The Hole is also known as Old Paineel, the first stronghold of the Heretics, and has long been taken over Elementals and their ilk.

For the longest time, the Hole was rumored to house the entrance to the Underfoot... This is, of course, no longer a rumor.

In the merchant building in front of the bank in Paineel. The key looks like a bag, so use the ALT key to see what everything is. Only 1 of the 2 merchents sell it.

FYI, the key is sold in Paineel at/near vendor #10 on the EQAtlas map:

http://www.eqatlas.com/paineelinmap.html

The key looks like a bag, named "Hole Key" and sold to our necro for 135pp.

I think Verant should seriously consider making this dungeon drop some better items... Its not as difficult as ToV or VP ect ect... However this zone is a big time pain... Much more difficult than dungeons like KC and Velks... and its just not worth the pain in the butt to go way over to Odus to get good exp with only a few Ok drops.. From my experience, people would prefer to fight in a zone with Ok exp. and a chance at a good drop than a zone with awesome exp. and pretty sorry drops for the lvl of the mobs... The only reason people ever go to this zone is if they're doing Epic pieces...

I am an Erudite Cleric who does not travel much. I was hesitant even to go into the warrens at first (I was killed on my first try). Can I hunt in The Hole or are there guards there? If so, are they undead or what? Also, do I need to travel through Paineel to get there? And are there things that will kill me there as well?
Thank you

Get out. See the world. Have fun :)

type / all CLERIC (your level) and find out what other clerics your level are up to. I don't know what level you are but it sounds as if you are probably too low for the hole.

You should not be KoS in a lot of places Qeynos, Freeport, Shadowhaven, a whole lotta cool cities.

Good luck. Have fun. Leave Odus, there's not a ton of stuff to do there.

I did it got my corpse thanks to posters, but some things werent clear so i am going to list how to do it step by step.
1)create halfling rogue of brell
2)get his butt to paineel
3)bind him as close as possible in paineel
4)enter through crack, its in the room with large pond inside the area that leads to the warrens, instead of going left to warrens, go strait you will find steps that lead down to large pond.
5)go into the water, you will see a crack just below water level use duck (d) right and left will lead down to underwater entrance to hole zone
6) swim to shore in hole zone then hide/sneek
7)successful if say you hidden from view/stalking like cat.
8) use eqatlas map to get to docks, swim to waterfall, keep in water and follow it (underwater) till you fall into large pond at bottom.
9) consent and start dragging corpse through tunnle to the left till you get back to the ledge you first dropped down in large cave. get corpse close as possible to the ledge.
10) let you thief die (attack anything )
11) go back into the hole to the top of ledge and pull corpse all the way to the water you entered zone at.
12) take character is really cring and go through crack (is large enough to even fit barbarian) and loot corpse and leave the same way you came in.

i hope this helps all who fall in, believe me i know how much it bites )
Difficulty of MOBs
# Oct 10 2001 at 8:39 AM Rating: Good
I have a 45 cleric who´s really, really tired of DL. I´m thinking of bringing him here, but I have a question.

Since this is a new zone, do the mobs act like Velious or Kunark mobs (HP and damage wise) or are they, since the zone is located in the Old World, like other mobs on Antonica, Odus and Faydwer?
RE: Difficulty of MOBs
# Feb 11 2002 at 11:43 AM Rating: Decent
Comparing Hole mobs to other mobs:

1) Elementals = standard stuff at that level (normal HP and AC for 45+ mob)
2) Flighty Fiends = standard mob of that level
3) Ratmen warriors = tough little bastards, hit hard, high AC
4) Undead = real tough
5) Rock Golems = 3x HP of any mob in zone, very, very hard to mezz, hit like trucks
6) Ratmen Guards = Buckle your chin-strap...

At least 30% of front third mobs will summon and ver 60% of back two thirds of zone will summon.

You must bring a porter or CoH mage to get back out if you go past front drop ledge. You can be less than 50, but I wouldn't recommend anyone else being below 50 and you should have 49 rezz. There is a reason the Hole has a great exp bonus. You have to earn your paycheck in this zone. Here was my last group: 54 WAR, 54 PAL, 52 SK, 51 ENC (me), 54 CLR, 50 DRU, and in the front third (entrance to city courtyard), we lasted through two spawn cycles before two golems and a ratman warrior add forced an evac.

Funnest zone in game for me, though.

had a 30 pally fall in the hole lol. thanks for the rouge trick ). but there is a twist i fell in during pk battle on sullen zek. from what i understand in order to make the trick work you need to be bound to paineel. only a higher level nuet can do this on this server (and dont think they would be interested in helping me recover a goodie) is there another way to get corpse out once you got the rogue in to nab it??
A few tips

Exp hunting: Some people have had success soloing here at the zone. I think the trick would be being able to handle more than one at a time since they're pretty close together. I've never tried it, but there is a VERY substantial exp bonus in here, so even a single group hanging out at the zone will get fantastic exp and a chance at some nice items. All in relative safety since the zone is very close to the first mobs.

Epic Drops: A hint for those in guilds that need a lot of epic drops. My alliance got four Kirns (for shamans), six Kindles (for chanters), one Keeper (for pallies) and three Jaeils (for rangers) in four days of raids. We did this by making one big raid that took us all the way in on the first day. Then, we had a mage with CoH and a druid bind and camp at the safe spot to the right of Kirn's tower (as you face it) that overlooks the waterfall. Everyone else gated or ported out. The next evening everyone regathered and the druid grouped with the mage and ported out and grouped people to be CoHed in. We managed to fit about 30 people on the safe ledge without agroing anything, plenty for a successful raid here. This way you can get as many epic fights as you need without having to go through the long fight to this point more than once.

Kirn's Tower: The tower where Kirn and Kindle are found has only a very few mobs that aren't ghosts, and those few are quest mobs that are non-kos. We used invis to undead self and group spells and potions to get the entire raid up to Kindle's room without fighting a single ghost. Then because two in that room are quest mobs, only one other agroed when invis to undead dropped.

Maps: There are *fantastic* maps available at http://www.bol.ucla.edu/~berjd/hole/ which have all of the mobs and their paths indicated, as well as what type they are. I (a shaman) guided a ranger/sk pulling team who had never seen the zone before on what to pull to get us all the way through the zone, based entirely on exploring the zone myself and using the maps during the fight. These maps are amazing!

Ohhh Ohhh question.
I was in the hole by Master Yael exploring and found fusible earthen Ore Any idea what it is for? It is also a light source.

Fusible Earthen Ore is part of a high lvl quest. I don't remember everything needed. It had to do with Al'Kabor's portal experiments. One of the other pieces you needed was coral from Phinney in Kedge Keep. There were 4 things I believe. After you get these items you turn them into an NPC in Warslik's Woods for a GREAT item. I just wish I could remember what it was.

GOT MY CORPSE BACK
# Aug 12 2001 at 3:18 AM Rating: Default
I did it! It truly can be done! I started a halfling Rogue on my roommates computer, gave consent to drag corpse, and headed in to the Hole. Kept Sneak & Hide on the whole time (otherwise the Rats will get you) and followed my trusty EQatlas.com map. Didn't have to pay a necro 200pp or anything! I ended up following the other poster's advice on getting to the waterfall and jumping down (very exciting). You have to swim across a pool to get to the top edge before jumping. But then I was able to see a tunnel and hike my way back out, rather than the whole get yourself killed and summon the body from the top, which I couldnt figure out. Good Luck to everyone who tries it! And thanks so much to everyone who posted advice and encouragement!

The hole is a very safe place as far as body recovery. Create a Lil Fuzzy footed rogue who is a brell worshiper and he can cruse the hole
non-kos. Except revenants and rats WILL kill you.
Just hide and sneak and you are ok. Just FYI.

Dismiss Summoned
# Jul 26 2001 at 1:30 PM Rating: Default
Just a quick question, if a lot of the mobs in this zone are summoned creatures, how would a warrior duel wielding Gold Plated Kashintanas dropped from Naggy fair here? The GPK's proc Dismiss Summoned, I'm not sure how this spell works but would it be safe to assume that these weapons would make quick work of the elementals? Probably not but the theory sounds interesting. If it does, well my 2 GPK's just tripled in price!

Food for thought

I don't know the stats on the GPK, but Dismiss Summoned is a really nice spell for a weapon proc (maybe not as your primary level, but definitely for this zone).

The PC version of this spell does 92 + 2*level damage, capping at 162. It is a direct damage spell, focusing on one target (in case you're one of those who bought a Skyfire sword and then immediately tried to sell it when you found out it not only breaks mez but it can also harm you along with the mob -- you don't have to worry about that with GPK).

I don't know if that would affect the price of your swords though. I love the Hole, but it's really about the only place for the 50+ crowd where the GPK proc would be very useful. Maybe if they add a Plane of Underfoot with more elemental type mobs, and planar quality items and quests, then your swords would be considerably more valuable.

Question as a Brell worshippers
# Jun 28 2001 at 6:45 PM Rating: Decent
Hi all,

As a Brell-worshipping dwarven paladin, I am concerned about messing up my faction with oh, just about anyone who worships Brell, including my own people in Kaladim.

So, does anyone know if hunting here is like a Tunare follower hunting in Plane of Growth, or is it not quite that bad?

I'd appreciate any insight here, thanks!

Faction for mobs in the Hole (at least the elemental ones; I'm not sure if the undead Erudites give this faction or not; the ratmen don't) is "Minions of Underfoot." You will steadily lose faction with this group as you spend time in the Hole.

Your starting MoU faction is determined by how much Brell likes you. But when you leave the Hole, no one really cares so much how many of those elementals you killed.

In other words, it's like a lot of old world dungeons, where the negative faction hit is particular to that dungeon only. You won't become KOS in Kaladim just because you slaughtered a few of Brell's little footsoldiers.
