The Hole is also known as Old Paineel, the first stronghold of the Heretics, and has long been taken over Elementals and their ilk.

For the longest time, the Hole was rumored to house the entrance to the Underfoot... This is, of course, no longer a rumor.

A merchant that sells the Hole Key is Rallia Hapera in "Superior Supplies", location +940,+760. Needed amiable Heretic faction to get into Paineel and purchase the key.

RE: key to inner city?
# Aug 23 2005 at 11:58 PM Rating: Decent
to get the key you need to talk to one of the skeleton guards by saying "i need key." if you have good faction with Heretics they'll give you the key. if not then the easiest way to raise faction is to kill kobolds in Warrens. it took me about 1 hour to raise faction from KOS to dubious. after reaching dubious i just used a erudite illusion (i was a human) and went from dubious to amiable.

Would a barbarian warrior with a dark elf/troll/ogre potion be able to purchase the key in Paineel? Has anyone tried illusion potions? Also, can somebody give us a /loc on the merchant who sells the Hole key?
RE: hole key

The key is purchased in Paineel, I believe. However, if you know where to click on the entrance (it helps to be a small class, too, although my Half Elf was able to do it) you can enter through it without the key. Not hard once someone shows you.

You can get in by having a chanter make you a gnome as well, and on the way back.. Of course you need to turn into a gnome, or shrink after you zone.. again. You can cast underwater.

I know this is probably goint to start a big ruckus but this is my plan as a 56 Ranger to get into the Hole. I have a shiny brass idol and some gate potions so I know I can get in with the idol and get out with the potions. My question to the masses that have been there before me is can I solo the drop zone at my level? I mean with a 25% bonus on exp, plus going through the "Hell" levels makes a lone Ranger do dumb things. Is it worth it or is it a nother Ranger gate back to pok trip for me if I try?

I know its been a while since this person posted, but I thought I would add a reply anyways.. If you did drop into the hole at that level you would most likely not be able to solo down there, the mobs hit for close to 200 and alot of them summon and are extremely magic resistant.. if you were a healer class you might be able to keep up but rangers take the hits too hard even with good gear, no way a 56 could solo at the bottom as a ranger (top part yes)

You should be able to solo the In zone mobs easily enough. Be careful of adds, and try to just get one at a time. At least till you get comfortable. You might find that you can get in a bit further than you think. If you take the left ridge, instead of going straight through the buildings, you will find a nice little camp spot with easy to pull single's, as long as you can gate out, you should be fine. The reason I say gate out, is after you find yourself where I am talking about, going back that way is not gonna happen. You have to go up the building a few levels to get back to where you started. THere are alot of mobs inside the building, and you not getting adds inside will probably not happen.

My enchanter can get there solo and charm kill him.
I learned this when I had to do my epic and couldnt get any help. I just illusion earth elemental and alliance the mobs so they dont attack me. Then run to the mob and find a suitable mob to mezz/tash/charm then buff. when the mezz wears off you have a good pet ready to kill.

Getup your AE stuns memmed and send in the pet and then follow that up with tash and slow on the target epic mob and then chain ae stun him to save your pet some life. And the additional bonus of stunning is that if your pet breaks charm he gets stunned then you just mezz both mobs and recharm your pet. I say remezz first because charm is a long cast spell and your stun will wear off and you will get interupted by 2 pissed mobs. And normally by the time charm wears of the mob is dead so you should be ok, Most mobs in the zone if hasted and buffed have enough hit points to chew through the epic mobs in this zone fairly well.

I have also helped other people kill their epic mobs in this zone using this method. just make sure you wait a few minutes to find and kill any roamers near where you are fighting because AE stuns can pull the strangest trains sometimes.

# Jun 04 2005 at 10:40 PM Rating: Decent
You could do it, but it will be by the skin of your teeth. Your better off having some CC (Crowd Control) class, or some more tanks or mellee's to Tank mezz adds. You will get adds, where your going. I know it's possible not to, but very unlikely.

No...you absolutely CANNOT levitate down.

Even with the spell on, you'll end up dead at the bottom of the pit with the only way back through the kindly devices of your friendly, neighborhood necro and a 175pp jade inlaid coffin.

Actually, a cleric can survive the fall if they cast devine arbitration before jumping. The cleric then rezzes the unfortunate street pizza.
Faction
# Apr 04 2004 at 5:43 PM Rating: Decent
I really wanted to get into the hole so I did some research to raise my faction in Paineel. First I killed about 400 Kobolds in the Warrens (including names) and then I told the skeletal guard in Paineel that I had lost my key and he gave me another one to get into the inner city of Paineel. Then I walked to the key vendor and bought the key named "Hole Key". It cost me 102p. You must raise your faction to indif or you do not stand a chance.

The Hole
# Dec 20 2003 at 5:53 PM Rating: Good
My husband and I have been camping the Hole for about 3 weeks off and on. We are after the Naturalist's arms but here is some info we have found out. Thaeorin is a 63 Paladin and I am a 59 Druid.... we box either a 53 Warrior or Cleric.

The named (Ancient Gargoyle/Construct and an Old Gargoyle/Construct) can have random pop spots and can appear anywhere in the dungeon. We have killed all of them in different locations every time we killed them. The NO DROP item that they drop is their rare item whereas the droppable one is their common.

Thaeorin pointed out that only the spirits and ratmen need be snared. The constructs and gargoyles do not run. All of the named and Gargoyles we have encountered do summon and are slowable. The Constructs do not appear to be mezzable. We had a 65 Enchantress we helped get out once and she could not mezz any of the constructs... even after tash and other debuffs.

Deep in there were still some dark blue cons to Thae. There is a nice xp bonus here also

Well, it appears that you can not buy the key anymore in Paineel. I was just in the vendor which Allakhzam says sells the key and its not there. Can anyone else confirm this?

I just bought one a week or so ago... From the general supplies merchant between the bank and the bar, building with the herb merchant on top floor. The merchant I got it from was the one to left as you enter. Cost was about 128pp. It's possible it's an item that she can run out of, until her inventory is refreshed.... perhaps checking after a server reset would help, or maybe even try killing her to see if when she respawns, she has fresh inventory... /shrug

Hole Changes
# Sep 19 2003 at 10:35 AM Rating: Decent
Tried going down to Jaeil with cleric and 65 chanter and it went really bad. Cleric follows Brell so plan was to drag down to Jaeil but the ratmen made that a bit more difficult than planned. Finally get down to Jaeil and low and behold there are 2 Constructs that wander that whole area making it near impossible to take Jaeil alone. The best part is that the Enchanter said that the constructs were completely magic resistant. Even though he was tashing nothing would land. He said the constructs use to be charmable but they must have changed it. Also the ratmen and constructs hit for high 100's making short order of Enchanter and Ranger. Well needless to say it looks like corpse summoning is in order.

Be forwarned: Looks like it is back to a raid needed to get swiftwind.

Try shaman
# Nov 27 2003 at 10:24 PM Rating: Decent
Try taking a shaman with you next time. The constructs are slowable with the disease line slow spells. The slows are mitigated, though, so it wont help all too much. Disease and cold spells were the only weaknesses I found.

The mobs at the bottom of the hole have been replaced completely. In Yael's spot is a red-to-60 Guardian of the Seal. He has two gargoyle bodyguards called An Animated Construct, white and yellow-con to 60. Nortlav the Scalekeep is dead, but his ghost hangs around near the pool and he's now named Echo of Nortlav. There were also a handful of bodies on the ground labelled "a fallen adventurer" but untargettable.

One interesting thing was that all of these mobs are indifferent to my 60 Wood Elf Bard, and to an evil Erudite Cleric mule. I created that mule and bought him a DA spell. He cast it, jumped into the Hole from Paineel, and landed safely at the bottom. None of the mobs cared about him being there. He hailed Echo of Nortlav and got this response:
Quote:
Echo of Nortlav looks at ClericMule01 with spectral eyes. An aura of mystery surrounds the figure as if hiding secrets of a bloody past.

He also hailed the guardian who did not respond. On the other hand, he tries the door to see if it was still locked. It was, and the Guardian reacted to the attempt:
Quote:
Guardian of the Seal shouts 'Those who tamper with the seal shall suffer the same fate as that fool Yael!'

And then he proceeded to hit my little mule for 950 points in one shot, which cut short his little trip. :)

I've posted pictures from this little expedition on the Tragic Heroes guild gallery
Lost Ruins of Paineel
# Aug 26 2003 at 5:56 PM Rating: Decent
When you zone in, it now says "entering lost ruins of Paineel". As someone has already posted the horseshoe area is now full of very large golems called "Massive Constructs". Be very careful when trying to solo these, they are highly resistant to slow. My 53 shaman had slow bounce even after landing malo. And if you do land slow you get a message that goes something like "your spell was partially successful" meaning they are not fully slowed. They don't hit particularly hard (about like an elemental) but being only partially slowed they don't make for good soloing. I killed 4 or 5 of them and got nothing but a few gold to a few plat each. Another change is there is an extra mob in the entrance. He wanders a bit around the area of the last 2 spawn before the stairs. He didn't aggro when I pulled the static spawns and should add some more XP to someone doing that camp. Thats all I've seen so far, I had to gate out when I got a construct add. Look forward to seeing some more of the new content, this is one of my favorite zones.
Edit
Actually its Ruins of Old Paineel.

On August 26 the hole has been redone, there are new mobs, and new quests. The rats are gone and replaced by golems, and the golems near half pipe are huge now.

Also I found a new mob, he is near the second pool in, he is a gnome... here is the text when I hailed.
You say, 'Hail Pellillo Cogswin"
Pellillo Cogswin says 'What how did you see me? Never mind I guess it doesn't matter at this point. Our [goal] has become unattainable.'
You say, 'what goal?'
Pellillo Cogswin says 'When my younger brother heard that something had happened here in these ruins he went looking for fortune and glory with a [party] made up of old friends.'
You say, 'what party?'
Pellillo Cogswin says 'As far as I know they are all treasure seekers and explorers like him, but his fate has become less of a priority to me as my attentoin has been placed on my [brothers] that accompanied me here.'
You say, 'what brothers?;
Pellillo Cogswin says 'Well to make a long story short my other brothers and I tracked the party here, but when we found that disenchanted earth elemntal we all stopped to investigate. What we found was quite extraordinary. A peice of [paper] that looked like it had been ripped from a joirnal was clenched in the hand of this elemntal.'
You say, 'what paper?'
Pellillo Cogswin says 'The paper detailed an ancient magic spell that we believe is responsibel for the constructs that recently inhabited these ruins. Now gnomes being gnomes we all begin to wonder if we could decipher the ancient text the spell was written in and use the spell for the greater good of our kind. But then I begin to have a [doubt].'
You say, 'what doubt?'
Pellillo Cogswin says 'Well after thinking about it a little I realized that there must be a reason why this magic had not been found. Many have passed through these ruins and this had never been discovered by anyone. It must have been hidden for a reason and such I told my brothers that we should leave it here as it could bring more bad then good. Thats when something [happened] I was not prepared for.'
You say 'what happened?'
Pelllillo Cogswin says 'One of them, Stiggles, turned to me and told me to shut my trap. The other, Tani turned to him and demanded that he give him the paper. They begin to argue back and forth and then a small scuffle broke out betweeen the two. I tried to break it up, but before I could I heard the paper rip in two. Standing across from each other with a torn piece of paper in their hands they looked at me and gated home leaving me here in danger and very [worried].'
You say 'worried?'
Pellillo Cogswin Says 'this power cannot be given to my kin. It is dangerous and I must figure out how to get those pieces back. . . Hey you seem pretty interested in this to have listened so long. You think you could do me a [favor]?
You say , 'what favor?'
Pellillo Cogswin says 'Find my brothers and when you do give them each a not I have written for them. HOpefully it will help them understand why the information contained on the peice of paper must be kept here. they should give you the pieve they have and then I will need you to bring them back here to me so I can fix this mess.'

After that he gives you 2 notes but he disapears. I will post more info on the re-done hole soon. =)
