting and waiting and... Would say go x-server but that would just add more tanks to the queue ;)
