SOE Begins Restoration of Services

UPDATE, May 14, 7:15p.m. EDT: SOE has slowly begun restoration of their services.

SOE - Restoration Announcement
SOE - Welcome Back Program
SOE - Recent Updates

SAN DIEGO, May 14, 2011 - Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE) announced today that restoration of its game services will begin today. The phased restoration will include the return of nearly all of SOE's portfolio of online games, the reinstatement of SOE's game forums and websites, and added functionality to require players to reset their passwords.

For details on the hacker attack that has kept SOE down since May 2 and compromised the personal information of players, check out SOE's brief FAQ and all of our previous coverage. See this article for the May 12th news on the "Make Good" program details.

During the downtime you are welcome to join us in ZAM's IRC chat. Feldon of EQ2Wire also has set up a ZAM IRC java applet that you can use.

Game-specific May 11th updates:

EverQuest: Players with an active house will be credited one month of upkeep costs and the inactive period will be extended from 90 to 150 days.

EverQuest II: All houses requiring rent will have one month added free to help offset any costs incurred during this outage.

Free Realms: The Free Realms birthday event and the New Member Bonus Bonanza will be extended to give everyone a chance to participate in them. Don’t worry about your farms; they’ll be taken care of too!

Star Wars Galaxies: All Galactic Civil War point decay has been suspended and inactive citizen removal time temporarily increased by 14 days. Item and vendor expiration timers have also been increased by 14 days.

Vanguard: One day for each day lost will be added to every player's Upkeep Bank to help offset any costs incurred during this outage.

So I went to station and logged in. Then it asks me to reset my password. I try to reset it and it keeps telling me that my username and password don't match. I've tried multiple times. It let me log in, so my Username and password are correct. lol I have no idea...

Some people have gotten e-mail resets of their passwords, check your email and see if that's what is causing it. Then you can use the emailed password to change it to something new.

Everyone should go to https://auth.station.sony.com/login (or your game's respective web sites) and change their password. You *MUST* do this before you will be able to login to your games!

Everything won't be back at once. They said they were "phasing" services back in.

EQplayers.com is back up. I'd say expect game servers to be the last service restored.

Will BEGIN today, dont know how long it will take to get it back up to functional status.

Remember, they have to bring dozens (if not hundreds) of servers back up (and these dont include the individual game servers), and then they are probably going to force us all to change our station passwords (not that I disagree with that at all).

I also noticed as of 10 mins ago, psn is partially running (my ps3 wants to update, and I can log in again)

True. However, the "compensation" for EQ is:

"EverQuest® - Double XP - Double Rare Mob Spawns - Double Faction Gains All players, each character - May 14, 2011 through May 22, 2011 - Just login and play!"

That to me indicates they plan to have it up by the end of today.

The compensation package is of little concern to me, other than crediting the actual lost time (free days of play). With max level toons, max AA, and max guild, what is there for me, other than increased loot (which is mentioned for eq2, which I play)

Understandable. No solution will be perfect :/

In all honesty, I would have been happy with just three things: they work hard and quickly to get the servers back up and running asap; they keep us reasonably informed (unlike what they did); they give us the free month plus extra days worth of gametime.

I play on Fippy Darkpaw and don't want there to be double XP or any other in-game items or content changing compensation.

To be honest, their next update could be at any point. It could be in 10 seconds or in 10 days. Your guess is as good as mine. :)

We're really just taking an educated guess based off of their May 12th post by saying "not this weekend". That's obviously not official as SOE themselves never stated as such verbatim and everyone here hopes we're proven wrong because we all miss our SOE games. Smiley: nod

edit: I'm happy to say now that our weekend guess was wrong! Smiley: grin

You know as much as we know. Trying to interpret SOE's vague clues is pointless, as "few days" could have specific, intended meaning, or could just be more stall tactics foreshadowing more weeks of downtime.

The thing is, SOE doesn't respect it's customer base enough to let them know which.

Its up to you if you let them continue to bill you otherwise there is a working phone number where you can put a stop to that for the time being.

As far as I was able to tell, unless you take action (calling SOE about your acct, it will continue to charge you).

Sadly those that have 3 6 12 24 months you are basically screwed stuck with a non functioning service.

The rest of you folks, if you want to return, SOE appears to say at least by June and not sooner.

And for those that keep quoting the EULA as if it was set in stone written by god, about not owning anything, Im sure the industry that evolves around owning anything virtual (currency items accts services) chuckle and say yea keep believing that, there is nothing to see there......

hint: that stuff that isnt owned by anyone but MMOs is a multi million (billion) yr industry, but hey keep telling yourself what you want.

found this by using google:
Quote:
Also, in the report they say that the secondary market across all games is estimated to be worth $3 billion USD annually

Im sure EQ is but a small drop in that bucket, just as they are now a small and shrinking number in the MMO world, nonetheless its an fyi for those that hold on to EULA as if it was a holy scripture.

Yes, but what the Chicken Littles like you running around screaming "OMG, OMG, SOE taking my money and ******** me, OMG!!" don't/won't/can't realize is that the 1 free day for every day the systems are down means that no one is screwed.

For example, I'm paid up through the second week of September. The free month pushes it to the second week of October. Then the free days are tacked on from there. Or apply the free days and then the free month, it all works out regardless.

So I can cancel my payment cycle the day before I'm due to be billed in September and, if things continue to go like this, I could still be playing in November.

Guess what that translates into? I lost nothing money-wise. What I paid for in May, and was subsequently deprived of at the time, is now being realized in my ability to continue playing after I cancelled my sub. And in reality, I gained a month, simply for being patient.

This "account billing ***** job" that you and so many others refer to is a complete fallacy. True, you get nothing now. But it will be made up to those of us who don't pull a hamstring in a colossal knee-jerk reaction and cancel our subs.

It's all about being calm and patient and waiting things out. If others are unable to do that, and instead, feel the need to rant and rave and then cancel their subs, more power to you. Have a nice day, good luck on finding another game that you enjoy as much. The rest of us will eventually be back in EQ and having a blast like nothing ever happened.

Many others are at a new payment cycle NOW and are already at that crossroads, they can continue to ride it out or call and cancel simple as that.

P.S. if u are a long term renewal, do you really want that choice made for you?

The sky is not falling, I actually keep reading to hear how people like other games and see which one I might try out.

Stay or go your choice, but as a consumer and long standing member of the EQ community, I dont mind expressing my concerns about watching your pennies and not let that choice be made for you

The only way I'd really care is if, suddenly and simultaneously, my house burned down, my cars were stolen and I suddenly lost my job. In other words, money became an issue.

If I were to have been billed for a 2 year subscription on May 10th, I wouldn't have cancelled. Granted I'd be waiting a long time for the compensation to kick in. But I'd eventually receive it and still be out nothing. Just like someone who pays monthly.

I stand by the fact that there is no financial *****-job being perpetrated. Yes, we all lost the opportunity to play. But not one person would lose one cent over this no matter how you spin it.

YES Sony stinks at keeping us updated. They always have...so why does it really bother you when they have always been like this. Don't ever get into a relationship...you will be unhappy. The loss of our info should make people mad but that is being addressed and is a differnt topic.

There is a reason Sony doesn’t do hourly updates or give a status report of their exact progress...
(Other than because your average person is too impatient and too emotional) they can’t give an exact date when the servers will be up...because there never is one. And what are they really going to tell you that you will be able to comprehend? Really.

I would love nothing more than to be able to play my game again.

BUT...

This is not a simple turnkey process with a users manual that starts at step 1 and ends at step 25...and tada, it'a all good.

There are billions of bytes of code and data that have to be gone through not just for repair, but also to see if there are any hidden virus time bomb in all that code. Once they get everything built back up, it has to go through a boatload of testing for stability, Interoperability as well as Security. We are talking about what? TEN MMOG AND the Playstation Network!!!!
IF it fails, the work has to be redone, and that might mean a few tweaks here and there to revamping the entire system (Remember 10 MMOG and PSN).
So if Sony said, “OK everyone we are close and the servers will/should be back online in 10 days.”
What happens come day 8 or 9 and a flaw or weakness is discovered or it just crashed and SOE/PSN has to be kept down another 10 days.
PEOPLE WILL FREAK THE **** OUT. You know the mf’er out there with overwhelming amount of expectations to go with that unhealthy amount of built up anticipation will just lose it and go apeshlt.

Or what happens if they rush to get it back up and everyone rushes to log in and starts playing...2 hours later...it breaks?

What Sony has to go through/is going through is the nightmare scenario. Hardware crash is nothing...you just buy new equipment and rebuild, this is far, far more complex and radical.

I read a while ago they were looking at the end of May. That is what I'm thinking. Any date prior to that will be gravy.

SOE you couldn't run a worse damage repair if you tried. I agree communication is king. Far as I am concerned I am letting the two accounts that I have had for 10 years die out after there subscription runs out. It was obvious even before this happened that you were running things on a shoe string budget and investing as little as possible back into the system for Everquest.Shoot you did better advertising for freerealms than EQ. I have already contacted the attorney's office running the class action lawsuit and will contact the Attorney Generals Office of both my state and yours. Too many corporations are collecting and loosing our personal information with no serious consequence. I write this in hopes that others will take the same action and hit you where it hurts. Heh I wonder how bad this is affecting them. Seriously think about it, you go to Fry's to buy a gaming console (or whatever store you like) and the sales guy see's you looking at the PS3, hes like "No no dont buy that you cant play any games online with that one!" You allmost have to wonder if those sales guys will allways mention that about that console.

Heh I have a PS3 also, so this totally blows!

But ya the communication is so poor as allmost to be dismissive, The fact that they dont like giving updates is allmost like they dont work weekends (sure thats fine normally, but right now?) it doesnt really feel like this company is burning the midnight oil, I think gaming is probably the smallest portion of soe isnt it? I used to think as SOE as being one component but perhaps that gaming dept. just isnt getting the support they need to get this done fast, who knows what kind of internal politics are going on. But the commincation to say the least is typical for soe, very bad.

I think they should replace the throne in the guild lobby with two giant ugly scarecrows, one named "Sony" that is doubly susceptable to beg and one named "Anonymous" that is doubly susceptable to intimidate attacks. When we skill up begging on "Sony" we get free stuff like party cake and rum, temporary bridles, temporary tier 5 mercs, etc. When we skill up intimidate on "anonymous" then the scarecrow runs around screaming like a little cowardly redheaded stepchild afraid for her daily whipping and begging everyone in the room for forgiveness for being bad.

OK, SOE, listen up....

You are pissing your customers off by your self-protective defensive posture. You are *NOT* communicating with us. The only reason is fear of information sharing and/or arrogance.

There is NO danger in sharing info with us.

We had better and regular updates during the damn Persian Gulf war.

We had General Norman Schwartzkopf giving us hourly briefings with videos and maps and diagrams and press briefings and breaking news.

And that was a damn war with serious national security implications.

AND, it was the most supported war effort in American history (percentage of american residents who supported the war effort), followed by the greates enlistment volume in American history.

So, if something as secretive and dangerous as a WAR can share information publicly (with phenomenal results from the information recipients), *WTF!* can't you share information with us about a friggin video game?!?

Stop the arrogance and actually communicate with us. Days and days of no updates. Cut-and-paste "we are working around the clock" bullsh!t doesn't cut it.

I want to see a website just about this. A live webcam where I can look at 3AM and *see* the around the clock scurrying. Text message updates. progress reports: We have 17 or 36 new servers installed.....we have the new firewalls connected today......we reloaded all the security software.....we are testing the login servers...etc.

Your stone-faced arrogant silence is doing more damage to your business and customer base than the down time.

And some BS in-game housing crap doesn't mean squat.

Should I check back here every 2 hours to see if the servers are up?

Should I wait a month?

Or should I just come back here over and over and get increasingly discouraged and frustrated because you don't give a ****?

You may have the best game out there. But your public relations and customer service are the worst. They always have been.

There is a danger in giving a guesstimate. If it's wrong, someone will drive a truck through their front door. They're not in charge of saying when the services come back up. The people who are helping them plug the holes in their security are, enforced by the governments concerned for their peoples' personal info, and other than fixing what they're immediately presented with, they don't know anything of what the next batch of reports will be.

Would it be nice if they'd more directly just say that? Yeah.

But we all knew it will be up when it's up.

People want that sense of anticipation I guess because beyond that you won't get anything out of being told a shaky date. It still may or may not be up on that date, and it certainly won't light a fire under the pony. With how much money they're losing every day over this, you'd better believe they mean it when they say they're working their asses off. :P

We already saw that happen...well not the truck part. But people spazzing the F&)@# out when they thought it was going to be up soon and it wasn't.

Then they screamed for updates.

Then Sony released "it's not going to be up and we are still working on it"

How about a statement every day at 12 Noon PDT on the SOE OFFICAL website? Is that asking too much?

How many people are spamming their launchpads *Just to see*?!!

It's negligent on the part of the Sony Online Entertainment to treat their paying customers in this manner.

SoE, if you are reading these posts, this one is from a customer with three accounts since 1999.

Are these the clients you really want angry, disgruntled, unhappy, discontent, annoyed, disappointed, dissatisfied, displeased over some thing that is so, so easy for you to correct?!

Who gives a shiz what the EULA says? Honestly you apologists are pathetic. You are the type of people who wear NObama shirts to the unemployment office to pick up your checks, and whine to the people in line about how he is stealing all your hard earned money.

The Eula simply protects them from liability lawsuits. It doesnt mean that their actions aren't assanine. It doesn't mean that their handling of this situation is anything less than atrocious. No, I don't believe in being entitled to anything. I do, however, have this funny notion that seems to have died. The notion that when a company that takes my money has to earn it. They aren't entitled to it just because they are big and have more money to lobby congress than I do.

This is probably obvious with the newer details on the attacks and how bad the security mess is, but I would assume that Sony's staff that actually run the computers are given absolutely no resources and adequately-trained people to provide security. Anyone who can read and follow directions can set up a network, but it takes someone with real computer skills and experience to secure that same network.

For instance, my uncle is an accountant, and he knows nothing about computers. He used to think America Online, back when it was huge, was real hacker stuff. SCO actually had a product called UNIXWare that was still used for business at the time, and he wanted me to connect an ultra-cheap, secondhand server with a pirated copy of UNIXWare up to the Internet with no packet filtering (either software or hardware) that he planned to put all his accounting data on.

He is a certified public accountant, and when I tried to explain what a horrible idea that was and the incredible amount of liability he was opening himself up to, he just pitched a temper tantrum. I was afraid he would loose his accounting license for negligence, should anything happen, and he was paying me next to nothing to do the work. So it made it easy for me to walk away from the mess, but I would assume the technical people at Sony have a stronger desire to keep their jobs. And there are sure to be people willing to take their places, even if everyone is willing to walk.

Just to emphasize my point, though, there are a lot of management people who want to do information technology for half of what doing it right takes. And they really do not have the background to understand what a terrible idea it is, the failure to meet industry standards that entails and the amount of liability that is involved. This major cracking of Sony's network should impress upon a lot of managers just how important security is, and it may just do a lot of good for the businesses that provide hired computer services.

SoE has always been the kind of company that has never did anything for the customers unless they were forced to. They probably had the minimum amount of security for their games and only care at times like now where they potentially can lose a significant amount of their customer base.

They typically do nothing until the worst case scenario happens.
