48 Hours Does Everquest

The CBS newsmagazine "48 Hours Investigates" is broadcasting a story about Everquest. I assume it is the same one that we saw them filming at the Boston Fan Faire. The e-mail I received from CBS stated that the story was going to cover the "controversy over Everquest -- are some people addicted to the game?" The promo for the show on the 48 Hours website states that the name of the show is "Addicted", with the following teaser: "Are a growing number of people addicted - to an online computer game? Plus, meet a man who says he was addicted to sex." It will be interesting to see if it is a fair presentation, or just sensationalist crap. Based upon that promo blurb on their website, I'm banking on the later. Nonetheless, it's worth checking out. The broadcast is on CBS, Friday, October 18th at 8:00 p.m. et/pt.

I've read newspaper artiles about EQ, even heard an NPR piece on it. They are all very similar, talk about the HUGE amount of time the game requires, and dig up some woman who says that EverQuest is destroying her marriage because her husband would rather play EQ that do stuff with HER. I know this sounds very non-PC, but it's been part of every EQ "Expose" I've ever seen.

Of course, the point we have to make to others is that EQ is not destroying anyone's marriage, it is just an except outlet for people who are unhappy. The exact same "shocking revelations" are made about Internet chat all the time. EQ is a MUD, a Multi User Dungeon, and as such is a much more interactive form of online chat, along with a lot of stuff that doesn't require talking to other player characters.

YES, I am addicted, but I set boundaries and don't let it interfere with my work or family. In fact, my daughter lives out of state, and we play EQ together once a week, it's a heck of a lot better than a phone call!

Phone call:

EQ Dad: "Hi, how are you?"
13 year old daughter: "Fine"
EQ Dad: "How's School?"
13 year old daughter: "Fine"

Everquest:

EQ Dad: "Oh, look at the goblin!"
13 year old: "Ok, I'm gonna reverse kite it while you stand by to do a Washobi if I need it!"
EQ Dad: "What's a Washobi?"
13 year old: "Oh DAD....don't you read the boards?"

Surprisingly interactive. And teaches typing. Smiley: grin

Great points Dargadin.

I started playing with some friends who were both local and long distance, and now I play mostly with my 'real life' brother. We hang out a lot in person and have lots of hobbies, EQ is just one of them. I must say... I am really glad I did not discover this game when I was 15 though... sheeeesh, might not have ever snapped me out of it, then again, I doubt I would have had the patience to really stay focused and level, and as it is now... I can afford maybe 20 hours a week for EQ, and I have learbned a lot. It is really amazing the level of detail in the game.

I really see all kinds in game... some people who 'vibe' like total addicted losers, and other people who are just young and probably powergamers, good for them. I sometimes wish I had the time!! lol But alas, I have a GF, other hobbies and actually like to be outside, walkin hiking and go skating with my friends etc... so..../shrug My real life makes a bit of time for EQ, not the other way around.

Peace.

[PS - 28 years old IRL... and Brother is 31... just FYI. I think a lot of EQ players are 18 yrs or older, and it is used often as a break from the stresses of living on earth. Everyone I know that plays EQ is 25 and older except one friends little bro... who is 12]
