SOE Begins Restoration of Services

UPDATE, May 14, 7:15p.m. EDT: SOE has slowly begun restoration of their services.

SOE - Restoration Announcement
SOE - Welcome Back Program
SOE - Recent Updates

SAN DIEGO, May 14, 2011 - Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE) announced today that restoration of its game services will begin today. The phased restoration will include the return of nearly all of SOE's portfolio of online games, the reinstatement of SOE's game forums and websites, and added functionality to require players to reset their passwords.

For details on the hacker attack that has kept SOE down since May 2 and compromised the personal information of players, check out SOE's brief FAQ and all of our previous coverage. See this article for the May 12th news on the "Make Good" program details.

During the downtime you are welcome to join us in ZAM's IRC chat. Feldon of EQ2Wire also has set up a ZAM IRC java applet that you can use.

Game-specific May 11th updates:

EverQuest: Players with an active house will be credited one month of upkeep costs and the inactive period will be extended from 90 to 150 days.

EverQuest II: All houses requiring rent will have one month added free to help offset any costs incurred during this outage.

Free Realms: The Free Realms birthday event and the New Member Bonus Bonanza will be extended to give everyone a chance to participate in them. Don’t worry about your farms; they’ll be taken care of too!

Star Wars Galaxies: All Galactic Civil War point decay has been suspended and inactive citizen removal time temporarily increased by 14 days. Item and vendor expiration timers have also been increased by 14 days.

Vanguard: One day for each day lost will be added to every player's Upkeep Bank to help offset any costs incurred during this outage.

sony is being awesome with make up days and extras , thank you sony BUT
How about a time frame when games will be back up ?

Sony for Everquest should give out Exp potions rather then Dbl exp weekends.
so people can use the Dbl exp when they can play rather then a set time sony gives.
some People work different times and days, even weekends.

"all impacted players will receive 30 days of game time added to the end of the current billing cycle in addition to one day for each day the system is down."

Credit Cards
# May 13 2011 at 8:44 AM Rating: Decent
I thought I would leave some interesting information for everyone about how credit cards work. Credit card fraud is nearly impossible to get away with on a continuing basis, so people have turned to identity theft. For example, the only time I have run into credit card fraud is when someone used my mother's credit card for some plane tickets. She called the credit card company, reported the theft and tried to get them to send someone to catch the person who showed up at the airport.

We decided that the theft was from inside the credit card company, because the person working there said there was no way in the world to catch the person who committed the fraud and did not even want to try. This was just a guess, though. Either way, they immediately took the charge off the credit card. If anyone would care to look on the back of the cards, credit card companies are required by law to charge a consumer whose account is compromised no more than $50 (That figure is part of US law.). But no credit card company even does this anymore, to my knowledge. Credit card companies write off a certain percentage each year for credit card fraud, and they deal with the matter without bothering the consumer with it.

The card numbers that were compromised are going to be even more heavily scrutinized than normal, so anyone who would try to charge anything fraudulently on those cards is being very foolish. That is why thieves turned to identity theft in the first place, because credit card fraud is nearly impossible to accomplish without getting caught. The great thing about identity fraud in this case is that it takes social security numbers, and to my knowledge, Sony does not have any of our social security numbers. If you have not guessed, the million dollars of protection on each account is a public relations ploy, and it will probably be a very successful one.

There is very little risk to an account holder in some stranger having your credit card number in cyber space, and Sony knows this very well. The reason credit card companies do not advertise that they can only charge people $50 in instances of fraudulent use of a credit card is that they want to sell their credit protection service that costs a fortune and does nothing for the consumer. I actually confronted a woman who called from a credit card company about that once, and she told me that I was completely right that they never charged anyone for fraudulent use of a credit card and admitted the protection is worthless.

Whomever stole the credit card numbers from Sony did it to embarrass the company and as revenge for the persecution of George Hotz, the man who jailbroke the Playstation 3. Sony is after this fellow, because it thinks that it is going to lose a load of money out of the Playstation hack. With the situation what it is, they may very well lose some money. There is no doubt at all the cracking of their network will cost them a fortune. The Sony Corporation is getting hit from all sides, and they really cannot win in any respect to all this.

It is pretty obvious Sony did not handle the jailbreaking of the Playstation 3 very well, and while I do not condone criminal activity, I can understand (in the general sense) why people are attacking Sony. If a security researcher from some university with a PhD had broken the playstation 3, they might have asked him or her to cease and desist, but Sony went after Hotz with a vengeance and wanted to make him pay for his 'transgression.' Computer programming is done with pure logic, so there is no way to make any computer system secure forever.
Sony would have been better off to try and contain the Playstation breach and gone on about its business. Instead they instigated what many saw as an act of war, and someone fired a smart bomb at them.

I like what you bring up about laws regarding credit cards having
a maximum amount the card holder is liable for ($50).

Let me say that there are no such laws covering debit cards.
Any liability for the holder of a debit card is entirely up
to the bank issuing the debit card.

Actually, the main reason Sony was targeted over the George Holz fiasco was that Sony attempted to coerce various sites where his "jailbreak" info was published into supplying the IP addresses and various personal details of any user who had downloaded the "jailbreak" with the express intent by Sony to also bring legal action against anyone who had downloaded the program.

what will be amusing is when the servers do actually come back - all those that have jumped ship and already canceled their account will probably not qualify for any of the reimbursement offers that SOE is making......after all the account is canceled prior to the offer being valid.

As far as credit card - anyone that has not called the CC company / bank for the debit cards and reported the card compromised needs to re-evalulate their priorities, same with not calling or going to the credit reporting sites and requesting a free fraud alert be placed on the master record.

This is a game, that is it, so what if you lose a few weeks of addiction time, worry more about the real life results form what these thieves - who by the way just had their IRC channels hacked - I find that totally amusing and satisfying, but not as much as them getting 10 to 15 years in a maximum security prison, with a cell amte nicknamed bubba

From section 8 of the EULA (A very old EULA, the first one I think)

8. We and our suppliers shall retain all rights, title and interest, including, without limitation, ownership of all intellectual
property rights relating to or residing in the CD-ROM, the Software and the Game, all copies thereof, and all game character
data in connection therewith. You acknowledge and agree that you have not and will not acquire or obtain any intellectual
property or other rights, including any right of exploitation, of any kind in or to the CD-ROM, the Software or the Game,
including, without limitation, in any artwork, music, character(s), item(s), coin(s) or other material or property, and/or any
compilation or copyrightable arrangement of any of the above (collectively, “Rights”), and that all such property, material,

We don't even own the toons we create. They do. Is that even legal? who knows.

As far as toon ownership is concerned, I don't think anyone has challenged SOE in court over it.

As for the rest of it, it is pretty standard fare for a commercial software licence. Games, spreadsheets, operating systems, tax return preparation software, file viewers, whatever. If it is commercial software it will have a license very similar to SOE's license. We essentially are purchasing a non-exclusive, revokable license to use the software, we are not purchasing the software itself.

This type of licensing is also present in other industries. As an example, when you purchase a movie on DVD, you have not bought a movie, you have bought a license to view the movie (not show, VIEW). Pretty much anything that falls under the heading of intellectual property, has similar licensing arrangements where you are purchasing a use permit rather than the property itself.

Several years ago I used to play SWG quite avidly. Then one gloomy day they came out with what would be more accurately called the Combat Downgrade. So unlike all those with empty rants and bluffs, I actually quietly cancelled my SWG accounts and went out and bought World of Warcraft. I was ecstatic with my choice and settled down into several years of WoW enjoyment, never looking back at a game ruined. As I saw it I purchased a certain game for very specific reasons. When a game is for all practical senses completely remade into a new game it is like going out and buying a truck, a few years later you take said truck into a shop for normal maintenance but when the mechanics are finished they return to you a motorcycle. While the bike may be fully functional and in really great shape, it is NOT what you bought. And any sane person would be enraged at such a trade off, even if you really like bikes. Well last year Blizzard pulled the same stunt with the introduction of WoW 2-point-oh-my-gawd(here we go again) coming in the form of Cataclysm. So I thought about it for a bit and figured I really loved the crafting and commerce system in SWG. So I got my 3 SWG accounts back up and running and rolled up 5 Traders and a Jedi (for clearing lairs out to set harvester farms).

Well, it was a fun 6 or so months selling structures for the lowest prices on Starsider. But I recently came able to build a new "super-system" and now am once again moving on...this time to Rift. So far I'm loving it. I urge all of you to come join me in this great new game. However, I HIGHLY recommend being able to set all the graphics setting all the way up...WOW Rift looks AMAZING if you have the computer to handle it. Dells and Macs stay home kiddies, you'll be wanting a power-mutt for this game!

No...don't stay home kiddies. Go download Rift now.

I have a beast pc, and all the settings are maxed. Rift, more or less, does look very good, as a game should look when it is released in 2011. At least for a little while the graphics wow you, but the more I played the game. the more boring it became...to the point it was annoying. Midway into day three I was just clicking buttons while reading or watching tv. I stopped playing Rift 4 days into my free 7 days, and now I will wait until EQ is back online. It had one aspect, (the rift = whole zone must fight part)that was very intriguing. I had hoped EQ would have pulled this back in 2002 when the POK was created…I always imagined how great it would be to have the POK overrun and all the NPCs would don weapons and fight/die with all the players. But after watching Rifts/zone group fighting…I was no longer impressed with the application of this concept.

As some have already said…Rift is WOW with training wheels.
I would say uninspired, vanilla game play, and really nothing to write home about.

You were right to use the word “Kiddies”, but in the wrong way. This game will appeal to the kiddies tired of WoW or who find WoW too difficult.

LOL, I knew someone was going to respond to this...

When I was reading sc03's post, I couldn't help but think of the classic Animal House rant from Bluto.

Bluto: Hey! What's all this laying around stuff? Why are you all still laying around here for?
Stork: What the hell are we supposed to do, ya moron? We're all expelled. There's nothing to fight for anymore.
D-Day: [to Bluto] Let it go. War's over, man. Wormer dropped the big one.
Bluto: What? Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
Otter: [to Boon] Germans?
Boon: Forget it, he's rolling.

Good stuff.

The date given as last date to sign up for ID Theft Protection is 28Jun2011. One must also have changed ones Station Account password PRIOR to 28Jun to be able to sign up for the protection. 28Jun2011 is 6weeks and 5 days from today, 12May.

IF one is unable to log onto ones Station Account how is one supposed to be able to change ones password?

Will SoE be advancing the date to sign up for theft protection for each day one cannot log onto ones Station Account?

I rather doubt that one can call SoE Customer Service to change ones password.

I also notice that the date given to sign up for ID Theft Protection for PSN subscribers was 18Jun2011. That was dated 5May. To date, PSN Network is still non-functional.

People who were not paying for accounts should not get anything free. Why would they? And furthermore, why the hell are you so ready to give your credit card info to a company that was negligent in one of the largest security breaches in history?

Nice try, but go spend your money on a different game.

BTW, Delta Airlines, I was ABOUT to buy four roundtrip first class tickets to Hawaii but then you filed backruptcy and got several billion dollars in bailout money from the government. I should get those tickets free now! >XO

One, I don't use a CC to pay for my sub (or anything from Sony for that matter), I use a time card. Sony doesn't even have my credit info.

Secondly, some of my info (like e-mail address, name and possibly address or even paypal info) was compromised. If Sony is going to make up, they make up to every single person who was effected by this and not just the ones currently subbed to their games.

Third, your anologies don't pertain to the situation because I DID buy stuff from Sony a few days prior to this outage (stuff I cannot even use now). Also there is tons of other people who use time cards to pay for their account AND if you pay with time cards, your account doesn't show as "active". How else are current people going to be credited if they are only going after "active" accounts? By all means, they MUST give EVERYONE free 30 days.

Go play a different game you say? Well, if Sony doesn't get their act together anytime soon, anyone who is left will be playing another game. That includes us who where wronged but not compesated just because we weren't feeding SOE money while they wheren't providing a product.

This. The only right thing to do is to give EVERYONE who has an account, subbed or not, free 30 days. Hey, it could even get some people to stay. And after all this, Sony is gonna need the extra people it can get.

Since it appears that everyone got their personal information sold to the highest bidder(my guess on what happened after they got hacked) everyone should be getting the 30 days+ not just people subscribed when the hacks happened or people who are still subscribed now.

The games are just games but real life stuff can and will be impacted by this. Also a lot of people take time of from playing EQ and it would be extremely insulting to a lot of folks if they choose to cancel accounts for a year if they were in the military or something and came back and their accounts were all messed up to due to hackers and all their money stolen because they never changed their debit card or something.

here let me try to explain this as easily as possible.

Rt = real life time
S = server down time

Rt = S

now, X = exp
K = kill exp

K(X)=Rt

for every day the server is down, you need 2X to make up for the real life time you are missing

to offset the time spent not killing while the servers are down, you have to have higher exp gains.

i was calling for 18-24 X pots, mainly to make up for server down time in the blink of an eye.

now with 2X exp it would need to stay for as many days as the servers are down. im guessing that they will be down for 30 days, at minimum. so double exp would need to be around for 30 days, 4X exp would need to be around for 15 days, 8 times for 7 1/2 days and so on.

the reason i wanted pots was because i can make up for the lost time on my own.

NOW people also say its down for everyone, what are you ******** about.

WELL lets TRY to explain this concept for you.

during the year my dad gets 6 weeks of vacation time, lets say he also played everquest. he took the 6 weeks right before the servers went down and was planning to play it all that vacation (really he watches movies and catches up on tv, but you get my point)

now he cant play the whole time the servers are down

now lets say he goes back to work, and the servers come back up, and they have a make up present of double exp till the made up for lost time. well, my dad works overtime, when ever he can. most days he is only home for 4 hours, (not counting sleeping time) so he could at most only get 4 hours a day, apposed to the vacation time he could have gotten 12-16 hours a day.

now im hoping that you people understand this concept a bit more.

Quite possibly.....no....wait...yes definitely..

the worst attempt at a mathematical logic argument ever actually posted

Improperly structured. Incorrect assumptions, conclusion without premises, incorrect transposition of values. Unassigned values arbitrarily assigned value after an equation is solved.

But, at least there was a healthy dose of condescension as you try to explain it to all of us less-intelligentia

i really don't get what you people don't get.

you are all acting like we had months notice of this down time, like it wasn't taken down because sony leaked all out private information but credit card pins. you are all acting like you shouldn't expect ANYTHING because of the down time.

i personally don't do anything but stay online. i don't do anything in real life, because there is nothing to do in real life that i haven't already done.

you people act like eq will be around forever, i'm personally anticipating eq will be down as long as psn is down too, which is expected to come back may 31st fully.

thats 1 month of time.
i was expecting to get level 90 and enough aa that i'm not useless in that 29 day period of time.

i dont mind ever being proven wrong, but what i do hate, more than anything else, is people blindly saying an idea of mine is stupid, and being insulted for it.

yay, you have other things to do, and you like doing, aside from playing a video game
i do to, how ever, i have to kill time in between them, and an mmo is a great way to kill a 5 hour chunk of time a day.

but just because i don't exclusively play an mmo, doesn't mean that i dont have plans for my character. if this was planned down time, i wouldn't want s*** but this is we lost your information, due to our unpatched and unfirewalled servers (psn was, im assuming the same for soe). i do expect some amount of in game compensation, as i don't care about the free time or any of that crap.

apparently soe is giving us double exp events, and if the event goes on for as long as the servers were down, than they are making up for lost time.

What does that even mean?

Exactly. SOE doesn't have to do anything. Anything they choose to do is to just damage control.

i personally don't do anything but stay online. i don't do anything in real life, because there is nothing to do in real life that i haven't already done.
Thank God! Someone who can finally tell me what it was like to base jump off the Eiffel Tower while bareback on a zebra.

Doesn't matter when it comes back up, the main complaint is the lack of information.

thats 1 month of time.
i was expecting to get level 90 and enough aa that i'm not useless in that 29 day period of time.
Based on your statements here; I fear you will remain useless.

i dont mind ever being proven wrong, but what i do hate, more than anything else, is people blindly saying an idea of mine is stupid, and being insulted for it.
Life Lesson #4: When you do something stupid, say something stupid, or propose ideas that fall into the realm of stupid; you will be mocked. Grow a thicker skin.

yay, you have other things to do, and you like doing, aside from playing a video game

Sigh... But I thought you'd done EVERYTHING.

I think i covered that in my Dear Sony post below.

Here's an idea, maybe dad and you can find something to do in the real world. You know, like read a book, go to a movie, go outside, you know something other than sit in front of a computer for 6 wks? What ever did dear old dad do before there were video games when he had vacation? You do know that there was a time that video games didn't exist, don't you? Maybe dad can search the dark recesses of his brain and try to remember what he did before that time. The fact of the matter is, you are not "losing" any more time not being able to play a video game than you are "losing" time doing anything else or not doing anything else. Now here's hoping you understand the concept more. And if you are unhappy, quit. Problem solved.

Looks like public education strikes again.

1) Rt does not = S because Rt does not = server time when it is up. ie. when you are sleeping, your game is not progressing.
2) Kill Xp and Xp are not similar units as per your post, so your equation ends up looking like pressure x temperature = seconds

What you actually need here is to have parsing data on your general xp/hr. Then you can state that your Xp rate x time lost = xp lost.
You may then apply that xp lost data to Sony and say:

"Dear Sony, I was writing you because you have hurt my feelings and I need virtual compensation to satiate my real life depression because of morbid obesity and the facial scarring from that farm combine accident.
I have discovered through real math that your negligence has impacted my virtual development. Through this math i have calculated that I generally earn 500xp per day. I know thats not a lot, but my insecurity makes me spend 3/4 of my play time linking other people's gear in the newbie channel for self gratification and touching myself when I find a good combo in the character creator. In order for me to remain a loyal subscriber, I am going to need a potion that grants me 500xp instantly for each day i have had to interact with real people. I will also need see through panties for my high elf.'

The Arl of Eamon (or is it Th`Earl) has struck the nail on the head.

Alidan is a meathead of epic proportion. He is actually using Stripper Math: "I make $60 an hour because some fat guy put two $1 bills in my G-string within the last 2 minutes, even tho my bruised and scarred fat azz won't be back on stage 'dancing' for another 45 minutes. So even though I've only made $13 for my entire night's work, there was that one point earlier where I made a dollar a minute, so I make $60 an hour just like my gynocologist, Big Black Bob. Just call me Dr. Candycane."

Alidan... your intellect never ceases to favor my lowest standards!

here let me try to explain this as easily as possible.

the only thing people will be getting is , your are lacking in common sense.

You dont need to "make up" for any lost time... your are not "lacking" in anything. This is not a race where everyone else got ahead of you. There is no time constraint to get to X amount of AA before your toon gets wiped.

As for RL time... what you do or do not do is NOT SOE's business or fault. Whether you take 6 months of vacation to play EQ or not , the service is NOT guaranteed to be up that entire time , nor are you "losing" anything in the deal , since again... its not a race and there is no ticking clock. Its an entertainment service , same as watching HBO.

It makes your post look.... exactly what it is.... greed greed greed.

That is a rather frightening statistic since it is likely that everyone reading these threads since SOE's servers went down have been loosing one half an IQ point per day.

I know that personally, since the servers have gone down, my IQ has dropped into the mid-60s... they've actually come and taken away my Masters Degree from behind my desk here. By next week, drool will have taken over the first floor of my home! By the end of the month, I'll be asking for quad-XPs and applauding American Idol with my feet.

I hope currently un-active accounts are getting free 30 days too.

I was unactive because of money issues for a few months and was about to re-sub. I bought $20 worth of SC a few days before the servers went down (when they had double SC day), and was planning to re-sub within the next few days, then this happens. I am about the buy the DoV exp too because I found it for $20.

So yeah, I hope they give me 30 free days too cause I WAS impacted by this, otherwise I probably won't get the exp and I will prob have to force a refund for my SC.

LOL... yeah, Sony, and I was ABOUT to put $1000 worth of station cash in my account too!

And after all this, Sony is gonna need all the extra people it can get.

the stuff you paid for will still be there , duh

the fact that your account is :" inactive" means , you wouldn't have been playing with the stuff you paid for anyways , so your out nothing.

I was ABOUT to buy lottery tickets , so I deserve a portion of thier winnings too right?
-------------------

If SOE doesnt have your CC information , then the rest is currently available online anyways through various public information access , so again , your out nothing.

Try using one of the person information sites to look yourself up sometime , I am sure yo would be amazed.

I play the progression server Fippy Darkpaw for a reason. I don't want there to be increased XP of any kind to make up for the downtime. The free month plus free days plus free extra identify theft security is enough. I can understand allowing 1 double XP weekend, but no more. No XP potions, no in game items, nothing else.

We play Fippy so we can get away from all that garbage. Please don't have compensation that will go against the nature of the server.
